California Quakes @ Southlake Stealers |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | California keeps pressure on in the AL West by sweeping Southlake. The big news was a game two No-Hitter by Dessens. He hit one batter and walked one while striking out four. |
DeWitt Tigers @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | First place in the East faces off against first place in the West as the Tigers and Hounds tangle in Castle Rock. Both squads are in tight races in their respective divisions, so this should be a consequential series. |
Game #1: | Castle Rock scores the first two runs on solo homers from Bonds and Ellis. Meanwhile, trade pickup Munro is dealing for Castle Rock, getting through 7.1 IP of shutout ball. Benitez and Sasaki combine to finish the shutout for the Hounds with a final of 3-0.
WP: Munro (4-4) |
Game #2: | Dewitt breaks its run-less streak with two in the first off of Rogers and with Maddux on the mound they have to feel good about their chances. Those are all the runs that Dewitt can muster through 8 innings, and Polanco delivers a 2-out RBI double to make it 2-1 in the bottom of the 8th. But, Bellhorn can’t get Polanco home and it stays at 2-1. Reed gets the Hounds to go 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 9th and it is a 2-1 Dewitt victory.
WP: Maddux (13-8) |
Game #3: | Castle Rock jumps on Ponson early, highlighted by a 2-run homer from Bonds in the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead. But, Dewitt is hanging in there, getting a 2-run homer from Mike Cameron and a 3-run shot from Andruw Jones to take a 6-4 lead and run Pettitte from the contest. Mora adds a 2-run shot of his own to make it 8-4.
The Hounds get one back in the bottom of the 5th and another in the 7th to cut it to 8-6. And with two out and two on, Bonds delivers a double to tie it at 8-8 in the 7th. In the bottom of the 9th, Barrett leads off with a walk and Bellhorn pinch runs for him. Ellis walks as well, giving Castle Rock runners on 1st and 2nd with one out and Bonds at the plate. He walks, bringing up Dye wtih the bases loaded and one out. With the infield in, Dye grounds to short and the winning run is cut down on the force. Reed then gets Wilkerson to strike out looking and we are headed to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, the Hounds load the bases AGAIN. This time it is Mark Ellis that strikes out to end the threat and we are headed to the 11th. Finally, in the bottom of the 11th, Wilkerson doubles home Bonds from 1st and the Hounds take it by a final of 9-8. WP: Benitez (6-3) |
Game #4: | This one is pretty quiet through 5 innings, standing at 1-1. But, Andruw Jones breaks it open with a 2-run homer in the 6th for Dewitt. Sosa adds another in the 8th and it is 6-1, Dewitt. Castle Rock is able to scrape back to get the tying run at the plate with nobody out in the 9th, but Koch gets Ellis to strike out and Blanco to hit into a double play to close out a 6-3 victory for Dewitt and the series is tied a two apiece.
WP: Milton (9-5) |
Game #5: | It is tied at 1-1 through eight, as Pineiro and Colon are throwing well. It is the same way as we head to extra innings. Colon is still pitching to start the 11th and is finally pulled after giving up a lead-off single to Alex Gonzalez. Koch comes in and walks Michael Barrett to give Castle Rock 1st and 2nd with nobody out. He gets Luis Gonzalez to strike out, but Bellhorn delivers a single down the line to score Alex Gonzalez and that is how it ends, 2-1 Castle Rock. Colon gets a tough loss, going 10 innings and allowing 2 earned.
WP: Sasaki (9-1) |
Game #6: | The bats go quiet again in this one, as Dewitt holds a 1-0 lead after 7 innings. Munro is great again for the Hounds going 7.2 IP and allowing just an RBI double to Mora. But, Byrd is better for Dewitt, going 7.1 without allowing anything. Reed comes on in the bottom of the 9th and Sweeney greets him with a double. But, he gets Wilkerson to strike out and Polanco to line out to right. With two outs and down one run, Bonds steps up as a pinch-hitter from Snow. With first base open, Reed elects to pitch to Barry instead of intentionally walking the winning run. And, the strategy pays off as Reed gets Bonds to strike out to end the game. The final is 1-0, Dewitt.
WP: Byrd (15-4) |
Series Summary: | A really tight series, with four one-run games, sees the top teams in the AL East and West split at 3-3. |
