Chicago Demolition @ Dondero Oaks

Series Preview: First place Chicago heads to struggling Dondero for 6 games. Chicago looks to grow their division lead as Dondero tries to build on a series win against Iowa last week.
Game #1: All Chicago the whole game. The Demolition plate 15 runs as Dondero couldn’t get anyone out. They did it all without a single home run but plenty of hits, walks, and hit batters. Charles Johnson had 3 hits, 2 of which were doubles. The shocking thing, those were the only 2 extra base hits for Chicago the entire game. Roger Clemens went 6 innings giving up just 1 run.

Chicago 15
Dondero 1

W: R. Clemens (8-8)
L: M. Wise (1-5)

Game #2: Chicago dominates again but this time with plenty of extra base pop. 5 home runs for the Demolition shows that they can do it in any capacity. Phil Nevin had 2 with 5 RBIs, Bobby Higginson, David Justice, and Charles Jonhson also added home runs of their own. Kevin Millwood was spectacular going 7 scoreless on just 3 hits and 2 walks.

Chicago 9
Dondero 2

W: K. Millwood (7-9)
L: J. Jennings (1-4)

Game #3: Another big win for Chicago. Phil Nevin continues to shine in the series with another home run to go with 3 total hits and 4 RBIs. Edgar Renteria also had a solo shot as the Chicago bats cannot be stopped by the Dondero pitching staff.

Chicago 8
Dondero 5

W: J. Speier (3-0)
L: J. Santana (6-7)
S: B. Wagner (2)

Game #4: Pedro Martinez made sure to guarantee a Chicago series win with 8 innings of 1 run ball on an Andres Galarraga solo home run. On the offensive side Phil Nevin had his 4th home run of the series and another 3 RBI. Bobby Higginson and Tony Clark both got homers as well. It has been pure domination.

Chicago 6
Dondero 1

W: P. Martinez (11-3)
L: K. Jarvis (6-12)

Game #5: Phil Nevin was hitless! But it doesn’t matter because Chicago is just still better. Darryl Kile got the start for the Demolition and gave up 2 runs over 7 innings. Roberto Alomar was the start on offense for Chicago getting 4 RBIs on 3 hits including a home run.

Chicago 7
Dondero 2

W: D. Kile (13-4)
L: P. Wilson (6-11)

Game #6: The final game of the series saw Chicago complete the sweep. Roger Clemens got the win for the 2nd time this series with a 6.2 innings performance giving up just 1 on a 1st inning single by Galarraga. Again, Chicago scored often with home runs from Shannon Stewart and Charles Johnson. None of these games were really ever in doubt.

Chicago 9
Dondero 1

W: R. Clemens (9-8)
L: M. Wise (1-6)

Series Summary: 6 games, 6 Chicago wins. This makes it 16 in a row for Chicago as they are currently a freight train. Dondero is back to their old ways of losing big as they have the 2nd worst record in the AL still. Chicago will host Castle Rock next week as Dondero heads to Harper Woods.

Valdosta Bombers @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview: Valdosta was looking to add to their playoff chances facing an aging Winnipeg team just hoping to reach the season end.

Series Summary: Valdosta wins 4 of the 6 games.
POW – Kennedy 9 innings 6 hits 1 walk 10 K’s
Hitter Bobby Abreu

Long Beach Titans @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: Two forgotten teams meet up secretly to complete their series hoping no one is watching to avoid embarrassment.
Game #1: Carlos Lee hit his 15th homer of the season and drove in four runs to propel the Titans to an 11-7 win over the Huskies. The top four hitters for Long Beach had 10 hits in the game with 4 by Jose Video. Derrek Lee (15) homered and had two singles for Hampton and also drove in three runs. The pitching was pretty much universally a horror show in this game.
Game #2: Marcus Giles had a pinch hit RBI single with one out in the bottom of the 11th inning to lift Hampton to a 2-1 win over Long Beach. Brian Lawrence pitched well for Long Beach striking out six in 7.2 innings with the lone run off him coming on a Ricky Gutierrez (9) home run in the 1st inning. Freddy Garcia did pretty much the same for Hampton with four hits allowed including a solo homer to Ken Caminiti (8) with four strikeouts. In a prelude of things to come the lousy fielding Hampton team committed three errors in this game.
Game #3: Barry Zito struck out eight in seven shutout innings as the Huskies beat the Titans 3-0. Zito (12-9) walked two and gave up five singles in the contest. A bit of a bloodletting in this game with Jose Video getting plonked by a pitch that knocked him out for 8 days while Marcus Giles (22) and JD Drew (11) collided chasing a fly ball to send each of them to the DL.
Game #4: Gary Matthews Jr. blasted a solo homer with two out in the bottom of the 10th to give the Huskies the 5-4 win. Carlos Guillen went down to injury for five days in this one. A frustrating day for the Titans who had no trouble finding their power stroke but failed to otherwise get runners on base at the right time. Tyler Houston (9), Brad Fulllmer (17) and Chad Kreuter (8) homered for the Titans.
Game #5: In a gloves optional game, the Hampton Huskies bozos committed seven errors (is that a record?) in a 16-5 gutting at the hands of Long Beach. Carlos Lee was the big kahuna with four hits including a double and a homer and drove in six runs. Brian Buchanan (7) and Ken Caminiti (9) also hit home runs as part of the 18-hit attack. The terrible fielding was epidemic as a gaffe was committed by everyone that played infield in the game plus one pitcher (sort of) – Rusty Meacham.
Game #6: Adam Eaton tossed a four-hit shutout in a 9-0 win over the Titans. Eaton (2-3) walked just one while striking out five in the game. Julio Lugo (3), Derrek Lee (16) and Steve Cox (7) homered for Hampton.
Series Summary: Hampton wins four of six vs Long Beach … yay.

Harper Woods Expos @ Corktown Bootleggers

Series Summary: Split for the 2 teams this week. Final 2 games went 12 and 11 innings.

Castle Rock Hounds @ Iowa Giants

Series Preview: With Iowa unable to make the series, Castle Rock plays the rare road series to see if they can help out their spot in the wild card standings.
Game #1: Iowa jumps all over Kyle Lohse and doesn’t look back, taking the series opener by a 9-5 score. Gonzalez hits two homers for Iowa and Maddux goes the distance in the victory. Iowa does lose Kotsay in the loss.

WP: Maddux (14-3)
LP: Lohse (5-8)

Game #2: John Burkett tosses a gem for the Hounds, going the full 9 innings, allowing just 3 hits and two walks and 0 runs. The Castle Rock offense does enough, getting three runs on five hits off of Sele, including a Bonds HR (#41). The final is 3-0, Castle Rock and the series is tied at 1-1.

WP: Burkett (14-5)
LP: Sele (6-9)

Game #3: This one goes into extra innings, with the Hounds coming out on top in the 12th. Bonds hits two more homers (42 and 43) and the usually shaky Castle Rock bullpen goes 5.2 IP without allowing a run in relief of Carpenter. The final is 4-2, Castle Rock.

WP: Pineiro (5-3)
LP: Guardado (1-5)

Game #4: The Hounds bats jump all over Coggin, Ginter and Stark for Iowa as the Hounds put together 13 runs on 12 hits and 6 walks. Dye, Bonds (44) and Petrick go deep for Castle Rock, while Damon and Grace do the same for Iowa. Pettitte does enough to get the W for Castle Rock, going 7 IP and allowing 4 runs. The final is Castle Rock, 13-6 and they now have a 3-1 series lead.

WP: Pettitte (9-7)
LP: Coggin (3-3)

Game #5: Castle Rock’s bats continue their torrid pace, as they plate another 10 runs in this one, including four homers from Bonds (45), Gonzalez (34), Dye (20) and Polanco (3). Doug Davis gets knocked around for the Hounds, but spreads out the damage, allowing only four runs on 11 hits. Iowa gets 16 hits, but 14 were singles. Castle Rock wns 10-6 and takes the 4-1 series lead.

WP: Davis (9-5)
LP: Davis (2-9)

Game #6: It’s another slugfest for Castle Rock, as they score 14 runs on 16 hits and win the series finale 14-1. Bonds hits another homer (46), his sixth in the series and Lohse and Pineiro combine to hold off the Iowa bats, who got their only run from a Grace solo HR in the 1st.

WP: Lohse (6-8)
LP: Burba (2-1)

Series Summary: After losing the series opener, Castle Rock roars back to take the next five games and win the series 5-1. Bonds angling for another Player of the Week nod with six homers in the series.

Michigan Marauders @ Baltimore Blue Crabs

Series Preview: The Michigan Marauders (43-62), 4th place N.L. Central, visit Baltimore (57-48), 3rd place N.L. East, as the Blue Crabs try to stay in the playoff hunt.
Game #1: With a pair of 5-run innings, Michigan blasts Baltimore 12-2 in the opener. Bret Boone went 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs, and Chris Richard had 2 doubles, a homerun, and 3 RBIs to lead the Marauders’ 17-hit attack.

MARAUDERS 12 / 17 / 1
CRABS 2 / 7 / 4
WP – Clement (6-6)
LP – Suppan (7-8)

Game #2: Michigan pounces on Baltimore starter Tim Hudson for 4 1st inning runs, but that is all the Marauders would get. The Crabs would battle back, with Tony Batista’s 5th inning, 3-run homerun the big blast. Preston Wilson and Dmitry Young also went deep for Baltimore. Bret Boone homered for Michigan.

MARAUDERS 4 / 5 / 0
CRABS 8 / 9 / 0
WP – Hudson (8-12)
LP – Hernandez (4-7)
S – Santos (1)

Game #3: B.J. Surhoff had a good day at the plate, with a single, double, homerun, and 3 runs scored, but he drops Randy Winn’s 2-out fly ball in the 10th, allowing pinch-runner Kevin Young to score the game-winner, and the Crabs prevail 6-5. Dmitry Young and Preston Wilson each had 3 hits for Baltimore.

MARAUDERS 5 / 11 / 3
CRABS 6 / 10 / 1
WP – Stanton (6-1)
LP – White (2-1)

Game #4: Baltimore takes a 6-0 lead after 5, but 4 Michigan relievers would hold Baltimore hitless the rest of the way, allowing Michigan to battle back. The Marauders would score 7 in the 7th, 5 of the runs unearned, and win 10-6. Shane Halter had a single, a pair of triples, and 3 RBIs for the Marauders.

MARAUDERS 10 / 14 / 1
CRABS 6 / 8 / 2
WP – T. Jones (1-2)
LP – Looper (0-1)

Game #5: Tony Batista comes through with a 3-run shot in the bottom of the 8th, capping a 4 RBI day, to win it for Baltimore. Cal Ripken went 3 for 3 with a double and homerun for Michigan.

MARAUDERS 3 / 10 / 1
CRABS 6 / 10 / 0
WP – Worrell (1-3)
LP – White (2-2)
S – Farnsworth (15)

Game #6: Baltimore rides and 8-run 1st inning, surviving a valiant Michigan comeback attempt to win the finale 13-9. Tony Batista hit 2 more homeruns, and Jorge Posada and Jimmy Rollins also went deep for the Crabs. Bret Boone had 4 hits, including a homerun for the Marauders.

MARAUDERS 9 / 15 / 0
CRABS 13 / 17 / 2
WP – Suppan (8-8)
LP – Clement (6-7)

Series Summary: Baltimore survives a barrage of Michigan hits to win 4 of 6.

California Quakes @ DeWitt Tigers

Series Summary: Dewitt takes 4 of 6 from California.

Monroeville Maulers @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Preview: Monroeville 61-44 vs Ft. Worth 67-38. The Maulers have gone 7-3 in their last 10 with a 25-20 road record. The Panthers are 30-11 at home and have won 6 of their last 10 games.
Game #1: Panthers score two in the first on a 1-out 2 RBI triple by Rich Aurilia, but the Maulers would score 4 times in the 8th highlighted by a 2-run homer by Doug Mientkiewicz. Monroeville had 8 steals against one of the Panthers backup catchers.
Final Score: Maulers 7, Panthers 4
Game #2: Ft. Worth jumped ahead 7-0 before Monroeville scored 5 times in the 7th to make it close. Five Maulers had 2 hits while Doug Glanville lead the way for the Panthers with 4 hits – 2 doubles and a homer. He also got his 21st steal of the year.
Final Score: Panthers 8, Maulers 5
Game #3: The difference in this game was a three-run homer by Daryle Ward for the Maulers in the 2nd.
Final Score: Maulers 5, Panthers 2
Game #4: Pitchers duel until the bottom of the 8th when Aramis Ramirez doubles home 3 for the Panthers.
Final Score: Panthers 4, Maulers 1
Game #5: Ft. Worth scores 6 times in the first highlighted by another 2 RBI triple by Aurilia – his 8th and Panther starter Hideo Nomo was able to coast from there to improve to 14-4 even though he allowed a three-run homer to Troy Glaus.
Final Score: Panthers 10, Maulers 4
Game #6: After a two-run homer in the top of the first by Frank Catalanotto it was all Ft. Worth led by Rondell White’s 3 for 5, two RBI performance with a double and a home run.
Final Score: Panthers 5, Maulers 2
Series Summary: Panthers take the series 4 games to 2.

Danbury Mad Hatters @ Hollywood Vampires

Series Summary: Hollywood takes 4 of 6, but should have split the series, but scored 2 in the bottom of the 9th with 1 out in the last game of the series.

Gladstone Gladiators @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: NL Central Leader Gladstone comes to the Big Apple for a 6-pack (and baseball). Records are similar, however, Gladiators are working on maintaining “comfortable” lead over Valdosta and Gas Hornets are still looking up at Flora-Bama.
No-HITTER Alert this week!
Game #1: After all-star game tickets were settled, Ron Villone makes his 1st Gladiators start of the season. Gas Hornets licking their lips and after giving up run in the 1st, they put a 5 spot on Villone in the 2nd. He leaves – then Gladiators score 6 in the 5th to take a 7-5 lead. Which is flipped in the bottom half when Manhattan scores 4 times. Then the Glads add 2 to their total in the top of the 6th – 9-9 TIE! Well, only until Gas Hornets plate 3 in bottom of the 6th for 12-9 lead. And then zeroes the rest of the way. Ben Grieve (6) with a homer for Gladstone, Garrett Anderson (16) for the good guys.
FINAL MGH 12-9 WP Maduro (4-2) S Kim (20) LP Pote (0-1)
Game #2: Rick Reed scatters 8 hits in CG shutout in game 2. Tino Martinez (19) homers and home town fans are happy. Former Gas Hornet Benito Santiago gets 3 of the Gladstone hits.
FINAL MGH 5-0 WP Reed (13-3) LP Park (6-7)
Game #3: Gladstone used a 4 run 3rd to propel themselves int the winner’s circle. Manhattan fought back with 3 in the bottom half, but a 2 run O’Leary triple in the 5th salted it away. Russ Ortiz gave up 1 in the 7th, leaves, but bullpen saves the day. Tough news for Gas Hornets when Chris Latham crashes into wall making a great catch – 20 days worth of injury and a trip to the DL (back in September).
Corie Koskie (18) homers for Gladiators, Anderson (17) slugs another for Manhattan.
FINAL GLA 6-4 WP Ortiz (9-8) S Rodriguez (31) LP Sparks (11-4)
Game #4: Matt Morris finally gets some support – enough even to win. Of course tossing a NO-HITTER will work wonders!! [OK – dumb comment, I hadn’t even noticed it was NO-HITTER until doing the write-up. Yes, I PLAYED the game, 5 minutes worth. Maybe it was a good thing as I didn’t jinx it.] A HBP and an error keeps it from being a PERFECT game, 29 BF! Matt Stairs provided half the runs with a solo homer (15) and RBI single.
FINAL MGH 4-0 WP Morris (11-7) LP Javier Vazquez (14-4)
Game #5: Funny game? Well for a while. Gladiators open with 4 runs in the 1st of Tim Wakefield. We get 1 back then 4 of our own in the 3rd. Then we lose the lead when Gladstone plates 2 in the 5th but we tie it in the 8th. Then both teams struggle to the 13th where Grieve walks with 1 out but he’s still on 1st with 2 outs. So Grieve steals 2nd (3rd of the year – what the heck, why not). Benito Santiago then singles scores Grieve. Relaford into PR and he steals second and scores on a Ray Ordonez rbi double (he goes 1 for 6 – why now?). Chad Zerbe then comes in to pitch the bottom of the 12th (era high 5s) and gives up a single and nothing else to preserve the Gladstone extra inning win!
FINAL 8-6 GLA 13 innings WP Dave Williams (9-4), S Zerbe (1) LP Jeff Shaw (2-3)
Game #6: The finale pits Ron Villone vs. Brandon Duckworth for a rematch of game 1. This one was not as volitile. 1 run on a Desi Relaford single in the 2nd, 2 for Manhattan in the 2nd, Ricky Henderson 2 run single and 2 runs in the 3rd on a Garrett Anderson (18) homer. That was it.
FINAL 4-1 MGH WP Duckworth (4-2) S Mike Willams (1) LP Villone (0-1)
Series Summary: In a series with a 13 inning game, a no-hitter, 2 shutouts, the Gas Hornets come away with the 4-2 series win.

Blarney Drive Bandits @ Flora-Bama Mullets

Series Preview: The high scoring Bandits visit the Mullets who are looking to rebound after a rough series last week.
Game #1: Prokopec vs. Person
The Bandits pounded out 13 hits and scored 11 runs. Little led the way with three hits.
W – Prokopec 3-4
L – Person 14-6
Blarney Drive 11-2
Game #2: Wells vs. Leiter
Berkman started and finished the game with a homer as Flora-Bama blew two three run leads, but ultimately walked it off 7-6 in the 10th.
W – Sasaki 4-3
L – Weathers 5-4
Flora-Bama 7-6
Game #3: Hampton vs. Burnett
Bell rbi single in 2nd gave the Mullets an early lead. Burnett walked the bases loaded in 3rd, but got out of it with only one run on a sac fly. Hampton gave up a solo homer to Berkman and then allowed three more runs in 3rd. Mulltets added three more in the 4th to go up 8-1. Burnett gave up his first hit of game in the 5th. He stayed in the game until the 8th due to the large lead which allowed his ERA to creep back above 7. Mesa closed it out.
W – Burnett 11-6
L – Hampton
S – Mesa #8
Flora-Bama 8-6
Game #4: Johnson vs. Schilling
Sold out game at Pensacola stadium to the see the two aces. Little led the charge again as the Bandits jumped on Schilling for 3 runs in the 1st. Green solo in 3rd. Hunter took Johnson deep for a two run homer in 4th but that was all the Mullets could get on him. Hernandez rbi double in the 6th chased Schilling and then the Bandits beat up on the Mullets pen the rest of the way.
W – Johnson 18-1
L – Schilling 11-10
Blarney Drive 11-2
Game #5: Reitsma vs. Person
Bell rbi single in 2nd and Liefer solo in 4th gave the Mullets 2-0 lead. Veras rbi double and a fielders choice tied it in 6th. A squeeze play in the 8th caught the Mullets napping and gave the Bandits the first lead of the game. Kennedy’s solo tied it in bottom of the 8th. Hernandez rbi single in the 11th gave the Bandits the 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 11th, Groom allowed Hunter and Haselman to single and then served up a walk-off three run homer to Bell.
W – Sasaki 5-3
L – Groom 1-3
Flora-Bama 6-4 11th
Game #6: Prokopec vs. Leiter
Olerud and Hunter each hit two run homers to give the Mullets a 4-0 lead in the 1st. Olerud doubled in two more in the 2nd. In the 4th, Leiter accidently hit a batter and was ejected. Berkman had already been hit twice by the visitors, so the Mullets manager had some choice words for the Umpire. The pen came on and shut things down the rest of the way except for a Spivey solo homer in 8th.
W – Zambrano 1-1
L – Prokopec 3-6
S – Sasaki #17
Flora-Bama 6-2
Series Summary: The Bandits outscored the Mullets in the series, but dropped the final two games to give the Mullets the overall 4-2 series win. It also could have easily been 2-4 if the Bandits pen could have held on in the two extra inning games. Berkman edged out Little for the player of the series.

Southlake Stealers @ Houghton Penguins
