Dondero Oaks @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: The Oaks visit the Hounds as the 1st and 4th place teams in the AL West meet up. The Hounds are still trying to get some distance from California in this tight race for the division.
Game #1: Castle Rock gets on the board first with a Ryan Ludwick two-out RBI single in the 2nd. But, Dondero ties it back up with a D’Angelo Jimenez single in the 3rd. Castle Rock gets back-to-back homers from Luis Gonzalez and Mark Ellis to take a 3-1 lead. Hounds tack on two more in the 5th to make it 5-1, but Valentin hits a 2-run shot for Dondero to cut the lead to 5-3.

Ellis gets the runs right back with his second homer of the game to make it 7-3 in the bottom of the 6th. Castle Rock adds one more and that is how it ends, 8-3 Hounds.

WP: Rogers (16-5)
LP: Johnson (4-9)

Game #2: Tejera vs. Pettitte in this one. Tejera gets wild in the 4th, walking in two runs and throwing a wild pitch, as Castle Rock takes a 4-1 lead. That is all the scoring we would see, as both teams get 6 hits, but the Hounds take advantage of the walks. Pettitte strikes out 10 in 7 IP and the relievers add 5 more to give the Oaks 15 strikeouts on the game. Pettitte moves his record to a ridiculous 16-1 on the season.

WP: Pettitte (16-1)
LP: Tejera (3-11)
S: Benitez (27)

Game #3: Kearns puts Dondero up early with a 2-run shot in the 1st. The Hounds can’t solve Jason Jennings and are down 3-0 after 6 innings. Jennings gets pulled after 8 shutout innings and gives way to Rivera. He walks Bonds and gives up a single to Sweeney to start the inning. But, he gets the next three batters in order and finishes off the 3-0 shutout for the Oaks.

WP: Jennings (6-10)
LP: Lohse (10-7)
S: Rivera (22)

Game #4: Valentin and Molina hit solo shots off of Pineiro to stake Dondero out to a 2-0 lead in the 3rd. Meanwhile, Castle Rock’s cold streak continues, as they have now gone 18 straight innings without scoring a run. This is unprecedented for this offensive juggernaut. The Hounds finally break through with a 2-out 2-RBI bases loaded single from Dye to tie at 2-2 in the bottom of the 6th.

Dondero gets two in the 8th to take a 4-2 lead. Castle Rock gets one back with a Sweeney homer. Valentin and Thomas go back-to-back, both hitting their second homer of the game, to make it 6-3, Dondero, in the 9th. That is how it ends, with Mariano getting the save again. The series is tied 2-2.

WP: Carrara (2-4)
LP: Pineiro (16-8)
S: Rivera (23)

Game #5: Sanders gets Dondero on the board in the 1st with a solo homer, as the ball keeps flying out of the friendly confines. It is 2-2 going into the bottom of the 7th until Barrett hits a homer out of the 9 hole for Castle Rock. Wilkerson and Dye get back-to-back doubles to make it 6-2. And, that is how it ends.

WP: Benitez (7-3)
LP: Tomko (4-13)

Game #6: Kaz Ishii and Kenny Rogers are dealing in this one, with the game standing at 1-0 after 6. Dondero adds another in the 9th and Rivera comes on to close out the shutout in the 9th. Dondero gets the shutout and the series split.

WP: Ishii (7-12)
LP: Rogers (16-6)
S: Rivera (24)

Series Summary: Dondero and Castle Rock split the series, giving California some room to make up ground in the AL West. Castle Rock’s offense gets shut out twice.

Long Beach Titans @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview: Long beach and Winnipeg a sad pair of teams.
Series Summary: Long beach wins 4 of the 6 games at Winnipeg.

Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: First versus last as hapless Hampton hosts marvelous Manhattan.
Game #1: Tim Wakefield allowed just three hits in seven innings and Garret Anderson doubled and homered to propel the Hornets to a 3-0 win.
Game #2: Another double and homer game for Garret Anderson and he and Jason Kendall each had three hits in an easy 9-3 Manhattan win.
Game #3: The astounding Kris Benson went the distance and limited the Hornets to five hits in a 3-1 Hampton win. Garret Anderson didn’t homer or hit a double for a change. Marcus Giles had a solo home run for Hampton.
Game #4: A rare non-putrid start for Ryan Dempster as he gave up just a couple of runs over six innings and Huskies’ bullpen miraculously held onto a lead as the home team even things up in the series with a 4-3 win. Geoff Blum homered for Manhattan and Derrek Lee did the same for Hampton.
Game #5: A wild game that had Manhattan spring into a lead with a solo homer by Garret Anderson in the 1st inning only to have Hampton send 11 men to the plate in their half of the inning and score six runs. The scoring for both sides just continued from there with Tino Martinez adding a homer for Manhattan, but the visitors fell short with Hampton winning 12-9. Ray Durham had four hits and drove in three for Manhattan. Rob Mackowiak was 3/3 with three runs but got nailed in the back with a pitch and knocked off Hampton’s roster for the next five days.
Game #6: Tim Wakefield dominated the Huskies once again and allowed just one run on two hits in a 4-1 win for Manhattan. Tino Martinez homered once again for the Hornets and Ray Durham had four hits for the second straight game.
Series Summary: A somewhat miraculous split leaves the door somewhat open for Flora-Obama to make up ground on Manhattan while Hampton just sits on the dock of the bay and watches the tide roll in (and over them).

California Quakes @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Summary: Ft. Worth plays tough, but still loses 5 games to the Quakes, who now lead the AL West by 1/2 game.

Michigan Marauders @ Danbury Mad Hatters

Series Preview: Two teams basically tied for last place, see if one can cement the other in last place
Game #1: M 11-3 Boone GS
Game #2: M 6-3 Boone 3 run HR
Game #3: M 9-2 yep Boone 3 run HR
Game #4: M 5-2 B Williams 2 HR
Game #5: M 10-4 Castiila 2 HRs
Game #6: D 6-4
Series Summary: Michigan cements Danbury into last place.

Iowa Giants @ Houghton Penguins

Series Summary: Houghton sweeps Iowa, 6-0.

Chicago Demolition @ outhlake Stealers

Series Preview: Chicago looking to stay in the wild card hunt. Meanwhile Southlake continues to get “Jiggy for Miggy”. Its not as catchy as Suck for Luck when Andrew Luck was leaving college, but it rhymes.
Series Summary: Chicago sweeps the series. first four games were close and last two were blow outs.

Flora-Bama Mullets @ Baltimore Blue Crabs

Series Preview: As Flora-Bama (87-42) comes to town, Baltimore (76-53) needs a BIG series if they hope to make up ground in the N.L. Wild Card race.
Game #1: Mullets draw first blood, winning the opener, 4-2. A.J. Burnett pitches 5 2/3 innings and holds Baltimore to a run on 5 hits to win his 14th game of the season. 5 of Flora-Bama’s 7 hits are doubles.

MULLETS 4 / 7 / 1
CRABS 2 / 6 / 1
WP – Burnett (14-4)
LP – Hudson (15-7)
S – Stewart (8)

Game #2: Chipper Jones’ RBI single plates Adam Dunn to cap a 2-run 8th to tie the game. But in the 10th, Mike Piazza, whom Baltimore tormented for 4 stolen bases during the game, gets redemption with the game-winning, solo homerun and the Mullets win 2 in a row, 4-3.

MULLETS 4 / 12 / 1
CRABS 3 / 8 / 0
WP – Hammond (10-4)
LP – Looper (7-5)
S – Stewart (9)

Game #3: A Torii Hunter 2-run homerun and Shawn Wooten RBI double stake the Mullets to a 3-0 lead in the first. Baltimore would claw back with single runs over the first 5 innings to take a 5-3 lead. But Flora-Bama strikes back with 3 in the 6th to regain the lead, only to see Baltimore score another single run in the bottom of the 6th to tie it up at 6. Adam Dunn would club a walk-off, solo homerun to win it for Baltimore, 7-6.

MULLETS 6 / 11 / 0
CRABS 7 / 12 / 1
WP – Worrell (2-3)
LP – Smith (2-2)

Game #4: One of the weirdest box scores you will ever see. Baltimore scores 3 runs in the first on a single, 2 walks, 4 stolen bases, and 2 SAC flys to build a 3-0 lead. Flora-Bama would score a pair of runs in the 4th and would knot the score at 3 on an Adam Kennedy RBI single in the 6th. The Crabs would score one in the 6th and the Mullets would score one in the 8th and we would go extra innings again. After Omar Vizquel scores on a groundout in the 11th for Flora-Bama, Jeremy Giambi would connect for a 2-run walk-off homerun to win it for the Crabs. Baltimore gets outhit 13-3, but they use 7 walks, 7 stolen bases, and a clutch homerun to even the series at 2-2.

MULLETS 5 / 13 / 1
CRABS 6 / 3 / 2
WP – Worrell (3-3)
LP – Smith (2-3)

Game #5: Another extra inning affair, Chipper Jones would double and come around to score on a Jorge Posada RBI single as Baltimore wins its 3rd 1-run game in a row. Barry Zito gave a tired Baltimore bullpen a rest, pitching 10 innings, striking out 13, to put the Crabs in the position to win.

MULLETS 4 / 6 / 0
CRABS 5 / 7 / 0
WP – Yan (1-0)
LP – Neal (2-2)

Game #6: Flora-Bama would use 3 homeruns, 2 by Lance Berkman and 1 by Torii Hunter, to take the finale and earn the series split.

MULLETS 4 / 8 / 1
CRABS 3 / 8 / 1
WP – Politte (5-1)
LP – Hudson (15-8)

Series Summary: Close series, five 1-run games, three going extras, ends in a 3-3 split. Baltimore successfully stole 27 bases on 30 attempts during the series, but the Crabs needed to win at least 4 games, preferably 5, to have any realistic hope of making the playoffs.

Monroeville Maulers @ Harper Woods Expos

Series Preview: Monroeville visits Harper Woods.
Series Summary: The Expos take 4 of 6.

Hollywood Vampires @ Blarney Drive Bandits

Series Summary: Blarney was fortunate to take 4 of 6. Vampires bats went quiet in games 3 and 4 which afforded the Bandits a big break.

Corktown Bootleggers @ DeWitt Tigers

Series Summary: Dewitt and Corktown split.

Valdosta Bombers @ Gladstone Gladiators

Series Preview: The Central Division leading Valdosta Bombers visit second-place Gladstone for a six game series. The Gladiators are trying to make a run at the title, knowing that they have no chance at a wild card, while the Bombers are trying to hold their lead.
Game #1: Gladstone scored single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th innings to take a 3-0 lead. Rick Helling held Valdosta scoreless through seven innings, but gave up a couple of unearned runs in the 8th and yielded the mound to Chad Zerbe, who held the Bombers off the rest of the inning. Steve Karsay took over in the 9th and gave up a pair of runs, blowing the save. With the Bombers leading 4-3, the Gladiators replied with unlikely hero Juan Uribe blasting a 2-run homer to win the game.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 5 – VAL 4
Game #2: This game was an unlikely pitchers’ duel between Mike Maroth for the Gladiators and Kevin Appier for the Bombers. Neither pitcher allowed a run, both giving up 4 hits. Appier went 12.1 innings, and Maroth went 13.2. The game’s only run came when Mark Grudzielanek doubled in Orlando Cabrera in the top of the 16th inning off of Carlos Silva.
FINAL SCORE: VAL 1 – GLA 0
Game #3: Another low-scoring affair, with Valdosta managing a run in the 2nd, and Gladstone answering with 1 in the 3rd and another in the 8th.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 2 – VAL 1
Game #4: The Gladiators opened up with 4 runs in the 1st, including a 3-run shot by Jeff Bagwell. Javier Vazquez held the Bombers to a single run in 7 innings of work.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 6 – VAL 1
Game #5: Gladstone jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd, but Valdosta came back with 3 in the 3rd, and then tied it in the top of the 9th. The Gladiators didn’t score in their half, so the game went into extra innings. It wasn’t the marathon that Game 2 was, as Gladstone ended it in the bottom of the 10th.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 5 – VAL 4
Game #6: At this point, Gladstone was dreaming of winning 5 of 6 and getting close to the division lead, but Valdosta had other ideas, shelling Game 1 hero Rick Helling for 6 runs over the first two innings. The Gladiator bats were quiet, only managing 3 runs through the course of the game. Helling gave up a couple more runs later, and the bullpen didn’t do much better.
FINAL SCORE: VAL 12 – GLA 3
Series Summary: Gladstone takes the series 4 games to 2, pulling to 2.5 games back of the Central Division lead.
