Game #1: Bonds hits a grand slam in the bottom of the 2nd and the Hounds keep piling on throughout the game to take a 7-1 lead into the 8th. But, Fort Worth gets four runs in the 8th to make it close, pulling to 7-5. But, that’s how it would stay, as Wetteland and Benitez come on in relief of Burkett to close it out. Bonds picks up his 58th home run to go along with 145 RBI as he makes his case for MVP.

W: Burkett (5-3)
L: Ritchie (5-16)
S: Benitez (24)

Game #2: It’s a back-and-forth affair, with Kevin Brown and Darren Dreifort in a duel. McGriff gives Fort Worth a 3-2 lead in the 8th with a solo HR off of Wunsch. But, in the bottom of the 9th, Dye walks and Mike Sweeney hits a walk-off homer off of Brown, who was staying in for the potential complete game victory. Hounds walk it off 4-3.

W: Benitez (6-10)
L: Brown (15-10)

Game #3: Fort Worth breaks away from a close game, scoring 3 runs in the 8th to take a 9-6 lead, and they don’t look back. Aurilia, Guillen and Grebeck all had two RBI for Fort Worth.

W: Williamson (5-7)
L: DeJean (3-2)

Game #4: Bonds smacks home run number 60 to open up the scoring in the first (his fourth of the series). Sheffield ties it at 2-2 with a homer in the 4th, and McGriff goes back-to-back to make it 3-2, Panthers. The teams now figure you can only score on homers, as Sweeney hits his second of the game to tie it at 3-3. HOunds have three hits, and they are all solo homers.

Fort Worth smacks Elarton around in the 5th, scoring 6 runs and taking a 9-3 lead. Castle ROck inches back into it, though. They score 3 in the 6th and one in the 7th to cut it to 9-7. They get the bases loaded in the bottom of the 8th with two outs and Bonds at the plate. But, Travis Miller gets him to strike out!

Sheffield leads off the top of the 9th with a solo shot, his second of the game and 37th of the season, which extends the lead to 10-8. And, that’s how it would finish. Fort Worth ties the series at 2-2.

W: Redman (3-16)
L: Elarton (9-12)
S: Miller (1)

Game #5: It’s a rubber match for the final game of the series. It’s another back-and-forth affair, as Fort Worth takes a 4-3 lead into the 7th. Tatis delivers a pinch-hit single to give Castle Rock the 5-4 lead in the bottom half of the inning though. A wild pitch from Sauerbeck extends the lead to 6-4. Castle Rock takes advantage of some sloppy Panthers fielding, and extends the lead to 8-4 going into the 9th. Benitez gets Forth Worth 1-2-3 and that is the ballgame. Only one homer total in the game, Aurilia for Fort Worth (who also went 3-4).

W: Wetteland (2-0)

Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Gas Hornets looking to clinch the division face the team that still has a chance (slim as Magic # is 3) but the Bums handed it to Manhattan last week at Santa Rosa – so who knows. They’ve got tons of power and we are light in pitching…
Game #1: Beach Bums get off to 2-0 lead in 1st on Hildalgo homer (53rd!!). But the home team manages to put up a 6 spot in the 2nd and 3 more in the 3rd for a 9-3 lead. Santa Rosa doesn’t quit, Vanderwal homers against his former team and drives in 3 but the Gas Hornets hold on for 10-8 win and lower the magic # to 1!
SRB 8-12-2 LP Vazquez (6-10_
MGH 10-14-2 WP Reed (17-4) S Williams (13)
Game #2: Down to the wire and the Bums haven’t given up. Willie Blair goes 6, 2 hits, 2 runs and when he leaves it’s 3-2 Santa Rosa. The Bums offense attack Manhattan starter Bell for 4 runs in his 7 innings and get two more off Fyhrie and they easily pull out a 6-3 win. Alomar (22) and Rios (9) homer for the Bums, Jeter (12), Kendall (17) for the Gas Hornets. Hildalgo 3 hits, 2 rbis in the game.
SRB 6-9-0 WP Blair (10-7)
MGH 3-4-0 LP Bell (9-10)
Game #3: Manhattan gets 1 in the 1st as Durham doubles home Jeter. Then Thomas (37) and Alcantara (3) get 2 run homers (in 3rd and 4th) for a 4-1 Bums lead. Manhattan ties it up in the 5th Jeter homers (13) for 3 run. A Kendall homer (18) in the 6th gives Manhattan a 1 run lead, 5-4 but the Beach Bums tie it in the 7th. Then the team goes blank for 4 innings. But Garrett (could he be and MVP) goes yard for the walk off homer (36) in the 12th (for his 170 rbi!). And Manhattan clinches the division!! Celebration follows the dramatic win!
SRB 5- 8-0 LP Karsay (4-12)
MGH 6-12-0 WP Wall (5-5)
Game #4: Manhattan gives a bunch of guys the day off (or were they groggy?). Santa Rosa doesn’t. 5 homers, 4 doubles and a triple stake them to a 10 run, 14 hit outburst. And Fernandez and 3 relievers hold the Gas Hornets to 8 hits and no runs!
HRS: Thomas (38), Alomar 2 (23, 24), Berkman 2 (16, 17) and he gets 5 rbis! Alomar has 4 hits and misses the cycle by hitting 2 homers instead of a double!
SRB 10-14-0 WP Fernandez (8-2)
MGH 0- 9-2 LP Anderson (11-11) – he gives up all 5 homers.
Game #5: 1 more between these two and it was something. Both teams score 4 in the 1st, the the Bums get 3 in the 2nd and 4 more in the 3rd. That’s 11. Manhattan gets 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th. But during the game they ground into 4 DPs killing so many rallies. Each team scores in the 8th and that Sasaki closes out the 9th for Santa Rosa and they win it 12-10.
HOMERS: 5 more for the Bums – Alomar 2 again(25, 26), Hidalgo (54), Rios (10), Perez (5). Rios 4 rbis!
SRB 12-15-2 WP Rodriguez (10-6) S Sasaki (25)
MGH 10-12-2 LP Etherton (5-3)
Series Summary: Well we lose the series 3-2 to Santa Rosa, but we clinch the division, so it’s OK. 6 more games next week at home against Baltimore to close out the regular season.

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Blarney Drive Bandits

Series Summary: Winnipeg takes the first 2 but Blarney takes the last 3. Game 4 was an insane as teams combined for 29 runs on 34 hits.

DeWitt Tigers @ Houghton Penguins

Series Summary: Dewitt takes 3 of 5 from Houghton.

Monroeville Maulers @ Southlake Scorpions

Series Preview: Monroeville needs to keep winning as they look toward a wild card spot in the playoffs. With already two pitchers having reached their limit this year and a couple more quickly approaching that threshold, Southlake is just trying to cobble enough pitching to finish the season with some respectability.
Game #1: Maulers pound out 16 hits in an offensive display of excellence winning. Troy Glaus goes 3-6 with two bombs in the victory.
Game #2: Chicago having defeated Harper Woods earlier in the day gathered in their clubhouse watching this one. With a Mauler defeat the Mobsters would wrap up the AL Central this year.

Unlike yesterdays slugfest, this game would see Lieber and Parque hammer the strike zone and keep scoring to a minimum. Not that each team didnt get their shots. The Maulers stranded 11 runners on the day while the Scorps left 10 of their own men out on the pond.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the 8th runners at the corners and two outs, the Scorpions stung the Maulers by executing a double steal. Relaford took off from first and the old man Dante Bichette delayed at third. The throw at second was redirected home, but the Canadian boy got his hand on the back side of the plate before the catcher could put the tag down.

But the Maulers sent a call to Chicago and told them to put the Champagne back in the cooler, because they had a few tricks up their sleeves as well.

With two outs in the top of the 9th, Reese drew a walk from Reyes. That was followed by a textbook hit and run by Jacque Jones, putting runners at the corners for the Maulers.

Manager Sarge Stauffer elected to not pitch to MVP Candidate Vlad Guerrero instead he would take his chances against Troy Glaus. Did I forget to mention that Glaus was 2 for 3 with another homer (His 3rd in two nights) and all 3 RBIs for the Maulers at that point.

Danny Reyes toed the rubber intently, steadying himself for what could be the ball game. As he peered in to get his sign from the catcher the lights in the stadium went dark.

As the crowd gasped in disbelief, their mood immediately changed when all heard those iconic first notes. ENTER SANDMAN had begun to play.

Rising from a platform in the centerfield bleachers Kirk Hammett, Jason Newsted, James Hetfield, and Lars Ulrich, stood playing. Sarge Stauffer called time and signaled to the pen. The stadium lights turned back on as the entire crowd erupted like a volcano as they witnessed their Lights Out Closer Mariano Rivera coming into the game.

Bases loaded, two outs, the hottest hitter in baseball at the plate. The count worked itself full. Rivera shook off his catcher not once, not twice but three times. Glaus called time. He yelled out to the mound, “scared to throw something rookie” and smirked.

Rivera stepped back. Re-engaged the rubber from the windup this time. He didn’t need to look in for a sign this time, because all could hear him say, “Here comes the slider biotch”.

The runners took off with the pitcher and despite knowing exactly what was coming Glaus whiffed at the pitch and the excitement in the park literally shook the building to its foundation.

Both bullpens would continue to deal, until the bottom of the 11th when the Scorpions Lansing finally got to Turk Wendall and Cairo scoring from first on a double walked it off for a 4-3 final. The screaming from Southlake could be heard all the way to Chicago, just as the sound of the Champagne bottles popping in Chicago could be hear all the way to the Monroeville Clubhouse.

Game #3: The sting of being eliminated from the Division Crown still hurting Monroe and it showed. Southlake exploded for 16 hits and 13 runs in a walk away Victory 13-3. Bagwell and Bichette went a combined 4-8 with 6 runs and 6 RBIs.
Game #4: Game four saw Southlake jump out to a 2-0 lead after one. Another blowout was coming. At least it was until Vlad Guerrero put the team on his back going 3-5 with his 58th Homerun of the year and 4 more RBIs giving him 156 on the year.

Monroeville showed they still have heart and are ready for the playoffs as a Wild Card team taking down the Scorpions 8-2 this afternoon. Andy Ashby got the win going all 9 innings scattering 8 hits and no more runs after the two unearned he surrendered in the first.

Game #5: With the Series up for grabs in game 5 Bichette decided it was his turn to show his offensive prowess, going 4-4 on the day. But in reality all the Scorpions stung the ball in a walk-away 13 to 5 victory.

Stephenson was a last minute starter as Southlake went for the Series victory did just enough going 7 innings. Rocker closed out the last two innings to bring his ERA under 6 finally. He really does stink.

Series Summary: Monroeville now controls their own fate. As their Wild Card Magic Number gets closer and closer they can begin to set up their pitching rotation for the playoffs.

With only 6 games left in the year Southlake is guaranteed to finish last in the Central. But this Series win may be enough to overtake a few teams in the AL and not finish absolutely dead last.

Final: Southlake 3 games / Monroeville 2
