California Quakes @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Its third place California visiting 2nd place Castle Rock although they are pretty well-distanced in the standings. Castle Rock is licking its wounds after a tough series at 1st place Fort Worth, but finds itself still leading in the wild-card race. |
| Game #1: | Castle Rock jumps all over California as they plate 6 runs off of Rapp in just 2.2 IP. However, a lot of this is due to sloppy fielding by the Quakes, as 5 of the 6 runs were unearned. The final is 10-3, Castle Rock, but only 4 of the 10 runs were earned (3 errors by California). Pettitte gets a quality start and victory for Castle Rock and Bonds homers.
WP: Pettitte (7-3) |
| Game #2: | Erstad leads off the game with a HR for California, but the Castle Rock offense strikes early again, running Burba after 2.2 IP and 6 runs scored (all earned this time). There would be no scoring after the third inning as the final was 6-1, Castle Rock.
WP: Rogers (8-4) |
| Game #3: | This one is a lot closer than the previous two, but Castle Rock still comes out on top. Hounds race out to a 5-2 lead before Dreifort gives way to the bullpen. Mulholland and Benitez both give up solo HR’s to make it 5-4, but that is all California could do, as the Hounds take it 5-4 and have the 3-0 series lead.
WP: Dreifort (2-2) |
| Game #4: | The Quakes fall behind in this one, but manage to come back by scoring 3 runs off of the Hounds bullpen in the 8th inning. Oliver gets a quality start and Hoffman closes the door on a Castle Rock rally.
WP: Oliver (3-2) |
| Game #5: | Another tight one. Up 3-2 in the 8th, Bohanon comes on in relief of Hermanson and gives up a 2-run shot to Olerud, as California takes a 4-3 lead. Hoffman will come on to close it again, and the series now stands at 3-2 after back-to-back California victories.
WP: Watson (6-3) |
| Game #6: | California is feeling confident after winning the last two, although they fall behind 4-3 early in this one. But Greer puts them ahead with a HR in the 7th to make it 5-4. Hounds tie it up on a Gonzalez sac fly though and we head to the 8th tied at 5-5. Sweeney delivers a clutch 2-out RBI single in the bottom of the 8th to give the Hounds the 6-5 lead. There are two outs in the 9th when the Hounds commit back-to-back errors, allowing the Quakes to tie the game! In the bottom of the 9th, the Hounds lead off with two straight walks to Bonds and Gonzalez. But Ron Villone (a 3) comes on to get three straight outs to keep it at 6-6 and we go to extras. Sweeney finally delivers a walk-off hit for the Hounds in the 12th.
WP: Benitez (4-3) |
| Series Summary: | Castle Rock takes 4 out of 6 in a close series. |
Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Hampton Huskies |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Hampton suddenly having difficulty with everyone tries its fortunes against the Santa Rosa Beach Bums. |
| Game #1: | The Bums pound the Hampton middle relief but good with Frank Thomas laying on most of the hurt with a homer and a single to account for four runs in an easy 7-2 win for Santa Rosa. To tell you the truth it could have been much worse as the Beach Bums stranded 11 thanks to 10 walks issued in the game by Hampton pitchers led by TJ (I Don’t Even Have Control of My Bowels) Mathews who walked six in just 1-2/3 innings. Yuck. John Smoltz was pretty much in complete control throughout with his only mistake a two-run homer by Henry Rodriguez over an otherwise solid 8 innings. Smoltz struck out nine and gave up just five hits and two walks. W-Smoltz (9-3) L-Bottenfield (1-1) HR-SRB: Thomas (15), Rivera (4); HAM: Rodriguez (9) |
| Game #2: | Rolando Arrojo pretty much wasted seven shutout innings since the Huskies crushed Pedro AStacio and company in a 9-0 win. Hampton homered six times in the contest including two by Greg Vaughn who also drove in four runs and two by Brian McRae who finally showed some sign of life in his last season as a useful ballplayer. W-Arrojo (5-5) L-AStacio (2-10) HR: HAM: McRae 2 (10), Mueller (1), Vaughn 2 (27), Spiers (2) |
| Game #3: | The pendulum again swung Sanra Rosa’s way as they beat the crapola out of the bullpen in a 6-3 win over Hampton. Slap hitters Thomas Howard and Neifi Perez each drove in a pair of runs in the role of unlikely heroes. Bill Mueller had three hits to pace the losing Huskies. W-Morman (1-1) L-Graves (3-2) Sv-Crabtree (7) HR-SRB: Perez (2) |
| Game #4: | BJ Surhoff singled home Craig Counsell in the bottom of the 11th to give Hampton a 3-2 extra-inning win over Santa Rosa to even up the series. The hit was Surhoff’s third of the game but he was matched in the other dugout by Frank Thomas who had three hits of his own. W-Gordon (3-0) L-Jones (1-4) HR-none |
| Game #5: | Ugh. Frank Thomas was a perfect 1/1 with three walks with Ken Caminiti flexing his store-bought muscles with a couple of RBIs in a 6-4 win for the Bums. Scott Hatteberg had four hits for Hampton but thanks to the voyeuristic hitters around him didn’t factor a whole lot into the scoring with just one run and one RBI. W-Karsay (2-2) L-Leiter (1-3) Sv-Crabtree (11) |
| Game #6: | Hampton broke open the game with a four-run 7th inning courtesy of a Kevin Sefcik grand slam as they spoiled the series win for Santa Rosa with a 6-1 victory. W-Arrojo (6-5) L-Oquist (1-8) HR-HAM: Sefcik (1), Burnitz (12) |
| Series Summary: | Frustratingly the Huskies were unable to take advantage of several significantly lop-sided pitching matchups as Frank Thomas led the Bums to a split against the Huskies. |

| Game #6: | Roger Clemens gets the ball on 3 days’ rest and goes 7 Innings allowing only 1 Earned Run. Carlos Delgado has 3 Hits & 3 RBI’s for Chicago.

Michigan Mauraders @ Newark Bears |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Showdown between 1st Place Michigan and 2nd place Newark. |
| Game #1: | The Bears beat up Livian Hernandez to the tune of 9 runs, 11 hits, 6 BB in 5.2 innings. Cal Ripken commits 4 errors! Bear’s SP Chuck Finley also walks 6 but only allows 2 hits. Mike Piazza and Mark Grace each collect 4 hits for the Bears.
Final score 10-3 (Bears) |
| Game #2: | Just like in real baseball, you pretty much know when some games are just not going to go your way in BBW. When the Bears lost 3 players to injury on the same play in a 3rd inning collision, I pretty knew this game was over. The Bears could not touch Grade 5 SP Mike Morgan (6 shutout innings). Rafael Palmeiro hits his 22nd homer.
Final score 10-0 (Mauraders) |
| Game #3: | Mark Grace and Jose Canseco each drive in 3 runs (Canseco with his 11th homer). Francisco Cordova pitches a gem only allowing 1 run in 8 innings.
Final Score 8-2 (Bears) |
| Game #4: | Michigan storms to a 7-2 lead after 2 innings, Newark crawls back and eventually takes the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning. Newark brings in closer Rob Nen who promptly blows the lead and the game by giving up 3 runs in the top of the 9th! Rafael Palmeiro collects 4 hits, hits his 23rd homer and drives in 5 runs.Final Score 11-9 (Mauraders) |
| Game #5: | Al Leiter pitches 7 no-hit innings before settling for a complete game 2 run/4 hit victory. Juan Gonzalez hits his 20th homer and drives in 3 runs.
Final Score 5-2 (Bears) |
| Game #6: | The Bears again beat up Livian Hernandez, this time for 7 runs in 5 innings. The Mauraders actually jumped off to a 4-0 lead in the 1st inning, but the Bears eventually took the lead in the 4th inning and held on behind Rob Nen’s 20th save. Palmeiro and Castilla homered for the Mauraders – Jose Canseco hit his 4th home run of the series for the Bears.Final Score 7-6 (Bears) |
| Series Summary: | The Bears win 4 out of 6 games and take over 1st place in the National League Central. Jose Canseco makes a case for player of the week by going 7 for 16 with 4 Home Runs and 9 RBI. |

Long Beach Titans @ Blarney Drive Bandits |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Long Beach (30-45) battles The Bandits (34-41) for 6 games. |
| Game #1: | 2-1 nail-biter to start the series and Blarney wins it.
LB 1 BB 2 W – Hampton (9-3) |
| Game #2: | Barber is injured in the 2nd inning so the bull pen is called early. Rusch does his best gobbling up 5+ innings and holding the fort. The damage done early was too much as Long Beach could muster only one run again.
LB 1 BB 6 W – Wells (8-5) |
| Game #3: | Another 2-1 affair where Blarney gets the deuce. Three games in and Titans have scored a total of 3 runs, the bats have got to heat up soon, right?
LB 1 BB 2 W – Johnson (4-6) |
| Game #4: | Yoshii takes the brunt of Long Beach’s awakening. Hill 3-5 and Relaford 2-4 w/ 3 RBI lead the Titan’s to their first W.
LB 6 BB 1 W – Perez (5-9) |
| Game #5: | Teams combine for 20 hits (17 of them singles!) in a back and forth game. Blarney scored 3 in both the 6th and 7th to take control late. Justice 3-5 w/ 3 RBI HR (the only hard hit ball).
LB 5 BB 8 W – Woodard (2-3) |
| Game #6: | Tight game until the bottom of the 6th as the wheels fell off for Karl and then Mesa laid an egg to boot. Both teams hit the ball well but Blarney keyed up with men in scoring position.
LB 4 BB 11 W – Weathers (4-5) |
| Series Summary: | Bandits take 5 of 6 as Long Beach struggled to score early in the series. |
Portland Mavericks @ Fort Worth Panthers |

MGH 2/7/2 |
| Game #2: | Derek Jeter has a big day for Manhattan, going 4 for 4 with a double and 4 runs scored, and Jason Kendall added 3 hits, including a triple, and 2 runs scored and 2 RBIS. But it was Baltimore that came out on top, propelled by homeruns by Dimitri Young, Chipper Jones, and Jorge Posada.
MGH 7/12/1 |
| Game #3: | Manhattan gets in the win column behind Brian Moehler‘s 8 hit shutout. Durham and Harris homer for the Gas Hornets.
MGH 7/9/1 |
| Game #4: | Baltimore bounces back, taking game 4 with a 3 run 8th inning, fueled by Rico Brogna‘s 2 run single.

MGH 5/10/0 |
| Game #6: | It took 11 innings, but Manhattan earned the series split with a 3-2 victory.
MGH 3/6/0 |
