Portland has struggled on the road (14-15) |
| Game #1: | Jermaine Dye gives Castle Rock the early 3-1 lead in the 3rd, with a 2-run homer. That is how the game would end up, as neither team can score in the final six innings. Portland threatens in the top of the 9th, but Benitez shuts down the rally. Pettitte goes 8.1, giving up just one earned run in the victory. Not a typical victory for Castle Rock, as we’re used to scoring a ton of runs, but we’ll take it.

| Game #2: | The Gambler Kenny Rogers (7) takes on Sirotka (12) in Game 2. Pitching advantage to Portland in this one. Portland gets back-to-back RBI with two outs from Bell and Clark to take a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Owens delivers another clutch hit in the top of the 7th, with a 2-out RBI single, giving Portland a 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, Mike Sirotka is cruising until the 7th, when Luis Gonzalez leads off with a HR to make it 3-1. Portland extends their lead to 5-1 in the top of the 8th.
Castle Rock loads the bases for Luis Gonzalez in the bottom of the 8th, but can’t manage to get a run across, as he grounds out to second to end the inning. Portland tags on four more off of DeJean in the 9th, and the final is 9-1, Portland. White gets the rare save in an 8-run game, but it was 3-1 when he came on. WP: Sirotka (5-2) |
| Game #3: | Doug Davis vs. Robert Person in a game that again favors Portland on the mound (5 vs. 13). But, grades don’t matter to Mike Sweeney, as he kicks off the Castle Rock scoring with a grand slam in the bottom of the 1st. But, Portland will not be deterred, cutting it to 4-3. But, Bonds knocks a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 2nd to extend it to 6-3, and dropping Person down to an 8.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Person is removed after giving up a single to Clayton. Whiteside proceeds to come in, hit Tatis with a pitch and get tossed. Unfortunately, Tatis is lost for 11 games, which is tough with Easley already out for the Hounds. A few runs are exchanged after that, and Castle Rock takes the game, 8-4. WP: Davis (3-2) |
| Game #4: | Another pitching advantage for Portland (sensing a theme), as Sparks (10) takes on Carpenter (3).
It is 1-1 as we head into the bottom of the 4th. Castle Rock loads the bases and Luis Gonzalez delivers a grand slam to make it 5-1. But, Portland comes right back and gets five runs in the top of the 5th and takes a 6-5 lead. It is still 6-5 in the bottom of the 8th, when Bonds comes up with two outs and the bases loaded. But, White gets him to ground out to end the rally. White finishes things off in the 9th, and it is a 6-5 final, Portland wins to even the series. WP: Brock (2-1) |
| Game #5: | We’ve got a doubleheader on the docket today, as Dreifort (10) faces Lopez (9) in Game 1. A marginal pitching advantage for Castle Rock in this one, for the first time in the series.
It is a back-and-forth affair again. It is 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th, when Whiteside comes in. Just like his last game, he hits the first batter (Sweeney this time), but he is not tossed this time around. Dye gets some retribution, as he takes him deep to give the Hounds a 6-3 lead. Benitez comes on to collect the save for the Hounds, as the final is 6-3. WP: Dreifort (8-3) |
| Game #6: | Pettitte (10) vs. Castillo (15) in the final game of the series and the back end of the doubleheader. Pettitte pitches another gem for Castle Rock, and Whiteside hits his third and fourth batter of the series (Sweeney again and Diaz) in his third appearance. Royce Clayton makes him pay this time, hitting the third grand slam of the series for Castle Rock, giving them a 10-1 lead in the bottom of the 7th, capping off a 10-run inning!
Rey Ordonez comes on to pitch in the blowout, and hits Barrett right off the bat. He gets tossed, and Barrett is lost for 16 games! Knoblauch comes on in relief now, as Portland has given up. In the bottom of the 8th, Knoblauch hits Einar Diaz and he is lost for 11 games. Castle Rock is not happy with the beanings, as we have now lost three players to 10+ games due to HBP’s in this series. Luis Gonzalez delivers a 2-run HR to make it 15-1. Will Clark delivers a grand slam in the top of the 9th, to make it 15-5. And, that is the final. WP: Pettitte (8-2) |

| Game #1: | Gas reliever Mike Williams loads the bases with one out in the bottom of the 9th and the score tied and then Donnie Wall comes in and issues a walk to end the game with a literal walkoff 4-3 for Hampton. Derek Jeter had two hits including the Hornets’ only extrabase hit of the game – a double – and he drove in a run and stole one of the team’s four bases on the day. Matt Stairs scored once and drove in his 44th run of the year with his lone hit on the day. He also stole a base. Jeromy Burnitz (14) homered off Jesus Sanchez – a solo shot in the 4th – while Derrek Lee and his two singles drove in a run as well. |
| Game #2: | The Hornets stormed back from a 6-2 deficit with four runs in the 7th inning off the Huskies’ cruddy bullpen and then went on to add three more runs over the final two innings as they came away with a 9-7 win over Hampton. Luis Alicea did the big damage for Manhattan Gas with a bases clearing triple in their 7th inning. It was one of three hits on the day for him – the other two were singles. Garret Anderson also had three hits for the winners, scored three times and drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the 8th. Derek Jeter had two hits, two walks and two steals but didn’t factor into any scoring. The Huskies fell victim to not getting enough people on base as they had no shortage of power in the game with six homers off the Hornets including five off starter Rob Bell. Derrek Lee (12) and Henry Rodriguez (4) each homered twice with solo shots added by Scott hatteberg (7) and Brian Daubach (7). |
| Game #3: | A super-close game was decided in super boring fashion with Ray Durham grounding out in the top of the 10th inning to score Dave Martinez in a 5-4 win for Manhattan Gas. Another homerless game for the visiting team but they continued to prove that it didn’t matter and once again victimized the colossally garbage-dump quality Hampton bullpen. Dave Martinez and Derek Jeter (of course) each had three hits for the Hornets with Martinez getting a double and Jeter a triple. Tino Martinez had two hits including a double and drove in two runs. Todd Hundley (8) clubbed a three-run homer off starting pitcher Tim Wakefield in the opening frame and then the team basically went to sleep on offense after that save for Robert Fick who had three hits and scored in the 2nd inning in a rare start. Donnie Wall improved to 4-2 with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Gas. |
| Game #4: | The Hornets destroyed Hampton starter Pat Mahomes with six runs in the 4th inning as they went on to win easily 9-4. Manhattan hitters did a good job of being selective at the plate fanning just twice while walking nine times in the contest so didn’t care much that the Huskies out-hit them 9-8. The Hornets made their hits count with Derek Jeter continuing to terrorize Hampton pitching with his 7th homer of the season – a two-run fly ball that would not die in the 4th – as well as a Garret Anderson two-run shot in the same inning. Former Husky Wil Cordero had two hits including a double and drove in three while Adrian Brown didn’t get a hit but scored twice on three walks and stole a base each time he got on. Jeromy Burnitz provided the only excitement for Hampton with his 15th dinger and an RBI double. |
| Game #5: | Adam Eaton had the first good start of anyone in the series and allowed just a single earned run as the Huskies won 4-2 in the opener of a double-header against Manhattan. Eaton (5-5) was removed from the game with two out and two on in the 9th and was replace by Josias Manzanillo who got Derek Jeter to pop out to end the game and earned his 2nd save. John Halama (3-5) took the complete game loss for Manhattan despite allowing just five hits. Derrek Lee (13) homered off Halama as Hampton’s only extrabase hit. |
| Game #6: | The Hampton Huskies piled up seven runs in the first four innings and then hung on to complete the sweep of a double-header against Manhattan with a 7-6 win. Jeromy Burnitz (16) homered for the third time in the series and drove in three runs while Ron Coomer singled and doubled twice while scoring one run and driving in another. Chris Stynes and Jerry Hairston Jr. each had two hits as well. Lots of hits once again for Manhattan (11) but no home runs. Dave Martinez had three of the Hornets’ hits. Luis Alicea was injured in a collision with Stynes at 2nd base and was knocked out for five days. |
