1989 ALL-STAR GAME

The 1989 Mid-West Winter League All-Star Game was held on Sunday, November 5th, 1989 in the home of the Janesville Juggernauts.

“Special recognition is given here to Kevin Weber & Kirk Weber for taking on the past All-Star Games Project as they will be playing these out and catching up not only the MWWL but some past MWBL All-Star Games as well.   Thank you much Kirk & Kevin for helping out with these projects.  I hope you enjoy Baseball for Windows as much as we have done for the past 25 Years!”

30 Players from the American League & 30 players from the National League squared off in the 20th MWWL All-Star Game.  The American League has a 16 to 3 lead in the All-Star Games, would 1989 fair different?

Tom Candiotti (20-7 1.80) & the National League Cy Young Award Winner vs. Sid Fernandez (21-5  1.74) the 1989 American League Cy Young Award Winner.

The 1989 All-Star game was an intense pitching battle between 20 hurlers from both teams. In the eighth inning, George Bell hit a one-out double to left-center. The next batter, Mike Scioscia, hit a ground ball deep in the hole between short and third. Dickie Thon made a nice backhanded stab at it, but his throw was wild to first and sailed over Mark Grace’s head. By the time right fielder, Bip Roberts retrieved the ball Bell had crossed the plate with the game’s only run.

Jeff Russell came on in the ninth inning to nail down the save and a 1-0 American League victory. Bill Landrum was credited with the win for the A.L. and Tom Henke took the loss for the N.L. No batter or pitcher recorded more than one hit, although the A.L. did leave 10 on base.

The most exciting (and controversial) play of the game came in the fourth inning. The National League’s Bo Jackson doubled to left-center and tried to stretch the hit into a triple. As the ball rattled on the warning track, center-fielder Kirby Puckett fired a laser to third base and nailed Jackson.

For the American League, Lou Whitaker reached base twice, going 1 for 2 with a walk. The N.L.’s hitting leaders were Ruben Sierra and Alvin Davis, who each were 1 for 1 with a double. No pitcher on either side surrendered an earned run.

FINAL SCORE: American League 1 – National League 0

All-TIME RECORD: American League 17 – National League 3
