| Series Preview: | Arguably the best team in the National League (the Blarney Drive Bandits) heads to the Canadian east to face arguably one of the National League’s worst teams in the Hampton Huskies who are nothing if not a big disappointment. |
| Game #1: | The Bandits knock the stuffing out of Doug Drabek who had been pitching way over his head all season scoring eight runs in the first two innings en route to an 8-5 win over Hampton. The score was much closer than the actual game was as Hampton couldn’t do anything against Grade 3 Phenom David Weathers (1-3) who tossed six shutout innings, but smacked around middle relievers Lee Smith and Felipe Lira for five runs late in the game. Impending free agent Drabek (3-6) could only manage to get four outs and was credited with allowing all of the Blarney Drive runs highlighted by Shawn Green‘s three-run blast in the 1st inning – his 15th of the year FYI. Jerome Walton had three hits in five at bats for the Bandits with a couple of runs scored and two driven in. Mike Greenwell also drove in a pair with a single in the Bandits’ five-run free-for-all in the 2nd inning against Drabek. Dave Hollins (7) hit a fairly meaningless homer off Lira in the 7th to get Hampton on the board but that was about the only reason to cheer for the home team in this one. Kevin Wickander wound up getting his 5th save of the year by getting the final out after Lee Smith ran out of steam with a couple of runners aboard and the tying run at the plate. |
| Game #2: | Orel Hershiser dominated the Bandits (without the use of whips and only a bit of leather) allowing just two hits over eight strong innings in a 6-2 Hampton win. Hershiser (15-5) outduelled Mike Williams (4-3) who gave up five runs on eight hits in just 4-1/3 disappointing innings. Hershiser’s only blemish on the day was giving up Eddie Murray‘s 18th homer of the season in the 4th inning. Murray later played a key role in a Bandits’ late-inning comeback attempt as he drove in a run in the 9th and was one of three guys on base when Huskies’ reliever Jason Christensen faltered and had to be bailed out with one out to go by Doug Bochtler (save #2) who got Mike Greenwell to fly out harmlessly to left field. Jim Eisenreich (9) and Mickey Tettleton (22) hit very different homers for Hampton with Eisenreich being a line drive laser that cleared the right field wall by five feet but stayed the same height all the way while Tett’s was a monstrous flyball that looked like it would never come down. Eisenreich also singles and doubled on the day and drove in three runs. |
| Game #3: | The Huskies were the unfortunate victims of likely Mike Birbeck’s final start of the season as the four-start wizkid gave up just two hits over eight innings in a 3-1 Blarney Drive win. The Bandits got all three of their runs in the first inning off starter Arthur Rhodes who was making his first start in what seemed like a decade. To say Rhodes was rusty would be like saying Gal Gadot is kinda pretty. Rhodes was lucky to have allowed just three runs since he gave up six hits and two walks in just two innings of being on the mound. Rich Delucia and Company did a great job in relief to keep the Bandits from doing much else but unfortunately they couldn’t also hit for the hapless Huskies’ batters. Mike Stanley (7) accounted for the Hampton only run with a shot to left field off Birbeck in the 5th. Herbert Perry (3) accounted for all three Blarney Drive runs with a three-run shot of Rhodes in the 1st inning. |
| Game #4: | The Hampton Huskies scored five times in the final two innings to dig their way out of a 5-1 hole and top the Bandits 6-5 to even up the series. Mike Stanley (8) and Mickey Tettleton (23) led the comeback with homers off Blarney Drive starter Erik Hanson who actually pitched pretty well in his seven innings. The former Seattle star gave up three runs on six hits and walked just one while whiffing three. The surprise ending didn’t come without its cost though as speedy 2nd baseman Eric Young was nailed in the buttcheeks by Ricky Bottalico in the 8th and was knocked out of action with rectal lacerations for about eight days (ouch!!). Ironically, Young’s pinchrunner (Al Martin) wound up scoring the winning run. Lou Whitaker led off the game with his 18th homer of the season off Tom Gordon who continued to struggle. He was lucky to get a no-decision after allowing five runs in just six innings. Mike Greenwell and Shawn Green each drove in a pair of runs for the Bandits in a losing effort with four of their five runs being of the unearned variety thanks to lousy fielding by Young and shortstop Chris Gomez. BJ Surhoff had two RBIs for Hampton. |
| Game #5: | Bobby Jones Jekyll-Hyde season continued with the good guy showing up for this one as the Mets’ righty tossed eight shutout innings in a 2-0 win to give Hampton the surprise series win. The only scoring in the game came off Brian McRae‘s 5th homer of the year as the first batter of the game for Hampton. Almost as awesome, Jose Oquendo hit a sac fly in the 2nd inning to score Jose HErnandez for the game’s only other run. Jones (9-9) walked and struck out three in the game which was an unexpected out-duelling of David Wells (13-5) … a guy I could not stand in real life … who actually pitched pretty well with eight hits and one walk allowed in seven innings. Paul Assenmacher (8) got a 3-up 3-down 9th for the save. |

If there was some pitching the game would have looked like a blowout, but Cincinnati scores 4 in the 9th to make it an 11-8 final. Game features 5 homers. Chipper Jones (19) and Bobby Bonilla (12 – an 4 rbis) for the Outlaws. Ray Durham (3), Mike Devereaux (6) and Tino Martinez (27) for Manhattan. Rheal Cormier starts and takes the loss (3-4), Glenn Dishman gets the win for the Gas Hornets (3-5). |
| Game #2: | Game was tied 2-2 after 7, but the Outlaws jump ahead 4-3 in the 8th and then score 4 more in the 9th to run away with a 13-3 win. Jeff Branson cracks a 3 run homer in the 9th and Paul Sorrento slams 2 homers (16) – both solo shots. The 2nd solo shot was right after Branson’s in the 4 run 9th. Alejandro Pena (2-0) gets the win, Randy Veres nails the save (2). Bob Patterson is the loser (2-2). Game also featured 6 stolen bases and 3 caught stealings! |
| Game #3: | Manhattan has this game in hand, 4-1 going in to the 9th. However, Bob Patterson (BS 4) gives up a 3 run homer to Mark Whiten (7) in the 9th sending the game into free baseball land. Chris Haney then gives a homer in the 10th to Juan Gonzalez (13), but the Gas Hornets get it right back in the bottom half. So we move to the 12th the Outlaws pull up their bandanas and steal the game with the winning run. Final 6-5. Winner – Rene Arocha (2-0) – he goes 2 in scoreless relief. Mike Butcher was the victim of the loss (2-4). |
| Game #4: | Well if the Gas Hornets are going to spoil things, they better get going – and they did. Teams match 2 runs in the 2nd but Manhattan gets 3 in the 4th. Mike Devereaux goes 3 for 4 with 2 runs, 4 rbis, double and homer (8). But Cincinnati doesn’t lay down and roll over, they score single runs in the 5th and 6th to close it to 5-4. Manhattan gets 1 in the 6th to open back a 2 run lead, but the Outlaws reply with 1 of their own in the 7th, but Gas Hornets plate 2 in the 8th to seal the deal – well actually they give the ball to Jason Grimsley in the 9th and he seals the deal (S 1). Kent Mercker takes the loss (6-9), Shawn Boskie continues to surprise, getting his 10th win (10-8). |
| Game #5: | Finale and the series is tied 2-2. Let’s have another slugfest – and we do, 15 runs, 22 hits. 4 homers. And the final winning run comes in the 9th as Manhattan wins 8-7. Big guns for Cincinnati – Eddie Williams, 2 for 4, 2 homers (12, 13) and 4 rbis. Juan Gonzalez – 2 hits, homer (14) and 2 rbis. Garrett Anderson hits a ph solo homer (9) and Tino Martinez has a BIG game – 3 for 4, 5 rbis, double and homer (28) as he bids for another player of the week award. Randy Veres takes the loss (1-2) and Chris Haney gets the win (1-3). |
