East Pointe headed West on I-94 to take on the Demolition of Chicago.

Game #1:

It was the Ken Phelps show. Not only was he 5 for 6, but all of his hits were for extra bases. A Double, Triple, 3 Home Runs & 12 RBI’s. 17 Total Bases, 3 runs scored. A career & record breaking day for Mr. Phelps. B.J. Surhoff was 4 for 4 for the Marlins. Mitch (Wild Thing) Williams was indeed just that, allowing 8 hits and 8 walks in 2 innings pitched. Roger Clemens improved to 20-4 2.89.
Final Score: Chicago 23 – East Pointe 4

Game #2:

Dave Stewart (10-5 3.74) was masterful for 8 innings, Eckersley with his 22nd save. Wade Boggs goes 2 for 4 with a HR & 4 RBI’s.

Game #3:

Ken Phelps goes 3 for 4 – Doug Drabek & Dennis Eckersley pitch for Chicago – Eckersley (5-2 3.88 – 22 Saves) picks up the win.

East Pointe’s Eric Show is solid through 7 Innings Pitched. Mitch Williams picks up the save with 2 innings pitched.

Roger Clemens comes back and goes 7 solid. Picks up his 21st win (21-4 2.88). Ken Phelps goes 2 for 4 with 2 Home Runs & 4 RBI’s.

Series Preview

Missouri travels to Manhattan for a 7 game series – old acquaintances from each team share dugout time as members of the BIG offseason trade rekindle friendships.

Game #1:

Black Bears strike first taking the opener 5-3 behind strong pitching from Liebrandt (W 7-9), a 4 hit performance from Sierra and a 2 run rbis from Pendleton. Noles faces 1 batter in the 9th for the save (4). Leary, in his first outing of the year, takes the loss (0-1).

Game #2:

Gas Hornets bounce back big time with 10-2 victory behind Jimmy Key (W 17) and Jerry Reed (S 6). The 13 hit Manhattan attack included 2 Dawson HRs (29, 30) and a Joyner bomb (15). Matt Williams launched a solo shot (4) for the Black Bears. Ruffin (7-6) took the loss.

Game #3:

Missouri doesn’t roll over and takes game 3 4-3. Morris (W 11-6) had things in solid control through 7 inning (3 hits, 1 run, 9 Ks). Noles (S 5) on the other hand pitched a wild 9th giving up 2 hits a HR and 2 runs to make the game appear close. Davis (17) hits the Gas Hornet homer. Alexander (8-4) took the loss. Oddibe McDowell greeted the Gas Hornets with 3 hits, a run and rbi in this one.

Game #4:

The see-saw continued in game 4 with Manhattan coming out on top 6-3. After the teams trade 3 runs each in the first (including a 2 run Sierra HR (20) and Joyner 2 run HR (16)), the Gas Hornets realed of single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th for the winning margin. After the 1st, Clancy (W 9-5), Filson and Hudson (S 4) shut down the Black Bears. Williams added a HR (8) for Manhattan, Long (3-9) took the loss.

Game #5:

Odd game – Missouri is the winner again! And again, like game 1 the score was 5-3 and again Leary (0-2) was the loser. Teams trade 2 runs in the 1st, but the 2 runs by Missouri in the 5th proved to be enough for Heaton (W 3-6) and crew including Noles (S 6) who pitched the final 2 innings. Mc Dowell hit the 2 run HR (6) in the 5th for the victory. Sierra added 2 doubles and an rbi in the winning cause. Dawson (31) and Jacoby (29) homered for the home team.

Game #7:

Odd numbered game for the series finale and Key returned to mound for Manhattan, Leibrandt for Missouri. Game was scoreless through 4, but that ended in the 5th when Manhattan scored 1 and they added 2 more in the 6th for a 3-0 lead. Joyner (17) and Sax (6) had solo HRs and Key ended up going the distance for a CG 3 hit, 3-0 shutout (18-3). Key DID NOT strike out a single Black Bear in the 32 batters he faced! Liebrandt pitched well again, but couldn’t get any support and took the loss (7-10).

Series Summary *

Manhattan manages a 4-3 series win, but it was certainly a series the Black Bears probably enjoyed. Lots of good action, hitting, pitching and weird fielding.

·         Old Mill Legends @ Cedar Park Bears

Series Preview

Not much at stake in this AL East match up between the Old Mill Legends and the Cedar Park Bears.

Game #1:

Backup catcher Barry Lyons HRd and drove in 4 runs, Pagliarulo added a 2-run HR to lead the Bears over the Legends.

Game #2:

Pat Tabler HRd, drove in 3 including the game winner in the 12th inning. Pagliarulo (19) HRd and drove in 3 for the Bears.

Game #3:

A young Greg Maddux, showed the stuff of a future HOFer, went the distance. Quinones a 2-run HR.

Game #4:

The Legends scored 6 in the 6th to wipe out a Bears’ 5-1 lead. Clark and Pagliarulo HRd for Cedar Park. But Esasky HRd and drove in 3, Joe Carter a 2-run and Tim Burke closed it out.

Game #5:

Six different Legends’ batters drove in a run, Tabler a HR, Burke closed it out again for save #24. Old Mill makes it 4 straight over the Bears.

Game #6:

Musselman and Crim come out of the Bear’s bullpen to shutout the Legends over the last 4 innings to enable the Bears to come from behind, Crim earned his 18th save. Pags drove in 2 runs without virtue of a hit.

Game #7:

Mike Boddicker improved to 9-7 going 8 innings and allowed only 1 earned run. Al Pena pitched the 9th for his 5th save. Puckett and Washington went yard for the Bears, Pagliarulo drove in a run and scored twice going 3 for 3.

Despite dropping the final 2 outings, the Legends win the series, 4-3.

Series Preview

A battle in the American League East as the 3rd place Stockton Wings visit the last place Montana Cutthroats.

Game #1:

Stockton provides a rude welcome to Montana’s Pete Smith who makes his first appearance and start of the season. The Wings knock out 16 hits and score 6 runs to win going away. The game could have been worst than the final score had Stockton not left 12 on base. Chili Davis gets 3 hits and a HR and Willie Upshaw gets 3 hits to lead Wings. Mike Campbell gets win with 7 strong innings. FINAL – STO 6 MCT 3

Game #2:

Willie Wilson gets 3 hits and scores twice and Willie Randolph gets two hits and a HR to lead Montana past Stockton. Shane Rawley takes a no-hitter into the 8th, but is denied as the Wings score twice in inning to make it close. Jeff Heathcock gets save for Montana. FINAL – MCT 6 STO 3

Game #3:

Solo HRs and two hits a piece from Darryl Strawberry and Alex Trevino leads Montana to a 4-3 win over Stockton. Mark Grant goes 5 plus strong innings and Floyd Youmans picks up the win with 3 2/3 quality innings in relief. Wings tie game with 2 runs in 6th, but Montana gets singles in 6th and 7th to win. FINAL – MCT 4 STO 3.

Mike Witt goes the distance allowing only 1 run on 8 hits to lead Montana. Darryl Strawberry paces offense with 4 for 5 game. Straw scores twice and drives home 3 with double and triple. Mickey Tettleton goes 2 for 3 for Stockton in losing cause. FINAL – MCT 8 STO 1

Game #5:

Down 4-1 in 7th, Stockton scores 2 in 7th and 1 in 8th on HRs by Barry Larkin and Chili Davis to tie game. However, Montana gets 2 in home half of 8th to win 6-4. Gary Thurman‘s SF was the game winner in his first plate appearance of the season. FINAL – MCT 6 STO 4

Game #6:

Pete Smith atones for his shaky first start in game 1 of series with a complete game gem for Montana. Smith throws 4-hit shutout despite walking 7. Stockton leaves 10 men on base in the game. Homeruns by Kevin Seitzer and Jim Presley pace the Cutthroats attack to back Smith on hill. FINAL – MCT 7 STO 0

Game #7:

Montana extends its longest winning streak of the season and completes its best homestand of the year with a 6-5 win in the series finale. The win is Montana’s 6th straight. Montana wins despite getting out hit 12-7. Shane Rawley goes 5 for the win. Robbie Thompson’s 2-run HR in 9th brings Stockton within 1 but Jeff Heathcock closes door for 11th save. FINAL – MCT 6 STO 5

Series Summary *

Montana has most successful homestand of the season with 6 games to 1 series win. Cutthroats came into series with only 12 wins all year at home. They get half that total in one series. Offensively, Montana is led by usual suspects Kevin Seitzer (9 for 26) and Darryl Strawberry (11 for 24).
