California Quakes @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: It’s a battle of old division rivals, as the Quakes visit Castle Rock. This looks like it might be a down year for California, but you never know until you play the games.
Game #1: It’s a battle of 3 grade starters, as Lohse takes the hill for Castle Rock and Benes for California. Surprisingly, it is a pretty decently pitched game and it is 4-4 heading into the 9th inning. It takes until the 11th inning for Castle Rock to walk it off with a Michael Barrett RBI single to score pinch-runner Wilton Guerrero from 3rd. The final is 5-4, Castle Rock as they take the series opener.

WP: Pineiro (2-0)
LP: Julio (0-1)

Game #2: It’s Pettitte vs. Borowski in Game 2, with the pitching advantage going to Castle Rock in this one. Castle Rock jumps on Borowski early, plating three in the first. But, they don’t take advantage of other chances, and the game is close until the very end. Castle Rock ends up taking it by a score of 4-2, but California had the bases loaded in the 9th, but couldn’t get the clutch hit. Surprisingly low scoring games so far.

WP: Pettitte (2-1)
LP: Borowski (0-3)
S: DeJean (1)

Game #3: Another battle of not-so-good starters, as Ohka takes the hill for California and Doug Davis for Castle Rock. Salmon and Bellinger hit back-to-back homers in the top of the 2nd for California to give them a 2-0 edge. They pick up two more in the 3rd to make it 4-0. Luis Gonzalez finally solves Ohka, with a 2-run homer to cut the California lead in half. Castle Rock gets another in the 6th and Mike Sweeney breaks things open in the bottom of the 7th with a bases loaded triple to give Castle Rock a 6-4 lead. But, California is opportunistic, getting one back with an Alfonzo HR in the 8th. But, that is all that they could muster and the Hounds take this one by a 6-5 margin and take a 3-0 series lead.

WP: Bailey (1-0)
LP: Brohawn (0-1)
S: Benitez (1)

Game #4: The ace of the California staff, Randy Wolf (11) faces off against Chad Durbin (4) for Castle Rock. California jumps out to a quick 3-0 lead, spurred by an Ichiro lead-off triple. But, Castle Rock claws back into it, cutting the lead to 4-3 with a Bonds 2-run shot in the 5th. It is a tight one going into the bottom of the 9th, with California clinging to a one-run lead. Hoffman intentionally walks Bonds, the winning run, but gets out of the jam by getting Gant to fly out and California gets its first win of the series, 5-4.

WP: Wolf (2-1)
LP: Durbin (0-3)
S: Hoffman (3)

Game #5: Burkett vs. Parris in the series finale. Benny Agbayani gets Castle Rock on the board first with a two-run homer from the 9th spot in the order in the bottom of the 3rd. Sweeney pads the lead with a solo shot of his own to make it 3-0. But, Bellinger gives California life with a two-run shot in the top of the 5th. Bonds gets hit on the elbow in the 7th and is lost for three days, a tough blow to Castle Rock. In retribution, Dye delivers a triple to give Castle Rock a 6-2 lead. It is 7-2 going into the 9th and the Castle Rock bullpen falls apart, giving up four runs and bringing up Craig Grebeck with the tying run on 2nd and two outs. Castle Rock calls on Armando Benitez and California counters with a pinch-hitting Craig Osik. Benitez gets Osik to pop up to second and the final is 7-6, Castle Rock.

WP: Burkett (3-1)
LP: Parris (1-2)
S: Benitez (2)

Series Summary: Castle Rock takes 4 out of 5, but every game was close. There were four 1-run games and one 2-run game. The Hounds bats were kept in check but a subpar California rotation, but managed to do enough to win.

Monroeville Maulers @ Chicago Demolition

Series Preview: The upcoming series between the Chicago Mobsters and the Monroeville Maulers is shaping up to be a closely contested battle. The Mobsters, with a slight edge at 6-5, have shown resilience and are looking to capitalize on their winning record. On the other hand, the Maulers at 5-6 are not far behind and will be eager to even out their record and possibly overtake the Mobsters.

Given the records and the momentum of both teams, the odds for the series could be quite even. However, with the Mobsters holding a slight advantage in the standings, they might be considered the favorites. A reasonable line for the series could be Chicago Mobsters at -130 and Monroeville Maulers at +110, indicating a slightly higher probability of a Mobsters series win but acknowledging the potential for an upset by the Maulers

Please note that these odds are hypothetical and for entertainment purposes only, as actual betting odds would be determined by many factors including recent performance, injuries, and historical matchups.

Game #1: In a dominant display, the Monroeville Maulers shut out Chicago Demolition with a final score of 8-0. The game began with a tense first inning as both teams failed to score. However, the Maulers broke the deadlock in the second inning with a solo home run by A. Soriano off P. Rapp. The Maulers continued to build their lead, capitalizing on Chicago’s errors and walks, including a pivotal moment in the fifth inning when two runs scored on a passed ball. Maulers’ pitcher Jason Schmidt delivered an exceptional performance, striking out ten batters over eight innings and allowing no runs. Chicago’s offense struggled to gain momentum against Schmidt’s commanding presence on the mound. The Maulers sealed their victory with a run in the ninth, and relief pitcher Bob File closed the game without giving up any runs. The Maulers’ offense was consistent throughout, with key hits that kept the pressure on Chicago’s defense and pitching staff.

Final Score: Monroeville Maulers 8 – Chicago 0

Win: Jason Schmidt 2-1 (1.90)
Loss: Pat Rapp 0-1 (7.42)

Game #2: The game showcased both teams’ defensive prowess and pitching skills, the Monroeville Maulers clinched a 3-1 victory over the Chicago Demolition. The game began with a series of quick outs as both teams’ pitchers, Kevin Millwood for the Demolition and Darren Oliver for the Maulers, dominated the early innings. The Demolition took an early lead in the bottom of the 1st inning with Carlos Delgado driving in Shannon Stewart with a Texas League single. The score remained 1-0 until the top of the 8th inning when Daryle Ward, coming off the bench for the Maulers, hit a decisive three-run homer that turned the game on its head. Despite a solid performance from Millwood, who struck out 10 batters, he took the loss for the Demolition. Oliver pitched a strong seven and a third innings, earning the win for the Maulers. Bob File came in to close the game, securing his second save of the season. The Maulers’ strategic hitting and effective bullpen management ultimately led them to victory in this tight contest.

Final Score: Monroeville 3 – Chicago 1

Win: Darren Oliver 2-1 (3.57)
Loss: Kevin Millwood 0-2 (5.74)
Save: Bob File #2

Game #3: In a game that saw the Demolition take an early lead, the Maulers fought back but ultimately fell short. The Demolition’s offense was on full display, with key hits and strategic base running that put them ahead. Despite the Maulers’ efforts, including a game-tying home run by W. Gonzalez, the Demolition’s bats proved too much. A pivotal moment came in the 5th inning when D. Justice’s sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run. The Demolition then broke the game open in the 8th inning, highlighted by C. Delgado’s three-run homer, sealing the victory. Pitcher R. Clemens earned the win, while J. Brower took the loss, and J. Zimmerman secured the save. The Maulers were unable to rally in the 9th, concluding the match with a decisive win for the Demolition.

Final Score: Chicago 10 – Monroeville 2

Win: Roger Clemens 1-2 (6.23)
Loss: Jim Brower 0-1 (2.93)
Save: Jordan Zimmerman #2

Game #4: The game, saw the Maulers take an early lead in the top of the 1st inning with a two-run single by D. Mientkiewicz, but the Demolition quickly responded. A three-run homer by P. Nevin in the bottom of the 1st put the Demolition ahead, and they continued to build on their lead with a series of hits and strategic plays. Despite a collision in the outfield that led to an injury for Demolition’s center fielder Stewart, the team managed to maintain their momentum.

The Maulers attempted to claw back, scoring a run in the top of the 5th, but the Demolition’s offense proved too strong. By the end of the 6th inning, the Demolition had extended their lead to 8-4. Pitcher David Cone delivered a strong performance for the Demolition, striking out six across five innings and setting the stage for a win. The Maulers couldn’t muster a comeback in the later innings, with the Demolition’s bullpen holding them at bay.

Final Score: Chicago 8 – Monroeville 4 –

Win: David Cone 2-1 (6.59)
Loss: Julian Tavarez 1-3 (8.85)

Game #5: The Monroeville Maulers emerged victorious over the Chicago Demolition with a final score of Monroeville 5 – Chicago 2. The game began with a tense start as both teams held each other scoreless through the first two innings. Pitcher Pedro Martinez of the Demolition showcased his skill with a series of strikeouts, but the Maulers’ resilience paid off in the later innings.

The Demolition initially took the lead in the third inning with a two-run double by C. Johnson. However, the Maulers responded in the fifth with a deep double by A. Soriano, narrowing the gap to 2-1. The game’s momentum shifted in the sixth inning when V. Guerrero hit a game-tying home run for the Maulers.

The pivotal eighth inning saw back-to-back doubles from D. Mientkiewicz and Guerrero, giving the Maulers a 3-2 lead. J. Hernandez then extended the lead with a triple, driving in two more runs. The Demolition’s pitching changes couldn’t stem the tide, and Maulers’ pitcher Willis Roberts, with a solid performance, set the stage for closer Ramiro Mendoza to secure the win and his third save of the season.

Arthur Rhodes took the loss for the Demolition after giving up the go-ahead run. The game concluded with the Maulers’ defense and Mendoza shutting down any hopes of a Demolition comeback in the ninth inning, sealing the win and ending the game with a double play and a groundout.

Final Score: Monroeville 5 – Chicago 2

Win: Willis Roberts 0-1 (4.60)
Loss: Arthur Rhodes 0-1 (4.91)
Save: Ramiro Mendoza #3

Series Summary: The series between the Chicago Mobsters and the Monroeville Maulers was a showcase of competitive baseball with both teams displaying moments of brilliance. The Mobsters, with a record of 6-5, were slight favorites over the Maulers, who stood at 5-6. The series was expected to be evenly matched, with odds reflecting a tight contest. The Maulers demonstrated their tenacity, particularly in an 8-0 shutout against the Chicago Demolition, where pitcher Jason Schmidt struck out ten batters, and A. Soriano contributed a solo home run. Another victory for the Maulers came with a 3-1 win, where Daryle Ward‘s three-run homer overturned the Demolition’s early lead, and Darren Oliver earned the win with Bob File securing the save.

However, the Demolition also had their moments, including a 10-2 win where R. Clemens took the victory and an 8-4 triumph with David Cone‘s strong pitching performance. The Maulers’ resilience was on full display in a 5-2 win, overcoming a two-run deficit with strategic hitting, including a game-tying homer by V. Guerrero and a lead-seizing double by D. Mientkiewicz. Willis Roberts earned the win, and Ramiro Mendoza notched the save. The series highlighted the competitive nature of both teams, with the Maulers’ ability to capitalize on key moments leading to their success.

Hollywood Vampires @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview: Two teams that are not good play 5 games in Winnipeg.
Series Summary: Hollywood takes 3 of 5 from Winnipeg/ Floyd goes 12 for 22 for Hollywood.

Dondero Oaks @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Summary: Panthers sweep the Oaks. It was a series of big innings, but Dondero was unable to capitalize on a 9 run inning in game 4 as Ft. Worth scored 4 in the same frame to tie the game at 9 going on to win in extra innings.

Hampton Huskies @ Flora-Bama Mullets

Series Preview: The now Ichiroless Hampton Huskies visit the Flora-Bama Mullets for six games. The Mullets dipped their toe into the Ichiro stove top action, but couldn’t make any traction. The local talk radio rumor has it that California forced the trade by leveraging compromising pics of the Hampton GM taken with the team’s fury mascot after he went on a bender following the teams slow start.
Game #1: Dreifort vs. Leiter
Gonzalez made Dreifort pay for issuing a couple walks as the Mullets jumped out to an early 3-0 lead. Fick’s two run shot in 4th made it a one run game until the Mullets exploded for four runs in the 6th.
Flora-Bama 7-4
W – Leiter (2-0), L – Dreifort (0-1), S – Pavano (1)
Game #2: Hermansen vs. Adams
Hunter’s two run homer in 2nd put the Mullets ahead early. Recently acquired Drew hit a solo in 4th. A Sierra sac fly in the 4th gave the Mullets a little insurance. Burnitz crushed a solo in 8th that made it a one run game, but Sasaki closed out the 9th to preserve the win.
Flora-Bama 3-2
W – Adams (2-0) L – Hermanson (0-3) S – Sasaki (2)
Game #3: Mahomes vs. Burnett
Huskies jumped out for two runs in 1st led by Drew and Burnitz. Juan Gone smacked a three run homer in the bottom of the inning for Flora-Bama. Mullets exploded for five more runs in the 3rd to knock out Mohomes and cruise to the easy win.
Flora-Bama 8-5
W – Burnett (1-1), L – Mahomes (0-1), S – Pavano (2)
Game #4: Chen vs. Person
A Hillenbrand rbi single in 2nd gave Hampton the early lead. Doubles by Hunter and Bell lead to the Mullets grabbing a 2-1 lead in 4th. Fick tied it with a sac fly tied in the 5th. Flora-Bama turned to the pen in the 7th and the Huskies loaded the bases without any outs. The Mullets brought on their closer Sasaki, but he allowed all three runs to the score. De Los Santos allowed five more runs as the Huskies scored eight runs in the last three innings to win it easily.
Hampton 10-2
W – Chen (1-2), L – Sasaki (0-1)
Game #5: Zito vs. Leiter
Mullets got on the board early in the 2nd when Zito gave up back to back doubles to Gonzalez and Hunter. In the 5th, Drew doubled and Burnitz singled him to tie it. Berkman’s rbi single in the 5th put Mullets back on top by one. Berkman’s rbi double in the 7th added a little insurance. Drew’s second homer of the series in 8th made it a one run game as Sasaki started to wear down. In the 9th, Politte replaced Sasaki and got Fick swinging with a runner on to preserve the tight win. Huskies left eight runners on base as Leiter worked out of multiple jams.
Flora-Bama 3-2
W – Leiter (3-0), L – Zito (2-1), S – Politte (1)
Series Summary: Both teams scored a total of 23 runs during the series, but the Mullets made them count taking 4 of 5 games. The recent trade of his brother Mark didn’t seem to impact Al Leiter. Al locked up the player of the series going 2-0 with 13 SO over 12 innings with only 4 earned runs. JD Drew saved some face for his new GM batting .400 with two homeruns in the three games he played. Berkman has now hit safely in every game (16) this year.

Danbury Mad Hatters @ Valdosta Bombers

Series Preview: Mad Hatters visit the Bombers in Valdosta.
Game #1: Valdosta 8-3. Jamie Moyer (1-2, 2.86) went 7 strong innings backed by 3 HR’s as the Bombers cruise to the win.
Game #2: Valdosta 7-6 (13 Innings). Back and forth affair but the Valdosta pen was just good enough for the win.
Game #3: Danbury 11-9. Plenty of offense on display. Bombers scored 3 in the 9th to make it look a little better. Mad Hatters rocked the Valdosta pitchers for 6 2B’s and 4-HR’s.

Series Summary: Valdosta takes 3 of 5.

HORNETS 2 / 8 / 2
CRABS 12 / 16 / 0
WP – Appier (1-1)
LP – Bauer (0-1)

Game #2: Game 2 had a lot more drama than game 1. Chipper Jones would hit a first inning, solo homerun (#8) for the second straight game to put the Crabs in front early. Behind a single, double, and 2 RBIS from Tino Martinez, Manhattan would build a 4-1 lead after 4. A Dimitry Young 6th inning 2 run-triple would pull Baltimore within one. In the 9th, Baltimore ties the game on an Eric Byrnes pinch-hit SAC fly. In the home half of the 10th, Mark Mclemore singles, steals second, and scores the winner on Chipper Jones‘ RBI double off Hornets’ closer Byung-Hyun Kim. The Baltimore bullpen was tough in this one, tossing 5 shutout innings.

HORNETS 4 / 12 / 2
CRABS 5 / 10 / 1
WP – Stanton (1-0)
LP – Kim (0-2)

Game #3: The game started to look like another Baltimore blowout, as the Crabs batter Tim Wakefield for 7 runs, only 4 earned, in 4+ innings, to build an 8-1 lead after 5. But Manhattan battles
back with 5 in the 6th, the big blow a 3-run Derek Jeter homerun. In the 8th, Eric Byrnes‘ second solo homerun of the day, making the score 9-6, would prove critical as Matt Stairs would club a 2-run homerun in the 9th to pull Manhattan within a run. Kyle Farnsworth would settle down, however, to seal the Baltimore victory.
HORNETS 8 / 10 / 2
CRABS 9 / 8 / 1
WP – Johnson (2-1)
LP – Wakefield (1-1)
S – Farnsworth (1)
Game #4: Game 4 was a pitcher’s duel between Matt Morris and Jeff Suppan. A Chris Latham 1st inning RBI single would put Manhattan up 1-0, then the pitchers took over. Tino Martinez‘s 3 run bomb in the 8th breaks the game open. Morris goes the distance, shutting out the Crabs on 6 hits, striking out 10.

HORNETS 4 / 6 / 0
CRABS 0 / 6 / 1
WP – Morris (2-2)
LP – Suppan (1-2)

Game #5: Once again, the Crab bats chase a Hornet starter early, as Steve Sparks would only go 3 and a third, yielding 6 runs and 7 hits, as Baltimore would build a 6-2 lead after 4. But, once again, no lead is safe. In the 5th, Tino Martinez hits another 3-run homerun for Manhattan, and the Hornets would score two more in the 6th to seize a 7-6 advantage. Dmitry Young’s 2-run homerun in the home half of the 6th puts the Crabs back in front, 8-7. Baltimore would add a run in the 7th and Manhattan would get one back in the 8th to make it 9-8 heading to the 9th, where Kyle Farnsworth would strike out Matt Stairs with 2 on and 2 out to secure the win. Tino Martinez went 3 for 5 with the 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored for Manhattan. Dmitry Young went 5 for 5 on the day, with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs, and Jorge Posada had a single, homerun, and 4 RBIs for Baltimore.

HORNETS 8 / 11 / 0
CRABS 9 / 12 / 0
WP – Stanton (2-0)
LP – Leiter (0-1)
S – Farnsworth (2)

Series Summary: In an exciting series, Baltimore manages to win 4 of 5, including a pair of 9-8 victories. After getting 8 hits in 17 ABs over the series, Derek Jeter finds himself batting .426 on the season. Sean Casey was 6 for 17 and his average now sits at .429.

Michigan Marauders @ Gladstone Gladiators

Series Preview: First place Gladstone hosts last place Michigan in NL Central action.
Game #1: Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 3rd on a 2-run shot by Aaron Boone. Darrin Fletcher made it 3-0 in the top of the 5th with a solo shot. The Gladiators got one back in the bottom of the frame, when Michael Tucker walked and stole 2nd, then scored on a single by Henry Blanco. Corey Koskie added another in the 6th with a solo homer, but that was all the scoring as Michigan took the opener.
FINAL SCORE: MIC 3 – GLA 2
Game #2: Gladstone opened the scoring in the 2nd inning on an RBI double by Chuck Knoblauch, driving in Benito Santiago. Shane Halter tied it with a solo homer in the 4th, but Knoblauch answered back in the 5th with his own blast to regain the lead. The Gladiators tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th, and that was all she wrote.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 4 – MIC 1
Game #3: Game 3 was a pitchers’ duel between Russ Ortiz for the Glads and Brad Radke for the Marauders. Both pitchers went the distance, tossing 3-hit gems. Unfortunately for Michigan, one of those hits came in the bottom of the 10th in the form of a solo blast by Jeff Bagwell with 2 outs.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 1 – MIC 0
Game #4: Gladstone jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd inning and never looked back. By the time the dust settled, Gladstone had 12 runs on 12 hits, while Javier Vasquez and Pedro Borbon combined to shut out the Marauders.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 12 – MIC 0
Game #5: Jim Edmonds started the scoring for Michigan with a 2-run blast in the 1st with no outs. It looked to be Michigan’s day as they tacked on a couple more in the 2nd. Gladstone quietly chipped away at the lead with a run in the 3rd and a pair in the 4th, but still trailed 4-3. The Marauders tacked on another pair in the 6th inning to make it a 6-3 Michigan lead. Then came the bottom of the 7th. Henry Blanco led it off with a triple, and scored on Chuck Knoblauch‘s infield single. Dave Berg executed a perfect hit-and-run single to send Knoblauch to 3rd. Corey Koskie singled in Knoblauch to cut Michigan’s lead to 6-5, still nobody out. Jeff Bagwell singled, but Berg got thrown out trying to score from 2nd and Bagwell got thrown out trying for 2nd, leaving Koskie at 3rd base with 2 outs. Cesar Crespo (who’d replaced injured Richard Hidalgo) walked and Ben Grieve hit a single to tie the score. Michael Tucker smashed a double which drove in Crespo and Grieve to take the lead. Mike Lincoln and Felix Rodriguez held down the fort to give Gladstone the win.
FINAL SCORE: GLA 8 – MIC 6
Series Summary: Gladstone takes the series 4 games to 1 over Michigan. Russ Ortiz made a case for Pitcher of the Week with 10 innings of 3-hit shutout ball in game #3.

Long Beach Titans @ Blarney Drive Bandits

Series Summary: Long Beach drubs Blarney in game 1. The Bandits took that as a wake up call and took the next 3 convincingly and squeaked out the last in extras.
