POR 14 DET 2
Game #2:  This was an epic battle. After a disappointing start to the year Portland really needed to capitalize… but every time it appeared they had the game in the bag, Detroit bounced back. And there was a lot of bouncing. Hampton Huskies @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Hampton, with their strong pitching, comes to Manhattan, with their “very weak” pitching, for a 5 game set. Word on the street is Manhattan could be a VERY DOMINANT TEAM – if it had pitching. Good offense, but absolutely NO pitching. Let’s see how the Huskies fare.
Game #1:  Jack McDowell loved this game. He goes the distance fanning 9, giving up 3 hits and NO RUNS! And he gets tons of support, 6 runs worth. Mike Stanley 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 rbis – Jim Eisenrich 2 hits (including a triple) and 2 rbis lead the attack.
HAM 6-14-0 WP McDowell (4-3)
MGH 0-3-0 LP VanEgmond (0-4)
Game #2:  So Bobby J. Jones squares off against the best excuse for a pitcher on the Gas Hornets staff, Andy Ashby, and the Gas Hornets offense takes center stage. Ashby does well too, going 8, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs and the 7 run 7th Manhattan cooked up was enough to blow a 4-2 game into a route. Jim Eisenrich again gets 2 hits and a rbi for the Huskies. Wil Cordero and Turner Ward get 3 hits, Scott Leius (5) smack a homer.
HAM 3-7-0 LP Jones (4-4)
MGH 11-15-1 WP Ashby (2-4)
Game #3:  Sanity returns to the expectations in game 3 as Doug Drabek controls the Gas Hornets for 8 inning giving up 5 hits and 1 run. it’s enough ad Jeff Frye collects 3 hits, an rbi and scores twice. Mike Stanley smacks 2 doubles against his former team and drives in 1, Eric Young – 2 hits and an rbi. Doug Jones pitches the 9th to rack up the save against his former team.
HAM 4-13-2 WP Drabek (7-2) S Jones (10)
MGH 1-5-1 LP Brian Anderson (1-4)
Game #4:  A 22 hits spread between the 2 produces a 7-5 tilt in favor of the home team. Allen Watson somehow outlast Jason Bere in this one. Bere gets knocked out early exiting after allowing the 1st 2 batters on in the 3rd – he gave up 4 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd and those 2 runners in the 3rd scored making it 7-2 after 3. Watson then yields 2 in the 4th but the Gas Hornets hang on to for the win. Mike Stanley has another good game – 2 hits and 3 rbis. Domingo Cedeno gets a pair of hits including a triple driving in one and he scores a run. Benito Santiago – 3 hits, 2 rbis (and hitting .372!). Luis Polonia gets 3 hits and scores twice.
HAM 5-9-0 LP Bere (3-4)
MGH 7-13-0 WP Watson (3-7) S Hitchcock (5)
Game #5:  Tom Gordon flashes some brilliance in the one over 6.1 innings and then gets a rest. He gives up 4 hits, 1 run and fans 7 and leaves the game with 2 on and a 5-0 lead. Manhattan gets one of those runners in, but that was it, and Hampton tacks on 4 more for a big 9-1 win. Mike Stanley – 2 more hits and a run and ribbie – this time on a solo homer (3). Everyone else in the starting lineup for Hampton, including Gordon, got 2 hits except Chris Gomez, he got 3 (2 rbis and a run. Slugfest!!
HAM 9-20-2 WP Gordon (4-4) S Remlinger (1)
MGH 1-5-1 LP Mulholland (2-7)
Series Summary:  In a literal see-saw series, the visiting Huskies from Hampton take 3 of 5. Only reason Mike Stanley didn’t get 2 hits in every game was because he didn’t play in game 2. Hampton goes home to host Missouri next week while the Gas Hornets stay put to entertain (literally with this pitching staff) Germantown. The Grays should have fun.
Janesville Juggernauts @ Montreael Deamers
Series Summary:  Montreal loses game #1, but comes back with 4 straight Wins to take the series 4 games to 1.
California Quakes @ Flossmoor Flying Squirrels
Series Summary:  California takes the series 3 games to 2.
