| Series Preview: | You know you have to bring your A game when you are hosting the Chicago Demolition. Chicago comes in with a 64-47 record, holding a two-game lead in the Central. Castle Rock enters with a 59-51 mark, 21.5 games behind California in the West, but four games up for the second wildcard spot. Let’s see how it goes. |
| Game #1: | Delgado and Bonds exchange solo homers in the first to get the series started. Sweeney puts Castle Rock in the driver’s seat with a 3 run homer in the bottom of the 3rd to give the Hounds a 4-2 lead. Canizaro tightens up with a solo shot in the 5th, making it 4-3.
Bonds delivers his second homer of the game in the bottom of the 7th, giving Castle Rock a two-run lead and a little bit of breathing room. Chicago gets one back off of Wunsch in the top of the 8th and it is 5-4. In the top of the 9th, Cirillo flies out for the first out, but Womack reaches on an error by Michael Barrett. Hocking then reaches on an error by Easley and it is 1st and 3rd with only one out. Pinch hitter Hansen walks and the bases are loaded for Renteria. He does a suicide squeeze and gets the run in. Higginson grounds out and we are tied at 5-5 heading into the bottom half of the 9th. With one out in the bottom of the 9th, Easley walks and steals second (trying to make up for that error in the top half). Gonzalez moves him over to 3rd with a ground out, and Bonds is intentionally walked to face Dye. Aybar gets Dye to fly out and we head to extras. Delgado leads off the top of the 10th with his second homer of the game (take that Barry). Nelson Cruz comes in for the bottom of the 10th and gets the Hounds in order. Quite a series opener. | Game #2: | Chicago gets another solo HR in the first inning, thanks to Higginson this time. But Bonds does Bonds things and gets a 2-run homer in the bottom half. It is tied 4-4 in the 5th, when Sweeney hits a two-run homer to make it 6-4. Easley extends that with a 3-run shot in the 6th, making it 9-4. But, Chicago will not go away quietly, as they add 2 in the 7th, 1 in the 8th and cut the lead to 9-8 with a homer from Nevin to start the 9th. But, Benitez comes on to close it down, and gets it done this time! The final is 9-8, Castle Rock and the series is tied 1-1.

| Game #3: | We now hit the meat of the Chicago rotation, as Pedro is on the mound for the Demolition. Chicago breaks through for five runs in the second (4 unearned) and we think this one might be over already. But, Castle Rock does cobble together two runs off of Pedro in the bottom half to give a glimmer of hope. But, that hope is quickly quashed as the Demolition light up Dreifort, getting 10 runs through 4+ innings.
Chicago keeps piling it on, scoring 6 in the 5th inning and 8 (!) in the 9th to make it a 24-4 final! Stewart and Nevin homer for Chicago and Canizaro gets 4 hits. The game was never really in doubt. WP: Martinez (19-1) |
| Game #4: | In another pitching mismatch we have Clemens vs. Carpenter (he’ll be good in a few years). Carpenter is doing alright through 4 IP, giving up just two runs. Bonds cuts the lead in half with a homer in the bottom of the 4th, making it 2-1, and Clayton ties it up with a 2-out RBI single. But, Chicago explodes for 5 runs in the 6th, to take an 8-2 lead.
That would be all that Chicago needed in this one, as they take it by 14-5 final, continuing their pummeling of Castle Rock’s pitching staff. Nevin had four RBI and Renteria supplied 3 RBI and a HR. WP: Clemens (7-4) |
| Game #5: | Castle Rock is looking to salvage some dignity in this one, as they send out Kenny Rogers to face Pichardo. Both pitchers are doing well through five innings, as the score is tied 2-2, which is a nice relief from the last two games for the Castle Rock faithful.
Chicago adds a run in the top of the 6th and 8th and that is all they would need, as their bullpen tosses 3.2 of shutout baseball. Castle Rock threatens in the 9th, but can’t get a run. The final is 4-2, Chicago. WP: Pichardo (4-2) |
| Game #6: | Castle Rock hoping to salvage some respect here, looking to get a second series win after losing three in a row. Chicago going for the dominant 5-1 series victory. Chicago starts off with a bang, scoring 5 runs before Castle Rock can even get an out, highlighted by a 3-run Shannon Stewart homer.
As they have all series, Chicago piles it on, scoring 16 runs on 17 hits and 8 walks. Nevin goes 4-5 with 4 RBI for the Demolition and McKnights nabs a quality start for the win. The final is 16-4, Chicago. WP: McKnight (1-1) |

| Game #4: | Titans call on Gardner (11-3, 4.59) to turn things around and the Bums go with Gooden (1-3, 4.79). In the 1st Bums Thomas singled, Hidalgo was beamed and Vanderwall doubled them home. Encarnacion added a double to make it 3-0. Titans Hammonds got one back with a solo shot in the 2nd. In the 3rd Bums Koskie drew a walk, Thomas doubled and Hidalgo went yard. Bums 6-1. In the 4th Titans Fullmer responded with a solo shot. In the 5th The Titans filled the bases with one out. And Fullmer grounded into a double play. In the bottom half Thomas hit a 2-run shot with Koskie aboard. 8-2. But in the next at bat Lee goes yard with Hammonds aboard to keep the Titans in the game. 8-4. Cruz followed with a solo shot. And in the 8th after walks to Estalella and Nixon, Justice went yard to tie the game. In the 9th Titans Hammonds doubled. Lee singled. And Cruz singled to give the Titans the lead, 9-8. In the bottom half, Thomas and d Hidalgo drew walks. But the Bums could not convert. The Bums gave up a 6-1 lead, sham on them. | Game #1: | A Todd Helton 3-run shot in the 1st opened the game up for Harper Woods. However, Mike Sirotka settled down and only gave up 1 more through 6.1 IP thanks to an RBI by Bill Mueller in the 5th. Portland scored 7 in the middle innings with help from a 2-run Will Clark home run a 2 double day from Damon Buford. Gabe White came on in the 9th for Portland holding a 7-4 lead which saw him give up a 2-run home run to Scott Servais making it a close game. He managed to close it out for a Portland 7-6 win.

| Game #2: | A bounce back game for the Expos as they take game 2 by a score of 4-2. It was all quiet for the first 4 innings until Harper Woods put up 4 in innings 5-7 with a 2-run home run by Marquis Grissom and RBI singles for Barry Larkin and Todd Walker. Kerry Wood was strong for Harper Woods giving up just a solo shot in the 6th to Damon Buford. He struck out 8 and only gave up 2 hits in 5.1 IP. Will Clark got his own solo shot in the 8th but as a team could only muster up 4 hits all night.

| Game #3: | This was a close game until the bottom of the 8th. Harper Woods got 6.2 of 2 run ball (1 earned) out of Eldred but when Rincon came back out in the 8th with a 3-2 lead, the team imploded. After walking in the tying run, an error by Feliz as he threw home completely changed the complexion. Jose Valentin ends up hitting a grand slam and Portland puts up 8 in the 8th to win 10-3.

| Game #4: | Back and forth, back and forth we go so far in the series. Harper Woods gets back in the win column with a 9-6 victory. The bats came out hot thanks to 5 combined doubles for Barry Larkin and Todd Helton. Larkin goes 4-6 in the game, while Helton goes 2-4. Danny Bautista provided a 3-run home run and the Portland pitching just couldn’t get it right. Sandy Alomar had 3 hits for Portland as both teams combined for 27 hits! It was not a great night to be standing on the mound.

| Game #5: | Finally a team wins 2 in a row. Harper Woods takes this pitching battle 3-2 thanks to a blown save in the 9th by Gabe White. Mussina goes 7.2 IP giving up 6 hits and 2 runs. Kile goes 8.1 IP giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. He came out in the 9th with a 2-1 lead, got the first man and then Helton doing what he does best ripped a 1 out double. It went downhill as White came out to try and close the door but walked DeShields and then proceeded to give up a 2-run double to Bill Mueller. Mecir who can on in the 8th for Harper Woods had a clean 9th and stole this one away.

| Game #6: | How do you win a series? You throw 3 runners out at home. Harper Woods had their outfielders playing with their arms on fire. Grissom, Bautista, and Kingsale all threw a man out at the plate which helped the team take a 9-8 win. The starters got rocked again and both only saw 5 IP on their record with a combined 12 runs given up. Every player that started got a hit but Bill Mueller for Harper Woods but Scott Servais had the big hit in the 7th to give the 9-8 lead on a 2-run shot. In a 5 run 5th for Portland, Todd Zeile hit a 3-run home run and Eric Owens fell a home run shy of the cycle. In the 9th with Will Clark on 1st, Todd Zeile put one in the gap on a hit and run where Marquis Grissom came up through and gunned the tying run down at home. It saved the game and the series for the Expos.

| Game #5: | Both teams battle hard in this one. Michigan gets 2 in the 1st, another in the 4th and then 3 in the 5th for a 6-0 lead. Guzman (2), Williams (2), Palmeiro (3) and Ripken (2) lead the 13 hit attack. Then the Gas Hornets get a 3 run homer from Garrett Anderson (25) in the bottom of the 5th in a 4 run inning, then they add another in the 8th, but Bob Wickman closes it for the Mauraders in the 9th to preserve the win.
