Corktown Bootleggers @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: The first-place Bootleggers visit Castle Rock, who has been very strong at home (when are we going to turn it around on the road?). The Corktown lineup is ridiculously strong.
Game #1: Trachsel pitches a gem and the Bootleggers never trail in a 7-2 victory. Burks has three hits and three RBI for Corktown. Strong start for Corktown.

WP: Trachsel (5-2)
LP: Carpenter (7-5)

Game #2: Castle Rock jumps out to a 5-1 lead, but we can’t keep the Corktown runs off the board as the Bootleggers put together 10 runs with three homers (A-Rod, Ausmus, Burks) and take the second game by a 10-7 score.

WP: Urbina (4-1)
LP: Mulholland (3-4)
S: Roberto Hernandez (3)

Game #3: Castle Rock is reeling after getting knocked around in the first two games. Game 3 was one of the wackiest games I have ever played. The final was 14-13, Castle Rock in eleven innings. But, that doesn’t tell much of the story. The teams combined for 38 hits, including 8 home runs. The Bootleggers committed 5 errors, allowing for 8 unearned runs! Todd Pratt (!) went 5-for-5 in the game, with three doubles. It was a draining victory, but Castle Rock guts it out.

WP: Simas (1-4)
LP: Percival (3-2)

Game #4: Castle Rock jumps all over Hideki Irabu in this one, jumping out to a 5-1 lead after three innings. Kenny Rogers shuts down the Corktown offense pretty effectively and the Hounds cruise to a 6-2 victory. Irabu suffers his first loss of the season.

WP: Kenny Rogers (10-6)
LP: Hideki Irabu (9-1)

Game #5: We are now tied in the series as Castle Rock has a new lease on things. We get another wacky game here, as we head to extra innings. Placido Polanco ends up being the star for Castle Rock, as Corktown walked Bonds to pitch to him in the bottom of the 10th, and he delivered a 2-RBI walk-off single. Castle Rock takes the 3-2 series lead. Percival suffers his second loss of the series.

WP: Elarton (4-2)
LP: Percival (3-3)

Game #6: Castle Rock looking to actually win the series vs. the first place Bootleggers. Carpenter pitches an absolute gem of a game, going the full 9 innings and only allowing 1 hit and 1 run. The Hounds offense does just enough to get the victory, taking a 3-1 victory. Tatis Sr. and Polanco both delivered two hits on the day.

WP: Carpenter (8-5)
LP: Trachsel (5-3)

Series Summary: Castle Rock loses the first two but storms back to take four in a row over the first-place Bootleggers. An unexpected series win for the Hounds.

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: This Canadian battle pits NL West titans Winnipeg against the NL East possibly also-rans from Hampton.
Game #1: Justin Thompson didn’t even have a nightmare game … he had a nightmare inning … no scratch that, he had a nightmare 2/3 of an inning allowing six runs in the 1st inning and then the Huskies went to sleep but hung on to win 6-3.
Kenny Lofton (4) hit a homer and singled and drove in two runs and set the tone for a great series for him for Winnipeg. Ricky Gutierrez had one hit, but it was a doozy – a bases loaded triple in the 1st inning for Hampton.
W-Tomko (11-5)
L-Thompson (9-6)
Game #2: A mini-marathon that went 14 innings decided by a run scored in the top of the 14th on a Mark McGwire single but then avenged in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run homer by BJ Surhoff.
Fricking Kenny Lofton had three hits of course for Winnipeg, walked three times, scored three runs and stole three bases. Btw, McGwire walked five times in the game in which the Goldeyes stranded 17 guys on base (compared to 8 by Hampton).
W-Mathews (1-1)
L-Evans (0-1)
Game #3: Enough with the close games.
Lofton gets another three hits, scores two runs and drives in two for Winnipeg.
W-Schilling (12-4)
L-Guzman (5-9)
Game #4: Hampton cranks out 20 hits and trounces Winnipeg 17-5.
W-Arrojo (7-6)
L-Escobar (2-3)
Game #5: Winnipeg’s turn again as they take it 9-2 over Hampton – Lofton another two hits and two steals.
W-Benes (9-3)
L-Bradford(0-1)
Game #6: Hampton chokes with the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the 9th and scores just one run as they fall short in their comeback attempt falling 5-3 to Winnipeg as the series splits.
W-Thompson (10-6)
L-Tomko (11-6)
Sv-Nitkowski (2)
Series Summary: Split against a better team so we will happily take it.

Flossmoor Flying Squirrels @ Harper Woods Expos

Series Summary: Flossmoor wins the series 4 games to 2.

California Quakes @ Hollywood Vampires

Series Summary: Hollywood wins one.

Long Beach Titans @ Valdosta Bombers

Series Preview: Long Beach @ Valdosta. Bombers win 4 of 6 to get to a game over .500.
Game #1: Long Beach 7-1: Pat Hentgen made his season debut and it wasn’t pretty as he was rocked for 5 runs in just 3 IP.
Game #2: Valdosta 5-0: Jamie Moyer scattered 6 hits and struck out 8 while going the distance for his 7th win of the year.
Game #3: Valdosta 8-2. Tom Candiotti (12-8) tossed 7 effective innings and the offense was provided by Eric Karros, who homered twice and Manny Ramirez who added his 33rd of the season.
Game #4: Long Beach 8-6. Bombers took a 4-0 lead in the 1st but John Snyder was his usual ineffective self, allowing 5 runs in 5 2/3 IP. Bombers Eric Karros had 4 hits including his 20th HR.
Game #5: Valdosta 2-0: Bob Tewksbury was once again excellent as he moved to 4-0 and dropped his ERA to 1.73. John Franco picked up his 4th save.
Game #6: Valdosta 12-1. Pat Hentgen wasn’t too sharp again but he did garner his 1st win of the year with 6 1/3 IP. Richie Sexson was 4-4 for the Bombers and Alex Ochoa knocked in 4 runs.
Series Summary: Valdosta goes 4-2 and with John Franco‘s save he now has 262 for his career putting him 37 saves from the all-time record held by Sparky Lyle (299).

Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Newark Bears

Series Preview: Newark hosts Santa Rosa as they try to separate themselves from a 1st place tie with the Michigan Mauraders in the NL Central.
Game #1: Francisco Cordova spins a complete game shutout in game one, outpitching Santa Rosa ace John Smoltz, who also pitched well striking out 8 Bears in 6 innings.
Final score 4-0 (Bears)
Game #2: Not to be outdone by his teammate, Al Leiter also pitches a complete game shoutout, and with the identical score! Juan Gonzalez hits his 25th homer.
Final score 4-0 (Bears)
Game #3: The Bears out hit the Bums 12 to 7 but simply could not get timely hits against Grade 3 starter Steve Karsay, who has an inexplicable 2.26 ERA in 60 innings!!! He pitches 8 innings, allows 11 hits and gets the victory.
Final Score 7-4 (Bums)
Game #4: Newark roars back in game #4, Juan Gonzalez and Darryl Strawberry homer to back 7 scoreless innings from Jeff Fassero.
Final Score 7-1 (Bears)
Game #5: t looked like the Bears were headed for their 3rd shutout of the series but leading 1-0 with two outs in the 8th inning, Roberto Alomar hits a 2 run homer of Chan Ho Park to give the Bums the lead and the victory.
Final Score 2-1 (Bums)
Game #6: Things don’t look good for the Bears when in the top of the 4th innings SP Francisco Cordova gets tossed by the umpire for allegedly throwing at a batter. The Bums open a 5-2 lead after 5 innings behind ace John Smoltz. But then in the bottom of the 7th, Smoltz gets thrown out of the game for throwing at a Bears hitter, this gives the Bears a chance against a porous Bums bullpen, the Bears eventually win it in the bottom of the ninth on a Mike Piazza single. Juan Gonzalez hits two more homers!
Final Score 6-5 (Bears)
Series Summary: The Bears win the series 4-2. Juan Gonzalez makes a case for player of the week by hitting 4 Home Runs and driving in 7 runs.
