Baltimore  Blue Crabs @ Manhattan  Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Blue Crabs come the Big Apple looking to stay in playoff hunt, Gas Hornets trying to get all their usage under their belt (and win). BUT – except for an E2 in the 6th inning of Game 4, we would have had a PERFECT GAME – but alas, it’s just a no-hitter….whose?
Game #1: Baltimore scores on Chipper Jones rbi single inthe 4th and a Jimmy Rollins triple in the 5th for a 2-0 lead. That lasts until Derek Jeter singles to open the 7th and Ray Durham follows with a triple, 2-1. But that’s all they got in the inning. Down to their last at-bats, Kyle Farnsworth on the hill for Baltimore, Matt Stairs singles, Rivas in to PR. Jeter singles, Durham singles Rivas home, Jeter to 3rd. Tino Martinez ends with a walk-off single and Gas Hornets grab the opener, 2-1.
FINAL MGH 2 BAL 1 WP Vladimir Nunez (5-2) LP Farnsworth (7-3) BS (6)
Game #2: After Manhattan gets on the board with 1 in the 4th, Baltimore responds with 3 in the 5th including a 2 run Tony Batista blast (16). But the Gas Hornets respond with 3 of their own in the bottom half capped by a 2 run Chris Singleton triple. Baltimore ties it up at 4-4 in the 6th but then Manhattan seals the deal with 4 runs in the bottom half – Bubba Trammel keying it with his own 2 run triple (3 rbis on the day).
FINAL MGH 8 BAL 4 WP Mike Williams (2-0) BS (2) LP Mike Venafro
Game #3: Anyone like free baseball – beer vendors and fans! Well, settle in, you get it in this one.
Baltimore jumps out to a 4-0 lead with 2 in the 1st, 1 in the 3rd and another in the 5th. Chipper Jones singles in 2 in the 1st and homers (41) in the 3rd and a Sean Casey rbi single in the 5th. Manhattan chippers away with 2 in the 5th, Ron Coomer rbi triple followed by a Dave Martinez rbi double. Derek Jeter singles in 1 in the 8th and then after some nifty baserunning by Delino DeShields in the 9th, Garrett Anderson ties it with a SF, 4-4 and we’re off to free land.
4 innings of free baseball. Baltimore gets the 1st extra time run when Presont Wilson draws a 1 out walk, with 2 outs, he steals 2nd and scores on a Dmitri Young single, 5-4 Baltimore. Kyle Farnworth goes back to the hill in the 13th for his 4th inning of relief. He’s been brilliant so far – and it last for 1 more inning as he retires Manhattan in order to seal the win for the Crabs.
FINAL BAL 4 MGH 3 WP Farnsworth (8-3) BS Mike Stanton (3) LP Jeff Shaw (2-4) 13 innings.
Game #4: Tino Martinez homers (28) and doubles. Chris Singleton gets 3 hits, scores twice, drives in 1 and the Gas Hornets get 2 other runs. In the 6th, with 1 out, “MORRIS with the pitch … a healthy cut by CASEY … but he sends it straight up KENDALL flings his mask aside … he’s in fair ground … and the ball hits off his mitt! it rolls away … but MORRIS is there … and CASEY is on at first that play was tougher than it looked … Jason KENDALL takes the E”. Yup, Sean Casey was the only batter to reach base for Baltimore as Matt Morris was so close to perfection. 4 ks, no walks, NO-HITTER!!
FINAL
BAL 0-0-1 LP Tim Hudson (9-17)
MGH 4-8-1 WP Matt Morris (15-8)
Game #5: So, how do you follow a no-hitter? Well Baltimore followed it with 8 hits! And 4 runs! Kevin Young homers (7) for 2 in the 4th and Chipper Jones drives in 1 in a 2 run 7th. And that was more than needed as Woody Williams tried to match Morris game 4 feat. He tosses a 2 hitter, 2 walks, 5 ks NO RUNS!! CG Shutout!
FINAL BAL 4 MGH 0 WP Williams (13-9) LP Halama (5-3)
Series Summary: Manhattan manages a 3-2 series win with the biggie being the no-hitter (near perfect) from Matt Morris in game 4. Manhattan goes back on the road and back to Hampton for 5 (there last week as well). Baltimore gets to do the Flora-Bama trip.

1Chicago Demolition
Monroeville Maulers

Series Preview: A much anticipated series between the AL Central division leading Chicago Demolition hoping to apply the wrecking ball and topple Hammer & Steel Stadium as the 2nd place Maulers hot on their tail, hope to continue to live up to their name sake and “Hammertime” the Chicago pitching staff. It’ll take some quality starts from the Maulers hurlers as well to come out ahead in this series. Enough said, Let’s roll!
Game #1: Jason Schmidt vs Darryl Kile and the Demolition pound out 10 hits against the Mauler 2nd in command and hold on for a 4-2 victory as Kile quiet’s the Mauler bats scattering 6 hits.

Frank Catalanotto 2-3, 2B(24)
Game #2: Pedro Martinez vs Willis Roberts seems to be a bit of a mismatch but Roberts is up for the challenge however in a losing effort scattering 8 hits and 2-runs both solo home runs as the “Hammering” time bats just couldn’t get it going against “el Grande”. A nail bitter indeed. RBI 100 for Carlos Delgado.
CHI 2-1

However the Demolition chip away making it close but fall short by 1 run 6-5, and Jon Lieber picks up his 15th win. Roger Clemens got hit early and often survived 4IP and Danny Graves was up to the task in long relief to give CHI a chance but the Maulers plate one more for the victory.

Game #4: Maulers call upon Brian Tollberg to try and even the series facing Rolando Arrojo both with comparable records. The Demolition apply the wrecking ball and waste no time plating 6 runs in the first to a disgusted Brian Tollberg and Mauler fanfare. The Hammering time lineup attempt a comeback chasing Matt Anderson in relief but the Demolition firemen Vosberg, Nen, and Zimmerman put out the flames, as the Demolition plate 2 more for insurance.

Game #5: The Maulers save face and pickup the final game on the arm of Julian Tavarez CG shutout scattering 8 hits. As the wrecking ball spit and sputter and couldn’t’ get started. The Maulers plate two for the victory although the hammering time bats where only found via a Doug Mientkiewicz solo shot and an RBI 2B by Frank Catalanotto.
MVM 2-0
W- Julian Tavarez 14-10

The Demolition still have the edge overall but the Maulers hung tight with them the best they could solidifying their wild card position with 2 wins and at least not any worse. Roberto Alomar had a good series at the plate 8-22 BA.363 BB-1 RS-3 RBI-2. Maulers play errorless in the field.
