Blarney Drive Bandits @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: For the 2nd straight home series, the Gas Hornets host a division leader, this time it’s Blarney Drive and their Bandits and Mike Hampton and Randy Johnson (probably reasons Manhattan hasn’t gone into the trade market this year – YET!!)
Game #1: In the 1st meeting of Mike Hampton vs. Brian Moehler, some how the Gas Hornets prevail. It was mostly because Moehler was really good (or lucky) and held the Bandits to 1 run through 7 innings and his team plated 5 off Hampton including 4 in the 4th. NOTE – 4 of those 4 were unearned as the Bandits committed 4 errors. Good thing for Manhattan, because Moehler and the bullpen struggled big time in the 8th giving up 3 runs. Brent Mayne was the biggest bat for Blarney Drive going 3 for 4, 3 rbis and 2 doubles. Tino Martinez swats #16.
BDB 4-11-4 LP Hampton (6-4)
MGH 6-10-0 WP Moehler (2-3) S Wetteland (4)
Game #2: The 2nd tilt was quite different with each team’s pitching staff limiting the other team to 3 hits. Manhattan broke the 0-0 tie in the 1st on Tino Martinez rbi single. Magglio Ordonez ties it up with a solo homer (10) in the 4th. Shawn Green puts the Bandits on top 2-1 in the 8th on a SF and Greg Swindell and John Johnstone make it stand up.
BDB 2-3-0 WP David Well (6-2) S Johnstone (10)
MGH 1-3-0 LP Tim Wakefield (6-3)
Game #3: Ace Sterling Hitchcock (really) tosses a 6 hit complete game shutout. But it wasn’t an easy win. Gas Hornets plate 1 in the 2nd on a Derek Jeter single – and that was it. Masato Yoshi scattered 9 hits in 6.1 innings and Greg Swindell gave up nothing in 1.2 innings.
BDB 0-6-3 LP Yoshi (6-3)
MGH 1-9-0 WP Hitchcock (8-2)
Game #4: Manhattan then explodes for 16 hits and 13 runs off Andy Benes and a bunch of relievers. Ray Durham (6), Matt Stairs (15), Craig Wilson (1) homer – Stairs drives in 5 on 2 hits. Durham leaves the game and will miss 5 days as a result of a retaliatory HBP (reports are being filed).

The other element in the game, Manhattan’s starter Rick Reed flashed some previous year’s stardom going the distance, giving up 2 hits a walk and facing only 29 batters!!
BDB 0- 2-0 LP Benes (5-4)
MGH 13-16-0 WP Reed (5-4)

Game #5: Well this one was over early – Manhattan’s starter Pete Schourek gives up 3 hits in the 1st and 2nd – all solo homers; Brian Giles (17), Dean Palmer (10), and Magglio Ordonez (11). Palmer goes on to get 2 more hits and 3 rbis total as every Bandit gets at least 1 hit in the game. Shawn Dunston leaned too far into a pitch and will miss 11 days!

Oh – and like last game, the Bandits starter, Randy Johnson, was the big star. 7 innings, 4 hits, 8 ks, NO RUNS.
BDB 9-17-0 WP Johnson (8-2)
MGH 0- 4-0 LP Schourek (1-2)

Game #6: Gas Hornets have chance to snap up the series while the Bandits seek to break evern. It’s Mike Hampton vs. Brian Moehler take 2! Hampton again is victim to defense gaffaws and gives up 5 runs – 3 earned in 6 innings. However, in those same 6 innings, his team scored 11 times including 4 in the 1st and the 6th! Magglio Ordonez (12) and Dean Palmer (11) go deep again. Palmer was 5 for 5 with 3 runs and 3 rbis!! 13 hits and 7 walks will score you a lot of runs. So the Bandits gain the series split.
BDB 11-13-2 WP Hampton (7-4)
MGH 5- 9-1 LP Moehler (2-4)
Series Summary: Again a 3-3 split against a top team, I guess that’s not bad. Of course we were again without Jason Kendall (for both these big series) as the opposition has found hitting him is their best weapon. I only mention Kendall because he’s batting .483 and that’s a big chunk of our attack. But we still lack starters and bullpen depth.
