Baltimore Blue Crabs @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: The Huskies hope to avoid a bad case of the Crabs as they host Baltimore for a five-game set.
Game #1: In what would be a precedent-setting game for the series, some f-ugly performances on the mound for both team resulted in no lead being safe.
The Crabs drew first blood when Tony Armas Jr. got into trouble with a leadoff walk to Mark McLemore and then gave up an infield single to Michael Tucker. Chipper Jones came in then and registered his 1,000,000th RBI of his career with a single that plated speedy McLemore.
All was good for Baltimore starter Jeff Suppan until the 3rd inning when he gave up five hits including three doubles and also walked a couple of batters. At the current rate of exchange that = 5 runs, thank you. That made it 5-1.
Armas was not pitching too badly but got into some trouble with baserunners in the 5th and then with two out and two on Jorge Posada (8) blasted one to make it 5-4.
A Jeromy Burnitz (17) homer made it 7-4 to give Hampton some breathing room, but the Crabs promptly crushed their windpipes with four runs in the 7th and another 4 in the 8th off the abysmal Hampton bullpen led in this game by Guillermo Mota who gave up five runs (three earned) in 1.2 innings.
Hampton scored three times in the bottom of the 9th to make it close but it was not to be as they fell to Baltimore 12-10.
Everyone who picked up a bat for Baltimore got a hit in the game (17 in total) with Posada leading the way with three hits. Preston Wilson (14) and Tony (the Slug) Batista (17) went deep off the batting-practice tossing Hampton pen.
Bill Spiers had three hits for Hampton.
Game #2: F-ugly pitching in Game 1 took a back seat to f-ugly fielding in Game 2 as the Crabs committed three errors that led to two unearned runs in a series-tying 5-4 Hampton win.
Jeromy Burnitz (18) homered again for Hampton off reliever Ramsay in the bottom of the 7th which put Hampton up 4-2.
The Crabs tied it up in the 8th with two runs on a Sean Casey homer and a Dmitri Young double which sent the game into extra innings where Ricky Gutierrez put the game to rest when he ripped a two-out single through the infield that scored Scott Hatteberg to win it.
Young had three hits for Baltimore.
Game #3: Tim Hudson was pretty much trash in his start for Baltimore as he gave up homers to Chris Stynes (6) and Henry Rodriguez (5) in an 8-3 Hampton win.
Jorge Posada had another good game with two hits, a run scored and one driven in.
Stynes and Rodriguez each had three hits and drove in three runs for the Huskies who saw their bullpen not actually melt down in Chernobyl-style fashion for one of the first times in weeks.
Game #4: The Crabs’ bet that they could beat the Huskies with one hand tied behind their backs turned out to be not quite true as they fumbled their way to allowing seven unearned runs in a 12-6 win for Hampton.
Greg Vaughn homered and drove in four runs after replacing Jeromy Burnitz in the first inning after the latter was beaned by a Kevin Appier pitch.
Appier pitched very poorly (2 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 1 ER, 3 BB) but got no help from the defence which helped contribute to six unearned runs on him. Preston Wilson (15) and Brian Hunter (5) homered for the Crabs.
Barry Zito improved to 2-1 with a 1.23 ERA with six innings of one-run ball.
Game #5: Brian Daubach got hurt, Marc Valdes was ejected in the Jorge Posada Show.
Posada had four hits including a double and two home runs and alone beat the Huskies in what wound up being a 9-2 laugher. Tony Bautista (18) and Alex Cora (4) also homered for Baltimore.
Ryan Dempster (6-3) was solid for seven innings allowing just the two runs on four hits while striking out 8 and walking just two.
Ron Coomer hit his 2nd homer of the year for Hampton … hurrah.
Series Summary: Hampton gets a rare series win and it came against a superior team so good for us I guess as they downed the Crabs 3-2.

Southlake Scorpions @ Monroeville Maulers

Series Preview: The MAULERS 39-31, vs division rival Southlake Scorpions 25-45. MVM returning to the comforts of home hoping to rebound after enduring a disappointing road series last week, on a 4-game losing streak.
Game #1: SCO 7-10-1 / MVM 11-12-0
L-P. SHUEY 0-2, vs W- Turk Wendell 3-1It’s 5-5 after 2, then 7-7 after 5. The Maulers bull pen squelches the early SCO offensive onslaught giving the MVM offense time to plate 4 in the 7th finally sending P. ASTACIO to the showers. Jose Acevedo is on for the 9th with a comfortable 4-run lead and he gets the job done by handing the victory to Turk Wendell who went 5.1IP in relief of Scott Schoenweis with another disastrous start after his 8-1 start. 2 through 5 hitters for the Maulers had a multi-hit game providing the bulk of the offensive fireworks. 2-HRs by Vladimir Guerrero 30/31 extending his league lead over Barry Bonds. BICHETTE, DAVIS & YOUNG have a multi-hit game for SCO. MVM 11-7
Game #2: SCO 2-6-2 / MVM 7-11-1
L-A. REYNOSO 4-10 vs W- Jon Leiber 9-53-2 Maulers after 4, then MVM plates 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th providing plenty of insurance for Jon Leiber as he cruises for a CG victory scattering 6 hits and only 1 BB. Ramon Martinez (HR), Todd Hollandsworth (HR), Ron Mateo, and Rey Sanchez with a multi-hit game. MVM 7-2
Game #3: SCO 6-12-1 / MVM 2-5-0
W- J. PARQUE 5-5 vs L- B.J. Ryan 1-21-0 SCO after 4, the Scorpions finally get to B.J. Ryan in the 5th plating 3 runs and then add 2 more chasing Jose Acevedo in relief. PARQUE & VAN POPPEL combined with a 5-hit gem for the victory. AMARAL, BAGWELL, BICHETTE (HR) with a multi-hit game for the Scorpions. SCO 6-2.
Game #4: SCO 0-2-0 / MVM 5-7-0
L-G. STEPHENSON 6-5 vs W- Andy Ashby 6-7Andy Ashby hurls a complete game 2-hit shutout with only 1-BB. He seems to have picked up the last couple of starts where Scott Schoenweis left off. A multi-hit game by Pokey Reese and Troy Glaus (HR), provides the punch as the Maulers plate 5 in support of Andy Ashby performance. MVM 5-0.
Game #5: SCO 3-6-0 / MVM 14-16-0
L-P. ASTACIO 3-6, vs W- Brian Tollberg 6-3It’s HAMMERING TIME as the Maulers pound out 16 hits and 14 runs for efficient use of the lumber and make a statement to end the series that they won’t go away quietly after last week’s 1-4 performance. 6-Mauler sluggers with a multi-hit game as Troy Glaus goes 4-5 with 1-2B and 2-HR (21) 3-RBI, Vladimir Guerrero (.361) 2-4 2-HR adding to his league-leading HR total, now at 33, and 3-RBI (83) monster #’s approaching halfway through the season. Brian Tollberg hurls an efficient 7IP scattering 5 hits while the Mauler bullpen follows suit. MVM 14-3.
Series Summary: SCO 18/36/5 – MVM 39/51/1

The MAULERS take the series 4-1 a much-needed rebound after last week’s disappointing 1-4 series loss. Although the DEMOLITION enjoys a 5 game lead in the division, they can still see the Maulers in their rearview mirror “jockeying” for position as HWE helped a little taking 2 games in their series with CHI. The Maulers shorten the gap by 1 game.
