Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview: Battle of first place teams. Manhattan at Winnipeg.
Game #1: Glavine pitches like the ace he is and throws a 2 hitter. Big Mac hits a 3 run homer. WGE 3 MGH 0.
Game #2: Schilling 8 shutout but so did Reed. Was until a walk off rbi in the 9th. WGE 1MGH 0.
Game #3: McGwire 3 run homer again and Lofton his on as well as Winnipeg wins 9-3.
Game #4: Spencer gives Big Mac a blow and boy it was the right move 2 homers and a double by Spencer. Thompson excellent again 4-1 Winnipeg.
Game #5: Tino finally wakes up with a 3 run homer but its not enough as Winnipeg singled them to death 9-3.
Game #6: Finally Gas hornet hits wake up and hit Glavine get 7 runs off the ace. Manhatton win 10-8 in the 10th off Shaw.
Series Summary: Winnipeg pitching dominated as the Goldeyes win 5 of 6 and it was not until the final two games did the Gas Hornets hit.

On the league leader boards the Panthers are first in batting average at .305 and the Bootleggers are 2nd at .299. The Bootleggers lead in homers with 200 while the Panthers are a distant 3rd with 127. Corktown is on top in runs scored and Ft. Worth is second. The Panthers are also 2nd best in slugging, on base percentage, and ERA at 3.54 to you guessed it – Corktown who are on top in slugging and on base percentage and lead in ERA at 3.43.

Game #1: Kevin Brown gets his 20th win by throwing a complete game 5 hit shutout.The Panthers get to the Bootleggers pitching for 12 hits and 4 runs.

Game #2: Albert Belle hit two – two run homers and Arod added a solo blast leading the Bootleggers to 5 – 0 lead while the Corktown bullpen put the fire out as they held on to take game 2.

Final Score: Bootleggers 5, Panthers 3

Game #3: This time Ft. Worth leaped ahead 5-0 on the strength of 3 doubles by 3 different players and saw their closer come in with two outs in the 8th to shut the door on a Bootlegger comeback attempt.

Final Score: Panthers 6, Bootleggers 3

Game #4: Corktown was all over Ft. Worth starter Brian Anderson for 14 hits and 8 earned runs including 5 home runs. Somehow Anderson made it through 7 innings, but this game was ver after the Bootleggers scored 7 in the 4th.

Final Score: Bootleggers 11, Panthers 3

Game #5: Best game of the series.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 4th Rondell White tripled home one run and later scored on a sac fly by Fred McGriff. The after a double by Pudge, Gary Sheffield triples him home to put Ft. Worth up 3-2. After Ft. Worth extended their lead to two in the 6th Corktown came back to retake the lead in the 7th highlighted by a two two-run homer by Jason Giambi. Fred McGriff doubled with one out in the 8th and even made it to third base, but Ft. Worth couldn’t tie the game. In the 9th Brian Jordan robbed Jose Guillen of a game tying lead off home run, but with two outs Tony Gwynn doubled and scored the tying run off a single by Keith Lockhart. Corktown got the game winning hit when Alex Rodriguez led off the 11th with his 35th homer of the year. The Panthers started the bottom of the 11th with consecutive singles putting runners on the corners, but with the infield in A-Rod throws the runner out at the plate and then Troy Percival gets the final two outs to preserve the victory.

Final Score: Bootleggers 6, Panthers 5

Game #6: The Panthers roared ahead 8-0 after 3 innings behind a 2 RBI double by Pudge Rodriguez, a 2 run homer by White, and a three run homer by Roberto Kelly. Kevin Brown gave up 4 runs in the 4th, but was otherwise dominant striking out 8 as the Panthers hung on to take the finale.

Final Score: Panthers 8, Bootleggers 6

Baltimore Blue Crabs @ Valdosta Bombers

Series Preview: Baltimore @ Valdosta featured a couple of teams trying to get the season over with.
Game #1: Valdosta 4-3. Pat Hentgen looked like his old self, going 8 solid IP. John Franco made it interesting in the 9th, allowing 2 runs, but held on for his 8th save.
Game #2: Valdosta 5-4. Mike Stanton blew a 4-2 lead in the 9th as the Bombers rally for the walk-off victory.
Game #3: Baltimore 4-3. Down 3-0 in the 8th, the Bombers rallied to tie it up but Al Reyes (0-1) immediately gave the lead back in the 9th and Esteban Yan recorded his 27th save.
Game #4: Valdosta 8-4. Bombers struck early and often making a winner of Jamie Moyer (8-9,3.35).
Game #5: Valdosta 8-4. Bombers enjoyed a 7 run outburst in the 4th inning and cruised to the win. Shane Reynolds improved to 12-7. Mark McLemore and Paul Sorrento ran into each other on a pop fly and will both be out for about a week for the Blue Crabs.
Game #6: Baltimore 9-6. Crabs struck for 8 runs in the 1st inning and Pat Hentgen lasted just 2/3 of an inning as he drops to 3-4, 8.33.
Series Summary: Valdosta wins 4 of 6.

Long Beach Titans @ Newark Bears

Series Preview: The re-building Titans visit the first place Bears.
Game #1: All Newark in the first game as the Bears pound 5 Homers, led by Juan Gonzalez’s 36th HR.

Game #2: The Titans jump out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning, but the Bears eventually win this seesaw game in 10 innings. Rob Nen blows the save in the top of the 9th, but pitches 3 innings to secure the victory. Juan Gonzalez hits homer #37.

Game #3: Newly acquired SP Carlos Perez pitches 6 one run innings and Rafael Bournigal secures the victory with a 2 out single to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th.

Game #4: After pitching a no-hitter last week, Al Leiter continues his masterful pitching by throwing a complete game, only allowing 1 unearned run. Freddy Garcia takes care of the hitting with a HR and 4 RBIs

Game #5: Jeff Fassero throws a shutout with 8Ks and Freddy Garcia repeats his game 4 performance with another homer and 4RBIs.

Game #6: The Titans led the final game of the series 4-1 after 5 ½ innings, but in the bottom of the 6th, Jose Canseco & Kurt Abbott hit back-to-back homers to give the Bears a lead they would not relinquish. Ron Nen saves his 23rd game.

Series Summary: The Bears sweep their second consecutive series and cement their 1st place position in the NL Central. Al Leiter and Jeff Fassero lobby for pitchers of the week!
