| Detroit Stars @ Flossmoor Flying Squirrels | |
|---|---|
| Preview |
Detroit heads to Flossmoor for a matchup of AL West division foes.
|
| Game #1: |
A pitchers duel for most of the game, it was 2-1 Detroit heading to the 7th inning stretch. In the bottom of the 7th, walks loaded things up for the Squirrels and then a series of hits put a 5 spot on the board for the home side. Flossmoor wins it 6-2. Cone the win going 7 solid innings.
|
| Game #2: | Fryman opens the scoring in the 2nd for Flossmoor with a solo shot off McDowell. In the third Weiss draws a one-out walk, steals second, and comes home on Bichette’s single. Stars on the board in the 4th as Coleman doubles and comes home on an RBI single by Kruk. In the bottom of the inning Baines draws a lead-off walk, Fryman follows with a single, as does Bagwell to score Baines. Then a wild pitch brings home Fryman and Morandini follows with a sac fly to score Bagwell. 5-1 FFS after four innings. In the fifth the Squirrels tack another run on thanks to a 2-out RBI single by Fryman. Then a throwing error by the pitcher Nelson scores Baines and extends the inning. With the bases loaded Mackey Sasser delivers a two-run single. Four runs with two outs for the home side makes it 9-1 FFS. Stars get a couple runs back in the 6th on a fielders choice and a wild pitch. But the Squirrels answer with five more runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to another Star error. Flosmoor ends up winning it 15-5. Hibbard gets the win behind a ton of run support. |
| Game #3: |
Flossmoor on the board first in the 2nd on a 2-out-RBI double by Teufel. Sasser follows with a run scoring single to make it 2-0.
In the 4th Sasser with another RBI single scoring Spiers to make it 3-0 FFS. Home side adds another in the 5th on Maas’ RBI single but Ron Gant is injured for a couple days after being hit for the 2nd straight day. Maddux pulled in the 9th with a 5 run lead and the Squirrels bullpen completely melts down. Walks galore, errors, an injury to Williams and its an 8 run inning. Stars come back to win it. |
| Game #4: |
Flossmoor grabs two in the first with two outs on hits by Fryman and Bagwell.
Two more for the home side in the second. Stars get two back in the 4th but line into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning. With two outs in the bottom of the inning Spiers doubles and comes home on Puckett’s single. One more for Flossmoor in the 5th in Bagwell’s single. That would be it for the scoring. Sutcliffe goes 8 strong and Charlton gets em 1-2-3 in the 9th. FFS 6 DET 2 |
| Game #5: |
Baines with an RBI double to score Bichette in the first gives Flossmoor an early 1-0 lead.
Kruk knocks in Butler in the 3rd with his 80th hit of the series (at least it feels like it). In the third its Harold Baines again with a two run double with two outs. Fryman then knocks home Baines with a single. 4-1 FFS. In the 4th Weiss knocks home Teuffel with one out and Puckett brings home two more with two outs. 7-1 FFS. Squirrels add another in the 6th on Gladden’s two out hit. Two more for the home side in the 8th gets us to the 10-1 final. Boddicker wins it, Slocumb finishes it. |
| Game #6: | A rough first inning for Cone as Coleman singles, steals second and scores on Butler’s single. The inning is extended and a run scores when Cone throws it away on a comebacker. 2-0 Stars after a half inning. But in the bottom of the first Gant, back from injury, wastes no time tying it up with a 2 run homer. Then with 2 outs its Dante Bichette blasting a three run bomb. Squirrels bat around and score five. In the 2nd Gant singles, steals second, and scores on Baines’ double. Fryman walks to chase the starter from the game. Flossmoor adds single runs in the 6th and 7th. That’s all they would need as Cone gives way to Bedrosian in the 9th. FFS 8 DET 2 |
| Game #7: | Stars score in the first as Coleman singles, steals second and scores on Kruk’s hit. Squirrels right back in the bottom of the first. Teufel singles and Puckett goes yard. Gant and Bagwell double to score another. 3-1 FFS after one. Stars get another run on a fielders choice in the 2nd. Another run for Detroit in the 3rd as Coleman triples and is scored by Kruk. Stars with one more in the 4th to take a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the 4th Bagwell is hit for the 20th (!) time this year, Taubensee doubles, and Weiss brings them home. Stars tie it in the 6th on a Coleman double. Bagwell then leads off the bottom of the 6th with a homer to untie it.Stars tie it in the 7th on a fielders choice. And Puckett unties it with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning. Stars get two off the Squirrel bullpen thanks to an error in the 8th. In the 9th Perez gets the first two outs, then Baines doubles to extended it for Kevin Maas, who hits a two run walk-off for the home side. FFS 9 DET 8 |
| Summary |
Flossmoor wins 6 of 7 and if not for the bullpen meltdown in game three, would have swept the series. The Flying Squirrels are now 10 games over the .500 mark and might be hitting their stride. They scored 59 runs in the seven game series and the starting pitching was more than adequate. Up next is a trip to Mexico.
