Germantown Grays @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview:  The Al Martin Roadshow returns to Hampton as the Huskies host division rival Ken Caminiti and his Germantown Grays.
Game #1:  Dave Hollins broke a 3-3 deadlock in the bottom of the 8th when he sent Tony Castillo‘s pitch into the right field corner for a triple that scored Al Martin to lift Hampton to a 4-3 win.
Hollins and Martin did the bulk of the damage for the Huskies with Hollins goign 2/2 with two RBIs including an RBI single in the 4th inning while Martin was 2/3 with a double and three runs scored.
Mike McFarlane and Roberto Alomar each had two hits for the grays with Alomar adding an RBI.
Jack McDowell (1-1) was not too bad for Hampton, going 8 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks. He fanned seven. Last-minute pre-season acquisition Doug Jones nailed down his 2nd save with a perfect 9th.
Game #2:  Germantown drew first blood in Game 2 with a two-out rally thanks to that potent combo of Frank Thomas (double) and Ken Caminiti (another double) that narrowly missed going back to back off Hampton starter Bobby Jones.
Grays’ starter Chuck Finley also stumbled out of the gate giving up a leadoff double to Jeff Frye … that’s three doubles out of six batters so far for those keeping track at home. Finley then walked McRae but achieved some redemption getting Al Martin swinging on three pitches. On-again, off-again Finley then walked Mickey Tettleon to load the bases with just one out, but then of course fanned Mike Stanley. Plucky little Eric Young was the next guy up and promptly drove a ball into the gap that only a good defensive play by Reggie Sanders saved from reaching the wall, but not enough to keep Frye and McRae from coming around to score and make it 2-1.
Hometown fans wishing for blood after such a great start would be sorely disappointed however as Finley righted the ship and allowed all of one hit (he did walk three more though) for the next seven innings.
Finely left the game after eight with the game tied 2-2 as a result of Chris James‘ pinch hit single in the top of the 6th that brought in Sanders to score.
On to extra innings …
With household name Donnie Elliott (probably not even in his house) on the mound for Hampton, Caminiti greeted him by golfing a ball into the swamplands behind the stadium. Then the Huskies defence had a bit of a collapse when 1st base defensive sub Kevin Young let Sanders grounder dribble through his legs for two bases. Sanders then advanced on McFarlane’s ground out and came around to score from 3rd when Elliott’s twisteroni ball eluded catcher Mickey Tettleton. Germantown 4-Hampton 2.
… but wait!!!!! Hampton still gets to bat, right?
Germantown closer Mike Fetters came in struck out the first hitter – Devon White – but then walked Kevin Young. Frye followed with a bloop single that moved Young to 2nd base. Brian McRae swung for the fences but would only have succeeded if they moved the fences to 2nd base as he popped out harmlessly to Alomar. That brought up Al Martin – hitless in his previous four at bats … but no longer … Ka-blam … ball deposited just inside the right field foul pole for a 5-4 walkoff win for Hampton.
Game #3:  The Huskies had no desire to repeat the drama of the previous game so removed all doubt in this one scoring seven times off John Smoltz in the first two innings as they pounded the Grays 9-0.
Al Martin headed the hit parade with three of the Huskies’ 14 hits and was credited with six RBIs on the day to give him a gaudy 17 on the season after just 8 games. Brian McRae also had three hits and drove one in with Mickey Tettleton supplying the only power of the day with his 2nd home run of the year.
Doug Drabek (2-0) and Orel Hershiser (save #1) split the shutout for Hampton with Drabek still unscored on now through two starts.
Game #4:  Back to extra innings …
Hampton scored first with Brian McRae getting a leadoff single off Albie Lopez, stealing 2nd base and then scoring on Mickey Morandini‘s line drive single to right field.
The Grays came back with two of their own off starter Jason (Where the @#@ is the Plate?) Bere as he issued three of his seven walks (including four to Roberto Alomar) in the 3rd inning with two of them coming around to score on a single by none other than seemingly unstoppable steroid-riddled Ken Caminiti.
The Grays extended their lead to 3-1 in the 7th when Col. Reggie Sanders lined one up the middle bringing in Mike Huff to score easily from 3rd base.
Hampton stormed back to take the lead with three runs in the 8th on an RB single by Morandini and a two-run double by Mike Stanley off lefty reliever Paul Assenmacher.
Doug Jones took the mound for Hampton to close things out in the top of the 9th and had no trouble with Huff but lots with Frank Thomas who crushed one into the left field stands to tie it and send it into extra frames.
After a scoreless 10th that saw the Huskies load the bases, but fail to score against Tony Castillo Huff came up and hit a ball that just kept carrying further and further and out of the park much to the chagrin of Hampton pitcher Yorkis Perez.
Mike Fetters wouldn’t be so charitable in this game … he walked Dave Hollins but that’s all Hampton would get as Germantown won in the 11th 5-4.
Game #5:  Fricking Jim Bullinger was epic, allowing just three singles to Hampton as Germantown won 2-0.
Bullinger struck out only four but walked just one and socked Al Martin in the gut with a pitch for the only blemishes on the day.
Tom Gordon continued the bases on balls lunacy started by Jason Bere and walked six in the game for Hampton to go with nine strikeouts in 7.2 innings of one-run ball. His lone mistake was in the 4th allowing Shane Mack to reach 3rd base and then score on Tony Tarrasco’s one out fly ball to deep right.
The Grays added another run in the top of the 9th when Reggie Sanders singled and drove in Roberto Alomar after he’d stolen 2nd base.
ah well …
Series Summary:  A good series featuring four of five very close games and Hampton is lucky to come away with 3 of 5.
