| Series Preview: | NL East top ender – Steel City, comes to Manhattan for what almost was a climactic series, but the Sluggers wrapped things up last week and gave a few stars some rest this week. Manhattan managed to do the same, but still fielded a good representation of who they are – especially that TINO guy. He had another probable POW outing. |
| Game #1: | Rick Reed goes 5 innings give up a single in the 1st and that was it. 5 pitchers closed out the final 4 innings, 3 more Sluggers singled, that’s it. Derek Jeter homers (6), Tino Martinez doubles in 1, and a host of Gas Hornets garnered 10 hits and 10 runs for the easy win. | Game #2: | A much tighter contest in game two but Matt Morris manages to scatter 6 hits in 6 innings and the Sluggers only got 1 run out if, a Dan Wilson SF in the 6th. Manhattan could only get to Ben McDonald once, but it was a 3 run Tino Martinez homer (41) in the 1st (he singled later). Those runs were it as the starters and bullpens held firm the rest of the game. Morris gets the win and gets his 20th of the season! Turned out to be a good 1st round pick this year. | Game #3: | Rusty Greer homers (28) in the 1st, Shawon Dunston homers in the 5th and Kevin Orie hits a SF in the 6th for 3 Sluggers runs. However, Tino Martinez drives in TEN (10) runs on his own. 3 homers including a Grand Slam to give him 44 for the year. The rest of the team also outscored Steel City with 4 more runs. Kevin Foster got the 1st 5 innings and 6 relievers finished it – but Carlos Reyes is the 2nd Gas Hornets pitcher to go down with a week-long injury. | Game #4: | This game starts like the rest with lots and lots of hits – this time by the Sluggers! Tim Wakefield felt like he was tossing batting practice as the knuckler didn’t dance and he was tagged for 7 hits and a walk in 2 innings – and the sluggers score 4 quick runs – 3 in the 1st. Rusty Greer manages to get 4 hits (of the team’s 15), 3 singles, and a double. Tony Gwenn, Mark Grace, and Micky Morandini each get 2 hits. Gas Hornets attempt a chip back getting 1 in the 1st and another in the 2nd and it’s 4-2 after 3. In the 4th, the Gas Hornets got their 4th hit – a 2 run homer by Garrett Anderson (5), and the game is tied. Then Joey Hamilton gives up a homer to Tino Martinez (45) in the 6th and the Gas Hornets find themselves with a 5-4 lead. In the 8th, Dave Hollins makes it 6-4 Manhattan when he homers (15) off reliever Chuck Finley. Meanwhile, Brian Moehler (5 IP, 7 hits, 0 runs) and Tom Martin and John Wetteland stifle the Sluggers and Manhattan gets the improbable win. | Game #5: | Jack McDowell fires up his arm to start this game and Kevin Tapani is called on to pick up some innings as the Gas Hornets are a bit tired. Tony Gwynn opens with a single and Rusty Greer brings him around for 1-0 Sluggers lead in the 1st. However, the Gas Hornets tie in the bottom half on a Tino Martinez SF. Kevin Orie finds the proper hitting stroke in this game and cranks out 4 hits (4 for 4) – 2 doubles, 2 singles and he drives in the go-ahead run in the 4th. With the Sluggers up 2-1 in the 5th, McDowell and then reliever Mark Mohler, lose what semblance of abilities and they combine to give up 7 runs in the 5th (including some walks for runs AND a 3 run Tino Martinez homer (46), yikes! Dan Wilson drives in one in the 6th, but Benito Santiago (2 hits, 3 RBIs in the game) homers (11) for 1 in the 7th and Manhattan finishes their onslaught with another in the 8th. | Game #6: | Game 6 started in style with Tino Martinez hitting a 2 run homer (47) in a 3 run first-off Sluggers starter Chuck Finley (who seemed like he pitched in almost all the games). Unfortunately, he could only get through 1 inning as he left the mound and the report after the game – 11 days injured. Not good timing. Getting back to the game – the 1st inning Gas Hornets heroics were their last in this game. The Sluggers take charge in the 2nd with a 2 run Dan Wilson homer (11). And then in the 3rd, the Sluggers amass a nice big 5 runs. Kevin Orie knocks in 2, Shawon Dunston knocks in 2. Tony Gwynn gets 3 hits and 2 RBIs and finished the season batting .355!! Manny Aybar was useless (2 IP, 7 hits, 7 runs, 4 walks!). Steel City easily avoided the sweep in this one. Chuck McElroy goes 4 innings (1 hit) in relief of the injured Finley and gets the win. | Series Summary: | Well, the Gas Hornets finished the season with 107 wins taking 5 of six, but still finished 6 games back of Steel City. BUT 107 wins was about 30-40 more than we expected when we broke spring training to start the season. BUT one thing I hadn’t been paying attention to was Tino’s totals. He drove in 163 runs this year! And he’s at or near the top in basically every good offensive category! Talk about carrying a team! And this week – well he goes 10 for 22, double, 7 homers, a walk, 10 runs, and 22 (TWENTY TWO) RBIs! That’s a .455/.478/1.455 slash with OPS of 1.933! Might qualify for POW!Fans loved this week but they HOPE it continues into the playoffs!! We will see. |

If Harper Woods wins 3, Chicago & Detroit would be tied with 100 wins each & the division would go to Chicago who had a 13-9 record over the Crime on the year. It was an exciting finish down the stretch & the closeness of it all falls back to the September 7th – 11th Series where Chicago swept Detroit. |

| Game #2: | Huskies pick Sanders (0-6, 12.42) for the mound and the Bums Jarvis (1-12). Huskies waste no time. In the 1st Counsel leadoff the game with a single, Mueller was beamed for Counsel’s indiscretion and so Cordero responded by going deep for a 3-run homer. The Huskies kept going with singles by Hatteberg, Surhof and Buford for another. Gutierrez kept the parade going with a single for a fifth run and Jarvis ended his season a bit early. Reliever Manzanillo immediately threw it past Thomas for a sixth run. Maddux relieved Manzanillo and gave up a single to Counsel, 7-0, and then decided to beam Mueller to gfill the bases and get pulled. Guthrie entered giving up a single to Burnitz for a couple more. BUT THEN Guthrie retired the next two. Oh, this isn’t batting practice. Huskies 9-0 after one half. Let’s see if Huskies Sanders can match his ERA. The carnage continued in the 2nd, but Mueller was allowed to hit. He dribbled one toward third and beat it out. Huskies 12-0. The Bums were clawing back until that five spot by the Huskies in the 8th. Oh Bums Thomas did smack three homers, but it didn’t hurt the Huskies. | Game #3: | Huskies call in Gordon (12-10, 3.47) to keep the momentum and the Bums Smoltz (17-8, 2.84) to stop it. In the 3rd Huskies Buford and Gutierrez singled and scored on a Counsel double. Followed by a Burnitz solo shot, 3-0. Followed by a Surhof single and a Hatteberg RBI double, 4-0. Bums get on the board with Alomar, Caminiti and Loretta singles in the 4th. Burnitz answered that with a homer in the first at bat in the 5th. Smoltz also uncorked one in the inning, 6-1. In the 8th Alomar, Thomas singled, Caminiti walked and Sanders went deep, GRAND SLAM, to make the it a one run game. | Game #6: | Huskies go for the series win with Belcher (10-15, 4.48) on the mound. Bums give Rosado (10-20, 4.77) a chance to redeem himself. With 2-out in the 3rd, Bums Alomar singled, stole and scored on a Thomas single. Thomas scored on a double by Caminiti. After a Cordero walk in the 6th the Huskies tied the game on a Rodriguez 2-run homer. Bums looked to get out of the inning on a Spehr fly to center, but Whiten dropped it. Huskies 3-2. Loretta leadoff the bottom half with a triple and pinch runner Perez scored on a Sanders triple. Tie game. Reset. With the infield drawn in Rosado blooped one over the infield for a run. Huskies quickly tie it up in their next at bat as Young singled, stole and scored on a Surhof single. Caminti singled in the bottom half and Perez doubled sending him to third. With 2-out Sanders ripped a double scoring the two, 6-4. The Huskies go to a string of pinch hitters in the 8th and fill the bases on bunches of Manzanilla walks. Daal replaced Manzanilla and got one out before yielding a 2-run single to Young and the ball game is tied again. This a nail biter, the last game of the season is going into extra innings for the ten fans in the stands. Huskies placed runners on first and second in the 12th and Young delivered with an RBI single. In the bottom half Hildalgo reached, pinch hitter Myers walked and White singled filling the bases with 1-out for Alomar. Infield in. Alomar bounces toward Gutierrez, who muffs it and both pinch runner Bautista and Myers touch home plate for the win.
