| Germantown Grays @ Manhattan Gas Hornets | |
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | Germantown (33-17) has lost more than Manhattan (16-34) has won. And this week looks like a breeze for the Grays – but shocker alert!!!! |
| Game #1: | Vanlandingham has no problems going 7, 6 hits, no runs and a 7-3 Grays win. Jacob Brumfield 2 hits, 2 rbis, 3 runs homer (2) and Chris James homers (4) to lead the way. GER 7-12-1 WP Vanlandingham (5-0) S Castillo (1) MGH 3-11-1 LP Pulido (1-2) |
| Game #2: | Chuck Finely keeps things on track for the Grays as he goes the distance – 4 hitter (one a PH 2 run homer by Scott Livingstone (1)). But that was all the damage and his offense netted 10 hits and 6 runs. Reggie Sanders doubles and drives in 2, Greg Gagne drives in 2. GER 6-10-1 WP Finley (6-3) MGH 2- 4-0 LP Ashby (2-5) |
| Game #3: | Then things shift. Kevin Appier pitches well for 6 giving up 5 hits but no runs. His offense was not up to the challenge and they also had no runs. In the 7th they break through for a run on a Shane Mack PH rbi single. But that would be the lone Grays run. Bottom of the 8th Wil Cordero doubles in the tying run. Then in the 10th, Tino Martinez gets a 2 run walk-off homer (4) and the Gas Hornets steal one. GER 1- 8-0 LP Jeff Montgomery (1-2) BS Tony Castillo (2) MGH 3-11-0 WP Bob Patterson (3-1) |
| Game #4: | Well the Gas Hornets liked game 3 so much, they try to duplicate it for game 4. Reggio Sanders a grand slam homer (6) in the 4th and Frank Thomas a 3 run shot (11) in the 5th makes it 7-1 and looks like a slam dunk. But Manhattan comes back with 4 in the 5th to make it 7-5 and it stays that way until Tino Martinez comes up agains Mike Fetters in the 9th with 2 on. A swing, it goes way out for a walk-off three run homer (5). TWO DAYS IN A ROW!!! GER 7- 7-0 LP Fetters (2-3) BS (2) MGH 8-10-0 WP Bob Patterson (4-1) AGAIN! |
| Game #5: | OK, the drama is over. Manhattan gets 4 in the 1st and enjoy a 3 for 4 games from Benito Santiago. Two of them are homers (5, 6) and he drives in 6! Terry Mulholland was having so much fun watching Benito and then pitching to him that he goes the distance giving up 6 hits, walking one and shutting out the Grays – holy cow!! GER 0- 6-2 LP John Smoltz (3-4) MGH 9-12-0 WP Mulholland (3-7) |
| Series Summary: | So, the improbable happens – the Gar Hornets win not 1, not 2, but 3 games and take the series. Whodathunkit? |

| Game #2: | Flying Squirrels tie the game at 4 in the 8th on a double by Kirby Puckett and a throwing error by Edgar Martinez. | Game #3: | Greg Maddux held Ft. Worth to one hit through 8 IP and Kirby Puckett and Harold Baines eached drove in two runs. Flossmoor 6, Ft. Worth 0 |
| Game #4: | With two outs in the bottom of the 9th Rondell White ties the game for Ft. Worth by singling home Gary Sheffield from third base. White would go on to score the winning run in the bottom of the 11th when John Patterson delivered a walk off single. Ft. Worth 5, Flossmoor 4 |
| Game #5: | Every time the Flying Squirrels scored Ft. Worth answered back. Gary Sheffield hit a two run homer to tie the game at 5 in the 5th for the Panthers. Flossmoor went back up by two in the 6th on a double by Ryan Thompson and a sac fly by Kirby Puckett, but Edgar Martinez tied the game again in the bottom of the 6th when he doubled home two. Joe Orsulak drove in the final run of the game in the 7th leading to a Panthers win. Ft. Worth 8, Flossmoor 7 |

| Missouri Black Bears @ Hampton Huskies | |
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | A battle of two 2nd place teams trying to keep pace and maybe even make up ground on their NL Division leaders with the Missouri Black Bears travelling way east to take on the Hampton Huskies for five. |
| Game #1: | Henry Rodriguez spoils Ben McDonald‘s no-hitter with a ringing single in the 8th inning, but that’s about it for the Hampton office in this one as Missouri takes the opener 3-0. McDonald (4-3) went 7.2 innings walking three and fanning four as he shared the shutout with Mark Eichorn and John Wetteland (save #8). Matt Williams supplied all of the offense for Missouri, grounding out in the 1st inning to score Dante Bichette and then homering with Mike Piazza on board for two runs in the 3rd. That’s only 21 homers on the year for the burly 3rd baseman. Andres Galarraga, Piazza and Pumpkin Head Bonds each had two hits for the winners. Jack McDowell‘s lackluster start of allowing seven hits in six innings dropped his record to 4-4. |
| Game #2: | Bobby Jones flirts with a no-hitter going into the 7th without allowing a base hit but then stumbles and then outright trips in the 9th by giving up back-to-back homers to Steve Buechele and Pumpkin Head in a valiant last ditch bid by Missouri that fell just short as Hampton hung on to win 4-2. Arthur Rhodes … no really … bailed out Jones to get Mike Piazza, Matt Williams and Juan Gonzalez in order to get his 1st and probably last save of the season and move Jones to 5-4 on the year. For Buechele, it was his 5th tater of the year while Pumpkinhead bashed his 13th with half of the team’s four hits in the game leaving the park. Kenny Rogers (2-3) lasted 6.2 innings giving up four runs on 8 hits. He walked two and struck out four. Hampton hit a rare home run in this game courtesy of the bat of Mike Stanley (4) while Dave Hollins had a nice 3-hit day with a double and two singles and an RBI. Mickey Tettleton continued to reach base despite the disappearance of anything looking like a power stroke as he walked twice and singled and scored two runs. |
| Game #3: | Doug Drabek was just good enough as Eric Young supplied some rare power and smacked a two-run homer in the 1st inning to give Hampton the lead they would not relinquish as the Black Bears fell 5-4 to the Huskies. Drabek (8-2) gave up a run in the 1st inning on a Mike Piazza RBI single and then a two-run homer to Matt Williams (22) in the 3rd inning as part of a six-hit, two walk, four strikeout performance. Williams (23) was not done though as down 5-3 in the 8th he drew the Black Bears within one with his second homer of the game – a mammoth blast off Orel Hershiser. Doug Jones closed out the 9th for his 11th save of the year. Zane Smith (4-5) took the L for Missouri giving up nine hits in just six innings. |
| Game #4: | Dante Bichette took Doug Jones‘s fastball and smacked it on a line over the left field wall in the 12th as Missouri delivered a soul-crushing blow to the Huskies after the home team rallied for three runs bottom of the 9th to send it into extra innings. Missouri entered the 9th up 3-0 with little to no life being shown by Hampton. The Black Bears got their runs from Pumkinhead (14) on a solo homer in the 3rd, an Arthur Rhodes throwing error in the 2nd and a Juan Gonzalez RBI double in the 3rd. Mark Portugal went 5.2 for Missouri with no runs and four walks and six strikeouts to go with five hits allowed. Hampton victimized Mark Eichorn for its 3-run 9th which began with a double by Mickey Morandini that scored Dave Hollins and Mike Stanley and ended with Al Martin‘s 5th hit of the night – a single that scored Morandini. |
| Game #5: | The Series’s only laugher featured Missouri rubbing the Huskies lack of power in their faces as the Black Bears launched five balls out of the park against the beleaguered Hampton pitchers en route to a 9-3 shellacking. Juan Gonzalez (9) led with two long balls with Dante Bichette (6), Pumkinhead (15) and Mike Piazza (9) each clobbering one. Devon White (2) replied with a solo shot in the 4th … yay. And, of course, it was this game that Dave Hollins went down to injury for Hampton for 14 days. |
| Series Summary: | Missouri takes 3 of 5 with a pretty entertaining series as the Huskies’ fans got to watch a team with real power flex its muscles for a change. |
| Sugar Land Skeeters @ Blarney Drive Bandits | |
|---|---|
| Series Preview: | NL Central leader takes on the NL West bottom feeder. |
| Game #1: | Great back and forth battle. Skeeters out homer the Bandits 3-1 but Blarney gets some key hits to win a squeaker. Gibson, Griffey and Thome each collect 2 hits and collectively drive in 6 runs. Klesko delivers the game winner in the 6th, a 3-run bomb.
SLS 7 BDB 8 W – Williams (1) |
| Game #2: | Saberhagen dominates over 7 innings, allowing just 3 hits, while the Skeeter offense explodes with 5 long balls. Thome with a monster 4-5 5 RBI day and Biggio 2-5 w/ 4 RBI led the Skeeter assault.
SLS 15 BDB 0 W – Saberhagen (7) |
| Game #3: | Randy Johnson, once again, received no support while tossing 8 full and allowing just 2 runs. Lee Smith allows 2 in the 9th to give Suger Land a 4-0 lead. Alvarez was cruising until the 9th but got a little careless with light hitting Bordick and he deposited a 3-run shot to make it tight. Rivera lost for 24 days on a pitch from Johnson.
SLS 4 BDB 3 W – Alvarez (7) |
| Game #4: | Bandits turn to out-homer the Skeeters but it didn’t prove to be enough. David Wells went 7+ in a good outing but Onitveros was better. Oliva delivered a big 2-run homer in the 8th.
SLS 4 BDB 2 W – Ontiveros (5) |
| Game #5: | Jim Thome, aka BEAST, uncorks a grand slam AND 2 doubles to plate 7 in an incredible 6 for 7 day. Darren Daulton, while impressed with his teammates 6 hits, proves more efficient going 3 for 7 (with a slam) and driving in 8 runs. Skeeters annihilate the Bandit hurlers for 26 hits, 17 for extra bases, in what is now the most prolific beat down I have ever witnessed.
SLS 27 BDB 5 W – Langston (3) |
| Series Summary: | Skeeters outscore the home squad 57-18 and take 4 of 5. |
| Long Beach Titans @ Valdosta Bombers | |
|---|---|
| Game #1: | Long Beach 6-0. Dennis Martinez (4-4) tossed a nifty 4 hit CG for the win. |
| Game #2: | Valdosta 2-1. Pat Hentgen (2-7) was effective for a change and the pen shut down the Titans for the final 3 innings. |
| Game #3: | Valdosta 7-4. Jamie Moyer (3-3) allowed just 1 earned run in 7 IP to earn the win. |
| Game #4: | Long Beach 7-0. The Titans used 3 pitchers to shut down the Bombers on h5 base knocks. |
| Game #5: | Long Beach 8-5. Carlos Baerga smacked a pair of HR’s (14) to power the Titans attack as they ease past the Bombers. |
| Series Summary: | Long Beach takes 3 of 5 for the series win. |
