| Series Preview: | An NL East battle for scraps with Steel City travelling northeast to square off against the Hampton Huskies for five games with only a few weeks to go in this lost season. |
| Game #1: | Sluggers’ starter John Smiley had some trouble keeping the ball in the park, but Hampton starter Doug Drabek had even more trouble not outright sucking the big one as Steel City beat up on the Huskies’ pitcher for a 5-2 win.
The Sluggers got 10 hits off Drabek (5-7) before he left after the 5th inning but by then all the damage had been done. The Sluggers had only one extra base hit in the game – a double by ex-Huskies’ Mickey Morandini – but they strung together single after single in the 2nd inning and turned it into four runs. Tim Naehring, Tony Eusebio and Morandini each had two hits for Steel City with the latter two driving in a pair of runs each. Mickey Tettleon (26) and Jose Hernandez (16) clubbed home runs for Hampton of Smiley (9-6). Curtis Leskanic (9) tossed two perfect innings for the save. |
| Game #2: | the bases loaded to bring in Joe Girardi and give Hampton an 8-7 win.
Lewis’ single (his 3rd hit of the game) came off Dustin HErmanson (0-1) who was the 7th pitcher used by Steel City in the game. Steel City forced the game to go into extra innings by scoring runs in the top of the 8th and 9th on a homer by Tony Eusebio (2) off TJ Matthews and and RBI single by Tim Naehring. Eusebio, Tom Goodwin, Tim Raines, and Mark Grace each had three hits for Steel City which scored three unearned runs in the 5th inning on a Jim Eisenreich dropped fly ball and then picked up another unearned run in the 8th thanks to a throwing error by Mark Lewis. Al Martin had four hits for Hampton (all singles) while Lewis had three and drove in two runs. Joe Girardi (5) homered off Steve Sparks with the bases empty in the 4th. |
| Game #3: | The Hampton Huskies churned out 16 hits as they pummeled Greg Swindell and Company 9-3 to take the series lead.
Swindell (4-10) lasted just five outs and allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits including a monster bash by Dave Hollins (9) in the 1st inning. Hollins added two single later on and drove in five runs on the day. Omar Daal provided the Sluggers with almost four innings of shutout relief but eventually ran out of gas and was replaced by Curtis Leskanic who was less than stellar. He gave up homers to Eric Young (4) and Mike Stanley (9). Young, Stanley, Hollins and BRian McRae each had three hits for Hampton. Arthur Rhodes improved to 4-7 on the year. He gave up three runs on six hits in six innings. He struck out five and walked just one. |
| Game #4: | Hampton’s offense continued to roll capitalizing on errors by Tim Naehring and Scott Fletcher in an 8-run 4th inning as they went on to win 9-6 over Steel City.
Steel City didn’t have a monopoly on shitty fielding in this game, but were only able to generate one unearned run as a result of three errors by Hampton (Mike Stanley dropped pop up, Jose Oquendo booted grounder, Tom Gordon dropped toss to first base). Naehring tried hard to redeem himself by getting three hits on the day including his fourth homer of the season and driving in three runs. Rusty Greer and Tom Goodwin each also had two hits for Steel City. Steve Ontiveros (5-8) had a start to forget as he allowed eight runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks in just 3.1 innings including issuing a bases loaded walk to Brian McRae in the 4th. Tom Gordon (6-8) was lucky to have the offensive support as he continued to pitch like a putz and allowed six runs (five earned) on 9 hits in six innings. He emerged from the game with a gut-wrenching 6.69 ERA. Ugh. For Hampton, Mickey Tettleton (27) went deep as he lumbered towards the 30-homer plateau. Al Martin doubled and drove in two runs. |
| Game #5: | Hampton’s bats cooled but were not really much needed thanks to Bobby Jones who went seven strong innings and limited the Sluggers to just two runs as the Huskies edged Steel City 3-2.
Brian McRae (7) and Mike Stanley (10) homered for Hampton. Tim Naehring had two hits including a triple for Steel City. Jaime Navarro (8-9) pitched decently for Steel City but still got saddled with the loss thanks to Jones whose Jekyll/Hyde season continued with JJekyll showing up against the Sluggers in this one. Navarro gave up all three Hampton runs but only allowed four hits and three walks in six innings. Jones (11-10) gave up seven hits and a walk while striking out three Sluggers for Hampton. |
| Series Summary: | A surprising 4 of 5 wins by Hampton albeit at this point pretty meaningless and only hurts next year’s draft position. |

| Game #4: | As they did in Games 1 and 2, Portland jumps all over the Hounds starter, Bryan Rekar this time and take a 6-0 lead after two innings. Willie Banks steps in admirably for the Hounds in relief of Rekar, and the Hounds bats wake up a little bit, but it is too little, too late. The final is 13-15 Mavericks. | Game #1: | Manhattan takes the opener 2-0 even though the Bums outhit the Gas Hornets 7-4. Kevin Appier (L 11-7) goes 6, gives up 3 hits, 2 runs (1 unearned) – Robby Alomar error. But Glenn Dishman (W 4-7) scatters 7 hits (2 by Reggie Sanders) and blanks the Bums for 8.1. Bob Patterson gets the last 2 outs for save # 12. |
| Game #2: | Bums come back with a vengance smacking 11 hits and score 6 runs whiles John Smoltz (W 14-4) limits Manhattan to 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 innings. Ken Caminiti has 2 hits including homer #26 and Robby Alomar gets 3 hits (run and rbi) to pace the attack. LeTroy Hawkins gets the loss (3-4). |
| Game #3: | Santa Rosa keeps it up as William VanLandingham paces the pitchers (W 10-5) with a 6 hit, 1 run performance over 6 innings. He does give up a solo homer to Tino Martinez (31). Ken Caminit cracks a 3 run homer (27) in the 3rd for all the Bums scoring – hit off Sterling Hitchcock (L 6-9) and that was enough in the 3-1 Santa Rosa win. Rick Aguilera pitches the 9th for his 32nd save. |
| Game #4: | Tempo of play changes in game 4 – teams trade 2 runs each in the 2nd. Then the Bums plate 4 runs in the 3rd – all the runs off Shawn Boskie, who has been the man on the mound of late for Manhattan. His teammates respond scoring 5 in the bottom of the 3rd for a 7-6 lead after 3. Greg Myers clubs a 3 run homer (4) in the 3rd – and gets 2 hits in the game. Frank Thomas goes 5 for 5 – but it wasn’t enough as the Bums score 7 times total on 12 hits, but the Gas Hornets crank out 17 hits and score 10 runs for a 10-7 win. And they get the 10 runs with no homers. Mike Fetters takes the loss (0-2) as Chuck Finley was chased off the mound in the 3rd. Rick Reed (1-0) gets the win in relief for Manhattan. |
| Game #5: | With the series knotted at 2-2 – this game meant a lot for both teams. Manhattan has been playing for pride, short of pitching, and actually winning a lot lately on high potent offense. Knocking off the 1st play team would be fun. Santa Rosa wants to lock up the East as soon as they can – their magic number is down to 7 and they’d like it go lower. Gas Hornets get up 4-0 after 4 but Santa Rosa comes back with 1 in the 5th and then a 4 run 8th to steal the lead and go up 5-4. Frank Thomas drives in 2 during the rally. Santa Rosa cranks out 15 hits in getting those 5 runs. Mike James comes in to pitch the 8th and he gives up 2 homers – PH 2 run homer by Alex Cole (1) and a PH homer by Garrett Anderson (1) and 3 runs and the Gas Hornets regain the lead, 7-5. Mike Butcher comes in to pitch the 9th for Manhattan and gets the save (2). Dave Martinez (5) also homered for Manhattan. Mike James gets the loss (4-1) and blown save #1. Matt Mantei gets the win (1-1). |
| Series Summary: | Gas Hornets take the series 3-2 and now head out on the road for the rest of the season. Santa Rosa goes to Hampton before finishing the season at home.
Well, Bob Patterson and Matt Mantei are not feeling well and will be off the roster the rest of the season. And Jason Grimsley will be watching from the dugout the next couple of weeks as he’s bummed up. Santa Rosa suffered a couple of injuries during the week, but none carry over – Mike Macfarlane suffered the big 5 day injury – but that happened in game 1 so he’s all rested up and ready to go! |
