Harper Woods Expos @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Harper Woods (22-35) visits Castle Rock (33-25). Castle Rock has been outrageously good at home, with a 20-4 record. But, I have to think that luck is going to run out at some point. |
| Game #1: | The teams exchange runs in the 2nd inning, and Dreifort and Stein are both pitching well as the starters. Castle Rock loads the bases in the bottom of the 4th with one out, but Polanco grounds into a DP to end the rally. It is still 1-1 going into the 7th. In the bottom of the 7th, Michael Barrett delivers an RBI single to score Tatis Sr., and it is 2-1, Castle Rock. But, Harper Woods comes back with a run in the bottom of the 8th, and it is 2-2.
Castle Rock loads the bases in the bottom of the 8th, but Jim Mecir gets Tatis to ground out to end the rally. Harper Woods plates one in the top of the 9th on a Johnson groundout and take the 3-2 lead and Mecir closes it out for the Expos, who take the series opener. Dreifort struck out 11 in the losing cause for the Hounds. WP: Mecir (4-2) |
| Game #2: | Kerry Wood vs. Andy Pettitte in a matchup of two B starters. Castle Rock loads the bases in the bottom of the 1st with nobody out, but can’t get anything done. They load them AGAIN in the bottom of the 2nd, and JT Snow grounds into a double play, but at least gets one run across.
Wood has walked seven batters through four innings, and Bonds finally makes him pay, smacking a 3-run shot after two two-out walks in the 4th, which gives Castle Rock the 4-0 lead. That’s how it would end up, as Andy Pettitte pitches a complete game gem, allowing just two walks and three hits (all singles). WP: Pettitte (6-2) |
| Game #3: | Luis Gonzalez leads off the scoring with a homer off of Jared Washburn in the bottom of the 1st. Easley follows that up with a solo shot of his own in the bottom of the 4th to double the lead to 2-0. Castle Rock adds two more in the inning and takes a 4-0 lead.
Things are going smoothly until Elarton is pulled off the mound with an injury (14 days on the DL) with two outs in the 5th. But, Quantrill and DeJean combine to keep the Expos off the board, and the Hounds pick up their second straight 4-0 shutout. WP: Quantrill (3-2) |
| Game #4: | Harper Woods ends its scoreless streak in the first inning, as Doug Davis walks three guys before recording an out. He walks a fourth, and gives up a second run, before he gets Mueller to GIDP and end the bleeding. Expos add another in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Hounds strikes back in the bottom of the 4th, however. They score 5 runs and chase Eldred from the game. When Castle Rock bats get hot, they are a really tough team. Heredia comes in to relieve Eldred, and is greeted by a 2-run HR from JT Snow to extend the lead to 7-3. Benitez comes in for the top of the 9th for Castle Rock and proceeds to walk the bases loaded and walk in a run. But, Harper Woods can’t get the clutch hit to tie it up, and Castle Rock takes the game, 7-5. WP: Davis (2-2) |
| Game #5: | Big pitching advantage to Harper Woods, as they send out Mussina (11) to face Carpenter (3). But, the long ball is Castle Rock’s friend, as Dye gets them on the board first with a solo HR in the bottom of the 2nd. Easley adds a 2-run shot in the same inning, as the Hounds take an early 3-0 lead.
Lewis gets one back with a solo shot of his own in the 3rd, and Larkin adds another to make it 4-2 in the 6th. Expos add another in the 7th to make it 4-3, but Wetteland gets Bautista to ground out with the based loaded to end the danger. Einar Diaz delivers an RBI double out of the 9 spot in the order to give Castle Rock a 5-3 lead. After intentionally walking Bonds with first base open, Luis Gonzalez takes it personally and delivers an RBI double to make it 6-3. Dye follows that up with an RBI single, making it 7-3. The teams exchange runs in the 8th, and the final is 8-4, as Castle Rock wins its fourth in a row. WP: Carpenter (3-1) |
| Game #6: | Expos jump all over Darren Dreifort in the first, with a 3-run HR from Helto and five runs total. THey add two more in the 2nd to make it 7-0. To add injury to insult, Castle Rock loses Easley for five days after colliding with Dye (just injured the rest of the day).
The Expos bats are on fire, as they continue to pound Castle Rock’s pitching, with 19 hits on the day. It’s a laugher in the finale, as Harper Woods takes it 14-2. WP: Stein (2-7) |
| Series Summary: | Harper Woods wins both games started by Blake Stein, but that’s all they can muster, as Castle Rock takes the middle four, and wins the series 4-2. |
Chicago Demolition @ Corktown Bootleggers |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | A couple 1st place teams face off in Corktown. |
| Game #1: | Kevin Millwood with the W for Chicago. Chicago 4-3 |
| Game #2: | The Demolition come from behind down 7-2 to tie things at 7 in the 8th. But, Scott Rolan walks it off in the 9th with a solo blast. Corktown 8-7 |
| Game #3: | Chicago gets it back with a 7-2 victory. |
| Game #4: | The pendulum swings back to the Bootleggers in 10 innings. Corktown 5-4 (10) |
| Game #5: | Chicago continues to score. Chicago 8-5 |
| Game #6: | The Bootleggers keep the tennis match going by throwing up an 18 spot on the Demolition Corktown 18-6 |
| Series Summary: | The teams exchanged blows each game and ended up a 3-3 draw. Chicago looks really solid in the Central, while it’s a close battle for Corktown in the East. |
Southlake Scorpions @ DeWitt Tigers |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Dewitt welcomes the Scorpions to town. |
| Game #1: | Scorpions blow out DeWitt 9-1 in the first game. The big blow was a grand slam by Kevin Young. |
| Game #2: | DeWitt evens up the series with a 4-3. DeWitt gets the game winner in the 7th. |
| Game #3: | Southlake wins 6-2. A 4 run 6th was the difference. |
| Game #4: | Dewitt evens up the series with a 3-1 win. Winning runs game in the 6th. |
| Game #5: | Southlake shuts out DeWitt 4-0. |
| Game #6: | Southlake wins the finale 4-2. Difference making runs came in the 6th |
| Series Summary: | Southlake wins the series 4-2. |
Michigan Mauraders @ Hampton Huskies |
|
|---|---|
| Series Summary: | Michigan took 4 of 6 in what was actually a pretty close and decent series except for Game 3 where the Marauders won 14-0. The first inning of game 2 was the highlight of the series as Tony Armas Jr. pitched a very un-Cy Young-like 1/3 of an inning walked five, hit a batter and allowed one hit as Michigan scored five. |
Fort Worth Panthers @ Montreal Canadiens |
|
|---|---|
| Series Summary: | All aspect of the game come together as the Canadians sweep the Panthers. |
Portland Mavericks @ Monroeville Maulers |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The MAULERS vs a comparable opponent the Portland Mavericks (where’s Luka?, lol) Anyway, MVM facing a challenging task trying to keep pace with CHI. |
| Game #1: | POR 9-16-0 / MVM 4-5-1 W-D. KILE 5-3, vs L- Andy Ashby 5-6All MAVS from start to finish battering Andy Ashby sending him to the showers after 3 while pounding out 16 hits overall (4-EBH) 8 hits in the first 3 innings and 5 runs. The MAULER bullpen wasn’t much help although a gutsy 1.2IP hitless effort with 3BBs by Turk Wendell who got tossed by the HP Ump, arguing what he believed to be a very tight strike zone. An excellent 5 hit performance by D. KILE, but somehow the Maulers plate 4 runs on 5 hits, the long ball of course, this time it’s the David McCarty show (2-4, HR-2, RBI-3). The Mavericks gallop into HAMMER town with an attitude and it pays off. POR 9-4.W. CLARK / J. VALENTIN 3-5, E. OWENS 2-5, S. ALOMAR JR. 3-4, G. BLUM 2-3 2B: W. CLARK 2(25), T. ZEILE (14) HR: W. | Game #2: | POR 7-14-0 / MVM 3-8-1 W-M. SIROTKA 4-2 vs L- Jason Schmidt 1-1M. SIROTKA leads the way scattering 8 hits on 3 runs while the Maverick stampede continues its onslaught with 14 hits and 6-2Bs off of a shell-shocked Jason Schmidt. The Maulers were never in this one not even close although the MVM defense turned 3-DPs providing one ray of light and helping to keep this one from getting way out of hand and POR once again LOB in double digits. The other Mauler highlight was Rod Barajas homer’s in his season debut. POR 7-3.J. CONINE 3-6, E. OWENS / T. ZEILE / S. ALOMAR JR. 2-4, D. BUFORD 2-5 2B: E. OWENS (7), D. BELL (12), T. ZEILE (15), J. | Game #3: | POR 7-13-0 / MVM 6-14-0 W-PERSON 4-1, vs L- Scott Schoeneweis 8-3The Maulers lumber finally makes some noise with 13 hits and plating 6 runs while hoping the Scott Schoeneweis magic show will continue but to no avail The Mavs are 1 better where it counts in runs, and Scott Schoeneweis loses his second game in a row after an 8-1 start. W. CLARK continues to provide the offensive spark for POR. MVM almost comes from behind in the bottom of the 9th plating 2 but falling short by 1. POR 7-6.W. CLARK 4-4, J CONINE / A. | Game #4: | POR 2-5-1 / MVM 3-6-1 L-S. SPARKS 3-5 vs W- Jon Lieber 8-4The Maulers take advantage of sloppy fielding by the Mavericks who allow 2 unearned runs and finally, their bats calm down as Jon Lieber hurls 6IP scattering 3 hits and the Mauler bull pen stifles the remaining 3IP. Offensively for MVM, it’s the Pokey Reese show (see below). S. SPARKS goes the distance for POR scattering 6 hits while allowing only 1 earned run in a costly loss for the Mavs. MVM 3-2.RBI: J. VALENTIN (46), LOB: 6Pokey Reese 3-4 2B: David McCarty (4) HR: Pokey Reese (7) RBI: Pokey Reese (17), Jason Varitek (20) LOB: 4 SB: Pokey Reese 2(19) |

Ryan makes a fine starting debut going 7.1 and scattering 5 hits, as once again the Mauler bullpen comes on strong and secures victory as the Maulers score 6 runs on 7 hits a very efficient use of the lumber. MVM 6-3HR: J CONINE (1) RBI: T. ZEILE (36), J CONINE 2(15) LOB: 8 SB: J. VALENTIN (9), A. | Game #6: | POR 6-12-1 / MVM 7-12-1 L-G. WHITE 2-5 vs W- Ray King 2-1Both starters struggle and it’s 6-3 POR after 6 as MVM left too many runners on base early. However, the Maulers pull up their bootstraps and scrap out the 4 unanswered runs needed in the 7,8,9th innings to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as they take advantage of another POR fielding miscue this time in the 9th after 2 outs and complete a walk-off come from behind victory as David McCarty gets the GWH on a 2B that scored 2-runs. That’s 3 in a row for the Maulers as they HAMMER out the early kinks to match the Mavericks’ 3 in a row to start the series ending up a series tie 3-3. The Maulers salvage some kind of hope for keeping pressure on Chicago. MVM 7-6.E. OWENS / W. CLARK 2-5 2B: J. VALENTIN (12) HR: G. BLUM (1) RBI: E. OWENS (22), W. CLARK 2(31), G. However, cracks are showing in the Mauler hammer handle as the joy ride may be slowly coming to an end. The lack of bench and pitching depth is starting to take its toll. It’ll be a challenging task at best to try and keep pace with division-leading Chicago. But it’s never say die in the Mauler’s camp we shall see! |

Danbury Mad Hatters @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Some seriously offensive minded teams squaring off in the Big Apple – Danbury seems a bit fatigued, might be shuffling their players a bit. Can either staff stop the other team? |
| Game #1: | Features 34 hits, 6 lead changes, extra innings 4 homers and 23 runs! That’s a close game. 3-2 Danbury after one on a Jim Thome 3 run homer (14) in top half. Chris Truby grounds into a bases loaded DP in 3rd to run it to 4-2, Gas Hornets tie with rbi double from Ray Durham and a Tino Martinez SF. Matt Stairs homers (12) in 4th for the 5-4 Manhattan lead. 3 run 7th makes it 8-4 but then the Mad Hatters come back with 2 in the 8th on Thome’s 2nd homer (15) of the game. Then they score 4 in the 9th to grab a 10-8 lead! Matt Mantei comes in with 2 on, no outs and save on the line. Mike Mordecai greets him with a 3 run bomb – his FIRST of the year and the Mad Hatters lead 9-8. It got worse, a couple of walks and Truby rbi single and it’s 10-8. Finally they get the 3rd out and Derek Lowe comes in for his chance at a save. Garrett Anderson leads off and fights off a pitch for a single to right. Wil Cordero follows (former #1 pick for Manhattan years ago) with an rbi triple cutting the score to 10-9. Tino Martinez then singles tying the game and giving Lowe a blown save! Tough 9th for relievers. Then he gets 3 so it’s on to the 10th.Raul Casanova starts it with a single. Bruce Aven in to PR. Wild pitch! Moise Alou up, Aven on 2nd, 2 down now and he singles to LF to score Aven and an 11-10 Danbury lead! Bottom half, Dave Martinez leads off – single! Damian Jackson in to PR. He steals 2nd. That’s it for Lowe and Tom Martin comes in to face his old team. With 1 out and Derek Jeter now up, Jackson heads for 3rd and is safe! Infield in and Jeter lofts one down the RF line, foul, Griffey races over, near the stands, catches it, Jackson tags (on no) the throws – he’s…………safe, just in under the tag, SF and game tied and Martin earns a BS! On to the 11th Donne Wall in for Manhattan and both teams goes scoreless. Next threat comes in the bottom of the 12th. Martin still pitching Luis Alicea leads off with a TRIPLE! Stairs up – the whiff, big time pitch by Martin. Jackson up, he flies it to Marvin Benard in LF, Benard was in just the right spot, Alicea tags, the throw, it’s going to be close, throws is THERE – but he slides around the tag, SAFE, game over. 4th SF for Manhattan in the game! DMH 11-17-0 LP Martin (1-1) BS (1), BS Lowe (3) 12 innings MGH 12-17-1 WP Wall (3-2) BS Mantei (1) |
| Game #2: | Game starts quickly when Ken Griffey, Jr. singles in 1 in the first and then Brooks Fordyce, with 2 outs, reaches on throwing error by Gas Hornets starter Jesus Sanchez. 2-0 Danbury after 1. Gas Hornets tie it up in the 3rd on an rbi single from Ray Durham and FC by Jason Kendall. After 3 innings of zeroes, both teams score 1 in the 7th. Jim Thome with 1 out rbi single for Danbury and a Dave Martinez rbi double for the Gas Hornets.
Still 3-3 going in to the 9th when Griffey reaches on a Tony Graffanino error (in after Derek Jeter got ejected!). Griffey takes off and Jim Thome chops at it and gets it out of the infield moving Griffey to 3rd. Then with runners on the corners and Brooks Fordyce up – Scrap Iron Jones call for the squeeze – and it works, 4-3 Mad Hatters. So in comes Derek Lowe again to redeem himself. AND HE DOES (he does walk 1, but that’s it). |
| Game #3: | This game was exciting – if you were Rob Bell‘s mother! Rob Bell pitches one of his best games ever. A 1 hit CG shutout (although he did give up SEVEN WALKS). But his counterpart, Brett Tomko was almost as effective. He was shutting out the Gas Hornets going into the 7th when John Wehner reached on an error when Brooks Fordyce drops a pop fly. Then Matt Stairs homers (13) for 2 runs. In the 8th, Tomko comes out then walks off – he’ll miss at least 11 days! Scott Sullivan comes in and Jason Kendall greets him with a solo homer (7) and it’s 3-0 and that’s the final. DMH 0-1-2 LP Tomko (0-4) MGH 3-6-0 WP Bell (5-1) |
| Game #4: | By the top of the 3rd, this game was over, or was it? Danbury plates 5 in the 1st starting with Marvin Benard and his lead off homer (7), he’ll triple later. Then Tim Wakefield walks the next 3 hitters! Chris Truby gets a 1 out SF, 2-0. But then Jolbert Cabrera deposits one (2) in the CF seats for 3 runs. Jay Bell blasts one (8) against his original team in the 2nd. Tino Martinez makes it 6-2 in the bottom half with a 2 run blast (5) but a 3 run 3rd makes it 8-2 Mad Hatters. Raul Casanova hits a 2 run based loaded single for the big blast of that inning. Wakefield is gone and crowd getting quiet when Garrett Anderson hits a 2 run double in the bottom half – WAKE UP. Then Wil Cordero doubles him home and now it’s 8-5 after 3. We have a ball game again. 8-6 after 5 when Manhattan plates 1 in the 5th on a Scott Sullivan WP.
But this is an offensive game – after Scott Etherton gives up a bloop single to Casanova to start the inning, Mike Williams is called on to keep it close, he is Manhattan’s top reliever!! He only starts by giving up a rbi triple to Marvin Benard, walk to Bell, SF to Moises Alou and 2 run homer to Ken Griffey Jr. (9) and once again the Mad Hatters have a big lead, 12-6! Guess what – after the 8th the score has dwindled to 13-11. Bottom of the 7th, Gas Hornets begin to rest the starters and well, they come through. And then Garrett Anderson drives in 1 with a SF and Chad Curtis gets a 2 out rbi single. Top of the 8th a Thome rbi double gives Danbury some insurance and when Anderson hits a 2 out 3 run homer (14) that insurance looked pretty good. And in fact it was as Derek Lowe comes on to get the last out in the 8th and 3 more in the 9th to preserve the 13-11 win. |
| Game #5: | Do we need anymore drama – sure! Well in the 2nd Mike Mordecai singles off Rick Reed driving in the games 1st run as Danbury takes the early lead, 1-0. But a Tino Martinez 2 run double highlights a 3 run 2nd for Manhattan and it’s 3-1 after 2 favor of the Gas Hornets. (THE DRAMA IS STILL TO COME!!)
Manhattan adds single runs in the 3rd and 4th for a nice 5-1 lead with Reed pitching well. Maybe I typed that too soon. Down 5-1 in the top of the 5th Moises Alou comes to the plate with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd. He singles, a run scores, and with a play at 3rd, Alou follows to 2nd. Everyone is safe! Then Ken Griffey Jr. hits one down the RF line that looks big, but it stays in the park, but it turns into a SF and it’s now 5-3 Manhattan. On to the 7th, Reed still looking good but then Greg Norton leads off and grounds to Reed, he knocks it down, finds it, throws it away and Norton is on 1st on the E1! Craig Biggio then singles, Norton to 2nd. Donne Wall into pitch. He gets Moises Alou to ground out, runners to 2nd and 3rd. Griffey up, it’s a 2 run dying quail and the game is tied 5-5. Ah another blown save! Gas Hornets go out quietly in their half of the 7th and the Mad Hatters do the same in the 8th. Mike Remlinger on the mound in the 8th and well, maybe it’s de ja vu all over again in reverse. Wil Cordero pops out to Norton, but he drops it!! Damian Jackson into run for Cordero. Oh yes, he will test Brooks Fordyce and his chicken arm. He steals 2nd. And 3rd. Adrian Brown then hits a fly to Benard in LF and Jackson tags and scores and Manhattan is back on top 6-5 after 8. Matt Mantei into save the day!! No problem. Benard the whiff, 1 down. Alou – grounds out to Durham at 2nd. Griffey, swings – BLAST TO RIGHT FIELD – No Doubt where that ball is going, way over the fence and Griffey even circles the bases a bit slower than normal as his 10th of the season with 2 down in the 9th ties it up. DRAMA!! Jim Thome then reaches on an E5 throwing error but Fordyce grounds into the FC to end the top half. Scrap Iron Jones continues to go with Remlinger and Matt Stairs is first up – crowd down after the Griffey homer and Matt lifts them right out of their seats with a monster blast to DEAD CENTER FIELD for the walk-off homer (14) – OK, now we have DRAMA!! |
| Game #6: | One more game to go….. And this one is actually over by the time the 3rd inning starts. Gas Hornets jump all over starter Mac Suzuki in the 1st. Scrap Iron didn’t even waste much time, 5 batters! He gives up a walk, one reaches on error and 3 of them get hits. Garrett Anderson reaches on a Jim Thome error (with the bases loaded) and 2 runs score. Then Adrian Brown singles making it 3-0 and that’s when Suzuki is pulled. Didn’t make much difference as Gas Hornets end up with 5 in the 1st and 2 more in the 2nd. They get 3 more along the way including a Matt Stairs homer (15). Craig Biggio and Jay Bell each get 2 hits in the game and drive in single runs but when the dust was settled and the grounds crew ready to clean up, it was 10-2 favor of the good guys. DMH 2- 7-3 LP Suzuki (2-8) MGH 10-16-0 WP John Halama (3-4) |
| Series Summary: | Turns into a 4-2 series win, but even in the big wins, it NEVER felt any lead was safe. |

| Series Preview: | Jays v Bandits for 6. |
| Game #1: | Finley was hit early and exits after just 3.2 innings. Klesko with a big 2-4 2 HR day helped send him to the showers early. Berg 3-4. Wells went 7 full allowing just 2 runs.

CJ 6 BDB 16 W: Tam (4-2) |
