Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Santa Rosa Beach Bums

Series Preview: Santa Rosa Beach welcomes the Goldeyes to the Emerald coast for a 6 game set. Both teams are battling for playoff spots. As I temporarily take over for the co-GM, I am humbled and not sure I can match his managerial acumen.
Game #1: The Goldeyes call on Glavine (6-3, 5.26) for the opener and the Bums Rosado (3-6, 3.44). Goldeyes O’Neil lead off the 2nd with a dinger. Bums Santiago matched that in the 3rd. Tie game. In the bottom of the 7th Bums Hidalgo walked, Santiago singled, and Alomar walked to fill the bases with 1-out. With the infield in Thomas lifted one to left and Hidalgo beat the Buhner throw, Bums 2-1. In the 9th Goldeyes pinch hitter Lofton singled, advanced to 3rd on a pinch hit Myers single and scored on a Belliard bunt. Tie game. Game reset. In the bottom of the 11th, Bums Caminiti lead off with a single, was off and running and scored on a Loretta double. Bums win 3-2.
Winnipeg 2 7 1 LP: Nitkowski 2b: Ventura, McGwire, Lopez; HR: O’Neill; SH: Belliard; Sb: Everett.
Santa Rosa Beach 3 7 0` WP: Miller 2b: Sanders, Loretta; HR: Santiago; HBP: Thomas; SF: Thomas.
Game #2: The Goldeyes call on Tapani (4-3, 5.71) to face Bums Smoltz (9-1, 3.08). In the 2nd Bums Caminiti reached on a Vizuel error, advanced on a Loretta infield single and scored on a Encarnacion single, 0-out. In the next at bat Perez lifted one to center scoring Loretta. In the next at bat Reed banged an RBI single. Bums 3-zip. O’Neill did it again, leading off the 7th with a dinger. In the 8th McGwire followed up with Vizquel on board to tie it up. Game Reset. In the bottom half with 1-out Sanders drew a walk and Caminiti doubled. Infield in. Loretta drilled it over first for one. Infield in again. Encarnacion lifted one to left. Caminiti plods down the line and Loretta is going for second. Everett takes the sure out allowing Caminiti to score, Bums 5-3. Naulty and Karsay close out.
Winnipeg 3 7 1 LP: Escobar 2b: Lofton, McGwire, Morandini; HR: McGwire, Morandini.
Santa Rosa beach 5 6 0 WP: Naulty 2b: Caminiti, Loretta; SF: Encarnacion, Perez; H: Almanza; S: Karsay.
Game #3: Goldeyes go with Anderson (3-1, 4.36) and the Bums Ortiz (5-5, 4.52). Goldeyes Everett went deep in the 1st. In the 4th, Vizquel walked, stole and scored on a Belliard single, 2-0 Goldeyes. In the bottom half Loretta singled and came all the way around on an Encarnacion 2-out double. In the 7th Goldeyes Belliard and O’Neill leadoff with singles to chase Ortiz and Morandini kept it going for one, two batters later Lofton dropped a double for another, then Everett lifted one to right and Morandini tested Hidalgo arm and found out the rumors were true. Goldeyes 4-1.
Winnipeg 4 7 0 WP: Anderson 2b: Lofton; HR: Everett; Sb: Lofton, Vizquel; H: Reed, Nitkowski; S: Shaw.
Santa Rosa Beach 1 5 2 LP: Ortiz 2b: Alomar, Encarnacion; Sb: Alomar.
Game #4: To keep the momentum the Goldeyes bring in Schilling (4-5, 5.20) for the Bums Rapp (7-2, 3.66). Goose eggs until the bottom of the 4th when Bums Thomas went deep. With 2-out in the 5th Goldeyes Morandini singled and Myers drove a double to right field. Morandini decided to test Rios’ arm and this time won to tie it up. Game reset. Bums Rios and Sanders leadoff the bottom of the 7th with singles and Ducey reached to fill the bases as x-Bum Myers interfered with his swing. Bases loaded, 1-out. Then schilling drilled Loretta taking one for the team. And Loretta cannot continue for the rest of the series. Perez than lifted one to Everett and Sanders trotted home for the second of the inning. Bums 3-1. Goldeyes Myers and Lofton turn the tables with a a single and double in the 8th. 1-out. Goldeyes start off the 9th with an Everett walk and Quinn pitch hit single. But Karsay holds.
Winnipeg 1 7 1 LP: Schilling 2b: Lofton, Vizquel, Myers; HBP: Everett.
Santa Rosa Beach 3 4 0 WP: Rapp HR: Thomas; HBP: Loretta; SF: Perez; H: Miller, Almanza, Runyan; S: Karsay.
Game #5: Goldeyes call on Reynoso (5-4, 6.16) to turn things around and the Bums go with Rosado (3-6, 3.34) on short rest. Ooo, are tempers fraying as pitchers on both sides are drilling batters. And Rosado is ejected as Everett is injured. Vizuel followed with a walk and McGwire an RBI single. In the bottom half Alomar and Thomas drew walks and Koskie banged a 2-out RBI single. Tie game and reset. With 2-out in the 4th Goldeyes Morandini doubled and the manager left Rodriguez, the fans and press will be questioning that move, as Matheny followed with an RBI single. Goldeyes Ventura send one into orbit with 2-out in the 5th, Goldeyes 3-1. With 2-out in the 6th and Matheny on first, Lofton doubled him home. In the bottom half, Koskie singled, VanderWal doubled and Cruz drilled a pinch hit 3-run homer to tie the game. Another reset. In their next at bat Lofton leadoff with a double and scored on a Perez throwing error. Goldeyes 5-4. Sometime weird things happen and Rios and Sanders ended up on first and third with 1-out and Cruz (again) lifted one to left scoring Sanders. Tied up. Game Reset #3. Goldeyes Quinn leadoff the 9th with a double. McGwire singled to make it first and third with 1-out. Infield in. Ventura up. He walked to fill the bases. Infield in. Belliard lifted one to right and Quinn raced down the line for the go ahead run. Goldeyes 6-5. Shaw closes it out. 1-2-3-4.
Winnipeg 6 10 0 WP: Frascatore 2b: Lofton, Quinn, Vizquel, Morandini; HR: Ventura; HBP: Everett; SF: Belliard; S: Shaw.
Santa Rosa Beach 5 4 1 LP: Miller 2b: Vanderwal; HR: Cruz; HBP: Sanders, Encarnacion; SF: Cruz.
Game #6: Goldeyes want to even up the series and call on Glavine (6-3, 5.01) and the Bums want to win the series and call on Smoltz (9-1, 2.95) on short rest. In the 1st Bums Alomar drew a walk, Sanders singled, and Caminiti banged an RBI single. In the 5th Javier and Morandini singled and with 2-out Vizquel doubled into the right field corner, Goldeyes 2-1. McGwire followed that up with a 2-run shot. In the bottom half VanderWal doubled, advanced on a passed ball and advanced again plodding home on a Hidalgo fly to Javier. Santiago immediately followed with a walk and Alomar a double. Nothing. Goldeyes 4-2. In the 6th Bums Caminiti and Encarnacion leadoff with a single and hit batsman. Winnipeg pitchers are at plucking again. With 1-out VanderWal drew a walk to fill the bases. Hidalgo lifted it to center. Caminiti plods toward home and Encarnacion goes for third! Encarnacion did not make it, but Caminiti did. Goldeyes 4-3. Smoltz leaves. In the 7th McGwire walked and Ventura doubled and McGwire crawled all the way around to give the Goldeyes a 2-run lead. Caminiti makes it a 1-run game again with a dinger in the 8th. Goldeyes Lofton leadoff the 9th with a walk and Vizquel drilled another into the right filed corner scoring Lofton, 6-4. Shaw leaves the inning early, but Kim can finish.

Santa Rosa Beach 4 8 0 LP: Smoltz 2b: Alomar, VanderWal; HR: Caminiti; HBP: Ecarnacion; SF: Hidalgo 2; Sb: Alomar.
Series Summary: Bums and Goldeyes wrestle to a standoff.

Castle Rock Hounds @ Harper Woods Expos

Series Preview: Castle Rock looking to take a few games at home from a solid Harper Woods squad.
Game #1: Elarton gets the spot start for Castle Rock vs. Powell. Hounds jump out to an early 4-1 lead and don’t look back as they take it 6-3. Six different guys had one RBI each for Castle Rock, including a solo HR from Snow.

WP: Elarton (2-2)
LP: Powell (1-3)

Game #2: John Burkett getting his obligatory home spot start as we try to pump his batters faced up. He will square off against Mike Oquist. We could be seeing a lot of runs this game. It was a tie game at 4-4 going into the bottom of the 6th, but Castle Rock explodes for six more runs and takes it 10-4. Michael Barrett was the offensive hero for the Hounds with 4 RBI, including a 3-run homer. In an odd move, the Harper Woods manager brought in Mussina to relieve, and now he might not be available for his next start.

WP: Burkett (1-2)
LP: Oquist (1-9)

Game #3: Pettitte vs. Eric Gagne in this one. Gagne is a 20, but this looks like it could be his last start as he has only 16% of 135 MBF remaining as we start the contest. Harper Woods jumps out to a 6-1 lead in the 3rd, highlighted by a 3-run Deshields homer. But, Castle Rock is battling still, as Mieske pokes one out to cut it to 6-3 in the bottom of the 3rd. The score would stay that way until the top of the 8th, when Harper Woods scores 4 to break things wide open. The final is 10-3, Expos.

WP: Gagne (4-2)
LP: Pettitte (3-4)

Game #4: Erickson and Hermanson in this one. Castle Rock scores at least one run in each of the first five innings and comes out with the 10-4 victory (same score as the victory in Game 2). The Hounds string together 13 hits, including homers from Tatis and Clayton. Tatis is batting .345 on the season.

WP: Hermanson (7-2)
LP: Erickson (4-6)

Game #5: Dreifort vs. Mussina, as Harper Woods has the pitching advantage in this one. Castle Rock keeps hanging in this one, as they make it 4-4 on a Luis Gonzalez HR in the bottom of the 5th, despite 3 errors in the first five innings. In the bottom of the 7th, Dave Roberts with a 29 arm, somehow manages to throw out Tatis (17 speed) on a sac fly to keep it tied at 4-4. Bonds delivers a pinch-hit sac fly to score Gilkey (Roberts couldn’t throw the guy out this time) in the bottom of the 8th. Benitez came on to close out the 8th and earns the victory. 5-4, Castle Rock.

WP: Benitez (3-2)
LP: Mussina (5-6)

Game #6: It’s a rematch of Game 1, Elarton vs. Powell. Expos hop all over Elarton and go up 4-0. But, Castle Rock fights back to cut it to 4-3 in the 5th. In the bottom of the 8th, Butch Huskey delivers a huge 2-out, 2-run homer to give Castle Rock the 5-4 lead. Benitez comes on to close it out for Castle Rock.

WP: Quantrill (3-0)
LP: Anderson (0-1)
S: Benitez (16)

Series Summary: Castle Rock takes 5 out of 6 from Harper Woods to stay safely within the wildcard race as we get closer to the season mid-point. Castle Rock had a pair of 5-4 and a pair of 10-4, victories.

Portland Mavericks @ Stockton Wings

Series Preview: Portland @ Stockton for 6 games.
Series Summary: Series split 3-3.

Hollywood Vampires @ Valdosta Bombers

Series Summary: A VERY frustrating series for the Bombers, as they stranded a ridiculous 54 base runners. The Vampires always seemed to get the big 2-out hit while the Bombers were leaving ’em loaded…a lot! Hollywood takes 4 of 6.

Southlake Scorpions @ DeWitt Tigers

Series Summary: DeWitt and Southlake battle to a split.

Chicago Demolition @ Corktown Bootleggers

Series Preview: The 1998 ALCS rematch comes to Corktown.
Game #1: Chicago 5-2
Game #2: Chicago 4-1
Game #3: Clemens goes 8 2 hit shutout innings. Enters the 9th up 2-0 and gives up a leadoff single. Chicago goes to the pen and Corktown scores 3 to walk it off and spoil the Rocket’s stellar performance and give the Bootleggers their first W of the series.
Game #4: 2 Dingers for Tony Clark.
Chicago 9-2
Game #5: Corktown takes a 6-0 lead to the 9th where Chicago proceeds to score 6 and tie the game. They had bases loaded because every reliever Corktown threw out couldn’t find the strike zone, but somehow was able to get the final out. With 2 outs and nobody on in the bottom of the 9th , Brad Ausmas sends one into the seats to walk it off. Corktown would have been shook if they lost that game.
Corktown 7-6
Game #6: All Bootleggers scoring 14 runs on only 2 HR. Chicago had 11 hits in this game.
Corktown 14-4
Series Summary: Chicago and Corktown split the series of 6. Chicago starting pitching is stellar, but the Demolition came with the bats in this one as well scoring 30 runs. Chicago could be a sleeper if they sneak into the postseason with that rotation.

Danbury Mad Hatters @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Some Manhattan retooling and still dealing with injuries, plus return of Jason Kendall and we hope for an optimistic week – and we’re facing Danbury who is hovering around .500 and just a few games below the Gas Hornets pace – plus they got Ken Griffey, Jr. and a few more goodies!
Game #1: Spot starter Jim Brower goes 6 innings of 3 hit shutout ball and John Wetteland follows with a long 3 inning relief sting to get a save as Manhattan takes the opener 6-0! But they lose Damian Jackson for the rest of the series and into next week – he’s been a remarkable fill-in at DH, but that job is now primarily a Tino Martinez chore with the addition of Rico Brogna. Brogna gets a single in his Manhattan debut. Derek Jeter and Dave Martinez lead the Gas Hornets attack with 2 rbis each. Matt Walbeck collects 2 hits for the Mad Hatters who were mad after the game at their performance.
DMH 0- 7-0 LP Miguel Batista (1-4)
MGH 6-13-0 WP Brower (2-0) S Wetteland (5)
Game #2: After a long slow start that sees the game enter the 8th at 2-1 Gas Hornets, Manhattan erupts for 7 runs – 5 unearned – in the 8th to pull away with a 9-2 win. Bruce Aven makes the costly mistake – he did have 1 of the rbis for Danbury on a triple, but it was not enough. Darren Oliver was strong until the 8th and Scott Sanders couldn’t get the final out in the 8th for a long time. Jay Bell, 2 for 4 as what Brooks Fordyce. Tino Martinez clubs #17, Rico Brogna gets 2 hits as does Derek Jeter (2 rbis) and Craig Wilson. New quarterback Pat Mahomes gets an inning of scoreless relief under his new Gas Hornets belt.
DMH 2- 9-1 LP Oliver (3-3)
MGH 9-14-1 WP Tim Wakefield (7-3) S Donnie Wall (3)
Game #3: Sterling Hitchcock gives up a leadoff double to Roger Cedeno and then an rbi single to Craig Biggio to start the game. Then he goes 7.1 innings giving up only 5 more hits, fanning 7 and no runs. Matt Mantei keeps it that way. Meanwhile Kent Mercker was roughed up in the 3rd and 4th for 6 hits and 3 runs, 3 walks, and leaves the game. Rudy Seanez and Mark Remlinger finish it up with no more Gas Hornets scoring, but the 3-1 score leaves Manhattan winners for the 3rd time in a row.
DMH 1- 8-0 LP Mercker (4-3)
MGH 3-10-2 WP Hitchcock (9-2) S Mantei (8)
Game #4: Well the bullpens got the workout in this 14 inning game – with Mark Remlinger seeing 5 innings off relief after Jeff Nelson’s 3.1 innings. Both teams plate 2 in the 1st, the Danbury rattles of another in the 3rd and 4 big ones in the 4th – including a Jay Bell homer (12). Meanwhile, down 7-2 in the 4th, Manhattan chips away with 3 runs of their own and then added solo runs in the 6th and 7th to tie it. Then there were some spotty chances, but essentially the bullpens took over. The game finally ended in the 14th on a Garrett Anderson walk-off homer (11). Derek Jeter left the game early after getting HBP, indications are he’ll be back tomorrow.
Ken Griffey, Jr. was 3 for 6 with runs and rbi and SB to lead the Mad Hatters hitters.
DMH 7-12-1 LP Derek Lowe (0-5) BS Remlinger (2) 14 innings
MGH 8-10-0 WP Norm Charlton (2-0)
Game #5: 10 runs were scored in this one and all of them were attributable to homers. Jay Bell a 2 run blast in the 4th and Jim Thome a solo homer in the 9th (9). Manhattan got a 2 run shot from Stairs (16) in the 2nd, solo homers from Jason Kendall (2) and Garrett Anderson (12) in the 4th and 5th and a 3 run Rico Brogna (5) homers in the 6th. Add it up, the Gas Hornets win it 7-3 as they are outhit for the 2nd straight game.
DMH 3-11-0 LP Brett Tomko (1-4) he gives up all 4 MGH homers
MGH 7- 9-2 WP Brian Moehler (3-4) S Wil Cunnane (1)
Game #6: The finale sees the Gas Hornets bring out the whooping sticks and slug 4 more homers: Jason Kendall (3), Tino Martinez (18), Garrett Anderson (13) and Craig Wilson (2). The Mad Hatters get their 3 runs on a 2 run Ken Griffey, Jr. homer (18) and a Gary DiSarcina solo shot (1). Miguel Batista is again ousted by a decent Jim Brower outing.
DMH 3- 7-0 LP Batista (1-5)
MGH 9-17-0 WP Brower (3-0), S Wil Cunnane (2)
Series Summary: Manhattan sweeps the series – BUT THEY ARE STILL LOOKING for a starter – grade 8 or above.
Garrett Anderson has a good week, hitting .320 with 3 homers, 6 rbis and 8 runs scored. Next week we go to Hampton and Danbury heads home to host Michigan.
