Lots of early scoring in this one as the visitors jump on Mike Timlin for three runs in the top of the first thanks to a HR by Kirby Puckett and some timely hitting. But the Demolition bounce back with four runs of Greg Maddux in the bottom of the first. Mike Scioscia with a two run bomb to cap the scoring. A homer by Harold Baines ties it at four in the 2nd and the Squirrels tack on another run in the third to take a 5-4 lead. Chicago scratches one across in the bottom of the 6th to tie it once again but a Walt Weiss leadoff triple in the 7th leads to a run for Flossmoor, who take a 6-5lead. Osuna and Olson hold it down for the win. Maddux improves to 3-1 (3.18 ERA) and Olson gets save number three. FFS 6 – CHI |
| Game #2: | Flossmoor strikes first against reigning Cy Young winner Roger Clemens thanks to a three run blast from Harold Baines. But the Demolition answer with two in the bottom of the first off Boddicker. A two out double by Bagwell in the third plates Baines to extend the Squirrel lead back to two. Flossmoor would tack some more on in the 4th thanks to a 2 run double from Bernie Williams and lead it 6-2. Boddicker has been wild all day but had been getting away with it, until the 4th. Multiple walks open the door to a three run inning for Chicago and the Demo are back in the game. Chicago would tie it up the next inning. With 2 out and nobody on Davis singles and Doran brings him home with a double. Still tied in the 8th as Morandini leads off with a single for Flossmoor and chase the Rocket from the game. Radinsky on in relief and Taubensee tries to sacrifice the go-ahead run to third and on the bunt, Radinsky throws it away. Morandini scores and Taubensee to 2nd. Next up is Molitor who singles but Strawberry guns down Taubensee at the plate for the 1st out. Radinsky then plunks Bernie Williams (out 11 days) and then with two outs Harold Baines rips an RBI single scoring Molitor, Fryman follows with an RBI single and then a passed ball scores Baines. It turns into a 4 run inning and a 10-6 Squirrel lead. Flossmoor tacks on one more in the 8th, Chicago grabs one in the 9th but it’s not enough. Boddicker picks up his third win despite 7 walks in 5.2 innings. Clemens falls to 1-3 (6.83 ERA?!) Baines finishes 3-5 with a HR, 2B, 4 RBI and 3 runs.

| Game #3: | Flossmoor gets on the board first in the third on an sac fly from Travis Fryman scoring Jerry Browne but that’s all they gets despite leading the bases with 1 out. The Squirrels would load the bases for Fryman again with 1 out in the 5th but Holman induces the double play grounder. Flossmoor adds another in the 7th on another sac fly, this time from Puckett scoring Molitor. Things got crazy in the bottom of the 8th. A leadoff single and walks load the bases. Osuna walks in a run and the Squirrels go to the pen for Charlton. Guillen squeezes but they get the runner at home for out #1. Alvin Davis pops out on the infield for out #2. That leaves it to Eric Davis but Charlton strikes him out to escape the jam. Charlton then aces the middle of the Demolition order 1-2-3 to close it out for his first save. Sutcliffe the winner (1-1), Holman goes the distance in a losing effort (1-3).
FFS 2 – CHI 1 |
| Game #4: | Scoreless through five as both Stieb and Hibbard make easy work of the lineups. In the 6th an RBI single by Molitor scores Taubensee to put the Squirrels up 1-0. But Doran ties it up with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning. That’s the way it stayed until the 13th inning when a two out single by Walt Weiss scored Dante Bichette to give Flossmoor a 2-1 lead. Molitor followed with an RBI triple off Eckersley to make it 3-1. Larkin leads off the bottom of the 13th with a homer and then a walk puts the tying run on with no outs. Edwards comes in and gets the next two. With two outs a high throw by Weiss allows the tying run to score. A walk to Strawberry bring Legendary Lloyd McClendon up and he ends it with a walk off three run homer. Eckersley goes from the loss to the win. Steib gets a ND despite 9.1 innings of 1 run ball. Edwards blows everything for the loss.

| Game #5: | Squirrels on the board in the first with 3 runs off Drabek, capped off by another Harold Baines homer. Demolition on the board in the 2nd as McCaskill walks in a run with two outs but Puckett makes a nice play in the field to avoid further damage.Chicago add another run in the 3rd on a fielder’s choice but Strawberry is picked off to stall the threat. 3-2 Flossmoor after three. And there wasn’t much after that. McCaskill settles down and works 7 strong innings and Charlton comes out for the final two to pick up his 2nd save. Drabek goes the distance in the loss and falls to 1-3.

| Summary |
Flossmoor takes the series four games to one, with the Demolition needing to rally from down two in the 13th to avoid the sweep. Harold Baines goes 8-for-18 (.444) in the series with 3 homers and 8 RBI for Flossmoor. Paul Molitor was 12-for-25 (.480), including a 6-6 game. With the win in the finale, Flossmoor has a winning record for the first time under its new ownership.

Winnipeg jumped on Tomlin early knocking him out with 6 runs in the 2nd. The key hits were a 2 run 1B by Sax and a Ventura 2B driving in 2. Ventura added a 2 run HR in the 6th and the Goldeyes coasted to a 12-1 win. Ventura led the attack with 5 RBI.

This time Long Beach started hot with 3 runs in the first. Baerga capped the inning with a 2 run 2B. It was 4-0 when Buhner hit a 3 run bomb in the 6th to cut the lead to 4-3. That was the end of the scoring as the Titan bullpen closed out the 4-3 win.

Guzman continued his rookie season struggles giving up 2 runs in the 1st when Downing knocked in Smith & Sax. Long Beach tied the game in the 4th when Vaughn tripled in Justice and Oliver knocked in Vaughn. The Goldeyes took the lead back in the 6th when Downing tripled in Ventura. Devereaux followed with a 1B making the score 4-2. Long Beach got a run back in the 7th but Willis came on to close out the 4-3 Winnipeg win.

After Winnipeg went ahead 2-0, Fielder hit a grand slam in the 3rd to give Long Beach a 4-2 lead. Fielder added another HR in the 4th to push the lead to 6-2. Winnipeg got 2 back in the 7th to cut the lead to 6-4. In the 8th Ventura singled in Vizquel and Winnipeg had the bases loaded with 2 outs but Ward came in and struck out Cerone to end the threat. Ward pitched a 1-2-3 9th to close out the 6-5 win. Fielder was the Long Beach offense with 2 HRs and 5 RBI.

Winnipeg jumped on Viola early and built a 4-0 lead in the 7th. In the bottom of the inning Vaughn singled in 2 runs to cut the lead to 4-2. After Dempsey singled in a run, Vaughn scored on a Magadan SF to tie the game. The tie game didn’t last long as the Goldeyes took the lead back in the top of the 8th when Sax tripled in Smith. Fielder tied it back up when he led off the bottom of the inning with a HR. It was still 5-5 in the bottom of the 9th when Fielder hit a walk off 3 run HR to give Long Beach an 8-5 win. Fielder hit his second 2 HR game in a row and led the Titan offense with 4 RBI.

Downing opened the scoring with a solo HR in the 2nd. Reimer gave Long Beach a 2-1 lead with a 2 run bomb in the 5th. Baerga hit a 2 run shot in the 6th to increase the lead to 4-1. It stayed that way until the 9th when Ventura led off with a HR. Later in the inning defensive replacement Herr let a Cerone grounder go through his legs allowing 2 runs to score and tying the game. Though both teams threatened it was still 4-4 in the bottom of the 12th when Herr singled, stole second and scored on a Baerga to give Long Beach a 5-4 win.

Long Beach opened the scoring in the 4th when Baerga doubled in Brooks. That was all the scoring until the 9th when Winnipeg tied the game on a Barberie SF. Ventura broke the tie in the 10th when he doubled in Smith. Roberts singled in Ventura to push the Winnipeg lead to 3-1. Freeman closed out the game to preserve the win. For the first game in the series the starting pitchers dominated. Glavine went 9 innings giving up 7 hits and striking out 9. Lancaster went 8 1/3 giving up 4 hits.

But Ray Lankford breaks it up with a 2-out single. B. Harvey is then brought in for the final out. Gordon strikes out 14 in his 8 2/3 innings of work.

Lankford and H. Morris to make it 3-2, A. Belle belts a 3-run HR to put the game away.

Burks ties the game with a solo HR in the 5th. The Cutthroats then take their first lead as J. Franco walks, steals second, and scores on A. Belle’s RBI single. The game looks to be going Montana’s way until the 9th when P. O’Neill drives home T. Pendleton with the tying run. Into extra innings we go until Burks wins the game with his second solo HR of the night.

Game 6 is a re-match of T. Gordon vs. F. Tanana. The result isn’t much difference as Gordon records his second dominant game of the series. This time it is a complete game 2 hitter with 12 strikeouts. His offense backs him with 3 homeruns.

Another classic extra game in the finale. Montana takes a 1-0 lead in the first on B. Harper’s RBI double. Ramon Martinez seems to be cruising until the 7th when L. Whitaker ties it with a 2-out RBI single. The game then goes into the 12th when T. Phillips triples and then scores on a groundout to give the Quakes the win.

This California Quakes team is really really good. Probably the best team in the AL this year. They take the series 5 games to 2 over Montana. I was impressed.Tom Gordon was spectacular and probably has pitcher of the week sewn up after this performance. Gordon goes 17 2/3 innings while only giving up 3 hits, no runs, and striking out 26. He lost a no-no with two outs in the 9th of game 1. Pretty solid stuff.
