Connecticut Jays @ Santa Rosa Beach Bums

Series Preview: The Bums welcome the Jays to the friendly confines on the Emerald coast. Should be an interesting series as the Jays own a quality pitching staff that the Bums hope to counter with their powerful offense.
Game #1: The Jays call on Benson (3-2, 2.90) to face Bums O. Fernandez (4-0, 2.36). Jays start fast as Bell and Piazza stroke back-to-back doubles in the 1st. Bums Alomar countered in the bottom half with a leadoff solo shot. Jays leadoff the 3rd with a Grieve walk, Bell single and a couple batters later Vaughn home run, 4-1. Jays fill the bases on walks in the 6th and a Grieve double brings in two more.
Connecticut 8 8 0 WP: Benson 2b: Grieve, Bell, Piazza, Vaughn; HR: Vaughn; IBB: Gonzalez.
Santa Rosa Beach 1 7 0 LP: O Fernandez HR: Alomar.
Game #2: Jays send Finley (2-5, 4.41) to the mound and the Bums want to rebound with Bohanon (0-6, 8.01). With 2-out in the 2nd the Jays place two via walks and Stocker banged an RBI single. In the bottom half Hidalgo was beamed to leadoff the inning and Berkman retaliated by going yard. In the 3rd with 2-out and Jays Piazza on second, Canseco dropped one into right field and Hidalgo guuned Piazza down at the plate. Also in the 3rd Bums Alomar doubled and was brought home by a Caminiti single, Bums 3-1. In the 5th Febles tripled with 1-out and Grieve floated one into right field. Hidalgo failed to repeat on the speedy Febles. Bums Alomar singled and Caminiti went yard to leadoff the 7th. Followed by a Thomas walk, stolen base!, advance and a grounder and Encarnacion single, followed by a Loretta two run double, 8-2.
Connecticut 2 7 1 LP: Finley 2b: Piazza; 3b: Feebles; SF: Grieve.
Santa Rosa Beach 9 15 1 WP: Bohanon 2b: Alomar, Caminiti, Berkman, Loretta; HR: Caminiti, Berkman; IBB: Alcantara; HBP: Hidalgo; Sb: Alomar, Thomas.
Game #3: Now the Jays look to rebound with Park (2-4, 4.96) and the Bums go with Blair (3-0, 5.56). With 2-out in the 1st, Thomas drew a walk and Hidalgo tripled him home. Jay Grieve tied it up with a solo shot in the 3rd. Also in the 3rd Bums Almoar drew a walk and stole opening up first for Thomas’ walk. Hidalgo followed with a single scoring Alomar on a errant Canseco throw. After Rios filled the bases with a walk, Perez cleared the bases with a double. Bums 5-1 on one earned run. Park is removed after giving up six walks in 3 innings. Darr drew that sixth walk and he scored immediately on an Alomar triple. At this point things fell apart for the Jays.
Connecticut 1 7 1 LP: Park HR: Grieve.
Santa Rosa Beach 14 13 0 WP: Blair 2b: Alomar 2, Koskie, Alcantara, Perez; 3b: Alomar, Hidalgo; Sb: Alomar.
Game #4: Leiter (4-8, 6.19) started for the Jays and Vazquez ((3-2, 6.27) for the Bums. Bums Alomar and Thomas singled and Hidalgo ripped a double for one in the 1st. In the 3rd Jays Gonzalez reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced on a Vaughn single and scored on a Grieve 2-out single. Tie game. Not for long as Canseco drew a walk to fill the bases and Bell singled for two more. That lead didn’t last long as Caminiti drew a walk to leadoff the bottom half and Thomas followed by going yard. Tie game. But in the next at bat with 2-out Ledee singled and Gonzalez went yard. Jays 5-3. In the next inning Jays Bell and Febles doubled for another. In the bottom half with 2-0ut Hidalgo singled and Berkman banged an RBI double. Jays 6-4. In the 7th the Jays load the bases with 1-out, Ledee lifted to right. Prince was sent home and gunned down by Hidalgo. In the 7th Caminiti drew a walk, Hidalgo doubled and pinch hitter Rios went yard to give the Bums a 7-6 lead. Followed by an Encarnacion single, stolen base and Molina Rbi single for an insurance run. One thing the fans of the Bums have learned this year, insurance runs are meaningless. In the 9th Jays Canseco leadoff with a walk and with 2-out Stocker doubled to send the winning run, Febles, to the plate. He is pulled for pinch hitter Merloni. And Sasaki held the line.
Connecticut 6 14 0 LP: Wells 2b: Febles, Vaughn, Bell, Stocker; HR: Gonzalez; HBP: Febles; H: Wohlers.
Santa Rosa Beach 8 12 1 WP: Karsay 2b: Hidalgo 2, Berkman, Encarnacion; HR: Thomas, Rios; Sb: Encarnacion 2; H: Rodriguez; S: Sasaki.
Game #5: With none of the rotation ready the Jays go to Del Toro (0-0, 15.00) and the Bums O Fernandez (4-1, 3.03). In the 2nd Hidalgo doubled, Vanderwal rolled an infield single, Perez walked to fill the bases and Santiago went yard. In the 3rd Koskie singled and Thomas put one out, 6-0. Followed by a Hidalgo dinger. Followed by a Vanderwal blast. Back-to-back-to-back. To up it in the 4th Alomar, Koskie, Thomas, and Hidalgo go back-to-back-to-back-to-back.
Connecticut 0 4 0 LP: Del Toro.
Santa Rosa Beach 16 18 0 WP: O Fernandez 2b: Hidalgo; HR: Koskie 2, Thomas 2; Hidalgo 2; Alomar, Vanderwal, Santiago; SF: Alomar. S: Rigdon.
Game #6: The Jays can go back to the opening day winning pitcher, Benson (4-2, 2.69) for the book ends. The Bums in their own rotation conundrum are forced to go to Ortiz (1-1, 7.20). In the bottom of the 2nd with 2-out Berman went yard. In the 4th Berkman, Encarnacion and Santiago singled to fill the bases and Darr singled for two more. In the 5th Jays Canseco, Febles and Stocker singled to fill the bases with 1-out. Reliever Karsay then walked Grieve for one. Bell then singled in another. Bases still full and Piaza came to the plate. Piaza lifted one to left and Stocker scored on the sacrifice. Tie game. Game reset. In the bottom half Berkman gave the Bums the lead again with a 2-out solo shot. Followed by an Encarnacion double and a Perez slow roller up the middle for a second run. For an odd reason Jays pull Benson with only 26 of his 35 MRRs used and put in Powell? Darr and Koskie singled and Thomas walked to fill the bases, then Powell is pulled and Painter is brought in a leftie to face Hidalgo a righty? Well it worked. No runs. In the 8th Jays Piaza walked and Gonzalez went yard to tie the game. Game reset. Now the Jays pull Painter and bring in starter Park. Miller has not used Grade 24 Nen in this whole series. In the With 2-out Koskie singled and Thomas launched a double down the left field line. Bums thirdbase coach tested Canseco’s chicken wing as Koskie plodded around the bases and lost. Still tie game. Bottom of the 9th Hidalgo leadoff with a walk and stole. Jays intentially walk Berkman. Encarnacion singled into left filling the bases. Vanderwal pinched hit for Perez. Infield in. Struck him out. Caminiti pinched hit for Santiago. Caminiti tomahawks one into the gap. ‘It’s all over’.
Connecticut 5 7 1 LP: Park HR: Gonzalez. SH: Stocker; SF: Piazza.
Santa Rosa Beach 6 14 0 WP: Rodriguez 2b: Thomas, Encarnacion; HR: Berkman: IBB: Berkman; Sb: Alomar, Hidalgo.
Series Summary: Didn’t see this series panning out that way. Santa Rosa Beach took 5 of 6 from Connecticut.

Harper Woods Expos @ Montreal Canadiens

Series Summary: Harper Woods and Montreal split the series.

Blarney Drive Bandits @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Gas Hornets facing stiff competition and really good pitching, can their offense match up? Game 4 is a dousy!
Game #1: Two big offenses held to 6 hits each, 5 total runs with Mike Hampton suffering a tough 9th inning giving up a walk, SB, and walk-off single by Tino Martinez.
BDB 2-6-0 LP Hampton (4-4)
MGH 3-6-0 WP Matt Mantei (4-0)
Game #2: Bandits use power by Brian Giles (homer #15) and Magglio Ordonez (homer #16) to blast their way to a big win. Giles racks up 3 rbis and David Wells moves to 8-1 on the year as he has only 1 bad inning that included a 3 run Luis Alicea homer (4). At the time that made it 5-4 Blarney Drive, but then poof – they added 3 runs down the stretch to take it going away.
BDB 8-12-1 WP Wells (8-1)
MGH 4-10-0 LP John Halama (2-4)
Game #3: Ryan Klesko in the lead off spot goes 3 for 4, 4 rbis, TWO homers (11, 12) and Bandits go up 7-2 by the top of the 6th. Ramon Hernandez adds his 1st homer of the year to that mix. Then the Gas Hornets take their turn and a 4 run 7th ties the game and another run in the 8th gives them the lead and Donnie Wall makes it stand (oh, but we have a shaky bullpen – and starters…..more to come).
BDB 7-11-0 LP David Weathers (1-2) BS (1)
MGH 8-16-0 WP Matt Morris (1-0) S Wall (5)
Game #4: 29 runs and 37 hits! PLUS 15 walks!!! And that walks made the difference.
Manhattan enjoys a big day. 3 runs in the 1st AND 2nd sees a happy crowd until Blarney Drive matches those 6 runs in their half of the 3rd. Then after we regain the lead in the bottom half, the Bandits steal 3 more runs in the 4th! Rob Bell gives up 7 walks and 4 hits in his 4 innings – and 9 runs!! Erubiel Durazo is having a blast – 2 of them (6, 7).
But heck, down 10-7 going into the bottom of the 5th, we see Manhattan add 7 more runs over the next 4 innings. Garrett Anderson gets 3 hits, homer #13 and 5 rbis to get Manhattan up 14-11 heading into the 9th! Yay! – BOO. Top of the 9th and Donnie Wall can’t get it done and the Bandits score 4 runs (including a Shawn Green 3 run homer (5) to talk a 15-14 lead. Come on. But we can get it back in the bottom half. Bobby Howry had other plans and puts us down in order to save the game! What a game.
BDB 15-16-0 WP Jeff Tam (3-1) S Howry (6) BS Herges (3)
MGH 14-19-2 LP Wall (2-2) BS (1)
Game #5: No more excitement! Please… Bandits plate 2 in the 1st as Magglio Ordonez drives in 2 of his 3 rbis for the game. Gas Hornets respond with 3 in the 1st and 3 more in the 2nd Then they add 2 more in the 5th and another 3 spot in the 6th. Tim Wakefield cruising. Up 11-2 in the 9th Wakefield starts inning giving up a homer (Green#6) and then Shane Reynolds comes in and gives up 3 hits, 2 walks and Bandits keep crossing home plate. Lopez gets a 2 run PH homer (4) and finally Gas Hornets turn the ball over to Matt Williams with 3 runners on. He gives up a hit and now the scores is 11-8 with 2 outs and finally, we get the 3rd out to preserve a win. That’s 10 runs we’ve given up in the 9th inning over the last 2 games!
BDB 8- 9-2 LP Randy Johnson (9-1) 1st loss of the year!
MGH 11-11-0 WP Wakefield (6-2)
Game #6: Series finale – let’s get this series over! OK we get 1 in the 1st on Jason Kendall single. Next time he’s up he gets HBP and leaves for 2 days. And Blarney Drives goes up 2-1 in the 3rd then 3-2 in the 4th and 4-3 in the 6th. Durazon homers (8) along the way. In the 8th, Clapinski and Alicea get rbis and the Gas Hornets regain the lead for the 1st time since the 1st. But then we head to the 9th up 5-4 and turning it over to the bullpen. Really? Well Matt Mantei doesn’t disappoint. He gets the 1st two. Then he gives up a single to Brett Mayne (his 3rd hit), Jeff Frye in to PR but Dean Palmer flies out to end the game and with a big sigh of relief, the crowd goes home happy.
BDB 4-10-1 LP Tam (3-2) BS (2)
MGH 5- 9-1 WP Rick Reed (6-2) S Mantei (1)
Series Summary: This was the blood pressure series with MGH coming out ahead 4-2 but it didn’t seem like a victory. We need some better pitching and have to hope the offense keeps performing in order to give us a chance. Blarney Drive is really GOOD!

Monroeville Maulers @ California Quakes
