| Series Preview: | The Hounds, deep in the wildcard hunt, host the 1st place Steelers. Southlake is trying to fend off the Demolition in the Central. |
| Game #1: | It is 1-1 going into the top of the 6th and then the Steelers explode for 8 runs in that half inning. The final is 10-1 as Tejera and the pen shut down the Bonds-less Castle Rock (out for two more games). Matt Franco lead the way from the 9 hole, delivering a double and a homer and 4 RBI.

| Game #2: | It’s 1-1 going into the top of the 9th, but Nomar takes Lohse deep to give Southlake a 2-1 lead and Smoltz holds on for the save after giving up a leadoff double to Hammock.

| Game #3: | After mustering just two runs in the first 18 innings of the series, Castle Rock explodes for 7 runs in the first two off of Southlake ace, Mark Prior. Unfortunately, Omar Daal, a Grade 3 starter is on the mound for Castle Rock, and he is about as effective as prior, allowing 6 runs in his two innings of work. Blalock ties it at 9-9 in the 5th, as nobody is effective on the mound today. It will stay that way until the bottom of the 9th, when Brad Wilkerson delivers a pinch-hit RBI single to score Luis Gonzalez from second with two outs and Castle Rock walks it off with a 10-9 victory.

| Game #4: | Southlake takes a tight 2-1 victory, as the Hounds offense can’t get anything going, even with Bonds back in the lineup. Einar Diaz goes deep for the Steelers.

| Game #5: | It’s 2-1 going into the 9th, Southlake leading. They get an insurance run in the top half and Smoltz comes on to try to get his 3rd save of the series. He does just that, getting the Hounds in order to preserve a 3-1 victory and a 4-1 series lead for Southlake.

| Game #6: | Southlake takes a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the 9th and brings Smoltz on to try to get his 4th save of the series. But, the Hounds offense has other plans. Randall Simon delivers a pinch-hit lead-off single, Blake pinch-runs for him and scores on a Robby Hammock triple to tie the game at 4-4. With Wilkerson up, Smoltz tosses a wild pitch and Castle Rock wins the game on a walk-off WP.

| Game #1: | Jennings unfortunately had to leave the game after throwing just one pitch with a 12 game injury. Wilson came on and promptly got shelled. Mullets had a 7-0 lead after three innings, but Thome’s multi rbi double and Taylor’s three run homer made it a one run game by the 6th. Flora-Bama got one back in the bottom of the 6th, but an Alou solo homer in the 7th and a fielders choice in the 8th tied it up 8-8. Blum’s rbi double in the 10th put the Mad Rally Hatters up 9-8. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, the newest Mullet, Kent hit a solo to tie it at 9-9 and send the game to the 11th. Finally, in the bottom of the 12th, Palmiero hit a two run walk off homer. | Game #2: | Palmeiro’s Baltimore special in the 4th started the scoring. Berkman added a two run homer in 5th. Moyer tossed 6.2 scoreless innings for the win. Flora-Bama 5-2 |
| Game #3: | Becket worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 1st only giving up one run and then was unhittable for the next six innings. Huff and Lopez homered off Stephenson to power the offense. Flora-Bama 4-2 |
| Game #4: | Berkman went 3 for 4 with two homeruns and four rbis. Wilson and Griffey homered in the loss. Ramirez went 7.2 innings for the W. Flora-Bama 6-3 |
| Game #5: | Flora-Bama broke open a 3-1 game scoring four runs in the 7th powered by Palmeiro. Haven’t seen this one before – The micro decided to IW Javy with a runner on 2nd and 1st to load the bases in order to have a righty face the lefty Palmeiro. Flora-Bama 7-2 |
| Game #6: | Long reliever Kris Wilson (2 ZL) had to start the game for Danbury with Jennings now on the DL. Wilson’s grade dropped to a 1 grade in the 3rd, but he gutted out seven solid innings only giving up three runs in the 4th. Wolf left the game in the 8th with a one run lead only giving up a Biggio solo in the 3rd and Hall rbi single in the 6th. Mullets added a couple insurance runs off the Danbury pen in the 8th. | Game #1: | In a game that saw 18 singles between the 2 teams, the only 2 homeruns were hit by Houghton’s Jose Morban, who had only 1 extra-base hit, a double, in over 100 plate appearances on the season. Morban powered Houghton to a 5-4 victory.

| Game #2: | The Penguin’s Albert Pujols got to Juan Sosa early with a 2-run Homerun in the bottom of the 1st inning, but the rest of the game was a pitchers’ duel for 8 innings between Sosa and the Penguin’s Ted Lilly. It was 2-1 in the top of the 9th when Houghton’s manager made a poor decision to pull Lilly when he was about to face Troy Glaus, who he had struck out all 3 times so far during the game, in order to get the righty-righty advantage. Pearce, who had just picked up the save in the first game came in and immediately gave up a 1-out double to Glaus and let pinch-runner Hocking to score the tying run and then the go-ahead run to lose the game, 3-2.

| Game #3: | The Maulers come out hot scoring 8 runs in the first 4 innings and jumping out to a 8-1 lead after 4 innings at the expense of Aaron Harang. Harang gives up 12 singles and 2 doubles to Monroeville over the first 5 innings. The game was pretty much over after the first 4 innings as the Maulers cruise to a final score of 9-1. The Maulers amazingly put 21 batters on 1st base with 15 singles, 4 walks, and 2 HBP. They also added 2 doubles, but the game was it was mostly running batters down to first base. The Penguins did turn 3 double plays, or the score could have been much worse.

| Game #4: | Houghton’s ace, Mark Buehrle takes the hill, going for his 10th win, against Monroeville’s Torres, who is trying to avoid his 15th loss of the season. Houghton jumps out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on a Pujols double and a 2-out, 2-run single by Kevin Cash. Vlad Guerrero brings the Maulers to within 1 run in the 4th inning on a 3-run homerun. Crisp puts the Maulers ahead with a 2-run homerun in the 7th inning. Buehrle goes the distance trying to will the Penguins offense to score more runs, but there was nothing more to come after the first inning. Houghton loses, 6-4.

| Game #5: | Houghton’s Scott Downs scatters 9 hits and 3 walks as he goes the distance in a 3-0 shutout of the Maulers. Dontrelle Willis gave up 3 runs, 1 earned. Houghton had 3 total hits: a homerun by Shawn Wooten, a triple by Pat Burrell, and a double by Rickie Weeks.

| Game #6: | Houghton’s Darren Oliver follows with another shutout of Monroeville, 2-0. Houghton did all of their damage in the 3rd inning on back-to-back homeruns by Rollins and Pujols. The Penguins defense again helped out their pitcher by turning 3 double plays.

| Game #1: | Goldeyes get a run on a Guiel rbi single in the top of the first (would not be surprised if this is a recurring event). But somehow Kim settles down – he’s been poor in relief and he’s been promoted to starter to save our bullpen efforts. But he settles down and pitches 5.1 inings with no more runs given up. Manhattan hitters are slow to start, but eventually they gobble up the opposing starter – Jimmy Gobble and use 2 run homers from Tony Graffanino (5) and Wil Cordero (11) to pace the 4-1 win. | Game #2: | 1st inning homer by Aarib Guiel (12) and the Goldeyes again grab a lead before Manhattan bats. But this time the Gas Hornets tie it in their half a Jason Kendall lead-off homer (7). Manhattan grabs a 2-1 lead in the 2nd, and then explode for 5 in the 5th keyed by a Jeff Conine 3 run homer (15). Winnipeg get 2 back in the 6th, Guiel another rbi and Harvey a SF. But Manhattan geets 3 more in the 6th to make it 10-3! Safe lead, well, probably, but Justin Morneau says not so fast as he smashes a 3 run homer (3) in the 9th. | Game #3: | Again the Goldeyes score 1 in the 1st, this time a 2 out rbi double from Ken Harvey. But Manhattan gets solo homers from Jeter (11) and Anderson (21) in their half for a 2-1 lead. 2nd inning runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out and Marco Scutaro is beaned – out 30 days! Bases loaded and Kenny Lofton pounds a hard back to Brian Anderson on the mound – only play at 1st, that’s a run. Marlon Byrd follows with an infield hit for another run, 3-2 Goldeyes. Bottom half, David Bell up with 1 out and runners on 2nd and 3rd and he singles scoring both to flip the lead back in favor of the good guys, 4-3. Stays that way until the top of the 6th when Rafeal Belliard draws a 2 out walk. Then with a 3-2 count on Lofton, he takes off and Lofton doubles him home to tie the game!Bottom of the 7th Bell leads off with single, Graffanino in to PF, steals. Jeter is then given the IW to get to Kendall (hitting in the .320s). Grounds to Grace, he throws it away, run scores. Wigginton whiffs, Anderson gets an IW and Cordero follows with a 2 run single. 7-4 after 7. Bullpen holds (for a change) and we win. | Game #4: | New pattern – Winnipeg does NOT get a run in the 1st – they get 3! Byrd walks to start the game. Lofton doubles him home. Bradley singles him home. Guiel singles. Belliard walks to load the bases. Hummel singles, another run. Runners hold at 3rd. Matheny flies out to LF – Conine back, Guiel tags and he’s OUT at the plate. 3-0 Winnipeg makes it 4 when Aaron Guiel leads off the 3rd with a solo shot (13). Manhattan finally gets into the scoring act with 1 in the 4th when Stairs doubles in 1. Then they tie the game in the 5th scoring 3 including a 2 run Garrett Anderson double. But it was a 2 out, 2 on, bloop single by Conine in the 7th that gave Manhattan their 1st lead in the game, 5-4. And the bullpen held. | Game #5: | Winnipeg’s new pattern from the last game holds true again as they score 3 in the 1st off Tim Wakefield and it was a 3 run homer from Aaron Guiel (14) – we don’t like him. Kelly Stinnet makes it 4-0 in the 3rd on an rbi single. But then Manhattan begins a run that includes 7 runs in the 3rd and 4 more in the 7th – 10 of the runs on homers. 2 2 run homers in the 3rd – Anderson (22) and Sierra (6). A 2 run double from McEwing and an rbi single from Tino Martinez. Tino then hits a grand slam (9) in the 7th that wiped out the 3 runs Winnipeg scored in the 4th. | Game #6: | 1 game to go for a sweep and 1 last chance for Winnipeg to score 1st in the 1st inning – and they do! Every game, this time 2 runs. Byrd doubles right after Lofton to make it 1-0 and he then scores on a Wiggington error. But Manhattan matches it and raises it by 1 in the bottom half on an rbi triple from Graffanino and then a Wiggington 2 run homer (2). A Kendall rbi single in the 2nd and it’s 4-2. THen it’s Winnipeg’s turn. Guiel leads off with a double and scores on a Victor Martinez single. Goldeyes grab the lead in the 4th when Lofton singles with a runner on and then Byrd follows with a 2 run triple. 5-4 after 3 1/2.
But then ….Phelps leads off the bottom half with a homer (8). Tino Martinez then doubles, Bell singles him to 3rd. Kendall singles, 6-5. And then with 2 outs, Garrett Anderson doubles scoring 2 for an 8-5 lead. Lofton makes it 8-6 with a lead-off homer (14) in the 6th. But we get the needed insurance back in the 8th and Gordon closes it out in the 9th for his 4th SAVE this week! |
| Series Summary: | Well it was a sweep, much needed, but to be honest, the Goldeyes pitching staff is looking to the future. Goldeyes did score 29 times in the 6 games – but Manhattan managed 46 runs! Our pitching is kind of suspect too.
NEXT Week however, we go up against Hollywood – not a thrilling proposition. And we will have McEwing on the 7 day DL – along with Durham…..that hurts. |
