Fort Worth Panthers @ Chicago Demolition |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | In an upcoming series that’s sure to captivate fans, the Chicago Demolition (8-8) are set to clash with the formidable Fort Worth Panthers (12-4). The Demolition, bolstered by the strategic addition of Darryl Kile to their pitching roster, are looking to make a significant impact. Kile, stepping in as the #3 starter, brings a wealth of experience and a competitive edge to the Demolition’s rotation. His ability to consistently deliver quality starts is expected to provide a much-needed stability to the team’s mid-series games, potentially turning the tide in close matchups.
The Panthers, with a superior record, come into the series as favorites, but the Demolition’s recent moves, including Kile’s acquisition, suggest that they’re gearing up for a serious challenge. The odds for the series are leaning towards the Panthers at 1.5-1, reflecting their impressive season performance. However, with Kile’s arm in the mix, the Demolition have a wildcard factor that could upset the Panthers’ rhythm, making this series one to watch closely. |
| Game #1: | In a dominant display, the Fort Worth Panthers shut out the Chicago Demolition with a final score of Fort Worth 10 – Chicago 0. The game kicked off with the Panthers’ R. White securing a base hit, setting the tone early. The first inning saw the Panthers take a 2-0 lead after G. Sheffield’s high drive fell between outfielders, allowing two runners to score. The Panthers continued their offensive onslaught with C. Counsell hitting a three-run homer in the second inning, extending the lead to 5-0. The third inning was highlighted by F. McGriff’s solo home run and R. Aurilia’s two-run homer, bringing the score to 8-0. The Panthers’ relentless attack didn’t stop there, as they added two more runs in the fourth inning, courtesy of another hit by Aurilia. The Demolition’s defense struggled, with errors contributing to the Panthers’ lead. Starting pitcher for the Demolition, K. Millwood, was pulled early after giving up six runs. The Panthers’ pitcher, K. Brown, delivered a strong performance, allowing only two hits over six innings. The Demolition failed to rally, ultimately succumbing to the Panthers’ superior play on both sides of the field.
Final Score: Fort Worth 10 – Chicago 0 Win: Kevin Brown 2-0 (1.96) |
| Game #2: | In an intense extra-innings battle, the Chicago Demolition edged out the Fort Worth Panthers with a final score of Chicago 9 – Fort Worth 8 (11 Innings). Ramirez, but the Demolition clawed back with a series of doubles and a game-tying home run from T. Clark in the 7th. The game remained deadlocked until the 11th inning when a wild pitch allowed P. Nevin to score the winning run for the Demolition. Arthur Rhodes took the win, while Travis Phelps was saddled with the loss.

However, the Demolition took the lead again in the bottom of the eighth with a pivotal two-run homer by C. Pickering. Despite Fort Worth’s efforts, Chicago’s B. Phil Nevin later scored on a wild pitch, and Mike Anderson tagged up on a sacrifice fly to add the third run for the Demolition. The Panthers managed to get on the board in the third inning with a solo home run by Doug Glanville, but that was the extent of their scoring.
Pedro Martinez delivered a strong performance for the Demolition, claiming the win with six innings pitched, allowing only one run on three hits and striking out four. Ramon Ortiz took the loss for the Panthers, giving up three runs, two earned, over five and two-thirds innings, with six walks and three strikeouts. Sheffield, but the Demolition extended their lead in the fourth with another homer by C. Pickering. Despite a late run by the Panthers in the eighth, the Demolition’s defense held strong, and J. However, the Demolition’s offense soon came alive with a solo home run by C. Delgado in the bottom of the first, giving Chicago an early lead.
The Panthers managed to tie the game in the third inning with a solo home run by R. Greer, but the Demolition’s bats were just getting started. In the sixth inning, they regained the lead with a series of hits, including a crucial RBI double by M. Anderson. The Demolition continued to extend their lead with a two-run double by D. Hocking in the seventh inning, followed by another two-run double by E. Renteria in the eighth. Chicago’s pitchers held strong, with Cone earning the win after six solid innings, and the bullpen, including M. Anderson, B. Wagner, and E. Yan, closing out the game effectively. Fort Worth’s Kevin Brown took the loss after giving up three runs over five innings. The Demolition’s offense was too much for the Panthers, sealing a decisive victory. Hampton Huskies @ Blarney Drive Bandits |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | A good team (Blarney Drive) versus Hampton. |
| Game #1: | Blarney Drive 2, Hampton 1 Randy Johnson (3-0) limited the Huskies to just two hits, but Darren Dreifort (0-2) was almost as good for Hampton as he only gave up four but it was enough to get the Bandits the win. Brian Giles was the offensive juggernaut in the game with two singles for the Bandits. JD Drew (6) smacked a solo home run for Hampton’s only run of the game. |
| Game #2: | Hampton 10, Blarney Drive 7 The Huskies scored three runs in the bottom of the 8th on Scott Hatteberg‘s line shot homer off Jeff Tam to break a 7-7 tie and get the home team a rare win. The homer was Hatteberg’s first of the season. Mark Little homered twice in a losing effort for Blarney Drive and drove in five runs in the game. Josias Manzanillo earned his first save of the season thanks to pitching a perfect 9th. Hatteberg also doubled in the game to give him four RBIs on the day. Shawn Green added three hits for the Bandits. Note – Hampton scored six unearned runs in the game off David Wells in the 4th inning when Todd Pratt and Alex Cora each committed errors. |
| Game #3: | Blarney Drive 11, Hampton 6 An unclose game made close only thanks to a Robert Fick grand slam in the bottom of the 9th that meant a Hampton 5-run loss instead of 9 runs. The Bandits blasted three homers off Scum-of-the-Earth starting pitcher Bruce Chen and then went on to hammer two more in the laugher. Homer honors went to Quilvio VEras (1), Shawn Green (9), Magglio Ordonez (3), Craig Paquette (1) and Todd Pratt (1). Jeremy Giambi (2) also homered for Hampton. Ironically, Jason Marquis (3-1) had a two-hit shutout going when he was pulled in the top of the 7th and that finally gave Hampton a chance to un-Chen the score. |
| Game #4: | Hampton 10, Blarney Drive 0 Hampton clobbered Mike Hampton and the lesser ranks of the Blarney Drive bullpen while Barry Zito (3-1) nailed down seven shutout innings in the Huskies’ win. Every Hampton hitter had at least one hit in the game with four of them leaving the park – Gutierrez (3), Giambi (3), Redmond (2), and Hillenbrand (1). |
| Game #5: | Hampton 4, Blarney Drive 2 (10) Stev Cox blasted a two-run shot off David Weathers in the bottom of the 10th with two outs to give Hampton a walk-off win. Marcus Giles and Robert Fick each had three hits for the Huskies while Craig Paquette did the same for Blarney Drive. Chris Reitsma was great for the Bandits and tossed 9 innings and gave up just one unearned run on eight hits. |
| Game #6: | Blarney Drive 7, Hampton 1 A no-doubter for Blarney Drive with their offense producing and the pitching mound occupied by Randy Johnson (4-0) for 7 innings. The only satisfaction in the game for Hampton is that Johnson’s ERA got bumped up to 1.00. Johnson was not dominating – only 5 Ks – but he didn’t need to be. Magglio Ordonez (5) homered twice in the game for the winners. |
| Series Summary: | A split against a vastly better team – we will take it. |

Hollywood Vampires @ Manhattan Gas Hornets |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Gas Hornets home after their roster moves – and they’ve been wondering why? Results have been horrendous! And now Hollywood arrives – hope the bats are working? |
| Game #1: | Devon White rbi double in 4th puts the Vampires up 1-0 but Tino Martinez (6) ties it up in the bottom half with a solo shot. Still 1-1 in the 8th when Millar (3) homers off Kim for a 2-1 Hollywood lead. To the bottom of the 9th and DeShields gets lead-off walk off Foulke. Isringhausen takes over. DeShields steals 2nd. Anderson then grounds out moving DeShields to 3rd. Alicea then walks! Graffanino singles to White in LF, tie game! Runners on 1st and 2nd, 1 out. Ricky Henderson up, flies out to White – wait – the ball pops out of his glove, Alicea keeps running, throw home, safe. Game over on a Devon White error – seriously! HLW 2 MGH 3 WP Kim (1-2) LP Isringhausen (1-1) BS (3) |
| Game #2: | Hollywood shakes off the improbable finish to game 1 behind Wade Miller and his 1 hit, CG shutout to take game 2. And he gets LOTS of support. Cliff Floyd goes 3 for 5, 2 runs, 2 rbis, double and homer (4)! 9 hit attack nets 5 runs for Hollywood – Floyd’s solo homer in the 1st turned out to be all that was needed. HLW 5 MGH 0 WP Miller (2-2) LP Maduro (1-1) |
| Game #3: | For the 2nd game in a row, Cliff Floyd gets 3 hits, 2 runs, 2 rbis (and another homer (5))! He scores in the 1st – but the Gas Hornets erase that with 4 of their own in the 1st. Turns out it was the Bubba Trammell day – 3 hits, 2 homers (4) and 5 rbis. 4 runs in the 1st and 5 in the 6th. Those 5 made the score 12-2 Manhattan. Mulder gives up 8 hits, 2 walks and 8 runs in 5 innings for Hollywood. HLW 3 MGH 12 WP Wakefield (2-1) LP Mulder (2-1) |
| Game #4: | Manhattan keeps the run scoring going in game 4. But they get more runs than hits, but they also get more runs than walks and the GOT SIX walks! The Gas Hornets get homers from Kendall (2), stairs (3) and DeShields (1) as they run up 7 runs through the first 5 innings. Matt Morris blanked the Vampires over 7.2 innings and only a Kevin Millar (4) solo homer in the 9th kept Manhattan from a shutout. HLW 1 MGH 7 WP Morris (3-2) LP Garcia (1-2) |
| Game #5: | A game the fans loved, and hated, and loved again! Randy Velarde leads off the game with a solo homer (2), fans are not thrilled as they see Steve Sparks give up a homer in his 1st home start for Manhattan. But he settled in and through 3 innings of pitching, the 1 run was it. Gas Hornets take lead with 3 runs in the 3rd, big hit, Graffanino 2 run double. Devon White grounds out in the 4th driving in 1 and it’s 3-2 Gas Hornets after 4. Ricky Henderson makes it 4-2 with a solo homer (4) in the 6th off starter Odalis Perez. Then the 7th! Top half – Furcal (speed 20) leads off with a single and goes to 3rd on a Velarde double. That’s it for Sparks and Kim comes on to hold off the big threat, Manhattan up 4-2. Floyd up, he walks to load the bases! Konerko up – he walks. 4-3 Still no outs. Millar then drives toward the hole, Jeter gloves it, to 2nd, to 1st DP but the run scores and it’s 4-4, but now 2 outs, runner on 3rd. Simon up and sure enough, he singles to RF driving in Floyd and the Vampires take the lead 5-4! That’s it for the top half, but what a mess. Bottom half and Chad Fox is brought on. (one of the 20* in the Vampire bullpen) Jeter leads off – walk, steals 2nd. Graffanino walks. Durham up, squares to sacrifice, bunts it toward 3rd, it’s going foul – no, it stays fair – base hit, bases loaded! Fox leaves, Steve L. Kline in to face Tino Martinez. Infield in-Tino grounds to Velarde at 2nd, bobbles it, but get the force at home. 1 out. Infield now at double play depth, Kendall up, singles to center, one run in, ball gets past White and Durham scores and Tino moves to 3rd. Gas Hornets up 6-5! Trammell then rips a single scoring another. Kline leaves, Keith Foulke (another 20*) comes in. Henderson greets him with a single to center scoring Kendall! So Manhattan regained the lead witha 4 run bottom half, 8-5! Hollywood makes it 8-6 in 8th when Furcal doubles with 2 outs and Velarde singles him homer (3 for 5, 2 runs, 2 rbis)! But a Velarde error in the bottom half made it 9-6 and then after an IW to Tino, Jason Kendall hits an rbi double making it 10-6. That wrapped up the scoring! HLW 6 MGH 10 WP Kim (2-2) BS (2) S M.Leiter (1) 27 hits in this one. |
| Game #6: | Any hopes for a 5 win series were dashed when Roy Oswalt tosses a 2 hitter for 6.2 innings and this time the bullpen comes through when left Steve L. Kline goes 2.1 inning (7 outs, 7 batters) for the save! But the win was still tough. A Konerko rbi double in the 4th got what turned out to be the only run needed, but Rick Reed was being tough (if he could have gotten some support). Vampires get an insurance run in the 8th on a Jimenez rbi single and Velarde makes it 3-0 in the 9th on an rbi double! HLW 3 MGH 0 WP Oswalt (2-0) S Kline (1) LP Reed (0-2) |
| Series Summary: | 4-2 week for the Gas Hornets – both losses were shutouts. Team needs to hit, that was a given coming into the season. Can they compete??? |
