Michigan Mauraders @ Hampton Huskies |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | A tough return home for Hampton as they face 1st place Michigan and their bevy of insanely over-achieving offense led by Vinny Castilla who not only has been clobbering the ball all season but also somehow managed to snag a rating to be eligible to play SS despite not having played there. Cool … can I insert a SS rating for Greg Vaughn, too? |
| Game #1: | The Huskies got to Livan Hernandez early, scoring five times in 2-2/3 innings to help him off the field but then went to sleep with only Brett Tomko‘s solid start holding the Marauders at bay as Hampton won 5-1. The Marauders didn’t go down without a fight though scoring one run in the top of the 9th off reliever Rich Loiselle who loaded the bases with one out to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Mike Leiberthal who already had two hits in the game. Insert Hampton closer Tom Gordon and he got Lieberthal to pop out to 1st base and then struck out Aaron Boone to end the threat and the game. The Huskies slapped around the Michigan pitching staff for 14 hits in the game … OK well Hernandez gave up 10 of them … with Craig Counsell, BJ Surhoff each getting three hits. Mike Lieberthal responded with two hits for Michigan with Scott Brosius chipping in with an RBI single in the non-Tomko top of the 9th. Tomko – fresh off an injury – tossed 7 shutout innings for the win. W-Tomko (7-3, 4.61) L-L.Hernandez (4-2, 4.98) Sv-Gordon (13, 1.05) HR-HAM: Burnitz (11) |
| Game #2: | This game was all Hampton as they first pummelled starter Charles Nagy and then continued dishing out the beating to Carlos Castillo before finally settling in and coasting to a 13-2 victory over Michigan. BJ Surhoff had three hits for Hampton and drove in three runs. Vinny (Uber Shortstop) Castillo saw his batting average plummet to .343 with just one hit in four at bats while Rafael (I Love my Pharmacist) Palmeiro added two of his own to boost his average to .322. Thankfully the only ‘roids on our team are of the hemorrhoid variety. 🙂 W-Cooke (1-0, 3.27) L-Nagy (3-2, 3.22) Sv-none HR-MIC: Brosius (9); HAM: Surhoff (8), Hatteberg (4) |
| Game #3: | Suspect pitching on both sides turned what could have been a somewhat decent pitching matchup (Mark Gardner vs Juan Guzman) into a prize fight between two heavyweights who just kept pounding each other for nine innings. In the end, Raffy Palmeiro (3/5, 3 runs, 3 RBIs) led the Marauders to their first win in the series as they victimized Scott Aldred for four runs in the 9th in a 11-7 win. Aaron Boone also had three hits but did not factor into the Michigan scoring. BJ Surhoff stayed hot for Hampton with three hits of his own and missed hitting for the cycle by a triple. W-Gardner (7-2, 2.23 … no really – not a typo) L-Guzman (4-6,4.24 ERA … wish it was a typo) Sv-Ligtenberg (15, 4.03) HR-MIC: B.Williams (13 – hitting a cool.358), Lieberthal (4); HAM: Surhoff (9) |
| Game #4: | Another early exit by a Hampton starter going down to injury but at least Rolando Arrojo got two outs before his arm gave out. Instead, the Marauders got to face originally scheduled Game 5 starter Tim Belcher whose first pitch was golfed out of the park by my new favorite player – Raffy Palmeiro. Aaron Boone‘s single with two on the next inning drove in another run to give Michigan a 2-0 lead. Brian McRae‘s first hit in about a month was a timely one though for Hampton as he allowed Scott Hatteberg to saunter home after bashing one into the right field stands to tie it 2-2 after 4. Palmeiro was at it again in the 7th and hit one to the wall that allowed Brady Anderson to score easily from third base and give the visitors the 3-2 lead. Michigan starter Brad Radke had been pretty solid going into the 7th but ran into some problems after trying too hard to pinpoint spots around the plate. Radke walked McRae and gave up a single to Bill Spiers and then with one out loaded the bases with another walk to Bill Mueller. Radke fanned Craig Counsell but was not so lucky with SJ Surhoff who lined one over 2nd base bringing in two runs to make it 4-3 for Hampton. With a depleted pen, Tom Gordon closed out the game for the last two innings and preserve the 4-3 win for Hampton. W-Aldred (4-1, 3.81) L-Radke (2-3. 4.68) Sv-Gordon (14, 0.98) HR-MIC: Palmeiro (19); HAM: McRae (7) |
| Game #5: | Sweet revenge for the Marauders as the Vinny Castilla show rolled into town as he and Jim Edmonds (who really was one of my favorite players back then) each drove in a couple of runs in a 4-3 win for Michigan. Michigan counted 2 in the first inning (Castilla homer) and then two more in the 6th (Edmonds near homer high off the right field wall) and looked to be in complete control with defective defector Oswaldo Hernandez (a sleek Grade 17) stifling the Hampton offense. Hernandez finally showed signs of being human in the 7th and gave up a couple of walks that set the stage for BJ Surhoff’s second double of the game that brought in two runs to make it 4-2. Dan Plesac took over for Hernandez and gave up a long ball to Greg Vaughn (did he do ‘roids?) who hit a line drive over the left field wall but sadly with no one aboard to make it 4-3. That was as close as the Marauders would let Hampton get though despite a wobbly performance in the 9th by Kerry Ligtenberg who walked two batters but was able to strike out Jeromy Burnitz to end it and strand runners at 2nd and 3rd. Sigh. W-O.Hernandez (3-4, 3.94) L-Tomko (7-4,4.66) Sv-Ligtenberg (16, 3.90) Hr-MIC: Castilla (26); Vaughn (20) |
| Game #6: | Bernie Williams smacked a grand slam off Tom Gordon in the top of the 8th to give Michigan a split in the series with a 7-4 win. Williams punished Gordon who came into the game with a big pile of shit on his doorstep courtesy of Rich Loiselle who loaded things up. The homer was Williams’ second hit of the game with the other being a single off starter Juan Guzman in the first inning. W-Telford (5-0, 3.63) L-Loiselle (1-2, 5.52) Sv-Ligtenberg (17, 3.77) HR-MIC: Williams (14); HAM: Vaughn (21) |
| Series Summary: | A series split against a team with a deadly offense is not to bad so we will take it. |
Harper Woods Expos @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Should be an evenly matched series as Harper Woods (30-28) enters Castle Rock (31-27) with both teams sitting 2nd in their divisions and eyeing potential wildcard dreams. |
| Game #1: | It’s a slugfest between the Expos and Hounds, with Castle Rock coming out on top. Erickson gets hit pretty hard for Harper Woods, giving up 8 ER in 4.1 IP. Luis Gonzalez and Chris Widger go deep for Castle Rock, who win 8-6.
WP: Carpenter (6-2) |
| Game #2: | This is a tight one as Hermanson and Mussina, both 13’s, battle it out. Both leave in the 8th inning. Unfortunately for Mussina, the Harper Woods bullpen implodes, letting one inherited runner and three more score before the end of the 8th. Castle Rock scores 4 runs with two out in the 8th to take the 6-2 lead. Benitez closes it down for Castle Rock in the 9th.
WP: Mulholland (3-1) |
| Game #3: | The Hounds bats continue to howl, as they knock Washburn out after just 2.2 IP with 7 runs (6 earned). The Hounds pitchers do enough to win the game, as Castle Rock takes it 8-4 and has a 3-0 series lead.
WP: Pettitte (5-3) |
| Game #4: | Castle Rock jumps out to an early 4-0 lead with homers from Bonds, Shane Mack and Joe Carter. Meanwhile, Kenny Rogers is pitching very well for Castle Rock, as he goes 7.1, only allowing 1 ER on 7 hits and 0 walks. The Hounds pen does the rest, and Castle Rock takes the 4-0 series lead.
WP: Rogers (6-3) |
| Game #5: | Bonds hits his second leadoff HR in a row to stake Castle Rock out to a 1-0 lead. Helton responds with a solo shot of his own in the 2nd to make it 1-1. Helton delivers an RBI single in the 3rd as well. It’s a tight one, as Joe Carter gets one back for Castle Rock and it stands at 3-2 going into the 7th. But, fielding does in Harper Woods as they commit two errors, allowing Castle Rock to take the 4-3 lead. Quantrill, Mulholland and Simas shut down Harper Woods for the final two innings and the final is 4-3, Castle Rock as they take a 5-0 series lead.
WP: Dreifort (1-0) |
| Game #6: | Harper Woods jumps out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run single from Helton. Castle Rock loads the bases with nobody out in the 6th, but Snow lines out and Clayton hits into a DP to end the threat and to keep the score 3-0. Castle Rock loads the bases again in the 7th, this time with two outs. Wright gets Luis Gonzalez to fly out to end the chance. Jamey Wright has a crazy game, where he WALKS 8 guys, gives up 3 hits and hits a batter, but manages not to give up any runs in 7.1 IP. Harper Woods adds an insurance run in the 8th and they hold on for the 4-0 victory to avoid the series sweep.
WP: Wright (4-6) |
| Series Summary: | Castle Rock comes on very strong and takes 5 out of 6 from Harper Woods in convincing fashion. |

| Game #2: | Behind an 8 run 7th inning the Titans even the series at a game apiece. Glenallen Hill and Brad Fulmer homer and knock in 3 each for Long Beach. Paul Sorrento went 3 for 3 for Baltimore.
LBT 14-13-0 |
| Game #3: | Titans plate 8 in an inning for the second consecutive game to cruise to a 10-4 victory. David Justice had 2 hits and 3 RBIs and Andy Fox had 3 hits for Long Beach. Ryan Dempster‘s ERA has now ballooned to 17.51.
LBT 10-14-0 |
| Game #4: | For the 3rd game in a row an 8 spot is put up in an inning, this time it’s the Blue Crabs turn. Baltimore capitalizes on 12 Titan walks to even the series. Hershiser helps himself, knocking in 2 of the Crab runs.
LBT 5-9-1 |
| Game #5: | Sloppy defense (6 errors) contributes to 7 unearned Titans runs as Long Beach takes game 5 9-2. Relaford and Boggs each had 2 hits for Long Beach. Chris Peters tosses 8 strong innings for the Titans, limiting Baltimore to a pair of unearned runs and 3 hits.
LBT 9-7-1 |
| Game #6: | Woody Williams and 3 Baltimore relievers combine on a 2 hit shutout. Tony Batista had 2 hits, including his 10th homerun, and 2 RBIs to lead the Crabs offense. Yan saves his 16th.
LBT 0-2-2 |
| Series Summary: | Titans and Blue Crabs split the 6 game series. |
