Valdosta Bombers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: A couple of teams floating around .500 – disappointing season for Manhattan (2 games below .500). They can score runs, but once they do, they seem to relax – but the defense and the bullpen can’t hold leads, keep pouring it on. But it’s not in the DNA too often….
Game #1: Case in point – Gas Hornets grab a 4-0 lead after 4 with 3 runs in the 3rd. But then Kim blows the save in the 7th giving up 3 – Sexson with a 2 run double. Game is tied in the 9th, when Antonio Perez hits a walk-off double to salvage the win.
VAL 4-13-1 LP Baez (2-2) HR LaRue (3)
MGH 5-12-1 WP Guthrie (3-1) BS Kim (3)
Game #2: In this one we didn’t build a big early lead. Instead after the game was tied 1-1 in the 6th, we rattled of 2 in the 6th and 3 in the 7th – and HELD on! Only 3 hits by Valdosta was key – that and 3 homers by Manhattan.
VAL 1-3-0 LP Ohka (4-3)
MGH 6-8-0 WP Howard (2-0) HRs: Vanderwal (7), Sierra (1), Martinez (4)
Game #3: A run for the Bombers in the 1st, 1 for the good guys in the 2nd, then 1 for Valdosta in the 3rd….then the Bombers score 3 in the 7th and double that for 6 in the 7th!! Some late Gas Hornets homers made it look a little bit less of a bombing – well, not really, it was a blowout! Ramirez, 2 hits, 3 rbis, homer. Abreu 3 hits, 3 runs. Well, Sesxon also with 3 hits – lots of hits for Valdosta!! Lawrence gives up 1 run in the 5 innings, 5 hits for the win.
VAL 11-18-0 WP Lawrence (4-2) HRs – Ramirez (11), Chavez (8)
MGH 4- 8-3 LP Fossum (1-5) HRs – Anderson (8), Cordero (2)
Game #4: Matt Morris finally pitches a great game – in fact, he was 2 outs away from a NO-HITTER. But then Vernon Wells breaks up the no-no with a solo homer. 3 batters later Orlando Cabrera connects for a 2 run homer. 2 hits in the 9th end up in 3 runs! The silver lining – we scored 4 in the 4th and 2 more in the 6th so we still won the game. And while Morris wasn’t giving up hits, he did give up 6 walks including 1 in the 9th. But he won, that’s something! Oh – and we bombed 4 homers including a Matt Stairs 3 run blast.
VAL 3- 2-0 LP Meche (3-6)
MGH 6-10-0 WP Morris (3-5) HRs – Jeter (3), Anderson (9), Phelps (5), Stairs (5)
Game #5: Here’s one that got away! Abreu and Ramirez homer in the 1st for 2 runs. Gas Hornets use some single and doubles to tie it in the bottom half. Bombers score 1 in the 2nd, we get one in the 3rd. Then the Bombers begin their onslaught. 3 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th. Cabrera goes 4 for 6 with 3 rbis. Perez scores 3 times, Grudzielanek gets 2 hits, 3 runs, 16 hits for the Bombers. Down 8-3 in the 6th, Todd Zeile gives us some hope when he launched a 2 run homer. But it was still 8-5 in the 9th and Jose (22*) Valverde coming in to close it out. It didn’t happen. He faces 6 batters gives up 2 walks and 4 hits!! The final hit was a bases loaded (infield in) no out walk-off 2 run single by Wil Cordero. 4 run 9th flips the game in favor of the good guys. And Valverde moves to 0-3, 2 blown saves and an era of 5.40 – for a 22*!! Yikes.
VAL 8-16-0 LP Valverder (0-3) BS (2) HRs – Abreu (4), Ramirez (12)
MGH 9-14-3 WP Gordon (1-0) HR – Zeile (1)
Injury – Tino Martinez 6 days
Game #6: The finale had a hint of game 1. It started with a leadoff homer by Abreu for Valdosta, but then the Gas Hornets retaliated with a 5 spot in the bottom half. But this time we didn’t falter the rest of the way. 8th inning we gave up a run, but that was it.
VAL 2- 7-0 LP Mendoza (1-4) HR – Abreu (5)
MGH 5-12-1 WP Wakefield (6-4) S Gordon (16)
Series Summary: Well – 5-1 for the week, we’ll take it. However, to be fair, the Bombers staff was a bit weak – but then getting all those runs against Valverde was a shocker.

Yucaipa Badgers @ DeWitt Tigers

Series Summary: DeWitt wins the series 4-2.

Michigan Marauders @ Winnipeg Goldeyes

Series Summary:  Michigan takes the series 4 games to 2.

Dondero Oaks @ Iowa Giants

Series Preview: Dondero comes to Iowa both teams off to rocky starts.
Series Summary: Dondero takes first five Iowa wins game six.

Castle Rock Hounds @ Houghton Penguins

Series Preview: Castle Rock heads to Houghton.
Game #1: The Castle Rock Hounds’ Andy Petitte shuts out the Penguins for 8 innings, and Dave Veres gives up a solo home run to Andy Riggs in the bottom of the 9th to let the Penguins back in the game, but the Hounds hold on 9-1.
Game #2: The Hounds jump on Benoit for 4 runs in the top of the 1st, but Houghton takes a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the 2nd that they hold onto until the 6th inning, but the Penguins scored no more runs after the 2nd inning and could not hold off the Hounds as they took the win 8-6.
Game #3: In a near duplicate result of Game #1, Houghton gives up 10 runs to the Hounds and loses their 3rd straight game 10-1.
Game #4: Houghton rallies their team and takes a 4-3 lead into the 7th inning. Luther Hackman gives up 3 hits, including 2 doubles to give up the lead and the ballgame and the Hounds win by a final score of 5-4.
Game #5: Another train wreck performance for the Penguins during their bench player game as they lose another game 10-2.
Game #6: Houghton’s ace Mark Buehrle keeps Houghton in the game, and they put the tying run on 3rd base in the bottom of the 9th inning with 1 out, but they could not get him across the plate to force extra innings. The Hounds bring out the brooms for the sweep of the Penguins in the final game’s 4-3 win.
Series Summary: The Hounds sweep the Penguins taking all 6 games of the series. Four of the games were blowouts. The Penguin’s offense has really struggled this year. They are already making calls to move expendable players having good years.

Hollywood Vampires @ Flora-Bama Mullets

Series Preview: Can Hollywood’s premier pitching slow down the powerful Flora-Bama offense?
Game #1: Vampires make three errors ruining a good pitchers duel between Oswalt and Moyer.
Flora-Bama 4-0
Game #2: Wolf went six strong innings and the bullpen had just enough to lock it down.
Flora-Bama 2-1
Game #3: Vampires offense finally woke up in the 7th as they busted out five runs to take a 6-4 lead. Lopez hit his second homer of the game to tie it in the bottom of the 7th. Floyd’s rbi single in the 13th off a tired Wagner finally broke the tie. Isrinhause entered the 13th as a 25 grade and closed it out.
Hollywood 7-6 13th
Game #4: Odalis Perez gave up a couple homers early and then retaliated by hitting and injuring Berkman and Hunter for the next couple of games. Moyer went 7.1 innings for the win as Malaska fended off a late rally.
Flora-Bama 4-3
Game #5: Juan Gone’s two run homer tied it in the bottom of the 1st. Vampires loaded the bases in the 6th with no outs, but Carter came on and bailed out Wolf. Ortiz hit a solo shot in the 7th to give the Vampires a 3-2 lead. In the bottom of the 7th, Burba came on to face Rivera with two on and two outs. Mullets countered with Bigbie add he smacked a pinch hit three run homer.
Flora-Bama 6-3.
Game #6: Hollywood’s offense jumped on Ramirez in the second to put this one away early. Oswalt went the distance for a three hit shutout.
Hollywood 6-0
Series Summary: Mullets lose one in extra innings, but still take the 4-2 series win. Hollywood’s pitching kept them within striking distance in every game, but their offense really struggled against Flora-Bama’s barrage of left handed starters.
