Game #6: Newark 6-2. Carlos Perez again allowed no earned runs in 7 IP to earn his 12th win of the campaign. Tom Candiotti dropped to 13-10.
Series Summary: Bombers take 4 of 6 and pull within 17 games of the Bears.

Hampton Huskies @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Hampton comes to town – the team has awakened and the Gas Hornets took notice and made a few trades this past week. Two of those guys now grace the Manhattan dugout and hope to make contributions fast. Gas Hornets have great chance to whittle down the Magic # while the Huskies can take a big bite out of the Manhattan lead. Do I hear Mush???
Game #1: Rick Reed is big in this one, pitching a 2 hitter for 6 innings (8ks). And then Mike Williams gets 1 inning of scoreless relief in his 1st Manhattan appearance. Gregg Jefferies smacks a double and scores 1. But let’s get back to Reed – he homers (1) to help his cause in a 4-0 Gas Hornets win!
HAM 0- 3-2 LP Kent Bottenfield (5-4)
MGH 4-11-0 WP Reed (11-5)
Game #2: Jason Kendall homers (17) in the 1st but Hampton storms back for 2 in the 2nd on a Henry Rodriguez homer (20) and a Juan Guzman SF! But then the Gas Hornets added two more solo homers – Derek Jeter (19) and Garrett Anderson (11) and Kendall drives in another run and Dave Telegheder gives up nothing else and quartet of relievers make him a winner!
HAM 2-5-0 LP Guzman (9-11)
MGH 5-9-0 WP Telegheder (6-0) S John Wetteland (17)
Game #3: Gas Hornets again rely on stellar pitching, this time from Sterling Hitchcock who goes 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, a Ricky Gutierrez single in the 2nd. That was it, but the Huskies enjoyed basestealing. Brian McRae swiped 2 and Eric Young got one.

Biggest problem however was the Huskies removing Rolando Arrojo. He pitches 6 strong 4 hit innings and left for a PHitter in the 7th. Score was 1-1 at the time. Chad Bradford comes in and Manhattan gets him for 1 run and then Danny Graves bails him out of 2 runner jam in the 7th, but Graves gets racked for 3 runs in the 8th (2 hits, walk and a Greg Vaughn error) and the Gas Hornets pull this out 5-1. And Mike Williams pitches the final 2 for his 1st Manhattan save!
HAM 1-5-1 LP Bradford (1-2)
MGH 5-8-0 WP Mantei (5-2) S Mike Williams (15)

Game #4: Gas Hornets get a rare complete game as Brian Moehler continues his strong pitching this year going the distance giving up just 1 hit – 5th inning leadoff single by Derrek Lee. Rick White was effective in his 5.1 innings, scattering 7 hits but a Ray Durham single in the 5th got the Gas Hornets a run. Ed Giovanola added some insurance with a solo shot (2) in the 7th and the Gas Hornets won their 4th game of the series 2-0.
HAM 0- 1-1 LP White (4-4)
MGH 2-10-1 WP Moehler (14-5)
Game #5: Good fortunes continue for Manhattan as Tim Wakefield goes 6.2 giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, 1 of them a Scott Hatteberg solo homer (14). However Manhattan gets 3 in the 4th and 3 more in the 8th as Tino Martinez (31) and Garrett Anderson (12) crack 2 run homers. Wakefield even contributes with a SF. Jeremy Burnitz gets 3 hits and an rbi (and a double). Billy Spiers goes 2 for 4 in the losing cause.
HAM 3-9-2 LP Brett Tomko (15-7)
MGH 7-8-0 WP Wakefield (15-4)
Game #6: Well they say all good things come to an end and so did this weeks chance for a sweep. Manhattan strikes 1st when Jason Kendall singles in Ray Durham in the 1st. But that was the end of the Gas Hornets offense. Kent Bottenfield was tough for 7 innings! But Rick Reed was tossing goose eggs – until the 6th. The Huskies get to him for a 2 run Jeremy Burnitz homer (24) and then Greg Vaughn immediately follows with his 51st!! And that was that – no more Hamptons offense. But it was enough as Chad Bradford this time holds the Manhattan bats in check and Tom Gordon does his flash things to close it out.
HAM 3-4-1 WP Bottenfield (6-4) S Gordon (27)
MGH 1-4-2 LP Reed (11-6)
