Southlake Stealers @ Castle Rock Hounds |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | The teams with the best and worst records in the AL face off in Castle Rock as the Hounds are trying to get as much distance as they can between themselves and those pesky Quakes. |
Game #1: | Southlake seems to have this one in hand as they take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 7th, but Castle Rock gets one in that frame, and then walks it off on Smoltz with a 2-out RBI single from Todd Greene, giving the Hounds the 4-3 victory in the series opener. No homers in the game, a rarity for a Castle Rock contest.
WP: Quantrill (5-1) |
Game #2: | Southlake sends their ace, Mark Prior, to the mound to face the Hounds’ Munro. Prior is every bit of an ace in this one, going the complete game and scattering 3 hits and 1 walk to go along with 12 strikeouts. He does not give up any runs. Meanwhile, three guys for Southlake hit solo homers (Rondell White, Blalock and Einer Diaz) and they cruise to a 5-0 victory.
WP: Prior (7-3) |
Game #3: | The stupid Hounds owner forgot to dome the stadium and we have a rain out after 3 innings and the Hounds leading 3-0. |
Game #4: | Todd Greene’s grand slam in the 6th off of Hasegawa gives Castle Rock a 7-2 lead. Wilkerson extends it to 9-3 with his second homer of the game. The final is 9-4, Castle Rock, as Wilkerson and Bonds both get 4 hits for the Hounds, including two homers from Wilkerson. Andy Pettitte continues his ridiculous season, moving his record to 15-1.
WP: Pettitte (15-1) |
Game #5: | Through five innings, the only run scored is off of a Wilkerson RBI triple, but Bonds adds to the Castle Rock lead with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th and the Hounds are up 3-0. Wilkerson, who has been on fire lately, delivers a homer in the 8th to extend the lead to 5-0. Bonds hits his second homer, a grand slam, in the bottom of the 8th as well, as Castle Rock scores 8 runs in the inning. Meanwhile, Lohse goes 8.2 IP and gets the victory.
WP: Lohse (10-5) |
Game #6: | It’s a really tight game through six innings, with Castle Rock holding a one-run lead. Sturtze found his way out of a jam in nearly every inning to give Southlake a fighting chance. In the top of the 8th, Eckstein is thrown out at home to keep it at 3-2. Benitez comes on to close it for Castle Rock and the final is 3-2. Tanyon Sturtze moves to 1-15 on the year despite a decent outing.
WP: Pineiro (16-7) |
Series Summary: | Castle Rock takes 4 out of 5. Would have likely been 5 out of 6 if they had remembered to dome the stadium (new computer and forgot). |
Gladstone Gladiators @ Long Beach Titans |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | Long Beach takes the first two games of the series, loses the last four, & even got trounced in game six by the score of 17-1. |
Danbury Mad Hatters @ Flora-Bama Mullets |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Danbury comes to town with the fourth worst record in the NL, yet only six games back of the NL Central leader. Flora-Bama looks to stay hot before going on a long road trip. |
Game #1: | Danbury struck first with solo homer from Biggio in the 1st. Vaughn’s rbi single tied in the bottom of the inning. Solo homers from Kennedy and Gil gave the Mullets a 3-1 lead after three innings. Thome’s two rbi homer tied it in 4th. Kingsdale went deep for the first time this year giving the Mullets a 5-3 lead. Figerro left in the 5th with one on and two outs. Kennedy’s rbi double made it 6-3 and tagged Figerrro with another earned run. Four straight hits in the 7th would have tied it 6-6, but Berkman gunned Cox at home to preserve a one run lead. Gill then threw out Cedeno trying to steal second. Flora-Bama 6-5 |
Game #2: | Alou picked up a rbi single in the 1st and Thome hit a two run homer in 3rd to put the Mad Hatters up 3-0. Bell’s two run homer in 5th made it a one run game. In the 7th, Haynes walked two runners with two outs and was replaced by Wohlers. Kingsdale singled to left field. Cedeno through home to try and get Bell and the throw wasn’t cut so Berkman and Kingsdale took 3rd and 2nd. Wohlers then IW Hunter to load the bases and face weak hitting Gil. Wooten pinch hit for Gil and singled in two more runs to give the Mullets their first lead of the game 5-3. In the 8th with two outs, Mahomes walked Vizquel, hit Bell and then IW Berkman to load the bases before getting Kingsdale to ground out. Hammond hit Gutierreez in the 9th (lost for 11 days), but then locked things down for the save. Flora-Bama 5-3 |
Game #3: | Hunter’s solo got the Mullets on the board in 1st, but it could have been two runs if Piazza hadn’t been doubled up for his 20th time of the year. Kennedy added a two run homer in the 2nd. Thome hit his third homer in as many games to put Danbury on the board. In the 4th, Cedeno made a shoestring catch and then threw out Rowand at the plate. Rowand didn’t like the call and said something to the umpire. Bell’s solo and Gil’s rbi double gave the Mullets a 5-1 lead in the 7th. The extra runs became important in the 8th, when Griffey double, Robinson singled and Thome hit another homer. Neal came on and recorded the final four outs for his second save of the season. Flora-Bama 5-4 |
Game #4: | Griffey’s rbi single allowed an unearned run to score in the 1st. Griffey doubled in another run in the 5th. Mullets finally got on the board in 5th on a Berkman sac fly. Gil doubled to start the 6th and the Hatters brought in Day. Day got Vaughn to ground to SS but Perez through it away allowing the tying run to score. Simon reached on an error to start the bottom of the 8th. Gil walked with one out to put two runners on. Wohlers came on and got the second out but the Hatters fourth error of the game allowed Vizquel to reach and the pinch runner for Simon to score the go ahead run. In the bottom of the 9th, Perez walked with one out. Biggio then walked with two outs to put a runner in scoring posistion, but Stewart came on and got the last out. Flora-Bama 3-2 |
Game #5: | Danbury batted around and put up a six spot on Beckett in the 2nd capped by a Truby two run homer. Mullets brought in the scurbs and then rattled off four straight hits on the ace Lowe to score three runs. Thome took Bedard deep for a three run homer in the 6th. Another five runs in the 9th as the Mad Hatters went a bit crazy on Bedard. Lowe picked up win #16. Danbury 15-3 |
Game #6: | Berkman hit the pole for a two run homer in the 1st. Danbury got one back in the 2nd after a Piazza passed ball. Gil replaced Piazza for defense in the 4th and gunned Cedeno trying to steal. Hunter doubled and Berkman knocked him home for 3-1 lead. In the 6th, Burnett walked Thome and Griffey took him deep to tie it. (should brought in the lefty two batters earlier). Hunter’s solo in the bottom of the 6th gave the Mullets back the lead. In the bottom of the 8th, Sullivan intentionally walked Berkman with a runner on to face Vaughn. Mo made him pay with a three run bomb. The first two Hatter batters walked in the 9th, so the Mullets pivoted to Stewart and he locked it down before Thome could come up again. Flora-Bama 7-3 |
Series Summary: | Great home series for the Mullets as they lose one blowout and win 5 close games. The best defense in MWWL shined again while Danbury’s defense cost them at least two games. Thome was the player of the series and should have a good shot at the NL award this week. |
Fort Worth Panthers @ Corktown Bootleggers |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | Corktown and Fort Wayne split a series the Bootleggers desperately needed to win. |
Chicago Demolition @ Iowa Giants |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Two teams going different direction Chicago competing for playoffs, Iowa trying not being last. |
Series Summary: | Chicago takes Four of Six. |
Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Winnipeg comes to the big Apple – they’ve always been a thorn in our side. We can’t afford a bad week however, not the way Flora-Bama keeps on charging. And heading to Hollywood next week (not be in the movies – but to face off with the Vampires – probably a blood sucking event). Well, here goes…. |
Game #1: | Rick Reed gives us a breather in game 1 – tosses a 6 hitter, 1 run ad Vazuez rbi double in the 3rd. Vazquez had 3 of the 6 Goldeyes hits. Bottom of the 3rd, the Gas Hornets turn on the heat and plate 5 runs. Blum was the big bat in this one, 2 hits, 4 rbis, homer (9) and Tino stepped up his game for a change with 3 hits and 2 runs. FINAL MGH 7 WGE 1 WP Reed (11-5) LP Driskell (4-14) |
Game #2: | Gas Hornets bats are again on display in the 2nd game with 16 hits. The Goldeyes score a big 4 runs in the 6th, Carl Everett unloaded (9) for a 3 run homer, but that made the score 6-4 and got Winnipeg back in the game. That is until Manhattan responded with 3 more runs in the half of the 6th. We added 3 more in the 8th for a 12-4 final. Jeter, Anderson and McCracken each had 3 hits and the Q man drove in 5 runs! FINAL MGH 12 WGE 4 WP Jarvis (5-1) S Nunez (4) LP Wells (6-13) |
Game #3: | Manhattan again gets off to quick start with 3 in the 1st and 2 more in the 2nd and 2 more in the 7th for a big 7-1 lead. Robin Ventura strokes his 20th dinger in the 8th for 2 too late runs and Manhattan is up 3-0 in the series. Jeter, 3 hits, 3 rbis, homer (14) and Anderson, 2 hits, 3 rbis, homer (28) pace the attack. FINAL MGH 7 WGE 3 WP Wakefield (16-3) LP Saarloos (3-6) |
Game #4: | Things were going well until John Thomson shows up for Winnipeg in game 4 – and boy does he. He’s cruising along tossing a big shutout through 6. Big problem however, is Matt Morris is practically tossing a no-hitter against him. But then, the bane of the Gas Hornets – their defense – betrays them. Top of the 7th and Derek Jeter (SS 8) commits his 23rd error of the season! And then he infects Tino Martinez who makes his 4th and instead of getting out the inning unscathed, they end up allowing the Goldeyes to score 3 runs – even Morris got flustered as he lost control for a bit. Needless to say, Morris ends up giving up 3 runs for the game – all unearned – as he goes the distance.
And finally, in the 9th, the Gas Hornets wake up, oh year. But the rally ends when Josh Phelps slugs a 2 run homer to pull within 1, but then Tino an Shane (ugh) Spencer fail to get on and the game ends with the Goldeyes on top. Nice CG for THomson! |
Game #5: | Game 4 set the tone for the rest of the series as we end up with 2 more 1 run games (both low scoring) for a 3 pack of those 1 run events. Tom Glavine heads out to beat up the Gas Hornets and sure enough Jeter muffs another one in the 1st (1 of 3 Gas Hornets errors on the day). And it leads to an unearned run!And boy that unearned run is looking ever so good as Glavine is not allowing much of anything by the Gas Hornets – seems like all their bats exited pretty much after game 3. However, we catch a break in the 7th when Glavine gives up a couple of walks and then a combo of a Cordero single and Goldeyes fielding miscues, Manhattan manages to score 2 runs (1 unearned) to grab a 2-1 lead. Brian Anderson pitches through the 8th – giving up 3 hits (no earned runs) and Kim comes in for the save. On the day, the Goldeyes get 4 hits while the Gas Hornets get 2! Both teams commit 3 errors (that’s 2 3 error games in a row for Manhattan – far cry from the stellar defense of the Flora-Bama gang. FINAL MGH 2 WGE 1 WP Anderson (6-6) S Kim (24) LP Glavine (7-14) |
Game #6: | Oops – this one isn’t a 1 run game, it’s a 2 run game. The game is scoreless through 3 and the Carl Everett slugs a solo homer (10), his 2nd of the series, and Winnipeg grabs the 1-0 lead. In the bottom half Manhattan strings a few hits together and plate 3 runs to counter the Winnipeg score and after 4 it’s 3-1 Gas Hornets. Then Guthrie and Kim get together and silences Winnipeg for the final 2.1 innings preserving the game for Rick Reed (who had a very nice 2 win week). FINAL MGH 3 WGE 1 WP Reed (12-5) S Kim (25) LP Driskill (4-15) |
Series Summary: | Well we managed to grab 5 of 6, just to keep pace. Now to the West Coast and the Vampires – should be tough week for sure (especially if the fielding goes haywire – other – and the bats go cold!!). But go west young man (or men)……. |
Valdosta Bombers @ Baltimore Blue Crabs |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | N.L. Central leaders, the Valdosta Bombers (57-59) visit Baltimore (68-49), winners of 7 straight. The Crabs are running out of time as they attempt to make the playoffs, sitting 6 games out of the final N.L. spot. |
Game #1: | Both starters, Masato Yoshii for Valdosta and Vincente Padilla for Baltimore, are sharp early, pitching shutouts through 5 innings. In the 6th, the Bombers load the bases with one out, but Padilla gets Mark Grudzielanek to ground into a double play to keep the game scoreless. In the bottom of the 6th, the Crabs finally get to Yoshii – Randy Winn doubles, Andy Fox singles, and Adam Dunn blasts a 3-run homerun for a 3-0 lead. In the 7th, Preston Wilson throws out Bobby Abreu at the plate to preserve the shutout. Padilla goes the distance. He scatters 10 hits and 3 walks, but the Bombers are unable to capitalize.
BOMBERS 0 / 10 / 0 |
Game #2: | Baltimore scores 2 in the first, thanks to a Jeremy Giambi solo homerun and a Tony Batista RBI single. It’s Batista again in the 3rd, this time with a 3-run double putting the Crabs in front, 5-0. Richie Sexson’s solo homerun in the 6th, breaks Valdosta’s 13 inning scoreless streak to start the series, but it’s not enough as Baltimore rolls 11-2. In the 7th, Giambi adds a 2nd homerun for the Crabs.
BOMBERS 2 / 7 / 1 |
Game #3: | To start the 2nd, the Bombers load the bases on a walk and 2 singles. Orlando Cabrera doubles plating 2. Valdosta scores another on a Bobby Abreu groundout to take a 3-0 lead. In the 5th, the Bombers pad the lead on a Manny Ramirez solo homerun, his 31st. Jamie Moyer dazzles, shutting out Baltimore on 5 hits and 2 walks to run his record to 15-6 on the season.
BOMBERS 6 / 13 / 0 |
Game #4: | Steve Finley blasts a 3-run, 1st inning homerun, to give the Bombers an early lead. Valdosta would score two more in the 3rd to open up a 5-0 lead. In the home half of the 5th, a Tony Batista solo homerun and Andy Fox RBI single get Baltimore on the board. Down 3 in the 8th, a Jorge Posada RBI single, followed by a Tony Batista 3-run homerun would give the Crabs the lead. In the 9th, Jason LaRue would lead off with a double, but he gets picked off. Manny Ramirez follows with a pinch-hit single. The pinch runner, Jose Macias is promptly thrown out trying to steal second and the Crabs hold on for the one run victory.
BOMBERS 5 / 8 / 0 |
Game #5: | Back-to-back doubles off the bats of Richie Sexson and Steve Finley give Valdosta a 1-0 lead in the 2nd. Baltimore answers with a Tony Batista single, scoring Chipper Jones, and the score is knotted at 1. Andy Fox singles, steals second and scores on a Chipper RBI single to put the Crabs in front in the 3rd. Valdosta responds in the 4th; 3 straight singles load the bases to start the inning. 2 runs score when Batista’s throw gets by Adam Dunn at first. Valdosta would score another run on a fielder’s choice to take a 4-2 4th inning lead. Steve Finley would add a 2-run, 8th inning, homerun to complete the scoring. Baltimore does bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, but fail to score. Jorge Posada twice throws Bobby Abreu out trying to steal second.
BOMBERS 6 / 9 / 0 |
Game #6: | Scoreless game until the bottom of the 4th. Adam Dunn draws a walk and Chipper Jones follows with a single to start the inning. Masato Yoshii gets the next two batters, but Tony Batista delivers again, with his 2nd 3-run homerun of the series, to put Baltimore up 3-0. In the 5th, Valdosta finally scores on Vincente Padilla compliments of a Mark Grudzielanek solo homerun. Eric Chavez’s solo homerun in the 6th draws the Bombers within a run, but the Crabs bullpen shuts down Valdosta after that to preserve the game and series victory.
BOMBERS 2 / 6 / 0 |
Series Summary: | Thanks to some big 3-run homeruns, Baltimore manages to win the series 4-2. Baltimore really needed to win 5 or 6 here but fail to do so and fall farther behind in the N.L. playoff race. The Bombers maintain their N.L. Central Division lead, and despite having 13 more wins than Valdosta, Baltimore finds themselves on the outside of the playoff picture. |
Monroeville Maulers @ Houghton Penguins |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | Monroeville takes 4 of 6 games from Houghton. |
Hollywood Vampires @ Hampton Huskies |
|
---|---|
Series Preview: | Should be a helluva series as the worst starting pitcher grade for Hollywood is more than any two starters from Hampton combined. |
Game #1: | A five-run 2nd inning was all it took to get rid of Ryan Dumpster and then the Vampires put it in cruise control and coasted to a 6-3 never-in-doubt win. A nice game as the Vampires are lousy with former Hampton players including Craig Counsell who was 3/5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. |
Game #2: | A shockingly close game that had Hampton up 1-0 right up until starting pitcher Jeff Suppan ran out of gas in the 9th and then the bullpen took over and blew the lead in typical fine style to give Hollywood a 2-1 win. |
Game #3: | The first of two games that came with a laugh track – Hollywood wins this nail-biter 10-1 with homers by Cliff Floyd, Brian Daubach and Herbert Perry. Roy Oswalt gave up one unearned run in eight innings for his 13th win. Paul Konerko (0/4) was the big loser for the Vamps as their only hitter without a hit. |
Game #4: | An encore presentation with eerily similar performances on both sides with Hollywood winning 15-2. Konerko and Ortiz homered for the good guys who had another pitcher (Roy Halladay) reach the 13-win mark with a six-inning performance in which he allowed just one unearned run. Aramis Ramirez inched closer to the .500 OPS mark with a homer as his only hit in four plate appearances. |
Game #5: | Glory be … Hampton wins a game. Marcus Giles had three hits and scored twice in support of the only Huskies’ pitcher that seems to ever win games any more – Kris Benson. Benson (8-12) went the distance only because we were scared to go to the pen. |
Game #6: | Another come-from-behind win against the spectacularly putrid Hampton bullpen with the Vampires exsanguinating the Huskies 3-2. Hampton led 2-1 until the 8th but then Hollywoed scored a run in the 8th to tie it (Daubach RBI single) and then one more in the 9th (Rafael Furcal RBI single) to win it. |
Series Summary: | A few deceptively close games and two romps by Hollywood improve their record to 79-44 while Hampton’s Leisure Suit Larry approach to baseball clunks them in at 39-84 (miraculously only the 3rd worst record in the league). Southlake and Winnipeg must REALLY suck. |
Michigan Marauders @ Blarney Drive Bandits |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | Bandits take 5 of 6. Game 5 was a wild one. Up 2-1 heading onto the bottom of the 8th the Maurader pen implodes to allow a 9-spot. |
Dondero Oaks @ DeWitt Tigers |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | DeWitt wins the series 5-1. |
Harper Woods Expos @ California Quakes |
|
---|---|
Series Summary: | California takes 5 of 6 from Harper Woods. |
