1990 ALL-STAR GAME
The 1990 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was held on Sunday, November 4th, 1990 in the home of the Clovis Cougars.
“Special recognition is given here to Kevin Weber & Kirk Weber for taking on the past All-Star Games Project as they will be playing these out and catching up not only the MWWL but some past MWBL All-Star Games as well. Thank you very much Kirk & Kevin for helping out with these projects. I hope you enjoy Baseball for Windows as much as we have done for the past 25 Years!”
30 Players from the American League & 30 players from the National League squared off in the 21st, MWWL All-Star Game. The American League has a 17 to 3 lead in the All-Star Games, would 1989 fair different?
Roger Clemens (26-4 1.66) & the American League Cy Young Award Winner vs. Bob Welch (26-4 2.30) the 1989 National League Cy Young Award Winner.
For the second straight All-Star Game, the Mid-West Winter League was dominated by pitching.
The game started out promising for hitters in the top of the first inning when the American League scored two runs. After reaching on a fielder’s choice, Eric Davis stole second base to move into scoring position. Then Fred McGriff singled down the right-field line to drive Davis in for the game’s first run. McGriff then came home when the next hitter Darryl Strawberry doubled down the right-field line, making it 2-0.
The two runs Bob Welch surrendered in the first inning were the only earned runs of the game, which unfortunately set him up for the loss. Strawberry’s double was one of only two extra-base hits for the AL.
Kevin Mitchel had the other. The only extra-base hit for the National League was off the bat of Dave Magadan when he delivered a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning. The offense was scarce, with no player reaching base more than once for either team.
While many pitchers threw well, the most memorable pitching performance belonged to Nolan Ryan. The 43-year-old struck out the side in the fourth inning, taking down Tony Pena, Rafael Palmeiro, & Roberto Alomar, all swinging.
Fred McGriff was the key offensive player in the content, going 1-1 with a double, 1 run, and 1 RBI. Dwight Gooden was the winning pitcher. Dennis Eckersley locked the save down for the AL in the ninth inning, surrendering one hit.
FINAL SCORE: American League 2 – National League 0
All-TIME RECORD: American League 18 – National League 3
1990 ALL-STAR GAME MVP – Fred McGriff – 1 for 1 with an RBI & a Run Scored in the game.
