Dondero Oaks @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: It’s a battle between the 2nd and 3rd place teams in the AL West, but they are separated by 25 games in the standings, as Castle Rock sits at 70-59 and Dondero comes in at 45-84. They are both way behind Fort Worth, who is 14 games ahead of the Hounds in the standings.
Game #1: Without the services of Bonds available, the Hounds still manage to plate 8 runs on 7 hits and 6 walks, highlighted by a Dye triple. Pettitte pitches well and Dondero can’t get much going at the plate. The final is 8-1, Castle Rock.

WP: Pettitte (12-8)
LP: Acevedo (2-10)

Game #2: Pineiro and the bullpen hold Dondero to just one hit (a Jay Gibbons single) for the whole game and the Hounds bats continue to pour it on without Barry, as both Sweeney and Dye get 3 RBI and Sweeney goes 4-4, falling a triple short of the cycle. The final is 10-0, Castle Rock.

WP: Pineiro (7-4)
LP: Astacio (6-9)

Game #3: This is a closer one, as the game goes into extra innings behind strong starts from both Tomko and Doug Davis. Both teams have their chances, but the Oaks plate a run in the top of the 11th on a double play groundout and Choate is able to shut down the Hounds bats to get the victory. The final is 4-3.

WP: Choate (2-2)
LP: Matthews (5-4)

Game #4: The Castle Rock bats awake from their slumber and put across five runs in the first inning, highlighted by a Dye homer. This ends up being a really rough game for Dondero in many ways, as they lose Gibbons (10 days) and Monroe (27 days) to long-term injuries and Castle Rock piles on 22 runs on 25 hits and 8 walks. Dye goes 4-6, falling a homer short of the cycle. Sweeney goes 4-6 with 6 RBI and THREE HOMERS! All of this with Bonds only going 1-4 with three walks. The final is 22-4, Castle Rock as they clinch at least a series split.

WP: Burkett (16-7)
LP: Jarvis (8-13)

Game #5: Dondero loads the bases to start the game and gets two runs across in the first, but Castle Rock comes storming back to score 3 in the 2nd and 5 in the 3rd and runs away with a big victory again, 10-4. The bottom of the lineup got it done today, as Agbayani, Clayton and Barrett all had two RBI.

WP: Sanchez (4-1)
LP: Wilson (7-14)

Game #6: Dondero again jumps out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Castle Rock bats are just too much. The Hounds score 8 unanswered runs, keyed by homers from Bonds, Gonzalez and Sweeney and take the series finale by a 8-2 score.

WP: Carpenter (5-6)
LP: Acevedeo (2-11)

Series Summary: Castle Rock is pretty dominant in this one, winning 5 out of 6, with the one loss coming in extra innings. Not one of the games had someone earn a save, which is a fun little wrinkle. Two players could be up for hitter of the week for Castle Rock. Sweeney went 11/18 with 12 RBI, 3 doubles and five homers. Dye went 13/27 with 11 RBI, 3 doubles, 2 triples and a homer. Please confirm the stats, as that was just a quick review of box scores.

Michigan Marauders @ Danbury Mad Hatters

Series Preview: Will Danbury be able to retain theie 1/2 game lead over last place Michigan?
Series Summary: NOPE!    Danbury loses 4 of 6 and drops into the cellar.    Nothing spectacular from two unspectacular teams

Long Beach Titans @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview: Battle of bad teams Long Beach at Winnipeg.
Game #1: Long Beach 7 Winnipeg 4 Burrell and Caminiti homers.
Game #2: Ventura 4 hits and 5 rbis has a monster game and walks off the 11-10 Winnipeg win the 10th.

Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Hampton Huskies

Series Summary: Manhattan handles the Huskies pretty easily and take 4 of 6.

California Quakes @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Summary: Panthers win the first 5 and the Quakes won the last game in extra innings.

Southlake Stealers @ Chicago Demolition

Series Preview: Chicago is coming off a tough series against Fort Worth, but they look to get healthy against the South Lake Stealers. And they need to get healthy quick with Monroeville nipping their toes for first place.
The Steelers have called up reinforcements from the minor leagues this week and are going with a very controversial three-man rotation for this six-game series. Is this the new way of baseball or is sarge just a moron question mark.
Game #1: Pat Hentgen gets the ball in game one for the Steelers. He has a three and five record with a miniscule 2.79 era. He’s lost four of his last five starts due to zero run support. Kevin Millwood gets the nod for the Demolition as he is undefeated as are the boys from Chicago in his last five starts.

The Stealers strike first. After retiring the first two batters, Beltran singled to centerfield. This brought Matt LeCroy to the plate for his first at-bat of the season. What a way to start the year with a deep bomb to right field and a two to nothing lead.
They would extend the lead on a two run homer by David Eckstein in the fourth inning. Pat Hentgen would toss 5 no-hit innings before he was greeted by David Justice with a lead off double in the 6th. Phil Nevin would bang his 43rd homerun of the year to cut the lead in half, 4-2 end of the 6th inning.
Murray would lead off the bottom of the 8th with a double, forcing Sarge to call on Mahay out of the pen. He would walk the first two men he face loading the bases with no outs. Former Stealer Alomar had the chance to hurt his former teammates. Instead, Mahay got him to ground into a double play, scoring one run. The threat wasn’t over, as Justice strode to the plate. Mahay would get him thanks to a nice play at short by Eckstein.
Nen would do his job in the top of the 9th, bringing Chicago’s heart of the order up to bat. However, Mahay had no sweat on his brow, as he quickly dispatched the dangerous Chicago lineup. The tough Stealer Bullpen does the job again as the Stealers sealed their 17th one run game of the year.|

Final Score 4-3 Southlake

WP: Hentgen 4-5
LP: Millwood 7-10
S: Mahay 2

Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Matt Lecroy 2 Run HR in his first AB of the year.

Game #2: Former Stealer and current Demolition Ace Kile takes his 15 -5 record into the game against John Smoltz getting his 6th start of the season.
As you would expect this one was all about pitching. Both pitchers started out with ease. Chicago threatened in the bottom of the 5th when Alomar tried to score from second with two outs on a single to left field. But Juan Encarnacion had other ideas and gunned him down at the plate.
Chicago threatened again in the 7th inning. A towering pop up on the infield led to some confusion and the ball dropped in between 3 players. Higginson, now at first promptly stole second. Renteria would not be able to get the bunt down for out number 1. Justice would ground out to third also leaving Higgy at second. Magee also could not get the job done as he flew out to centerfield. Still tied end of 7th, 0-0.
Chicago once again threatened in the 9th. Delgado singled, followed by a line out from Johnson and a single by Higginson to put the winning run on 2nd base. Having faced 33 batters it seemed as if Sarge would call on his dependable pen, but instead he stayed with Smoltz. Chicago countered by bringing the switch hitter Tony Clark off the bench to give them the right/left match-up. Clark would fly out to left field. Smoltz would then get Justice to line to third to keep the game scoreless going into extra innings.
Both starters had heated conversations with their skippers and both came out for the 10th inning. Both did the job leaving the game scoreless through 10. This was followed by more heated talks as both starters convinced their skippers to let them continue. After each side was retired 1-2-3, it was still scoreless after 11.
Kile had a 1-2-3 inning in the 12th. Higgy would lead off the bottom of the 12th with a single and steal second. A sac bunt by Hocking would put him on third. Sarge elected to intentionally walk David Justice in hopes of setting up the double play on Canseco. Facing his 45th batter of the night, Smoltz simply had nothing left in the tank. Canseco sent a 2-1 hanging curveball into left center to bring home higgy and end the night with fireworks for the home team.
Final Score 1-0 Chicago 12 inningsWP: Kile 16-5
LP: Smoltz 3-3Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Kile 12 IP, 3 Hits, No Runs, No walks, 9 Ks and absolutely going to win Pitcher of the week again.
Game #3: After 12 grueling innings last night both teams limped into the stadium tonight for game three. Chicago without Clemens who is on the DL go with Coco in just his second start of the season. Stealers counter with their up and down ace Scot Schoeneweis.
Schoeneweis got rocked as the first 7 Demolition boys reached base thanks to 3 hits and 4 walks. Before he could get the third out Chicago had plated 6 runners. His nightmare was far from over though as he gave up 5 more runs on 7 hits and an error in the second. The score was Demolition 11, Stealers 2 after 2 innings.
Sarge would eventually take mercy after Scott had given up his 12th hit on the day in the 4th. The bullpen would yield two more runs in the 6th. Coco would only last into the fifth but former Stealer Graves came in to shut down his ex-teammates, picking up hjs 6th win on the season.
Final Score: 13 – 3 ChicagoWP: Graves 6-4
LP: Schoeneweis 11-7Big Boy Restaurants’ Big Boy of the Game: Hocking 3/4 , 2 R, 3 RBIs, a homerun and a walk
Game #4: The Stealers bring back game one winner Hentgen on short rest to see if he can turn the tide after two tough losses. Chicago countered with Arrojo who was roughed up by the Oaks in his last start but has been down on the farm re-working his delivery.

Southlake would get the scoring started in the 4th with a solo shot by Encarnacion. Chicago would answer in the fifth when Alomar swung back at his former team with a two run shot.
With two outs in the 6th Wooten singled bringing up Encarnacion again. The Chicago analytics staff said we aint trying this again and called for Cruz out of the pen. Juan sent one deep but a few feet too short. Nelson did his job.
After Nelson, Chicago went to Rhoades who was able to close out the game for the Demolition. It seems his time down in Triple A was all Arrojo needed to fix his woes.

Final Score 2-1 Chicago

WP: Arrojo 8-6
LP: Hentgen 4-6
S: Rhodes 11

Big Boy Restaurants Big Boy of the Game: Alomar with a two run homerun

Game #5: This was supposed to be a start by Smoltz, but after pitching into the twelfth inning a few days ago, his arm was hanging. The Stealers instead called on Terry Adams. The Demolition looked to veteran David Cone to keep the winning going.
Chicago would threaten in both the first and second thanks to 4 walks by Adams. However, they wouldn’t score until the finally got a hit in the third, a solo shot by Stewart. A double by Higgy in the 4th and a sac fly by Magee would make it 2-0.
A sac fly by Delgado in the fifth would add yet another run. Meanwhile Cone is masterful through 5, giving up just 2 hits, no runs and striking out 7 Stealers.
Cone would pick up two more Ks in the 6th and Chicago would add another run. This time on a Wendall Magee solo shot off Shuey. Cone wasn’t happy with 9 strike outs so he added 3 more as he went all 9 innings in a two hit shutout victory.
Final Score 4-0 ChicagoWP: Cone 6-3
LP: Adams 10-11Big Boy Restaurants Big Boy of the Game: David Cone Complete Game 2 Hit Shutout with 12Ks.
Game #6: Chicago has held Southlake to just 8 runs in five games with 39 strikeouts. Who will they call on to continue the domination? It will be game 1 starter Millwood. Meanwhile Southlake will try Schoeneweis again, who is still licking his wounds from earlier this series.
As in game one Lecroy would start the scoring with a basehit to bring Eckstein home. Beltran would also come home on a ground out by Encarnacion.
Schoeneweis had better results this time around. He would give up three hits and two walks but no runs to start the game. Glover took his place in the 4th to keep the score 2-0 Southlake.
Millwood would settle down after the rough first inning. Giving up just two more hits while striking out 6 before he was pulled with 1 out in the 6th inning. Southlake looked like they would add a run in the 6th off Cruz, but a great throw Stewart would nip Zeile at the plate.
Clark would start the 7th with a walk from Mahay. Marrero would pinch hit and double putting runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Sarge stayed with his lefty and Alomar singled scoring Clark. He then stole second putting the go ahead run in scoring position. Stewart would hit a ground ball to second, Anderson picked it clean and came to the plate to nab Marrero on a bang bang play. Nevin would then also ground out to Anderson, keeping the score 2-1 Stealers through 7.
A one out single by Beltran in the 8th would lead to Chicago calling on bullpen stud Nen. Instead of doushing the fire, he fanned it. He would hit Lecroy with the second pitch. Then he would yield a single to Wooten scoring Beltran and extending the Stealers lead to 3-1.
That lead would be short lived when Hocking hit a two run shot in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game.
Four singles in the bottom of the 9th off Leskanic would give Chicago the walk off victory. Two of the singles were infield hits. Why wouldn’t Sarge pull his reliever and at least go for the right/right matchup?
Final score 4-3 ChicagoWP: Rhodes 4-3
LP: Leskanic 3-4Big Boy Restaurants Big Boy of the Game: Hocking with a pinch hit 2 run HR
Series Summary: Chicago takes 5 of 6 games to maintain a 3-game lead in the Central Division. Southlake was dominated by the Chicago pitching, and they drop firmly into the basement.

WP – Williams (11-9)
LP – Van Poppel (1-3)

Game #3: Excellent, back-and-forth affair that saw the Mullets rally to tie the game in the 7th, the Crabs rally to tie the game in the 12th, with the Mullets finally prevailing in 13 innings. Alex Gonzalez was the unlikely offensive hero for Flora-Bama, with a double, homerun, and 3 RBIs. Chipper Jones and Tony Eusebio had clutch homeruns for Baltimore.

MULLETS 5 / 13 / 0
CRABS 4 / 10 / 0
WP – Sasaki (6-4)
LP – Looper (0-2)

Game #4: An instant classic for Baltimore fans as the Crabs come from behind 3 times to eke out a 10-9 win. The final blow was a Jimmy Rollins 2-run homerun in the 8th that provided the difference. Baltimore exploited one of Flora-Bama’s only weaknesses, Mike Piazza’s arm, to rack up 5 stolen bases (Rollins -2, McLemore – 2, Quinn – 1). Game #6: Jorge Posada had 3 hits and 2 RBIs, and Jimmy Rollins hit 2 homeruns propelling Baltimore to a series split. The Crabs jumped on Curt Schilling for 7 runs on 10 hits over 6 innings. Needing a win, Baltimore prevails, but at a huge cost, as 2 key members needed for a playoff push are lost for an extended period after colliding on a fly ball as Mark Mclemore (11 days) and Adam Dunn (25 days) hit the D.L.

MULLETS 5 / 6 / 1
CRABS 9 / 11 / 1
WP – Williams (12-9)
