Houghton Penguins @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: Houghton visits Castle Rock as we get ready to finish the first third of the season. The Penguins are in first place in the AL East despite a record of 22-24, while Castle Rock is in second in the AL West with a 27-19 record. Castle Rock has been superb at home, sporting a 16-2 record. Not sure what’s in the water here in Castle Rock.
Game #1: You know it’s going to be high scoring as we have Davis (5) and Mulholland (3) on the mound for the series opener. And, the two teams don’t disappoint. Both teams get 12 hits, but Houghton is able to get the clutch hits, as they take it by a score of 10-6.

Castle Rock grounds into four double plays, which really killed their rallies. Houghton hits 11 singles and gets 6 walks to take the victory.

WP: Buehrle (6-0)
LP: Davis (0-1)

Game #2: Another subpar pitcher takes the mound for each team, as Chris Carpenter (3) faces Pat Rapp (4). Castle Rock just trying to get Carpenter his minimum MBF to keep him until he gets good!

Despite hitting into doubles plays in the first three innings (seriously!??), Castle Rock takes a 7-0 lead off a series of singles and HBP’s. But, Houghton gets two in the 4th and two in the 6th to cut the deficit to 7-4, as they finally get to Carpenter.

Houghton is up to some dirty tricks as THREE pitchers are ejected for hitting five batters (Tatis is beaned twice and Easley, Snow and DiFelice one each). Castle Rock hits into four total double plays, but it doesn’t matter as they take it by a 10-5 score.

WP: Carpenter (1-0)
LP: Rapp (4-4)

Game #3: A little better pitching matchup as Reuter (8) faces Dreifort (10). It’s a 1-1 game after five innings, as each pitcher is doing pretty well. Castle Rock breaks through for another run in the 6th, with a Sweeney double followed by a Dye single. But their second GIDP of the game quashes a bigger rally, and it stays at 2-1. That is the score as we head to the top of the 9th.

Houghton leads off the bottom of the 9th with back-to-back walks off of Benitez (22W). But Matt Lawton grounds into a double play. Tejada then walks, so it is first and third with two outs and Jeff Kent at the plate. Kent pops out to first and Castle Rock takes the victory in dramatic fashion.

WP: Dreifort (7-2)
LP: Reuter (4-4)
S: Benitez (10)

Game #4: A SP advantage to Castle Rock as Pettitte (10) faces Rupe (3). But, Houghton gets to Pettitte early with three runs in the 2nd inning off of a costly Hounds error. It is 4-3 Houghton, when Rupe is pulled in the 5th inning after surrendering a solo HR to Dye. But, Houghton will not be denied offensively, as they plate four more runs in the 7th to take a 9-3 lead.

It’s 10-3 when Crabtree takes the mound for Houghton in the bottom of the 9th. He proceeds to hit the first batter he faces, Sweeney, and is ejected for the second time in the series! But, it doesn’t matter as the final 10-3, Houghton and the series is split at 2-2.

WP: Cormier (2-1)
LP: Pettitte (4-2)

Game #5: Dotel vs. Elarton in this one. It’s all Castle Rock early, as they take a 4-1 lead, but Tyler Houston delivers a pinch-hit two-run HR in the top of the 7th to cut the lead to 4-3. But, Royce Clayton delivers a clutch two-run HR of his own to make it 6-3. Castle Rock has homers from Placido Polanco and Clayton in this one, not relying on the big four of Bonds/Gonzalez/Dye/Sweeney to produce everything.

Castle Rock piles a bunch more in the 8th, as the big guns do deliver. The final is 10-5, Castle Rock as Houghton gets a couple of runs in the 9th. Despite giving up two runs in the 9th, and raising his ERA to 10.24 (pretty crappy for a 10), Wetteland gets a save.

WP: Elarton (3-5)
LP: Dotel (1-5)
S: Wetteland (1)

Game #6: Castle Rock looking for a series win, as Houghton tries to salvage a split. Davis vs. Mulholland in a rematch of the series opener that went to Houghton. The winning team has scored 10 runs in 4 of the 5 games, which seems kind of odd. Let’s see if it holds up.

Houghton jumps out quick behind a Kent HR, and takes a 2-0 lead in the first. But, it doesn’t last long, as Castle Rock responds with three runs in the bottom half. Mulholland is chased with just one out in the second, as Snow delivers an RBI single to give Castle Rock a 4-2 lead. That’s how it stands until Tatis gets a clutch double to make it 6-2, Castle Rock, in the 5th.

Tatis delivers again in the 7th, with a 3-run HR to give Castle Rock a 10-3 lead. Each team adds one in the 8th, as the final is 11-4 (no 10-run winning team this time).

WP: Davis (1-1)
LP: Mulholland (2-5)

Series Summary: Castle Rock takes the series 4-2. Lots of double plays, lots of walks, lots of hit batters. A pretty ugly series, but we’ll take the outcome.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – California 3

Win: Mike Morgan 4-2 (3.98)
Loss: Gil Meche 2-1 (5.51)
Save: Justin Speier #7

Game #5: All Chicago. The 3 & 4 Hitters – Carlos Delgado (3 for 3 with a Home Run & 3 RBIs) & Charles Johnson (1 for 3 with a Double & 4 RBIs) did the main damage as Chicago blows out the Quakes.

Final Score: Chicago 10 – California 0

Win: Pedro Martinez 8-0 (1.16)
Loss: Randy Wolf 4-5 (6.42)

Game #6: Edgar Renteria has a Home Run & 2 RBIs as Chicago squeaks by the Quakes.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – California 3

Win: Nelson P. Cruz 2-1 (2.08)
Loss: Scott Strickland 0-1 (3.52)
Save: Justin Speier #8

Series Summary: Chicago takes the series 5 games to 1. Their only loss comes in Extra Innings & that lone win for California prevents a hometown sweep of the Quakes by the Demolition.

Game #1: CRH 1-3-0 / MVM 5-12-0
L-TRACHEL 4-2, vs W-Brian Tollberg 4-2CBL starts the scoring in the 1st plating one. MVM takes the lead 3-1 on a Ramon Martinez 2-run HR. One more in the 6th and 8th innings for the Maulers as Brian Tollberg pitches 8.1 allowing only 3 hits and Ray King gets .2 for his SV8. MVM 5-1.

W-BALDWIN 6-3 vs L- Jon Lieber 5-4The Bootleggers make quick work of Jon Lieber with 4 in the first and 2 in the 2nd sending him to an early shower. Jose Acevedo is on to extinguish the fire and he finally lives up to the hype pitching 3, 1 hit innings. But the Mauler bullpen falls apart after that and allows 7 runs as CBL pounds out 13 runs on 14 hits. I’d say that’s an efficient use of the lumber! Some Mauler lightning late but all too little. CBL 13-5.

Jose Acevedo comes on once again to squelch the CBL onslaught giving MVM 5.2 scoreless innings on 2 hits as the Maulers start to chip away with 3 in the 4th and 2 more in the 7th, and what an 8th inning it was! Mauler’s plate 8 runs including a GSHR by Jacque Jones his 2nd of the season! MVM steals the game 13-8.

L-ELARTON 1-5, vs W- Jose Acevedo 2-3Pitchers dual through 5 as Scott Schoeneweis continues his fine display of starting pitching while protecting a slim Mauler 2-1 lead. However, the magic finally runs out in the 6th as the Bootleggers plate 3 and then 3 more in the 7th off of the Maulers’ bullpen. CBL adds the cream on top with a 4-run 9th providing SPENCER with his first win of the season. CBL 11-3

Series Summary: CBL 37/51/3 – MVM 35/46/2
The MAULERS take the series 4-2 although getting out hit and outscored. They keep the heat in a hot kitchen on the Demolition. For once MVM plays some fine defense that definitely helped in the series along with tough pitching when needed and then the 8-run onslaught for a come-from-behind victory in game 4. The Bootleggers are better than their record states MVM is fortunate to get out of this series with 4 wins.
