California Quakes @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: This might be the last chance that Castle Rock has of catching California in the battle for the first wild-card spot. California sits three games ahead of the Hounds in the standings, although the teams have the 2nd and 3rd best records in the AL. They are 12 and 15 games, respectively, behind Fort Worth in the West.
Game #1: The first seven innings were dramatic, as California raced out to a 4-1 lead, but Castle Rock took a 5-4 lead on a pinch-hit grand slam by Wendell Magee in the bottom of the 7th to take a 5-4 lead. But, the wheels fell off for the Castle Rock bullpen, as California exploded for 6 runs in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to take a 12-5 final. The Castle Rock defense really let them down, as 8 of the 12 runs were unearned on 3 errors. California did notch 18 hits too.

WP: Boyd (1-0)
LP: Quantrill (5-3)

Game #2: Castle Rock loads the bases with one out in both the first and second innings, but fails to score a run. Meanwhile, California takes a 2-0 lead highlighted by a Rafael Bournigal homer. And, California does take advantage of the bases being loaded in the 5th, as they plate four runs to take a 6-0 lead. But, Castle Rock picks up 2 in each of the 5th, 6th and 7th to tie it at 6-6. It stays that way until the bottom of the 10th, when Fernando Tatis delivers a walk-off two-run HR off of Trevor Hoffman to give Castle Rock the 8-6 victory. The Hounds bullpen turned things around in this game, pitching 5.2 of shutout ball. California had a lot of guys on base again, getting 9 walks and 9 hits. But they left 12 men on, while Castle Rock “only” left 10.

WP: Benitez (5-4)
LP: Hoffman (6-3)

Game #3: Another back-and-forth affair, as Castle Rock jumps out to a 5-2 lead, but California ties it up at 5-5 in the 6th. But, Castle Rock’s bats get the job done, with Bonds going 3-5, and Tatis 3-4, just a double shy of the cycle.

WP: Carpenter (9-4)
LP: Boyd (1-1)
S: Benitez (27)

Game #4: California jumps out to a big early lead and never looks back in a laugher. Hamilton contributes 4 RBI and Gerald Williams hits a HR to back up a strong performance from Villone. Kenny Rogers gets roasted in this one, giving up 9 ER in 5 IP on 12 hits and 3 walks. The final is 11-2, California and the series is knotted at 2-2.

WP: Villone (11-7)
LP: Rogers (13-9)

Game #5: Alfonzo delivers a three-run dinger to give California an early 3-0 lead. Meanwhile, Gil Meche has picked two Hounds off of first base, as Castle Rock is demonstrating what not to do on the basepaths. Castle Rock is able to cut it to 4-2 and get the tying run to the plate in the 9th, but Trevor Hoffman closes the door. California wins the series, 3-2.

WP: Meche (7-4)
LP: Hermanson (14-8)
S: Hoffman (28)

Series Summary: California takes 3 out of 5 on the road to extend their first wildcard lead in the AL. Either way, the teams both appear playoff bound.

Loss: Buddy Carlyle 2-2 (9.69)
Game #5: Phil Nevin has a Grand Slam, Edgar Renteria & Carlos Delgado chip in with 2 RBIs each. However, it was the Pete Harnisch show as Harnisch goes 1 batter over the minimum, allowing only 2 walks. Yes that’s right Pete Harnichs throws a No-Hitter before the home Crowd.

Final Score: Chicago 9 – Stockton 0

Win: Pete Harnisch 12-11 (4.92)

Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: Santa Rosa tries to pound on cellar-dweller Hampton and move into a clear lead in the currently deadlocked NL East.
Game #1: Lotsa hits (33), lots of homers (6) and lots of runs (26) with Hampton surprisingly coming out on top 15-11 after disrespecting the entire Bums’ staff led by John Smoltz. Ten runs against Hampton is to be expected given that they have one pitcher graded higher than 5 remaining. Catcher Kelly Stinnett headed the hit parade for both teams with a single and a grand slam and 5 RBIs. Newly acquired Joey Hamilton pitched like crap (3 runs in 3 innings) as expected but held on for the save. Neifi Perez had three hits for Santa Rosa.
Game #2: Pat Rapp was super stingy allowing just four hits in a 4-0 win for the Bums. Neifi Perez, Richard Hidalgo and Roberto Alomar each had two hits for the winners. Henry Rodriguez had half of Hampton’s hits.
Game #3: The absence of a bullpen (or any pitching for that matter) proved to be the Achilles heel for Hampton as the Bums came from behind with two late runs to take the game 2-1. Jose Rosado fanned nine in getting the win with Steve Karsay getting the final out to get his 31st save of the season. Richard Hidalgo paced the Bums with two hits.
Game #4: A bullpen (or lack thereof) collapse big time for Hampton as the relievers futzed up what was a pretty good 8-inning start by Brian Bohanon and gave up 7 runs in the top of the 9th as Richard Hidalgo and company stormed back to win 8-6. Hidalgo homered, drove in two runs and walked twice. Steve Karsay got another one-out save for Santa Rosa.
Game #5: Juan Acevedo pitched much better than he had any right to and allowed just one earned run in 6.1 innings in a 4-2 Hampton win. Richard Hidalgo had another great game with three hits and one RBI with Juan Encarnacion missing the cycle by the ever-elusive triple. Brian Daubach had three hits for Hampton. Almost as surprising as Acevedo’s good start was Eric Gunderson getting a save with 2.2 innings of shutout relief.
Series Summary: Go figure. Hampton actually went toe-to-toe with Santa Rosa and the much better team only took 3 of 5.
