Monroeville Maulers @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: Castle Rock is still looking for its first really strong home series as they welcome the Maulers to town. Castle Rock is just 5-11 at home so far this season. The Hounds sit at 13-21 overall, good for a tie for 2nd in the West. Monroeville is at 19-15, but that places them in a tie for 3rd in a strong Central division.
Game #1: Castle Rock cranks out 13 hits and takes the series opener by a count of 6-3. Luis Gonzalez paces the offense with a single, double and 2-run HR. Bonds adds a homer of his own to pad the lead in the 8th. Both teams left 10 on base, as many opportunities were squandered by each squad. The Hounds bullpen made the difference, giving up 0 runs and only one hit in 4 innings of work.

WP: Doug Davis (3-3)
LP: Riedling (1-2)
S: Benitez (3)

Game #2: Both teams are exchanging 0’s on the scoreboard, as both Pineiro and Dontrelle Willis are dealing in this one. But, in the bottom of the 6th, Placido Polanco delivers a clutch 2-out 2-RBI double for the Hounds to stake them out to a 2-0 lead. That is all that Castle Rock would get, but it is also that Pineiro would need, as he goes the full 9 innings, allowing just 3 hits, to get the complete game 2-0 victory.

WP: Pineiro (3-4)
LP: Willis (4-3)

Game #3: Castle Rock starts hot in this one, with solo homers from Bonds and Sweeney in the bottom of the 1st off of Kyle Snyder to give Pettitte an early 2-0 lead. They score 4 more in the 2nd, as Bonds hits another HR and Snyder is downgraded after just 1.1 IP. In the 4th, Bonds goes down with a 5-game injury, which is rough for the Hounds offense. But, the Hounds keep piling it on. After a Varitek 2-run homer for Monroeville, Brent Mayne hits a 2-out 3-RBI double to extend the lead to 9-2. The final is 10-4, Castle Rock, as the Hounds have taken the first three games.

WP: Pettitte (3-1)
LP: Snyder (4-3)

Game #4: Castle Rock again jumps out to an early lead, with three runs in the bottom of the 1st. Without Bonds in the lineup others will have to step up, and Randall Simon does that with a 2-RBI single. Catalanotto gets a 2-run homer for the Maulers in the top of the 4th to cut the lead to 3-2 and Jose Hernandez ties it with an RBI single. Glaus puts Monroeville ahead 4-3 with an RBI single in the 5th.

After the 1st, Castle Rock doesn’t score a run until the bottom of the 9th, but here is Randall Simon again, delivering a clutch HR to tie the game at 4-4. And, Brent Mayne sends the crowd into a frenzy, as he delivers a 2-out walk-off HR in the bottom of the 9th to give Castle Rock the 5-4 victory.

WP: Contreras (3-2)
LP: Jimenez (0-1)

Game #5: Monroeville gets on the board first thanks to an RBI single from Felipe Lopez in the top of the 2nd. Mientkiewicz delivers a clutch 2-out 2-RBI double in the 5th to give the Maulers a 4-0 lead, and Salomon Torres is pitching well for Monroeville.

The Hounds finally get on the board in the 9th, with Blake getting an RBI double to make it 4-1. But, that is all the offense the Hounds can muster, as Torres gets the complete game victory.

WP: Torres (4-2)
LP: Lohse (1-3)

Game #6: Monroeville jumpst out early again, scoring 3 in the first, highlighted by an Endy Chavez 2-out 2-RBI double. Jacque Jones doubles the lead in the 2nd with a 3-run homer to give the Maulers a 6-0 cushion. The Hounds try to chip away, getting solo HRs from Wilkerson and Luis Gonzalez.

The teams exchange runs, and then Castle Rock gets a couple in the 6th to make it 7-4. The Hounds take advantage of an error to make it 7-5 in the 7th. But, that is as close as they would get, as the Maulers pen does it job, with Tavarez picking up the save.

WP: Riedling (2-2)
LP: Davis (3-4)
S: Tavarez (4)

Series Summary: The Hounds race out to take the first four games before Monroeville takes the final two. All around, not a bad series for Castle Rock, but they definitely felt the impact of losing Bonds mid-series. As Reggie would say, he is the straw that stirs the drink.

California Quakes @ Corktown Bootleggers

Series Summary: Corktown wins 5 of 6 vs a down California squad.

Michigan Marauders @ Flora-Bama Mullets

Series Preview: Michigan’s NL East road trip continues against Flora-Bama. Will their bats finally wake up?
Game #1: The Mullets and Javy Lopez knocked Radke out of the game in the 3rd.
Flora-Bama 6-3
Game #2: Solo homers from Lopez, Berkman and Huff gave the Mullets an early lead. Michigan picked away and finally tied it in the 9th on a Johnson homer off Acevedo. Hunter walked it off in bottom of 11th with a rbi single.
Flora-Bama 4-3 11th
Game #3: Hafner gave Michigan a preview of their future with a two run homer in the 2nd. Mullets then rallied back to for an easy blowout win.
Flora-Bama 11-3
Game #4: Juan Gone’s homer in the 6th broke a 3-3 tie to give Ramirez the win. Acevedo picked up the save.
Flora-Bama 4-3
Game #5: Kennedy drove in the go ahead run in the 7th to break a 1-1 tie. Acevedo picked up his 3rd save of the series.
Flora-Bama 2-1
Game #6: In the 5th, with the game tied 1-1, APBA super fan Morganna ran on to the field and gave Moyer a kiss. The Kiss boosted Moyer’s grade all the way to a 17 and that convinced his manager to let him go the distance. Hunter’s two run homer in the 8th was the difference in another tight game.
Flora-Bama 3-1
Series Summary: At some-point, Michigan’s talented offense is going to explode out of their season long slump. Luckily for Flora-Bama, it wasn’t this week and the Mullets won a bunch of close games to grab a surprising sweep. Marauders only scored 13 runs and are now hitting a league low of .223.

Danbury Mad Hatters @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: Both teams come into the series at or near .500 with Hampton 17-17 and Danbury at 15-19.
Game #1: Plunkfest 2003 featuring four beanings in the game saw Marcus Giles drive in three runs with a couple of hits to pace Hampton to a 10-5 win. The game began with Danbury starter Zach Day beaning Rob Mackowiak and then Matt Lawton which caused ump Sleepy Floyd to issue warnings to both teams. Warnings Schwarnings thought Brandon Webb who thought one hit allowed with seven Ks partway through the 5th would get him a free pass. Nah-uh. Webb gets tossed for knocking Adam Everett out cold (5 day injury) and then in the next inning Travis Driskill got payback and hit AJ Hinch (we actually would have paid Driskill to hit Hinch). No injury, but Driskill got the boot. The game cruised into the 8th with Hampton up 10-0 but Kent Mercker apparently was working off a hangover and gave up five runs to the Mad Hatters to make it suddenly much closer. Matt Mantei came in with the bases loaded after Joe Nathan loaded them and struck out Jim Thome to end it. Kerry Robinson had three hits and Moises Alou drove in two for Danbury. Matt Lawton homered and drove in two for Hampton.
Game #2: Scott Hatteberg launched one into the cheap seats with two out in the bottom of the 9th to give Hampton a 3-2 walkoff win at the expense of Danbury reliever Jeff Russell. The game featured great starts by both Adam Eaton (Danbury – 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO) and Jeff Suppan (Hamptn – 8 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 8 SO). Craig Biggio and Ronny Cedeno got the RBIs for Danbury while Rob Mackowiak was the only run scored off Eaton thanks to a solo shot in the 6th. Hampton tied the game in the 8th when Ken Griffey Jr. dropped a fly ball which allowed Julio Lugo to score all the way from 1st base.
Game #3: A homerfest that had six four baggers in the game – five by Hampton – as the Huskies took the contest 8-4. Toby Hall was 3/4 with his 2nd homer of the year and three RBIs for Danbury. Derrek Lee homered twice and drove in three runs for Hampton. The Huskies homered four times off Danbury starter Andrew Good but they only amounted to five runs.
Game #4: The Huskies went back-to-back off Derek Lowe in each of the first two innings as they won fairly easily 9-0. Another five homer game against Hampton but strangely over a much better pitcher in Lowe who gave up four of the homers with Travis Driskill allowing the other. Kerry Robinson had another three-hit game for Danbury with Scott Hatteberg getting the weird scoring line of 1/1 with a home run, two runs, and four walks.
Game #5: Abraham Nunez smacked a pinch hit home run in the 5th to drive in two and give Danbury the lead and then Toby Hall brought in the winner in the top of the 9th on a successful suicide squeeze for a Mad Hatters 3-2 victory. A very good game with sloppy defense by Danbury on one side (errors by Nunez and Jay Bell) saved by some great defense by Toby Hall who turned a bases loaded tough to handle trickling grounder in front of the plate into an inning-ending double play.
Game #6: Matt Lawton banged out a grand slam off DJ Carrasco in the 6th to bring Hampton from behind to beat the Mad Hatters 8-4. The Huskies went up 1-0 on a single by Julio Lugo in the 2nd, but the Mad Hatters stormed back with Jim Thome and Moises Alou driving in three runs off a less-than-sharp Brandon Webb to give the visitors a 3-1 lead. Jolbert Cabrera tied it up with a two-run homer in the 4th, but again in the next inning Danbury came back to score one to give them a 4-3 lead on an RBI double by Alou. That set the stage for the slam and the eventual win.
Series Summary: The difference in this series was Hampton out-homering Danbury 16-2 which translated to Hampton taking 5 of 6 in this early season series.

Long Beach Titans @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Well this week will validate us – either bad team or decent team as we host the NL West leading Long Beach.
Game #1: If game 1 is an indicator, we need some help. Up 5-4 after 4, then tied 6-6 in the 7th, we give up the winning run in the 8th and can’t solve the POTENT PEN of the Titans. FINAL 7-6 Long Beach. Myers 3 for 5, 2 rbis for LBT, Cintron 2 TRIPLES, 2 rbis a run. Comier SAVE #6
Game #2: Titans plate 4 in the 3rd – 2 on a Raul Mondesi 2 run homer (9), but Gas Hornets scored 3 in boththe 5th ant 6th and win this one 7-4! Woohoo! White, who messed up last game, wins this one with 3 perfect relief innings. Loaiza drops to 6-2.
Game #3: Gas Hornets on verge of going 2 to 1 in the series up 3-1 in the 8th, but give up 3 in the top half of the 8th BUT the big play was the Catcher’s Interference on Kendall which allowed the inning to go the 1 extra batter needed and Vidro delivers a 3 run homer (10). All 3 unearned. Then the Gas Hornets tie in the bottom half, but a Kim error in the 9th allows another unearned run and Cormeir, who blew the save in the 8th, win it with a perfect 9th (1-0)
Game #4: Long Beach scores 1 in the 5th and adds 2 in the 7th and holds off Manhattan to win their 3rd in a row, 3-1. Hampton the win (5-3) Cormier the save (7).
Game #5: 2 runs for Long Beach in the 2nd – Mondesi 2 run triple. But Gas Hornets get 3 in their half – Graffanino homer (3). But Payton homers in the 3rd to tie it. However, the Gas Hornets strike next with 2 in the 4th and this time, the bullpen contains the Titans (and no critical errors) and we win, 5-3! Gordon racks up his 13th save.
Game #6: OK – we have a chance to split the series and, well, Matt Morris is on the mound. He’s been throwing batting practice all season (for the other team!). Titans score 2 in the 2nd and 3 in the 3rd (Mondesi 3 run homer #10) with Manhattan getting 2 in the 2nd and it’s 5-3 Long Beach. And Morris is downgraded – then he starts to pitch well. 4 scoreless innings and it’s 5-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th and lo and behold, the Gas Hornets score 3 off Peavy and Hawkins in the bottom half to tie the game. Garrett Anderson has a big blast as part of the outburst. So here we go – back in the game, but no one scores again for a while – into the 13th and Gabe White has done well in relief for 2 innings, but he’s tiring in the 13th and well, the Titans score 5 times!! Helms gets a 2 run single, Snow a two run homer (2). So the Titans take the finale 10-5 in 13. Cressend (1-2) gets the win with 2 innings of relief.
Series Summary: We don’t have it this year (at least not now) – and Long Beach has a LOT…they take the series 4-2.

Valdosta Bombers @ Blarney Drive Bandits

Series Summary: Bombers take 4 of 6 in a series where each team scored 16 runs in a game and Valdosta 17 in another.
