Frank Thomas homered as part of the mix (14) as did Scott Livingstone (3). But in the 12th, Luis Polonia leads off with a double, moves to 3rd on a SAC and scores when Dave Martinez grounds one past the drawn in infield. | Game #2: | Santa Rosa regroups in a big way as they rap out 17 hits enroute to a 14-3 drubbing of the Gas Hornets. Sexy Rex Hudler gets 3 singles and a double and every starter gets at least 1 hit. Mike Busch comes in to PR for Frank Thomas and later hits a 3 run homer (1). Jon Nunnally goes 2 for 5 with 2 rbis, 3 runs and a homer (7). John Smoltz is as good as ever going 7 giving up 3 runs. Reason Thomas needed PR – HBP but injured just for game. Mike Macfarlane (Spanky) goes down for 5 days with a HBP. Guess when you score a lot, you get hit a lot – right? | Game #3: | Game 3 sees Bums build a 6-2 lead after 7 which included a 2 run homer by Tony Pena (4). But the Gas Hornets go nuts in the 8th and score 5 TIMES to take the lead 7-6. They call on Hipolito Pichardo to save the game in the 9th. Frank Thomas singles to start the inning. Reggie Sanders walks. Ken Caminit grounds into FC, PR Howard Battle moves to 3rd. Rex Hudler up, hits a 2 run double. Pena follows with a single scoring Sexy Rexy and it’s 9-7 Bums. Rick Aguilera comes in for the save, makes it interesting with 2 walks, but gets the job done. | Game #4: | This time, Hipolito Pichardo is called on to pitch in the 9th, Gas Hornets up 3-2, runner on and he gets the final two outs to preserve the win. Manhattan never surrendered the lead, getting runs in the 2nd, 3rd and then 7th. Tino Martinez drives in 2 with a solo homer (25) and single (he had 3 hits). Ken Caminiti homered (21) and he drove in both Bums runs (single for the other). Gas Hornet starter Shawn Boskie took it to the 9th – 8 hits, 2 runs – for the win. | Game #5: | Sanity for the Bums is restored in game 5 as they overcome a 2-1 deficit by plating 2 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th and then hang on over the final 4 innings to win 4-2. Greg Gagne doubles in 2 in the 5th to provide the margin of victory. Jim Bullinger hung around long enough for the win – and Rick Aguilera does his save thing. | Game #2: | Ft. Worth scorches the Tigers again for 11 runs on 17 hits. Kevin Brown and a trio of Panther relievers only gave up 5 hits and two of them were solo home runs by Dante Bichette. Gary Sheffield had a pinch hit homer late for his 19th of the year.
