California Quakes @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: The 1st place juggernaut Quakes head to the 2nd place Hounds, who are just looking to ease into a wildcard spot as the season winds down. There are always offensive fireworks when these two clubs meet up.
Game #1: The game doesn’t disappoint. California holds a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning. Bonds delivers a two-out pinch hit RBI double to tie it up at 5-5. Benitez comes on for the Hounds in the top of the 9th and proceeds to give up four runs, highlighted by a bases loaded double from Olerud. Benitez, a 22XYW, now has a 5.64 ERA on the season, more than three full points higher than his 2.61 in the actual 2000 season (he has given up 15 more runs in 17 fewer innings). Myers stays on to close it down for California and the final is 9-5.

WP: Myers (6-2)
LP: Benitez (3-10)

Game #2: Castle Rock again ties it up in the bottom of the 8th, this time thanks to a Polanco 2-run homer to tie it at 3-3. Both teams have squandered several opportunities, leaving lots of runners on base. It goes to extra innings and Salmon delivers a clutch two-out two-RBI double in the top of the 10th to give California the 5-3 lead. Graves stays on to finish it, and the final is 5-3. The Hounds bullpen lets them down again, with Wunsch taking the loss this time. Drew and Garciaparra have three hits apiece for the Quakes. The teams combined to leave 26 men on base.

WP: Graves (10-4)
LP: Wunsch (6-7)

Game #3: The Quakes erupt for four runs in the 7th to pull away in this one. Although Castle Rock outhits California by a 11-9 margin, the final is 8-4 Quakes. California walks 9 times against Dreifort and Brewington, and that proves to be the key. Bonds does deliver his 54th homer in a losing cause.

WP: Wolf (14-8)
LP: Dreifort (14-8)
S: Hoffman (19)

Game #4: The Hounds are licking their wounds as they hope to grab their first victory of the series. Instead, it is a vintage California Quakes beatdown, as they take it by a final score of 20-0! The Quakes explode for 26 hits, including 5 from David Segui, 4 from Olerud and 3 each from Alfonzo, Salmon, Fryman, Garciaparra and Erstad. Only one homer (Salmon). Let’s not forget that Burba, Maurer and Sparks combine on the shutout either. Joel Pineiro made his Hounds debut in relief, giving up 13 earned runs in 4 IP to save the bullpen.

WP: Burba (14-3)
LP: Rogers (7-12)

Game #5: Can the Hounds salvage some dignity after that shellacking? The short answer is no. Castle Rock does cut it to 4-3 heading into the 7th inning, but a 3-run homer from Segui gives California a 7-3 cushion. The final ends up being 8-4 as California takes the sweep against their division rivals.

WP: Chen (12-1)
LP: Elarton (7-11)

Series Summary: California is clearly the superior team in the Division, as they take the sweep and certainly put Castle Rock in their place.
