New Hampshire Nighthawks @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Both teams sit at 24-22 heading into this series. I don’t know about New Hampshire, but Castle Rock was definitely hoping to fare better heading into the year. The Hounds sit 5 back from Fort Worth in the West, while New Hampshire is already 13 games behind Corktown in the East. Castle Rock looking for a decisive series win. |
| Game #1: | Carpenter vs. Helling in a matchup of 10 vs. 11. Carpenter gets the better of this one, going 8.2 IP, allowing only two hits, combining with Mulholland for a shutout. The Hounds score all of their runs in the 4th inning, with Luis Gonzalez delivering two RBI after a Bonds triple. The final is 4-0, Caste Rock.
WP: Carpenter (5-2) |
| Game #2: | Rueter vs. Hermanson in Game 2. Bragg opens up the scoring for Castle Rock with a solo HR in the 3rd, and Tatis follows with a bases loaded 2-out 2-RBI single to make it 3-0, Hounds. Widger adds a 2-run shot (after a Bragg double) to extend to 5-0 in the 4th. Tejada hits a homer for New Hampshire to give them their first run of the series and break up the shutout. Segui and Kotsay add solo HRs in the 6th and 7th, but that appears to be the only way New Hampshire can score. Castle Rock adds a couple more and the final is 8-3, Hounds, as they take the 2-0 series lead.
WP: Hermanson (6-1) |
| Game #3: | Sele vs. Pettitte in this one. Castle Rock strikes first, with back-to-back-to-back doubles from Polanco, Tatis and Clayton to take a 2-0 lead. Bonds adds some insurance in the bottom of the 8th with a two-run homer. Meanwhile, Pettitte is cruising, allowing just two hits through 8 innings. Simas comes on to close it out for Castle Rock and the final is 4-0. Castle Rock takes the 3-0 series lead and has held New Hampshire to just three runs through three games.
WP: Pettitte (4-2) |
| Game #4: | Bohanon vs. Saunders in a lefty battle. Nighthawks explode for 6 runs in the second inning, doubling their production from the first three games in that one inning. New Hampshire added three more off of a Segui HR (3-5, 4 RBI) and Eusebio went 2/4 with a double and triple. The final is 9-3, New Hampshire.
WP: Saunders (5-3) |
| Game #5: | Kerry Wood and Kenny Rogers battle in Game 5, as Castle Rock looks to clinch the series while New Hampshire looks to make it 3-2. Bonds leads off the bottom of the 1st with a solo HR off of Wood. It stays 1-0 until the bottom of the 7th, when Joe Carter hits a 2-out grand salami to give Castle Rock the 5-0 lead. Meanwhile, Kenny Rogers is cruising along, facing only 29 batters in a CG shutout. The final is 5-0 Castle Rock.
WP: Rogers (5-3) |
| Game #6: | Rematch of Game 1, Helling vs. Carpenter. It starts very poorly for Castle Rock, as Carpenter walks the first three batters of the game. Hounds almost get out of it, but Kotsay delivers a 3-run shot with two outs and New Hampshire takes a 4-0 lead. But, Castle Rock starts chipping away, scoring 1 in the 1st, 1 in the 3rd, and then 4 in the 6th, capped by an Easley 3-run homer to make it 6-4. The final ends up being 7-4, Castle Rock.
WP: Benitez (2-3) |
| Series Summary: | Castle Rock takes the series 5-1 behind very good starting pitching (aside from our highest rated starter), and decent hitting. New Hampshire could only get the offense going in a couple of innings throughout the series. |

| Game #1: | Gas Hornets get single runs in the 2nd thru 5th innings, then Valdosta plates 4 in 5th off Tim Wakefield, 2 of the runs on a Manny Ramirez homer (17). But the Gas Hornets score 3 in the 7th to win the game 7-4. WP Wakefield (6-2) S John Wetteland (10) LP Shane Reynolds (5-2) |

Steinbach hits his 2nd homer (4) of the game in the 6th and Eric Karros knocks one out of the park in the 9th (9) off John Wetteland, but was 1 run too little as Manhattan wins 4-3. WP Rick Reed (4-1) S Wetteland (11) LP John Thompson (4-4) |
| Game #4: | Key play in the one was the Terry Steinbach homer (5) off John Wetteland in the 9th to tie the game at 3-3 and send it to free baseball land. Then in the 11th they got to Ricky Bones to win the game 4-3. WP Mike Timlin (1-2) LP Bones (2-1) BS Wetteland (2) |

WP Morris (5-1) LP Reynolds (5-3) |
| Game #6: | Series standing at 3-2 Gas Hornets it takes 14 innings to come up with a winner. Valdosta gets 2 in the 2nd and then sees Tim Wakefield ejected (mostly because the Bombers John Synder has already beaned a couple of guys). The Gas Hornets relief core then this great keeping the Bombers at 2 runs. Luis Alicea hits a solo homer (2) of Synder in the 5th and Matt Stairs double in the tying run in the 7th and then the Bombers relief core does the same number on the Gas Hornets blanking them for what seemed like eternity. Then John Wettleland for Manhattan and Stan Belinda for Valdosta took the hill in the 12th and both pitch 3 innings (on borrowed time). Wetteland had been shaky earlier in the series – but in this one he goes 3 perfect innings. Belinda gives up an rbi double to Jason Kendall in the 14th which proves to be the game winner in the 3-2 Manhattan win. WP Wetteland (2-2) LP Belinda (2-4) |
| Series Summary: | In a very close series the Gas Hornets come out on top 4-2, but it could have gone the other way just as easily. |

Final score 12-2 (Bears) |
| Game #2: | In the second game of the series Huskies starter Brett Tomko is injured for 5 days after throwing just one pitch, this will have repercussions the rest of the series as it will inevitably wear out the Huskies bullpen. Chan Ho Park pitches well for the Bears (2 runs in 6 1/3 innings) – Rob Nen pick up a 2 inning save.
Final score 4-3 (Bears) |
| Game #3: | Mike Piazza and Freddy Garcia homer for the Bears as they pound out 11 hits on their way to a 3rd series victory. The Huskies make it close with 3 runs in the top pf the 9th, but Rob Nen again saves the day.
