| Game #1: | Hampton’s BJ Surhoff and Greg Vaughn went back to back off Jon Lieber in the 4th inning that gave the Huskies the breathing room they needed and they went on to win 7-2 over Stockton. Lieber came into the game having allowed only two home runs to date but the Huskies hitters were dialled in on his fastball in this game. Jeromy Burnitz clubbed a homer off Lieber with one out in the 5th to put an end to Lieber’s day. Jason Varitek had two singles for the Wings but did not factor in either of the two Stockton runs. | Game #2: | Juan Acevedo was brilliant and tossed a one-hitter as the Wings bounced back with a 4-0 blanking of the Hampton Huskies. Acevedo was not overpowering as he fanned just four while walking three, but never really had much trouble with the Huskies’ hitters with BJ Surhoff’s single in the 6th being the only hit they would get. | Game #3: | Carl Pavano continued to overachieve and tossed seven innings of one-run ball as both offenses stalled out but the Huskies prevailed 2-1. Extrabase hits were hard to come by once again for these teams as BJ Surhoff was the only one to get one – a double in the 4th off Jose Jimenez – and he wound up scoring the game’s first run. Stockton got its’ lone run off a pinch hit RBI single by Karim Garcia in the 6th inning that tied the game 1-1. | Game #4: | Juan Guzman‘s wildness kept the Wings’ hitters off-balance as he noisily struck out nine over seven innings in a 4-2 win for Hampton. Henry Rodriguez homered with one on in the 4th in a rare start in the outfield for Hampton to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead and the home team would add another in the inning on a triple by Craig Counsell. Vlad Guerrero’s single in the 5th cut the lead to 3-1 but the Huskies re-established the 3-run cushion with a run on an RBI single by SJ Surhoff in the 7th. Tom Gordon was a little shaky in the 9th inning save situation and gave up a homer to powerhouse Marlon Anderson but managed to get ahold of himself and got the next two outs to preserve the win. The Wings outhit the Huskies 9-4 in the game, but were victimized by their own pitchers whose lack of control led to six walks (only one of which scored however). | Game #5: | Seven walks in the 7th inning issued by Stockton pitchers – four of them with the bases loaded – led to 10 runs in a 15-4 blowout by Hampton. Stockton starter Jason Schmidt entered the 7th inning with his team up 3-2 but started out by walking Brian McRae and Ricky Gutierrez around a pop out by Scott Hatteberg. Henry Rodriguez put an end to Schmidt’s day with a three-run blast to dead centre field to make it 5-3 for Hampton and then the bullpen “took over”. Julian Tavarez came in for Schmidt and lasted just two batters – singles to Eric Young and Bill Mueller – before giving way to Trevor (Wild Walker) Wilson. Wilson gave up just one hit but he walked six so with four of them coming with the bases loaded. He mercifully was pulled after getting one out. Ron Croushore was next and he wound up finishing the game for Stockton but not before allowing three runs of his own with three walks again. | Game #6: | Greg Vaughn smashed a two-run shot off Jon Lieber in the 1st inning and the Huskies never looked back as they went on to beat the Wings 8-2. Vladimir Guerrero drove in both Wings’ runs with two singles while catcher Eddie Perez singled and doubled to provide the bulk of the Stockton offense against Hampton’s Brett Tomko on the day. Bill Mueller led all hitters with four singles in the game but never managed to find his way all the way around the bases nor did he drive in anyone. Useless. Bums lead off their game with back-to-back doubles by Sanders and Alomar. Thomas then dribbled one through the middle for a second run. Caminiti followed with another double sending Thomas to third who scored on a 2-out wild pitch. Bums 3-0 in the 1st. Hatters Bell answered to lead off the next inning with a solo shot. Bums Hammond lead off the 2nd with a single, Sanders doubled and Alomar followed with a 3-run shot, 6-1 goodbye Alvarez. Griffey followed a couple batters later with his second of the day. After a couple of singles by Alou and Bell, Dunwoody joined the home run derby with a 3-run shot, Hatters 7-0 in the 2nd. | Game #4: | To keep the momentum going the Hatters call on Darwin (0-2) to face Bums Rosado (2-1). After some complicated happenings the Bums had runners on first and second in the 1st and Sanders went yard, 3-0. Thomas added a 2-run shot in the 2nd, 5-0. In the 3rd Hatters Sullivan doubled, Biggio and DiSarcina singled for a run. After Thome walked to fill the bases Alou singled for another run. Bell followed with a single, 5-3 Bums. Hernandez grounded into a double play to end the threat. In the 5th Hatters Griffey had a lead off double and Thome singled him home, 5-4 Bums. Bell doubled and Hernandez walked to fill the bases with 1-out. Cedeno popped to the catcher and pinch hitter Stanley slaps one through the infield for two more chasing Rosado. Reliever Jones gave up a 3-run dinger to Dunwoody, Hatters 9-5. Griffey adds yet another insurance run with a solo shot in the 6th. | Game #5: | Hatters have the momentum now and send Jones (1-2) to face Bums Vazquez (0-4). But he’s due. In the 1st Bums Alomar singled, stole and scored on a Caminiti 2-out single. In the 3rd Loretta walked, Alomar singled and Caminiti delivered again with a single. In the 4th Hatters Thome walked, Alou singled and Disarcina banged an RBI single. In the 5th Cedeno singled and Griffey went yard Hatters 3-2. Bums Magnante replaces Vazquez with 2-out and runners on first and second in the 7th. He delivers just like Jones servind up a 3-run homer to Thome, Hatters 6-2. Alomar got the Bums back in the game with a lead off homer in the 8th, but time was running out. Thomas and Caminiti followed with doubles, 6-4 Hatters. But that seems to be all the offense the Bums have, Alomar, Thomas, Caminiti. Holdovers. Where are the new guys we’ve been promised. | Game #6: | Hatter go back to Alvarez (1-3) for series finale and the Bums call on Oquist (0-3) in an attempt to save face. Oquist walked the first two batters he faced and allowed Griffey to single in the 1st to fill the bases with no outs. Blowers lifted a fly to right for one. And Dunwoody singled for a couple more. Alvarez filled the bases in the 1st and stuck out Stinnett and popped Perez. In the 3rd Biggio singled, Desarcina doubled and Griffey singled home one. In the bottom half Loretta double, Thomas singled and Loretta scored on a wild pitch, 4-1 Hatters. Hatters Disarcina and Griffey singled to start the 7th and Disarcina scored on a fielders choice. John Valentine gets a single and a SF and 3 rbis. For the good guys Derek Jeter and Paul Bako get 2 rbis, and late sub Jason Kendall gets a 2 run homer (4). And it was timely. Winnipeg gets 2 in the 1st, Manhattan responds by scoring 5 through the 4th. Then the Goldeyes put up 3 in the 5th and 4 in the 7th for a 9-5 lead. But the Gas Hornets don’t roll over – 3 in the 7th and then the 2 run Kendall homer in the 8th sets up John Wetteland for the save. Down 2-1 in the bottom of the 5th, Manhattan awakes and scores 3 times keyed by a Paul Bako 2 run single. Ray Durham (6) and Tino Martinez (7) chipped in solo homers in the game and the Gas Hornets get back to winning, 5-2. | Game #6: | Series outcome in the balance, this one goes 10 innings and features John Wetteland‘s first blown save as he gives up a 9th inning homer to Kenny Loften (3) which ties the game 2-2. John Valentin got things going with an rbi double in the 4th. Sterling Hitchcock (5 ip, 1 run) and Andy Benes (7 ip, 4 hits, 2 runs) were stellar. Jason Kendall singles in 1 and drives in another with a SF in the 6th and 8th innings. Then in the bottom of the 10th with 2 on and 1st base open, Jeter is given the IW so Jeff Shaw can face Kendall.
