Hampton Huskies @ Flora-Bama Mullets

Series Preview: Flora-Bama visits Hampton for a short five games series. The Clubhouses were full as both teams took advantage of the expanded rosters.
Game #1: Lee took Lawrence deep in the first to give the Huskies the early lead. Mullets got a homer from Hunter and scored three in the 4th. Both starters avoided any further damage and the bullpens were perfect.
Flora-Bama 3-1
Game #2: The game started with Berkman getting on with a single and Piazza executing a perfect hit and run. However, Berkman tried to come all the way from first and was gunned at home and then Piazza was thrown out trying to take 2B. Piazza hit a two run homer in the 3rd to avoid doing any more running. Mullets also loaded the bases after the homer and scored four more runs to finish the 3rd up 6-0. Huskies got two unearned runs in the 6th. Lee woke up the crowd in the 9th with a two run homer, but Stewart came on and locked it down.
Flora-Bama 6-4
Game #3: Lee hit his third homerun of the series to get things going in the 1st. A walk, HB, a Tarasco rbi double and a FC made it 2-1 Mullets in the 2nd. Vaughn added a rbi single in the 3rd. Flora-Bama loaded the bases in the 5th with no outs and Crede and Vaughn singled to make 6-1. Huskies got one back in the 6th after Burnett left, but that was it.
Flora-Bama 6-2
Game #4: Drew pulled back what would have been a Piazza homer in the 1st, but stubbed his toe and will miss seven days. Back to Back doubles by Simon and Kennedy and then two walks gave the Mullets 1-0 lead in the top of the 2nd. A passed ball by Piazza allowed the Huskies to tie it in the bottom of the 2nd 1-1. Piazza made up for his poor defense with a two run homer in the 3rd. Bell also went deep in the inning and the Mullets took a 6-1 lead. Huskies lost Wigginton in the 3rd as he also stubbed his toe and will be on the DL for a couple weeks. Schilling went six for the win.
Flora-Bama 6-1
Game #5: Hampton jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the 1st on a Lee rbi triple and a Hatteberg two run homer. Tarasco’s two run homer in 5th put Flora-Bama on the board and cut the lead to one. In the 6th, Berkman and Hunter each drove in a run to give the Mullets the lead 4-3. Lugo’s two rbi single in the 8th made it 5-4. Lugo also took 2nd on the play at the plate and then scored on a Hatteberg’s single to make it 5-3 Huskies. Mullets rallied with three hits to pull within one run and put runners on the corners in the 9th with two outs. Wickman got Vizquel to hit a weak grounder back to him, but he then muffed the throw to first allowing the tying run to score. The Mullets loaded the bases with one out in the 10th, but Mantei induced a home to first double play to get out of the jam. In the 11th, Vaughn hit a solo homer to break the tie. Carter pitched the final three innings to give the Mullets the win and the sweep
Flora-Bama 7-6 11th
Series Summary: Derrek Lee had a nice series for the hometowners, but the rest of the offense failed to show. The Mullets didn’t have any major blowouts, but they locked down the series sweep with strong pitching.

Baltimore Blue Crabs @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Game #1: Baltimore Blue Crabs Secure Victory in the opener…
Tuesday, September 3, 2002 – The Baltimore Blue Crabs keep alive their playoff hopes when they delivered an outstanding performance against the Manhattan Gas Hornets in securing a decisive 3-0 victory in the opening game of the 5 game series. This highly anticipated matchup showcased Baltimore’s strategic execution and dominance on the mound and at the plate, keeping the Gas Hornets scoreless throughout the game.Baltimore’s pitchers were instrumental to the victory, delivering a stellar performance. Starting pitcher Woody Williams earned his 8th win of the season with seven shutout innings giving up 5 hits, fanning 6 and walking none lowering his ERA to 2.89. The win gives him an 8-3 record. Relief pitchers Mike Stanton and Tim Worrell continued the dominance, with Worrell securing his 33rd save. Together, Baltimore’s pitching staff accumulated an impressive 11 strikeouts.
Baltimore’s offense proved their mettle with consistent and effective batting. Sean Casey singled in what turned out to be the winning run with a single in the 2nd. Then Russ Branyan stole the spotlight by delivering his 5th home run of the year, driving in two runs and raising his season RBI total to 28 and putting a knife in the back of the Gas Hornets.Manhattan’s batters faced challenges in converting their hits into runs. Though Derek Jeter managed two doubles, raising his season total to 31, and Garrett. Anderson had 2 singles and a stolen base but they couldn’t put anything together against the dominating Blue Crabs pitching.Manhattan’s Matt Morris also pitched well, eight innings with eight strikeouts, but he conceded six hits and three runs, two earned, taking his 7th loss of the.The Blue Crabs win gives them a big ray of hope in their quest for a wild-card berth while the Gas Hornets are dealing with the Flora-Bama Mullets breathing down their necks – so they have to figure out the Baltimore squad.
FINAL Baltimore 3 Manhattan 0
Game #2: Gas Hornets rebound with 12-2 win over the Blue Crabs – even the 5 game set at 1 game apiece.

After being shutout 3-0 in the opening game, the Gas Hornets bounced back finding their bats quickly, scoring 3 in the 2nd and 5 big runs in the 3rd after Baltimore scored 2 in the top half to cut the lead to 3-2. The Blue Crabs jumped back in the game on a Chipper Jones 2 run homer (14) but that was the last of their bats as Mickey Callaway held firm for the win (2-1). Brett Myers didn’t last long, 2.1 innings, 8 hits, 6 runs and 2 homers yielded. Josh Phelps hits a 2 run shot (15) and Lenny Harris hits a solo homer (3) as one of his 2 hits. Derek Jeter had another multiple hit game going 3 for 4 with 4 rbis! Gas Hornets pound out 17 hits – and the Blue Crabs, well they managed 10 hits, drew 4 walks and a HBP but had 13 left on base! Gas Hornets suffered another big injury – they’ve been hit with them a lot lately, but fortunately the rosters are expanded. Damian Jackson gets beaned by Miller and will miss 11 days.

Both teams need to keep winning, Baltimore for playoff chances, Manhattan to stay on top of the NL East.

Game #3: Gas Hornets make it 2 of 3 in series with Blue Crabs winning an impressive 8-4 thriller!

September 6, 2002 — Manhattan, NY: The Manhattan Gas Hornets showcased their dominance on the diamond last night, clinching an impressive 8-4 victory over the Baltimore Blue Crabs in a thrilling night game at Gas Hornets Park. With a stellar combination of offensive firepower and pitching precision, the Gas Hornets once again proved why they are a force to be reckoned with this season.

The game opened with Manhattan establishing early momentum, scoring across multiple innings that culminated in an eight-run tally. The team’s offensive prowess came alive with 14 hits, including Derek Jeter’s 15th home run of the season and Garret Anderson’s 57th double and running his RBI total to 136! Key contributions also came from Chris Singleton, whose triple brought in two critical runs, and Ray Durham, who added to his impressive resume with his 30th stolen base.

On the mound, John Halama delivered a commanding performance, securing his seventh win of the season pitching five solid innings. Manhattan’s bullpen ensured the victory, with Kim earning his 29th save with a flawless outing.

Baltimore grabbed a 4-1 lead with 4 in the 2nd lead by efforts highlighted by Jorge Posada, who hit two doubles to bring his season total to 29, and Jimmy Rollins, whose ninth triple demonstrated his versatility at the plate. Despite their determination, the Blue Crabs struggled to capitalize on opportunities, leaving seven runners stranded during the rest of the game. Pitcher Vincente Padilla faced difficulty in containing Manhattan’s offense, taking his ninth loss of the season.

As the Manhattan Gas Hornets celebrate this pivotal victory, they continue to build momentum for their playoff aspirations. Meanwhile, the Baltimore Blue Crabs will look to regroup and refine their strategies as their playoff hopes are slipping away.

FINAL Manhattan 8 Baltimore 4

Game #4: Pivotal game in series goes to Manhattan 4-2 with late inning excitement!

Barry Zito on the mound and he takes a 1-0 lead into the 7th after the Blue Crabs Russ Branyan drives in one with a SF in the 4th. But an Adam Dunn error in the bottom of the 7th leads to 2 unearned Gas Hornets runs. Manhattan then works to close it out but after Rick Reed gives up a lead off homer to Jimmy Rollins (9) in the 8th and Winn. So an itchy Mark Guthrie comes into quiet the Blue Crabs and despite giving up a walk, he shuts down Baltimore leaving the game tied after 7 ½. Barry Zito does not come back out on the mound going 7, 5 hits, no walks, 4 ks and 2 UNEARNED runs. Branden Looper gets the call – and well – he doesn’t get the job done. He gives up 3 hits, 2 runs with rbi doubles from Jason Kendall and Garrett Anderson. Kim comes on in the 9th, making it interesting giving up a single and walk but then retiring the next three for his 30th save! Derek Jeter had another 3 hit game, is he coming alive down the stretch? And Garrett Anderson also had 3 hits!

FINAL Manhattan 4 Baltimore 2

Game #5: Series finale turns into a breather for Manhattan as Tim Wakefield and 2 relievers combine for a 3 hit shutout and a big 9-0 win!

Garrett Anderson’s 1st triple of the season gives him 2 rbis (139 on the season) and Jason Kendall, Quinton McCracken and Josh Phelps all had 2 rbis in the game – Phelps launched his 16th homer! But the story was the pitching led by Tim Wakefield (19-3) and his 1 hit, 6 innings of pitching. Vladimir Nunez and Mike Williams add 3 scoreless innings of relief (2 hits) to top off the team shutout.

Tim Hudson takes the loss for Baltimore as their postseason hopes really take a hit losing 4 games after the opening victory.

FINAL Manhattan 9 Baltimore 0

Series Summary: Gas Hornets turn around the series after dropping the opener 3-0, to grab a 4-1 week against a tough Baltimore squad. Leading the way was perhaps a Player of the Week performance from Derek Jeter who goes 11 for 21 this week. Lots of team effort as they deal with injuries to Cordero (back for next week), Matt Stairs, still another week to miss and now Damian Jackson. But with a crowded dugout, everyone is looking to contribute. Next week it’s back to Hampton where we struggled a week ago. Who knows what will happen, can we get some road magic? Baltimore travels to Flora-Bama, not a good place to heal, but a great place to be spoiler!!

Series Summary: Blarney Drive takes 4 of 5 from Long Beach.

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Hollywood Vampires

Series Summary: Hollywood takes 4 of 5 at home against Winnipeg. Hollywood awaits the Long Beach-Blarney series, hoping their good friends to the south could take at least 1 game (any more than that would be a gift) to keep them 3 games back heading into their 5 game home set against Blarney. It’s unlikely they will catch them, but they will try. They look to be positioned to play the NLE loser in a 3 game -winner-take-all series as an NL Wild Card team
