1994 PLAYER / PITCHER OF THE WEEK #5

Hampton’s 1 through 5 hitters each get a couple of hits and all save leadoff hitter Brian McRae drove in two runs as part of the shellacking. Of course, Hampton continued to struggle to get the ball out of the park despite getting 17 hits in the game while Blarney Drive’s Ryan Klesko (3) and Darrin Fletcher (2) had no problem homering off Hampton starter Jack McDowell.

David Weathers earned the worst line score of the night honors giving up nine earned runs on six hits and two walks in 1-1/3 innings of relief work.

Mike Greenwell had two hits and scored the lone Bandits’ run on an RBI single by Kevin Seitzer in the first inning off Hampton starter Bobby Jones (4-0). McRae had two hits for Hampton with Doug Jones closing things off with his 4th save of the year.

Drabek was outduelled by Randy Johnson who gave up two runs on seven hits in eight innings in a sort of messy but vintage Big Unit performance that saw him strike out seven and walk five.

Eddie Murray had two hits and drove in a couple with his first triple of his life with Mike Bordick also tripling and driving in a pair for Blarney Drive.

Brian McRae had two hits for Hampton which went yet another game without homering. Sigh.

The game saw pitching gems thrown by Blarney Drive’s David Wells and Hampton’s Jason Bere. Wells gave up just the single run on five hits in 8 innings although he pulled a Randy Johnson and struck out seven while walking five. Meanwhile Bere was dominant allowing just two hits with two walks and five Ks.

Wells provided most of his team’s offense as well with a single in the 5th inning that scored Mike Bordick.

Eric Young had two hits and Mike Stanley three walks to lead the Hampton offense.

Gordon gave up three of his five walks and five of his nine hits in the first inning, but got no help from the putrid Hampton defence headed by now benched Chris Gomez who committed two errors in the game and saw at least three balls blooped over his head drop into left field to bring in runs as he showed the range of a banana slug at shortstop.

Although the Bandits counted 10 hits only Gallagher and Greenwell managed two hits with starter Phil Leftwich contributing with a single in the 1st inning that drove in two runs. The Bandits did all their damage without getting an extra base hit.

Of course, this was the game where Hampton showed a bit of power with Henry (ChiChi) Rodriguez hammering one uselessly over the right field wall in the bottom of the 9th off poor David Weathers.
