Blarney Drive Bandits @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The Gas Hornets are home for a spell and get to host Blarney Drive – 2nd place tie in the NL West but 6 games below .500. But they have a better team than that record. Manhattan has recently been pressed by the Hampton Huskies – but they had a tough week last week and dropped 8 games back. The Gas Hornet hope to keep or increase that differential… |
| Game #1: | LaTroy Hawkins keeps getting time on the mound and he starts off rough giving up 3 in the 1st and another in the 2nd. Ricky Henderson (3) leads off with a homer. Dean Palmer doubles in 2 in the 1st and Mike Bordick (7) homers in the 2nd making it 4-1 Blarney. But the Gas Hornets tie it up in the bottom of the 2nd with 3 of their own. The Bandits steal a run in the 4th to regain the lead 5-4 and it stayed that way until the 7th. Then Manhattan went on a rampage scoring 8 times!! Derek Jeter goes 4 for 5, 2 runs, 3 rbis. Jason Kendall and Orlando Merced drive in 2 each as Jay Johnstone (BS) and Greg Swindell (5 hits, 5 runs in 1 ip) get the bums rush. BDB 6- 9-0 LP Johnstone (1-2) BS (3) MGH 12-16-1 WP Dave Telgheder (2-0) |
| Game #2: | This one was a close one – until it wasn’t, but that was late. The Bandits get single runs in the 2nd and 3rd and 6 for a 3-0 lead. Then the Gas Hornets plate 3 in the bottom of the 6th (poor fielding aided – 3 errors for Blarney Drive). Then Mike Maddux goes 1 inning to many and he gives up the go ahead run in the 8th. But the Gas Hornets figure they are still in it with the score 4-3 Blarney Drive as the 9th begins. Matt Mantei was asked to keep it close – NOPE! He gets 1 out, gives up 2 hits, a walk and a 2 run homer to Dean Palmer (7). After the walk, he leaves and Mike Fetters comes in and gives up 2 more runs in a 4 run Bandits 9th that wins the game easily. BDB 8-18-3 WP Mike Hampton (6-2) S Rick Aguilera (1) MGH 3- 5-1 LP Maddux (1-2) |
| Game #3: | So after 2 wild and crazy (and high scoring/hitting) games we finally get a nail biter. David Wells – 7 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs and Rick Reed (7 innings, 4 hits, 1 run) are superb in keeping the game tight. Dean Palmer hits another homer (8) off Reed. Tino Martinez (15) hits one off wells – he also triples (his first of the year). The Gas Hornets score the other run on a Garret Anderson GIDP. So, it’s now up to the thin Manhattan bullpen to hold the 2-1 lead – John Wetteland had some personal business to attend to and missed this week. Ricardo Rincon is called on and he pitches 2 innings giving up but 1 hit for the save. BDB 1-5-0 LP Wells (6-3) MGH 2-5-0 WP Reed (5-1) S Rincon (2) |
| Game #4: | OK – enough of the tight games. Randy Johnson squares off against Stan Spencer and it’s Randy Johnson (and later Greg Swindell) who get the worst of it. In fact, Spencer goes 7 innings giving up next to nothing and then in the 8th he gives up a couple of hits including a Quilvio Veras rbi double. That was the only score for the Bandits. Manhattan on the other hand started with 3 in the 1st, 2 in the 5th (made it 7-0) and then 3 more in the 7th. Both Johnson and Swindell gave up 2 homers – Tino Martinez (16, 17), Derek Jeter (10) and Luis Alicea (3) were the recipients. Tino had 3 hits and 6 rbis to lead the onslaught. BDB 1- 6-1 LP Johnson (0-7) Really????? wow! MGH 10-12-0 WP Spencer (2-1) |
| Game #5: | Well we haven’t had an extra inning game – so let’s have one. And let’s make it LOOOOONG! (Yuck). Shawn Green doubles in 2 and Ryan Klesko a SF and Darrin Fletcher and rbi single get the Bandits 2 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th. But the Gas Hornets get 1 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th and finally they get a 4th run off starter Dave Weathers in the 7th to tie it up. Derek Jeter is having another big game (4 for 6 and 3 rbis). Starter Brian Moehler (4 runs) left in the 6th as his arm tightened up (out 5 days, won’t miss a start) and the Gas Hornets bullpen goes to work – excellent work (except Mantei gets tossed for pitching too tight). However, the Bandits bullpen does the excellent pitching thing as well. 4 Bandits relievers go 5 innings (7th – 11th) giving up 2 hits and nothing else. Mike Busby comes in for the 12th and continues the blank stuff for the 12th, 13th and 14th! Gas Hornets relievers pretty much do the same thing, Ricardo Rincon tosses 3 1 hit innings, Mike Fetters tosses 3 3 hit innings. 4 relievers take the Gas Hornets into the 14th before Dave Telgheder goes in. He goes 2 – 1 hit, no runs (LaTroy Hawkins is warming up!!!). Busby comes out for the bottom of the 15th (his 4th inning) Paul Bako leads off with a single, Jason Kendall in to PR (SSN 32!) Luis Alicea up, the hit and run – swing, miss, Bill Hasselman (-3) throws it down – OUT!!!! Ouch!! Then Alicea singles (of course he does). Dave Martinez lines out for the 2nd out. Ed Giovanola then gets a scratch single (his 2nd of the game – in a RARE start) and he moves Alicea to 2nd. That brings up Matt Stairs who grounds one deep into short – Mike Bordick can’t get it. Magglio Ordonez races in for it, Alicea races around 3rd and he scores standing up to end the game in the bottom of the 15th! BDB 4-12-0 LP Busby (0-1) 15 INNINGS MGH 5-14-1 WP Dave Telgheder (3-0) |
| Game #6: | Masato Yoshi and Tim Wakefield get the starting nods and both are asked to go deep into the one as the bullpens are weary. Yoshi manages to go 5.1 innings, 7 hits and 2 runs – a 2 run 5th for Manhattan. Wakefield is still pitching in the 7th – very well in fact – but in the 7th he gives up a string of hits with Brent Mayne getting an rbi double and then scoring on a Mike Bordick rbi single to tie the game. But Wakefield is not coming out – me thinks he’s been told to go all the way. He bears down and kills the Blarney Drive rally at 2 runs. Rick Aguilera comes in in the 8th and the Bandits probably wish he hadn’t. He faces 7, fans 1, walks 2, gives up 3 hits and the Gas Hornets score 2 to take 4-2 lead into the 9th. With 1 out, Dean Palmer singles but then Mayne follows by grounding into the game ending DP. BDB 2- 6-1 LP Aguilera (1-2) MGH 4-10-0 WP Wakefield (7-2) |
| Series Summary: | In summary, the Gas Hornets nabbed 5 games – 1 due to a wild huge scoring late inning, 1 in the 15th, another by a single run, 1 big blowout and 1 2 run game won in the 8th. So, for a 5-1 series win, it was actually quite close. Blarney Drive heads home to host the Newark Bears and Manhattan plays host next week to Danbury. |
