Castle Rock Hounds @ Chicago Demolition

Series Preview: The Chicago Demolition (74-37) bring a powerhouse rotation featuring Pedro Martinez and Jason Schmidt to face the Castle Rock Hounds (60-51). While Chicago’s Carlos Delgado provides middle-of-the-order thump, the Hounds counter with the legendary Barry Bonds. Expect a classic battle of elite pitching versus disciplined, high-on-base hitting in this AL showdown.
Game #1: The Chicago Demolition defeated the Castle Rock Hounds 4–2, powered by a dominant performance from Carlos Delgado. Delgado anchored the offense by launching two solo home runs, providing the necessary cushion for starter Roger Clemens. Clemens earned his 12th victory of the season, pitching six solid innings while navigating home runs from Mark Ellis and Randall Simon.

The bullpen took over in the seventh, culminating in a historic milestone for John Franco. Franco pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to lock down the victory, earning his third save of the year and the 300th of his illustrious career.

Final Score: Chicago 4 – Castle Rock 2

Win: Roger Clemens 12-4 (3.55)
Loss: Andy Pettitte 12-4 (3.74)
Save: John Franco #3 (Career Save #300)

Game #2: In an absolute marathon that stretched into the 16th inning, the Chicago Demolition outlasted the Castle Rock Hounds in a 6–5 thriller. The game remained a tense 2–2 deadlock from the 8th inning through the 15th, dominated by stellar relief pitching.

The drama peaked in the final frame when Castle Rock exploded for three runs in the top of the 16th to take a 5–2 lead. However, Chicago’s Charles Johnson stunningly tied the game with a three-run blast in the bottom half. The comeback was completed moments later when Edgar Renteria singled and eventually scored the winning run on a Carlos Delgado base hit.

Final Score: Chicago 6 – Castle Rock 5 (16 Innings)
Win: Terry Adams 5-1 (3.04)
Loss: Rick Bauer 3-3 (3.60)

Game #3: In a high-scoring affair, the Castle Rock Hounds defeated the Chicago Demolition 9–6, overcoming an early deficit with a persistent power display. Chicago jumped out to a 4–1 lead in the third inning, highlighted by a towering three-run home run from Carlos Delgado. However, Castle Rock responded immediately; Casey Blake and Jared Sandberg both went deep in the fifth to tie the game, followed by a go-ahead solo shot from Bill Hall in the sixth.

The Hounds broke the game open in the seventh, scoring four runs—all unearned—off Danny Patterson. Key hits from Hall and Luis Gonzalez, combined with an error by Edgar Renteria, extended the lead to 9–4. Despite a late two-run blast by Hideki Matsui, Kyle Lohse held on for the win after striking out nine batters. Paul Quantrill pitched the final two innings to secure his 18th save.

Final Score: Castle Rock 9 / Chicago 6

Win: Kyle Lohse 9-9 (4.27)
Loss: Pedro Martinez 14-6 (1.80)
Save: Paul Quantrill #18

Game #4: The Castle Rock Hounds secured a commanding 8–3 victory over the Chicago Demolition, powered by a consistent offensive attack and effective relief pitching. The Hounds set the tone early with a Luis Gonzalez RBI double in the first. After Chicago’s Tony Batista homered in the fourth to make it 2–1, Barry Bonds answered with a solo shot in the fifth to reclaim momentum.

The Hounds broke the game open in the seventh inning, scoring four runs highlighted by a two-RBI single from Robby Hammock and a sacrifice fly by Mark Ellis. Although Chicago added solo homers from Edgar Renteria and Carlos Delgado in the eighth, the deficit was too large to overcome. Dave Veres earned the win in relief after starter Doug Davis left early with a shoulder injury.

Final Score: Castle Rock 8 / Chicago 3

Win: Dave Veres 2-0 (4.25)
Loss: Jason Schmidt 13-5 (2.37)

Game #5: The Castle Rock Hounds defeated the Chicago Demolition 5–3 in a late-inning thriller. Chicago took an early 3–0 lead in the first inning off a two-RBI triple by Tony Batista and an RBI single from Bobby Higginson. However, Hounds starter Joel Pineiro settled in brilliantly, pitching eight innings and retiring the side in order from the fifth through the eighth. Castle Rock chipped away at the lead with RBI doubles from Brent Mayne and Randall Simon, tying the game in the sixth.

In the ninth, Brad Wilkerson broke the deadlock with a solo home run off Brendan Donnelly. Luis Gonzalez added an insurance run with an RBI double that scored Billy Hall, who had entered to run for an injured Barry Bonds. Paul Quantrill pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 19th save.

Final Score: Castle Rock 5 / Chicago 3

Win: Joel Pineiro 13-8 (2.84)
Loss: Brendan Donnelly 5-3 (2.43)
Save: Paul Quantrill #19

Game #6: The Chicago Demolition defeated the Castle Rock Hounds 7–5, fueled by a massive five-run explosion in the sixth and seventh innings. Castle Rock held an early 2–0 lead behind RBI doubles from Royce Clayton, but Chicago surged ahead in the sixth when Carlos Delgado tied the game with a two-run double, followed immediately by a two-run home run from Hideki Matsui.

Chicago extended their lead to 7–2 in the seventh, capitalizing on bases-loaded walks and a two-RBI single by Matsui. Despite a late two-run blast by Jared Sandberg in the ninth, Billy Wagner slammed the door to secure the save. Roger Clemens earned the win with seven solid innings.

Final Score: Chicago 7 – Castle Rock 5

Win: Roger Clemens 13-4 (3.50)
Loss: Andy Pettitte 12-5 (3.81)
Save: Billy Wagner #25

Series Summary: In a tightly contested six-game split, the Castle Rock Hounds and Chicago Demolition showcased a masterclass in power hitting and high-stakes pitching. The series opened with Chicago taking the first two, highlighted by John Franco’s 300th career save and a 16-inning marathon where Carlos Delgado and Charles Johnson staged a stunning bottom-of-the-16th comeback.

Castle Rock roared back to take the next three, turning the tide with relentless seventh-inning rallies and elite bullpen work. Paul Quantrill proved indispensable with two saves, while Joel Pineiro anchored the staff with an eight-inning gems. The Hounds’ offense leaned on clutch homers from Barry Bonds and Brad Wilkerson to punish Chicago’s relievers.

Chicago salvaged the finale behind Roger Clemens and Hideki Matsui, ensuring neither team gained the upper hand in the standings. While Delgado remained a constant threat for the Demolition, the Hounds’ depth and late-inning resilience defined this hard-fought deadlock

Game #3: Scott Podsednik homered and singled in a run as Jeff Suppan and Rafael Soriano combined to hold the Bombers to just three hits in a 2-0 Hampton win.

Game #5: Chad Moeller singled twice, doubled and homered to drive in seven runs and help Hampton to a 15-5 win over Valdosta. The win briefly brought Hampton to the .500 mark.
Game #6: And so much for .500 … The Bombers took advantage of Joe Nathan‘s continuing problems in pitching well in a close game as the righty reliever could neither pitch nor field as he gave up two runs (one unearned thanks to a crap throw to 1st base that rolled into right field)and Valdosta won 7-5.Eduardo Perez hammered two out of the park for the Bombers.
