Hollywood Vampires @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Preview: 2nd vs 3rd place.
Series Summary: Winnipeg and Hollywood split 6 games.

California Quakes @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: California visits Castle Rock for a six-game set between the 2nd and 3rd place teams. Castle Rock enters the series two games up over California. The Quakes sent a direct franchise file….do they have some tricks up their sleeves???? 🙂
Game #1: Paul Abbott vs. Andy Pettitte in Game 1, and it’s a pitcher’s duel. The teams exchange runs in the 5th (unearned for Pettitte) and Damian Miller delivers a solo shot in the 6th to give California a 2-1 lead. But, Luis Gonzalez knocks a 2-run HR to give the lead to Castle Rock and Clayton adds another to make it 4-2. Undeterred, California gets 3 runs in the top of the 7th, highlighted by a Damian Miller HR (that’s two on the game) and retakes a 5-4 lead. Castle Rock gets runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out to start the 9th. But, Embree gets Snow to pop out and Ben Davis to strike out. With two outs, Easley drives one to the gap, but it is caught. California holds on for the 5-4 victory.

WP: Abbott (6-3)
LP: Quantrill (4-2)
S: Embree (1)

Game #2: Burba vs. Rogers in Game 2, and Matt Mieske opens the scoring for the Hounds with a solo HR in the bottom of the 1st. Snow extends the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the 3rd with a 3-run shot. Dye tacks on two more with a home run of his own in the 4th. Burba is chased after just 3.2 IP and down 6-0. That is how it ends, as Rogers throws a gem for Castle Rock, going 9 innings and allowing just 3 hits.

WP: Rogers (9-2)
LP: Burba (5-8)

Game #3: California jumps all over Chris Carpenter, plating four runs before he can get an out in the first, highlighted by a Nomar 3-run homer. Carpenter gets pulled after giving up 11 hits and 5 walks in 6 IP, and the Quakes are up 7-1 going into the 7th. The two teams exchange meaningless runs after that and California wins it in a landslide, 12-3. The Quakes smashed 19 hits, including homers from Greer, Salmon and Nomar, and also benefitted from 5 walks.

WP: Fernandez (7-4)
LP: Carpenter (4-3)

Game #4: Hermanson vs. Meche as the Hounds try to even the series. It’s a tight game, but the Hounds bullpen does a great job to keep the Quakes off the bases, and it is a 3-2 Hounds victory. Huskey is the offensive hero for Castle Rock with 2 RBI. The series is knotted at 2-2.

WP: Hermanson (9-2)
LP: Meche (1-2)
S: Benitez (18)

Game #5: Clayton puts Castle Rock up early with a 2-run homer. The Quakes get runners in scoring position in each of the first four innings (including three times to 3rd base), but can’t capitalize on any of the chances. Bonds delivers a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the 5th to extend the Hounds lead to 4-0. California finally breaks through on Dreifort in the top of the 6th with a 2-run Matt Williams HR and add two more in the 7th to tie it up. Jermaine Dye gives Castle Rock a 5-4 lead with a solo shot in the bottom of the 8th. Benitez makes it interesting in the 9th, allowing two men on, but he gets Nomar to pop up to the catcher to end the threat, and the final is 5-4, Castle Rock.

WP: Quantrill (5-2)
LP: Watson (5-1)
S: Benitez (19)

Game #6: It’s a rematch of Game 1, as Abbott faces off vs. Pettitte. California starts off strong with a Greer triple followed by a Alfonzo single to take the 1-0 lead. Not to be outdone, Tatis and Snow lead off the bottom of the first with back-to-back doubles to tie it up, and add one more on Luis Gonzalez RBI single. It is all California after that, as they take advantage of Castle Rock errors to take a 6-2 lead in the 4th inning. The teams exchange one run each after that (another unearned for Castle Rock) and the final is 7-3, California.

WP: Abbott (7-3)
LP: Pettitte (3-5)
S: Chen (1)

Series Summary: Not surprisingly, the #2 and #3 teams in the AL West split the series, 3-3.

CRABS 5 / 8 / 0
WP – Guzman (4-9)
LP – Dempster (4-4)

Game #2: Garrett Anderson slugs a grand slam to cap a 5-run 6th to put the Gas Hornets in front. But the lead was short-lived, because Orlando Merced answered with a grand slam of his own in the bottom of the 6th. CRABS 9 / 13 / 1
WP – Boehringer (4-3)
LP – Chouinard (1-3)

Guzman goes the distance, allowing only the Casey hit and an unearned run. He did walk 8, but it didn’t matter. Tino Martinez hit his 23rd homerun and knocked in 4 to provide the Gas Hornets’ offense.
