Newark Bears @ Hampton Huskies |
|
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | The Newark Bears decide to slum it for a week and travel to Hampton for six games. |
| Game #1: | The Huskies successfully poisoned the Bears’ Gatorade cooler and squeaked out a 3-1 win over Newark thanks to some solid pitching from starter Francisco Cordova and Tom Gordon notching his first save of the season. Jeromy Burnitz hit his 24th homer of the year for Hampton. |
| Game #2: | Juan Gonzalez had three hits and drove in two runs as the Bears brought in their own bottled Gatorade and downed the Huskies 4-2. Gonzalez hit his 24th of the year while Jose Canseco added his 21st. Bill Spiers doubled twice for Hampton. |
| Game #3: | The Bears took turns pounding Rolando Arrojo and Mike DeJean as part of a lovely 14-0 bitch-slapping of the Huskies. Mike Piazza (blechh) led the carnage with four hits (two HR) and five RBIs. Ben Grieve and SloMo Vaughn also homered. |
| Game #4: | Bill Mueller drove in a couple of runs and Tom Gordon somehow managed to get his 2nd save of the year in a 5-3 Hampton win. To say the Huskies dodged a bullet would be an understatement as starter Joe Nathan gave up homers to Tony Fernandez, Ben Grieve and Mo Vaughn – all with no one aboard. |
| Game #5: | Jose Canseco and Mo Vaughn each launched their 22nd homers of the season in a 6-4 win y Newark. Carl Pavano ended his ineffective night early by getting ejected for plonking Tony Fernandez in the nether regions with a pitch in the 4th inning. Fernandez, of course, was unharmed as he has no balls. |
| Game #6: | For the second straight game, a Hampton starting pitcher doing poorly exited in dramatic fashion – this time it was Francisco Cordova whose arm blew like a cheap tire in the 5th inning and put him out of action for 3 weeks. Oh yeah – and Newark won 8-3. Usual suspects Mike (Born to DH) Piazza hit two homers with Mo Vaughn chipping in with one. |
| Series Summary: | Newark wins 4 of 6 begging the question: how could the lousy Hampton team win twice? |
