DeWitt Tigers @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The 3-13 Dewitt Tigers visit the 11-5 Castle Rock Hounds. The Hounds are looking to scoop up a few wins to keep pace with Fort Worth in the AL West. |
| Game #1: | Andruw Jones supplies all of the offense that Dewitt needs by corking a solo HR in the 2nd and a two-run shot in the 8th. Castle Rock can only manage one run off of Loaiza, as Dewitt takes the series opener, 3-1.
WP: Loaiza (1-1) |
| Game #2: | The Hounds do just enough to win Game 2. They jump out to an early 5-0 lead, and Dewitt manages to pull within 5-4, but can’t tie it up. Bonds hits a 2-run HR for Castle Rock.
WP: Hermanson (3-0) |
| Game #3: | The Dewitt bats are really coming alive in this series, as they deliver 16 hits and 7 runs in the game. But, Castle Rock is just as good, providing 8 runs on 14 hits, including a walk-off single from Sheets in the bottom of the 9th to seal the victory. Vina and Jones both had 4 hits for Dewitt, while Easley chipped in 3 for Castle Rock.
WP: Benitez (1-0) |
| Game #4: | Another back and forth affair that sees Castle Rock come out on top. Dewitt had the early 4-0 lead, but Castle Rock kept chipping away and Bragg delivered a go-ahead double in the bottom of the 8th to give the Hounds the 6-5 lead and the victory. Bonds and Easley went yard for Castle Rock.
WP: Elarton (2-1) |
| Game #5: | Another tight one that sees Castle Rock come out on top. Sloppy defense by Dewitt leads to 5 unearned runs. Tatis and Luis Gonzalez homer for Castle Rock, while Sosa and King do the same for Dewitt. In the end, Dewitt could not overcome an early 6-0 hole.
WP: Rogers (2-1) |
| Game #6: | BBW fatigue kicked in this game, as both Castle Rock and Dewitt had guys go to Tired, Bushed and Whipped. It was so bad that Dewitt was short a position player, so a P had to DH. The game was never in doubt, as Castle Rock raced out to a 4-0 lead and Carpenter was cruising on his way to a complete game 3-hitter. The final was 4-1, Castle Rock.
WP: Carpenter (3-1) |
| Series Summary: | Castle Rock takes the series 5 games to 1. It was a lot closer than that outcome would show. This Dewitt offense is ridiculous and they are much better than their record would suggest. |

Chicago Demolition @ Fort Worth Panthers |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Home opening series for Ft. Worth!
The Panther’s come into this series in 1st place, but only 1 game in front of the Castle Rock Hounds in the AL West. On the league leader boards they’re first in batting average at .298, second best in homers with 26, second in runs, second best in slugging, 3rd in on base percentage, and second in ERA at 3.34. Chicago comes to town in 2nd place in the AL Central 1 game behind Harper Wood Expos. The Demolition enter this series 4th in batting average at .281, 4th in home runs with 18, 4th in runs scored, leading in steals with 26, second best in on base percentage, and 4th in ERA at 3.85. |
| Game #1: | Back to back homers with out in the top of the first by Keith Lockhart and Ivan Rodriguez gave the Panthers a quick 2-0 lead. Chicago has a little two out magic in the 3rd. They got two runs off back to back doubles by Carlos Delgado and Eric Davis to tie the game then go in front on a single by Tony Clark. Delgado leads of the 5th with his 5th homer of the year expanding the Demolition lead to 4 to 2. The next inning Shannon Stewart came up with two outs and two runners on, “BROWN with the offering … it’s a shot to left center … base hit … GWYNN is racing over he cuts it off deep in the gap … GREENE is well around third … JOHNSON is rounding second … they’re waving GREENE in … here comes the throw home … here’s the play at the plate … and he’s … in standing. So the single drives in one … and CHICAGO increases its lead … this ballgame now 5-2” The Panthers come right back in the bottom of the 6th with a RBI double by Lockhart, a fielder’s choice off the bat of Pudge, and a sac fly by Fred McGriff. With a lefty on the mound for Chicago Rich Aurilia came in to pinch hit, “RHODES into his motion … delivers … AURILIA swings … and mashes it … it might go all the way … STEWART is at the warning track … but he’d need a ladder to get to this one … a four-bagger for AURILIA … Rich ties the game! … Rich trots around the bases he loves a trip downtown. So they collect a big solo homer … his 1st home run of the season and the PANTHERS have tied this game! … and AURILIA now has 6 runs batted in on the season and that’s the 3rd homer for the PANTHERS in this game.” The Panthers got the winning run in the 8th off a pinch hit single by Gary Sheffield followed by a pinch hit double by Lou Merloni, “SHEFFIELD with a substantial lead … there goes SHEFFIELD it’s roped hard to right … into the corner … McDONALD’s after it … SHEFFIELD’s digging he’s around third … coming down the line … he’ll score … PANTHERS lead!”
Final score: Panthers 6, Demolition 5 |
| Game #2: | Ft. Worth breaks open a close game beginning in the 6th with a RBI single by Doug Glanville. Then in the 7th Fred McGriff, who had a 4 RBI game, singled home two runs and later scores on a double by Gary Sheffield. Starter Jose Lima barely broke a sweat and the Panthers coasted to a game 2 victory.
Final score: Panthers 7, Demolition 1 |
| Game #3: | This game was an offensive showcase for both clubs. In the bottom of the first 3 consecutive singles produced 1 run followed by a sac fly by Ivan Rodriguez. The Panthers got their 3rd run of the opening frame on a bases loaded walk. Keith Lockhart hit his 2nd homer of the year in the 2nd and Ft. Worth appeared to be in control leading 4-0. After getting 1 run on a two out error in the 4th Eric Davis came up in the 5th for Chicago with two outs and two runners on, “The runners take their lead … here comes the pitch … and DAVIS connects … and how it’s far over the wall in left … BERGMAN wishes he had that pitch back … Eric DAVIS will circle the bases … and he’s sure taking his time … he’s greeted at home plate congratulations all around. So Eric DAVIS supplies three big runs on the two-out homer … his 5th home run to tie the game at 4-4” Ft Worth would again go in front by 4 runs on a 6th inning double by Lou Merloni and a three run pinch hit home run blast by Rich Aurilia in the 7th, but Chicago wasn’t done either. First Carlos Delgado doubled home two runs in the 8th then Mike Jackson couldn’t get the final out in the 9th. Willie Green doubles home one run then scores the tying run off a single by Jesse Levis. The Panthers would win the game in the 10th on a sac fly by Edgar Martinez.
Final score: Panthers 9, Demolition 8 |
| Game #4: | After Ft. Worth ties the game in the first on a single by Keith Lockhart the Demolition exploded ahead with a 5 run 2nd inning off two long balls. A three run jimmy jack by Charles Johnson and a two run blast by Carlos Delgado. The Panthers kept pecking away at the lead but couldn’t make it all the way back as Billy Wagner gets his 3rd save of the year. Ivan Rodriguez extends his hitting streak to 11 games by going 4 for 5 a day after he went 4 for 4.
Final score: Demolition 7, Panthers 6 |
| Game #5: | Somehow Hideo Nomo outpitches Pedro Martinez and the Panther hitters dominate again. Nomo had a complete game 6 hit shutout striking out 9 while the offense had 13 hits including Pudge Rodriguez extending his hitting streak to 12 games.
Final score: Panthers 9, Demolition 0 |
| Game #6: | The series concludes with a pitching duel between Roger Clemens for Chicago and Kevin Brown for Ft. Worth. Clemens was nearly perfect as he only allowed a single walk and a solo home run to Tony Gwynn. Brown excelled too allowing only 6 hits in 7 innings plus, but the Demoliton were also able to score two runs off him – more than enough for Clemens today.
Final score: Demolition 2, Panthers 1 |
| Series Summary: | The Panthers win 4 of 6 against Chicago. |
Baltimore Blue Crabs @ Newark Bears |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The Newark Bears look to continue their early season winning ways against the Baltimore Blue Crabs. |
| Game #1: | The first half of the game was close (2-2 after 4 ½ innings) – but the Bears broke it open with 7 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning and 3 more runs in the 8th inning on their way to an easy victory.
Final score 13-2 (Bears) Player Of The Game – Tony Fernandez (2-3/1HR 3R – 2RBI – 2BB) |
| Game #2: | Newark SP Jeff Fassero (GR 10) was awful (5 runs 5 hits 2 walks in 2.2 innings) – his counterpart Shawn Estes (GR 5) was not great, but definitely better than Fassero, giving up 4 runs in 6 innings while striking out 9 batters. Estes “good enough” performance coupled with two home runs from Chipper Jones was enough to defeat the Bears in game 2 of the series.
Final score 7-4 (Blue Crabs) Player Of The Game – Chipper Jones (2-4/2 HR-2R-3RBI-1BB) |
| Game #3: | Baltimore only got 5 hits in game #3, but since Tim Worrell (GR 5 – 6.86 ERA) only allowed 2 runs in 7 innings, that was enough to carry the Blue Crabs to victory.
Final Score – 3-2 (Blue Crabs) Player Of The Game – Tim Worrell (7 innings, 2 runs, 6 hits, 3 BB, 5k’s) |
| Game #4: | In game #4 Baltimore jumped out to a 5-0 lead after 3 ½ innings, but the Bears roared back against Orel Hershisher and a porous bullpen, scoring 8 unanswered runs in the next three innings, highlighted by a pinch hit Darryl Strawberry 3 run homer in the bottom of the 6th inning. Ron Nen ends the game with his 5th save.
Final Score – 8-6 (Bears) Player Of The Game – Jose Canseco (3-4/ two Doubles-1R-3RBI) |
| Game #5: | This one was a beauty, Al Leiter (GR 19) and Woody Williams (GR 9) hook up in a pitchers duel (Leiter 8 scoreless innings, Williams 7 scoreless innings) – the game is scoreless through 9 innings, in the top of the 10th, a Sean Casey pinch hit double and an error by Tony Fernandez give the Blue Crabs the lead against Nen. Mark Grace then hits a 2 out single to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th. Then in the bottom of the 11th, Darryl Strawberry steals second with 2 outs and pinch hitter Freddy Garcia drives him in for the win!
Final Score – 2-1 (Bears) Player Of The Game – Al Leiter – 8 innings, 3 hits, 3 walks, 5 k’s |
| Game #6: | This appeared to be a slugfest from the start as Baltimore scored 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, followed by 4 runs from the Bears in the bottom of the 1st, but then the bats went cold. Baltimore tied it in the bottom of the 6th inning, but then Freddy Garcia homered in the bottom of the 7th to regain the lead, then Ron Nen secured the victory with his 6th save.
Final Score – 5-4 (Bears) Player Of The Game – Freddy Garcia (2-2/1HR, 1 double, 2 BB, 2R, 2RBI) |
| Series Summary: | The Bears with 4 of the 6 games, all but one of the games were close. |
