Portland Mavericks @ Castle Rock Hounds
Series Preview:  The struggling Mavericks come to Castle Rock to see if they can straighten the ship.
Game #1:  Donne Wall faces Gil Heredia in a clash of titans in Game 1. Portland strikes early and often, taking a 5-1 lead off of a Zeile 3-run shot in the 5th. The Hounds get one back in the 6th to make it 5-2. Dougherty throws gasoline on the fire in relief, making it 8-2 Mavericks. Dougherty stays out for punishment and gives up three more. Final score, Portland 11, Castle Rock 3.

WP: Heredia (1-2)
LP: Wall (0-1)

Game #2:  Pavlik vs. Rogers in a better pitching battle in Game 2. Portlands hops on Rogers quickly for 3 in the second inning. But, Castle Rock matches them in the 3rd with a 2-run, 2-out JT Snow double. Rogers is walking guys left and right with 6 through 6 innings and two wild pitches, including a run-scoring one that gives Portland the 4-3 lead. Castle Rock can’t break through the Portland bullpen and they hold on for the 4-3 win.

WP: Pavlik (3-2)
LP: Rogers (2-4)
S: Percival (5)

Game #3:  Castle Rock feeling desperate, as they fall under .500 on the year with that last loss. It’s Steve Avery vs. Andy Pettitte on the mound. Castle Rock strikes first with three unearned runs in the second inning. Portland picks up one in the 4th but Pettitte is feeling pretty good. Bonds respond with a solo job to make it 4-1. Castle Rock breaks it open in the 6th, making it 8-1. Meachem collects mop-up duty and the score stays the same.

WP: Pettitte (3-1)
LP: Avery (2-4)

Game #4:  Castle Rock looks to even the series with Bautista facing off against Hill. Both pitchers work out of jams and it is 1-1 through three. #9 hitter Blauser hits a solo shot to make it 2-1 Portland in the 4th. But, Castle Rock matches with a 2-out RBI single by Clayton to tie it up. Bonds hits a two-run homer to make it 4-2 in the 5th. Portland picks up 1 in the 7th to eke closer. Ruffin and Henke combine to close out the 8th and 9th and Castle Rock holds on 4-3.
WP: Bautista (3-2)
LP: Hill (2-3)
S: Henke (8)
Game #5:  The rubber match of the series after splitting the first four. Paul Wagner vs. Bryan Rekar in a battle of Grade 4’s. Portland strikes first with a run in the third inning. Wagner is looking Cy Young-esque holding the Hounds to zero runs through 7. But Rekar, only gives up the one run through 7 before being lifted. Castle Rock gets a man in scoring position in the 8th, but can’t capitalize. Wagner is upgraded to a 20 for the 9th inning. He gets the first two guys and with two outs gets Bonds to fly out to the warning track to complete the 1-0 shutout and give Portland the series.
WP: Wagner (2-3)
LP: Rekar (3-3)
Series Summary:  The Mavericks take the series 3-2, including a 1-0 matchup of D starters. Castle Rock is a perfectly mediocre 15-15 on the year.
Sugar Land Skeeters @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview:  Hampton aims high to recover from its shitty Week 5 by taking on an easy opponent … NOT … in the Sugar Land Skeeters who top the NL Central.
Game #1:  Al Martin and Jose Hernandez team up to come through in the bottom of the 8th and drive in a couple of runs against setup man extraordinaire Jeff Nelson as the Huskies come from behind to edge the Skeeters 4-3.

In Nelson’s defense, his 2nd blown save of the year was actually courtesy of Hernandez’s ground out that brought in speedy Brian McRae from 3rd.

John Hudek (1-0) got the win for Hampton for being in the right place at the right time and Paul Assenmacher got the last out to get his 3rd save of the year.

Hampton’s Mickey Tettleton (6) had the lone home run in the game off starter Wilson Alvarez in the 4th inning.

Game #2:  All Skeeters as they pounded out 18 hits against a thoroughly overpowered Hampton pitching staff in a 10-5 win to even the series.

Hampton actually led 5-4 after 2 innings and chased Sketeers’ starter Mark Langston, but from then on it was all Sugar Land as they crushed Jack McDowell like a semi running over a carton of garden gnomes.

Orlando Merced (5) and Darren (Mr. Hooters) Daulton (4) launched big ones for Sugar Land as part of a 3-hit attack by both. Joining them with a trio of base hits was Jim Thome.

For Hampton it was pretty much all Brian McRae with a single and a double that drove in four runs.

Game #3:  Sugar Land provided little support for Bret Saberhagen as Orel Hershiser dominated the Skeeters for 8 innings in a 4-1 Hampton win.

Mike Stanley had 3 hits and BJ Surhoff drove in a pair of runs for Hampton while Orlando Merced had two singles and a double for Sugar Land.

Paul Assenmacher got Phil Plantier to pop out to shallow right with two outs and two on to end the game for his 4th save with the Skeeters’ hitter representing the tying run.

Game #4:  No problem for the Skeeters generating offense in this one as they score 10 times in the first three innings on Bobby Jones and Rick White in a 12-4 laugher.

Moises Alou (2) homered for Sugar Land and Brian McRae (2) countered for Hampton. Craig Biggio, Orlando Merced and Jim Thome each had three hits for the Skeeters with Merced and Alou each driving in 4. McRae had three hits and drove in a pair for Hampton (very small yay).

Moral of the story – don’t shut down the Skeeters cuz you’re gonna pay for it the next game.

Game #5:  Mike Mimbs was great for Sugar Land striking out 11 and shutting down the Huskies for 7-1/3 but would-be save candidate Lee Hancock imploded in the bottom of the 9th allowing two consecutive triples and a double as Hampton stormed back to win it 3-2 with the winning run scoring on an errant throw to 1st base by Jim Thome.

Doug Strange of the Huskies was the only player in the game to collect two hits – one of which was a 9th inning triple.

Series Summary:  Some late-inning heroics lifted the Huskies for a close 3-2 win of the series where Hampton won the close ones and then had their pitchers get their butts kicked in the other two games.
Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Michigan Mauraders
Series Preview:  Santa Rosa makes their first appearance in Michigan. The Beach Bums are 14-11 and Michigan is 11-14 coming into the series.

Santa Rosa 7 Michigan 5

Game #2:  Great matchup with Smoltz and Morgan. In the 4th, Ripken drives in 2 runs with the bases loaded. In the 7th, Gagne hits a 3 run homer for the Beach Bums to narrow Michigan’s lead to 4-3. Mike Morgan is then injured. Then, in the 8th, Vinny Castilla makes a critical error and the game is tied. In the 12th, Tony Pena hits a homer for Santa Rosa. And, Michigan loses another close game. They just can’t seem to get the big hit.

Santa Rosa 5 Michigan 4

Game #3:  In the 3rd, Tony Tarasco hits a homer for the Beach Bums. In the 4th, Bret Boone hits a bases loaded single to tie the game. In the 5th inning, Michigan gets a run on a fielders choice. Kamieniecki throws a strong 8 and gets a save by Plesac and Michigan earns a win.

Michigan 2 Santa Rosa 1

Game #4:  Jon Nunnally hits a 2 run homer for the Beach Bums in the 1st inning. After 2 innings, the Beach Bums are up 3-0. Michigan nets 5 runs in the 2nd as Hoiles hits a grand slam. Michigan goes on to extend the lead and win to tie the series. Roger Bailey with the win in relief.

Michigan 9 Santa Rosa 6

Game #5:  The series is tied at 2. In the 1st inning, Radke gets hurt. It’s the second starting pitcher to go down in the series. In the 4th, Ripken knocks in a run. It’s a close game. In the 9th, Aguilera comes on and with 2 outs, Vinny Castilla hits a homer to end the game. Michigan wins.

Michigan 2 Santa Rosa 1

Series Summary:  Michigan narrowly wins the series as they come back from a 2-0 deficit. Both Mike Morgan and Brad Radke get injured.
Stockton Wings @ Long Beach Titans
Series Summary:  Stockton takes 3 of 5 from Long Beach.
Detroit Stars @ Fort Worth Panthers
Game #1:  The Panthers hold on to win even though their closer gave up back to back home runs in the 9th – Ft. Worth wins 8 to 6.
Game #2: No hits in the game until the 5th inning. The teams combined for 6 hits and half were solo home runs. The Panthers had two of them and that was the difference in the game – Ft. Worth wins 2 to 1
Game #3:  Stars score the final 4 runs of the game to overcome a 4-1 deficit – Detroit wins 5 to 4
Game #4:  Detroit wins going away; scoring 3 times in the 8th to open up a close game – final score Detroit 9 Ft. Worth 4
Game #5:  In the bottom of the 8th Detroit walks in a run to give the Panthers a 3-2 advantage. In the top of the 9th Todd Hundley doubles home two to put the Stars back up 4 to 3, but the Panther’s weren’t done scoring either. In the bottom of the 9th Rondell White ties the game with a sac fly and with a runner on third and one out Jeff Reboulet hits a blooper single past the drawn in infield for the game winner – Ft. Worth wins 5 to 4.
Series Summary:  Ft. Worth takes the series 3 games to 2.
Cincinnati Outlaws @ Steel City Sluggers
Series Summary:  It takes extra innings in the final game, but the Sluggers pull off the sweep.
Blarney Drive Bandits @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Last year these two teams fought for worst team in the league – this year it looks as if one of them will be FAR BETTER – and it ain’t the home team….
Game #1:  3 runs in the 9th on John Vanderwal homer (2) prevented the shutout. Randy Johnson goes 8 innings, 3 hits, 8 ks, no runs. He’s supported by 2 Eddie Murray homers (4, 5) and 2 from Shane Green (2, 3). Both guys get 4 rbis as the Bandits win 9-3.
Game #2:  Again Blarney Drive pours it on building an 8-0 lead through 5 1/2. Kevin Seitzer owned the offense in this one – 5 for 5, missed the cycle by a triple – he did homer (1) and drove in 5! David Wells was around for 7.2 innings for the win (4-2). Gas Hornets make it look close with 3 2-run innings (6, 7, 8) that included homers from Tino Martinez (11) and Luis Polonia (3). Final 10-6 Bandits (20 hits for the team)
Game #3:  Didn’t get any better for the home team in this one even though they scored 1st – single run in the 1st on a Garrett Anderson homer (4). Then the Bandits potent offense took over. 3 runs in the 2nd, Lou Whitaker goes 3 for 5 with a double and homer (5) and Mike Hampton goes 7, 7 hits for the win (2-2. Final 7-1 Bandits.
Game #4:  Most exciting game of the series – see-saw contest. Eddie Murray 2 hits, 3 rbis, homer (6). Brent Mayne 2 rbis (double). Shane Green 3 hits, run. and Blarney had 6 runs after 5. At the time it was 6-4. Gas Hornets sting for 1 in the 6th to make cut the score to 6-5. Home bench was pretty much cleared except a couple of regulars who needed rest – but still Manhattan mounted a rally in the 8th that brought in Ricky Bottalico to quell the riot. He faces 4, gives up a walk and a hit and and DiPoto finished giving up 2 more hits and the Gas Hornets scored 2 (both credited to Bottalico – who blew the save (2). Manhattan goes into the 9th with a 7-6 lead and needed to rely on Mark Acre for the save – and he comes through facing 3 and fanning 1 for the save (1) and the 7-6 win. Bottalico (0-1) took the loss.
Game #5:  Well things got back to being the Bandits show in the finale, buiding an 8-2 lead after 6 1/2. Then 8-4 after 7. They 3 more in the 9th for a big 11-4 lead. However, Gas Hornets attacked again and this time plated 4 in the 9th before Bottalico was called on with 1 on and 2 out and this time he got the job done (S – 8). Eric Hanson started, went 7, 4 runs and got the win (3-2). 4 guys got 2 hits each for the Bandits (14 total). Eddie Murray (7) and Shane Green (4) homered. Scott Livingstone got 3 hits in the game and 4 Gas Hornets got 2 each. But the 11-8 final for Blarney Drive quelled the home town fans hopes of 2 wins. – Tough thing for Bandits was Ryan Klesko crashing the wall catching a near homer and getting a 9 day injury.
Series Summary:  Easy 4-1 series win for Bandits – could have been a sweep.
STAT FACT – Quilvio Veras entered the week with 0 steals, ended the week with 7. He drew a lot of walks – but everytime he was on 1st and no one was on 2nd, he took off!
