Iowa Giants @ Southlake Stealers – Rain Make Up Game

Series Preview: A makeup from an earlier rainout will pit Sele against Finley.
Game #1: The Stealers called on early BP for the team against the crafty veteran Sele. They load up the line-up with nearly all lefties to take advantage of the match ups. But the Iowa skipper threw a curveball of his own. Instead of Sele it was the lefty Bud Smith who toed the rubber for the Giants.

What a stroke of genius it was, as Bud easily dispatched of the left-handed lineup giving up no runs on 3 hits over 8 innings to secure his first victory of the year.

Manager Sarge Stauffer of Southlake called it something different than genius. “I’ve seen some bush league moves before but that may take the cake. We were not informed of the change until the lineup exchange. Total Crap in my book. Next time we meet, his boys better put a chin strap on those helmets because I have a feeling we are going to be wild with our control that day.”

Mark Grace supplied the firepower for the Giants going 2/4 including a solo homerun and scoring 3 times on the day.

WP: Bud Smith (1-3)
LP: Finley (5-10)
Big Boy Restaurant’s Big Boy of the Game: Mark Grace

Series Summary: Iowa takes the make up game.

Arroyo struck out several batters and managed to keep the Quakes from scoring despite multiple threats. The decisive moment came in the bottom of the 9th inning when Carlos Delgado walked and advanced to third on a double by Charles Johnson. With the bases loaded, David Justice hit a deep fly to right field, allowing Delgado to tag up and score the winning run. Arroyo earned the win, improving his record to 7-6 with a 3.61 ERA, while Jones took the loss, falling to 1-8 with a 4.57 ERA.

Final Score: Chicago 1 – California 0

Win: Rolando Arroyo 7-6 (3.61)
Loss: Bobby J. Jones 1-8 (4.57)

Game #6: The Chicago Demolition dominated the California Quakes with a decisive 5-0 victory. Darryl Kile was outstanding on the mound, improving his record to 12-4 with a 3.11 ERA. He kept the Quakes’ hitters at bay, allowing no runs through nine innings. Tomo Ohka took the loss for the Quakes, dropping to 5-11 with a 5.23 ERA. The Demolition’s offense came alive in the third inning when Phil Nevin hit a three-run homer, giving them an early lead. They extended their lead in the fifth inning with two more runs, thanks to timely hitting from Stewart and Alomar. The Quakes struggled to generate any offense, with Kile’s pitching proving too much to handle. The Demolition’s defense was also solid, turning key double plays to stifle any potential rallies. Overall, it was a comprehensive performance by Chicago, showcasing both their pitching and hitting prowess.

The Quakes managed to challenge the Demolition in a few close games, but Chicago’s consistent performance, including a 1-0 win secured by Rolando Arroyo and a 3-2 victory with Pedro Martinez on the mound, proved too much. Overall, the Demolition’s balanced attack and solid defense were pivotal in their sweep of the series.

Iowa Giants @ Dondero Oaks

Series Preview: Iowa 1 game under .500 (49-50) heads to lowly Dondero sporting a record 40 games under .500 (29-69) for 6 games. It is a good opportunity for Iowa to see if they have a late run in them.

Iowa 3

W: M. Wise (1-4)
L: C. Lidle (7-5)
S: M. Rivera (14)

Game #3: This game was a thriller as neither starter had their best stuff. Jennings gave up 6 and couldn’t get through 3 innings, as Biddle was rolling until a 5 run 5th. Iowa 6

W: G. Carrara (2-1)

Johan Santana gave up just 1 run over 7 innings even though Jose Offerman was a thorn in the side of Dondero also going 4/5 but with all singles.

Dondero 9
Iowa 1

W: J. Santata (6-6)
L: L. Davis (2-8)

Game #5: This game was a shock because Jeff Weaver came out for his warmups in the 1st and instantly needed to be removed due to an injury. 1 early run for Dondero in the 2nd and the game felt very quiet. In the top of the 6th Iowa got an RBI single from Marty Cordova and it felt like this game was going to come down to the wire. However, Dondero ended up scoring 12 runs over the next 3 innings and had another 16 hit game. 5 home runs in total, 2 from Dante Bichette and then Sanders, Bengie Molina, and Cesar Izturis each having one. Iowa 1

W: K. Jarvis (6-11)
L: R. Garves (3-6)

Game #6: Iowa got themselves back in the win column in a shut down game. They scored 1 in the 1st and that was all that was needed. Iowa 6
Dondero 0

W: B. Smith (2-3)
L: P. Wilson (6-10)
S: E. Guardado (15)

Series Summary: In a shocker of a series Dondero takes 4 of 6 from Iowa. The series really hurts Iowa’s chances at making a late playoff push and Dondero continues to just wait for next season to see if there is any momentum going forward.

LP: Pettitte (8-7)

Game #5: Castle Rock commits errors on the first two plays of the game, leading to two unearned runs for Houghton in the 1st. In the 9th, Castle Rock gets two runners on base (Clayton gets plunked and is out for 15 games) and Dotel is tossed from the game. DeJean and Benitez toss scoreless innings to preserve the 6-5 victory for Castle Rock and split the series 3-3.

Hampton Huskies @ Gladstone Gladiators

Series Preview: The NL Central Division leading Gladiators host the NL East Division Huskies.
Game #1: The Huskies start out strong, scoring 1 in the 1st and 2 in the 2nd, holding onto a 3-0 lead until the 6th inning. Gladstone finally got on the board with a pair in the bottom of the 6th. Hampton added an insurance run in the top of the 8th, and looked like they were going to prevail. But Gladstone had other ideas, and mounted their counter-attack in the bottom of the 9th. Michael Tucker led off with a walk and proceeded to steal 2nd. Ben Grieve followed with a single, and Tucker advanced to 3rd, electing to play it safe with a 2-run deficit. Juan Uribe pinch-hit for Mike Defilice and singled in Tucker, moving Grieve to 2nd. Rey Ordonez walked to load the bases, still with nobody out. The Gladiators’ leadoff hitter then singled to drive in Grieve and Uribe, and that was the ballgame.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 5 – HAM 4
Game #2: This one was all Gladstone from the start, as they pounded out 7 runs (only 4 earned) off of Darren Dreifort through his 4 innings of work. He was removed in the bottom of the 5th with nobody out after giving up the last pair of runs. That was all Gladstone needed, as Hampton only managed a pair of runs throughout the game.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 7 – HAM 2
Game #3: Freddy Garcia went the distance for Hampton, but his offense only managed a single run of support in the 5th. Gladstone tied it in the bottom of the 5th, and then added a pair in the bottom of the 8th to hand Garcia the hard-luck loss.

Game #4: Hampton got off to another good start with a pair of runs in the 2nd. Gladstone couldn’t solve Barry Zito until the 6th, when they narrowed the lead to 2-1. Then in the 7th, they added 3 more to chase Zito, and Hampton couldn’t manage any further offensive output.
FINAL SCORE: GLG 4 – HAM 2
Game #5: Gladstone took the early lead with a 4-run 4th, and Hampton couldn’t solve Javier Vazquez, except for a brief hiccup in the 6th.
